Wow! Wow! Wow!! I've been trying to get to the Villa on Grand and boy was it worth the wait! Great space, open and easy seating. If you are a large party, ie 8-10, definitely call to see what/if they have tables. They have plenