What a hidden gem. Located in Covington very close to the Chick-fil-A store. This store had adequate parking and was very roomy inside. The service could be better, I came in to the restaurant and went up to the counter and the person working the counter was on the phone and was on it for another five minutes before she hung up and recognized me standing there to take my order. She was nice and took my order. A lamb gyro with a salad. While I waited I had time to look around and observe all the beautiful pictures of the Mediterranean. When the gryo came it looked great. I couldn't wait to sink my teeth into it. The helpings were large and the flavors came through. The meat was not juicy and barely warm, by the time I was coming to the last bites of the pita and lamb it was like chewing cardboard. Warning, before you go there will be a sign at the door that rates this place a "poor" from the health department. With that said, when we are there the place seemed very clean and staff was quick to clean up after the guests left. Now for the food. I had never been to a gyro place that provided so much meat in a wrap! It was seriously a lot. And I am not complaining. We used to order for pick up but lately we call on our way and let them know that we would like to eat in but wanted to get the order started so it is ready when we get there. It's a home run for me! First the hummus. I'm a hummus lover you see. I make eat it more than one should, I make it even more than that and I have preferences few places deliver on... except for this place. Bad AND expensive. I ordered some Kibi. It's like a meat samosa. Or it would have been if they had seasoned the meat. It was also still cold on the inside. It wasn't even greasy meat...it was just flavorless. Yuck. The basmati rice tasted like dirt. When they harvest the rice and bag it, it is put in burlap bags. It is dirty and nasty. The workers were a bit grumpy but that didn't change my demeanor because the food was yummy and I got the joy of the Lord :) I got lamb kabab with rice, a side Greek salad, and hummus. This is an awesome place in Covington for Mediterranean food! My friend and I stopped by here for a quick lunch, and was pleased to find so many different offerings in such a casual eatery. When I first walked in the cashier was very eager to help me, as he was happy to make recommendations and explained that anything can be substituted, which made my decision all the easier. There were several items that looked appealing, but in the end - I went with a combination plate that came with souvlaki, Greek salad, pita and substituted fries for hummus. What was also nice was that for the souvlaki you can choose any meat and when I chose lamb - there was no additional charge as there often is for lamb versus chicken or beef. My friend ended up getting the same combo plate, but with the standard fries. It didn't take too long for us to get our food, and on a Friday around the lunch hour, the place was pretty steady. Once we had our plates we were pleased by the large portion, as you definitely get more than your money's worth, as the combo plate we both ordered was only 10 bucks. The lamb souvlaki was yummy! I really like lamb, so loved that it was juicy and there were big chunks of it. The only recommendation I'd make is that instead of it being served on a skewer, I'd probably prefer it to be just served on the plate, as my friend and I ended up cutting it off from the skewer. Also, the cook on it was just a tad overcooked, so it wasn't as tender as it could've been but - it still was still a great choice. The Greek salad had a light vinaigrette on it that wasn't at all overwhelming, the pita was soft, and I loved the flavor of the hummus! It was really creamy and on the thicker side, which is how I like my hummus. They also have hot sauce that you can help yourself to, which I appreciated because I tend to always add spice to whatever I'm eating. Overall, Gyro House Mediterranean Cuisine is a great eatery in the main business corridor of Covington. There is plenty to choose from, and I also saw that they have lunch specials, like a burger with fries and drink for less than $7! How can you beat that? There were several employees sitting around, talking, unmasked. There were customers coming in and out, unmasked. I can understand that they can't eat while masked, but this was not the case.
