I was previously a loyal customer of this location, specifically the preparer, Sandra C. I've been having my taxes done here since 2010. This year, I am so disappointed in the lack of empathy and Customer Service, I took back my documents and I am going elsewhere. The staff, including their district manager, Alex, was not willing to put the customer first. I drove 32 miles and over 1 1/2 hours to get there, when I could've easily visited a more convenient location. Too bad they lost a customer tonight. read more

I can honestly say without hesitation that this is by far the best place I've ever gone to do my Taxes. From the moment I walked in I was politely greeted by the friendly receptionist who offered me coffee, and let me know my tax person would be with me shortly. Usually when dealing with something as important as your Taxes, it's something a lot of us getnervous doing. However, after I met my Tax PROFESSIONAL by name of Yesenia my worries literally became non existent. She was beyond friendly, welcoming, knowledgable, and actually cared (In a customer service environment it's hard to find meet someone that actually cares and wants to make sure they've answered all your questions and makes you feel at ease) I 100% recommend this H&R Block location, and definitely making an appointment for next year! :) read more

As I've traveled around the country over the years, I've frequented a number of H&R Blocks in a handful of states. I've had good tax preparers who can handle my combination of freelance and salary work across multiple states, and I've had bad preparers who became confused and ended up overtaxing me. This place got it right and then some. Yeah, sure, their location isn't very appealing. But, the strip malls on Sherman Way hold a wealth of little gems that are worth checking out if you can stomach the architecture. Inside, it is clean, cool, and although the waiting area is a little cramped, they have a decent stock of magazines. Not that I cared, though... I booked my session ten minutes before I arrived, three days before the 15th, and didn't have to wait at all. I was helped by Hilda and she was fantastic. She was very quick compared to a lot of other preparers I've been with, and she was very knowledgeable when it came to my wacky list of reimbursements. She knew what she was doing, and she did it politely and professionally. Alas, it isn't cheap going to H&R Block to do your taxes, and if you're only doing basic taxes I'd recommend either DIY or a cheaper CPA. I'm sure a lot of others would recommend CPAs instead of this route anyway, but for those of us who want a larger, incorporated entity to handle your loot, this place does the trick. read more

Ask for Office Manager Yesenia Flores. Her courteous and efficient service is the gold standard at which every preparer should be working. The year before last, when I had been preparing my 2014 return, I walked into a quite condescending and churlish. I got handed over to Yesenia when I had came back with all my 1099s, and what a difference. She assured me that everything was okay and didn't scold me for being unorganized because of my move back home. This place completely lacks any true understanding of customer service, which is such a shame. Last year I went to H&R Block for my tax preparation at the vanowen location by van nuys blvd, and was very happy with the service I received. I figured since this was a chain and I have very basic tax needs I should have no problem with having this years taxes prepared at a location that was closer to my home. I was completely wrong. Firstly the woman preparing my taxes had such an attitude it was pitiful. She must have been new on the job because she required a lot of assistance. I have no discrepancies with rookies (we all are at some point) but for cheese and rice have fun with it at least. She constantly blew her breath in annoyance, did not enjoy taking direction and at the end fumbled with my dismissal. What I mean by that is, I was given the choice to have my return mailed to my home and I could pay now or pick up my check at the office in exchange for having my fee withdrawn from my return, which I thought I accepted the latter. We must of had a miss communication because at check out I realized she did not process that order and asking me what form of payment I was going to use. After I told her I did not want to pay now I was fine having the amount withdrawn from my return, she said nothing. Simply rolled her eyes, marched back to her cubicle and re filed what needed to be done. Luckily I was there with my boyfriend so we were able to see the humor in her angst. Two weeks later I return to pick up my check. I was greeted by a front desk this time however her presence was so immature. She asked me "why do you think your check is here?" when I said I came to pick up my return .... really? Granted this girl was young, she looked all of 17 but still, I would think in customer service positions they would teach you how to speak to the customers with some sort of professionalism. So she finds my check and presents me with the stub and invoice. Almost a third of my return was swallowed in fees! I was told to prepare my taxes it was $130 or $140 dollars and that would be the amount taken from my return if I chose to have it sent to the office. What I was not told about were the other $65 - $70 dollars racked up in miscellaneous fees. I asked for the supervisor and was told he was at the Planet (watching movies or playing arcade games or working out ... I don't know but clearly not supervising the store). A manager I assume walked over to offer some assistance. When I told her I was never quoted these fees and was not expecting them all she could say was "Well when you don't have a big return we usually don't recommend you pick it up at the office because it can be kind of expensive." In retrospect thanks for that tip but how does that help right now? I could tell this was just going to be a never ending cycle of stupidity so I just chose to take my return and go. Furthermore, my tax preparer emailed me asking for referrals for her outstanding performance. Girl please! I would never subject anyone that I know to your incompetence and I will never be back to this location. read more

Worst service I have ever received. First I had an appointment for 9 am, I get here and they tell me that the woman who was supposed to do my taxes called out. I never received a courtesy call to let me know or anything. She asks me to return at 10 am and schedules me for another appointment, I get here at 10 am and she asks me to wait 15 minutes. A walk in walks in and she begins to service him, meanwhile leaves me waiting out here for another hour. I left without being serviced because people do have things to do like go to work and cannot wait around for over 2 hours to be serviced when you have an appointment!!! If I had time to waste like this I wouldn't have made an appointment to begin with. Bad customer service, rude, and not helpful at all. read more

I came in today and Rosita helped me out. I was a bit nervous to come in because it was my first time at an H&R Block. Rosita was very informative and helpful. She explained thoroughly any questions that I had. She was very nice and patient. I recommend coming into this H&R Block. It was a nice environment. Rosita was quick and got the job done correctly. I highly warn anyone who considers going to H&R block to do their taxes, I've never heard of so many unnecessary fees, and their rates are ridiculous ! My girlfriend went in a few weeks ago to do her taxes. First and foremost, she was completely LIED to about fees that will be charged to her emerald card once she withdraws money. The agent told her that if she goes to any chase bank, they won't charge her any fees to withdraw the full amount . And my gf even asked her several times , confirming with her that this was true. She also chose to go with the emerald card instead of a paper check because the check would take longer , and it would be less fees. Well low and behold, after waiting forever to receive her emerald card with her name on it in the mail , it never came! And she was given a generic card , but it couldn't be used until it was loaded with her refund. The agent said she would get her personalized card within a few days...wrong !! My gf had to call back and request it again, and come to find out, these assholes charge for withdrawing any amount from the card, $2.50 for each transaction at an ATM, $35 at a regular bank (wtf seriously ?!) she ended up paying a total of $115 for one person ($80 to do her federal and state refunds and $35 in extra bank fees) ugh what a nightmare , this place is sleazy and they rip you off big time! By the way, the agent that lied to her about the fees was named Madalsa Saini, so just a pre-warning that is person needs to be re-trained in her job and not tell customers complete lies about their services. After this experience, it's clear she will never be back again. I did my taxes myself and only paid about $60, I recommend anyone to save their money and never use H&R block. Instead try turbo tax online, it's easier than it sounds and it will save you from being financially raped by these scumbags at H&R. Done and done! read more

I use to work in the Simi Valley area so I use to do my taxes at an H&R block in Simi.. But my job got transfered to the valley area..So I decided to do my income tax in Van nuys office on 14415 Sherman way. I almost did my taxes here!!!!.Huge mistake!!!!!! Mariedith Garcia does not know anything of how to deliver a good customer service to a client.. She told me twice that she had been doing taxes for 14 years...But when she was going to put in the child credit/ babysitter information ...she did not have a clue of how to do this..She kept jumping from screen to screen punching in my babysitter info over and over and over and asking another tax agent about child credit!!! Really???? And u have been doing this for 14 years???? UNBEALIVABLE!!!! Should I mention that she was rude too and does not know how to speak politely to the client.. I usually go to the lady at an H&R block in Simi... She is awesome... Other agents are asking her for help!!! She definitely knows what she is doing... Mariedith looked confused about how to complete my taxes...Her excuse was that they had changed the system in the computer and that's why she did not know how to enter my babysitter info and child credit.. Well income tax fileling started January 2016. I saw her the last week of March and she still has not gotten with the changes or has she taken initiative to get with the program...What has she been doing this whole time??? Oh yes..Ask the agents next to her how to get things Done...So her telling me twice that she has been doing taxes for 14 years it is not impressive when u look infront of the client as if u have been doing it for only a few months.. This is imberresing...I was not comfortable completing my taxes there...I did not have my check book with me so I left the office I went home I called their office and asked to cancel my fileling... Well she saved it and put it on hold...My agent in Simi Valley could not process my taxes because she was still holding my paperwork.. Which she told me over the phone she would cancel it..well she didn't..
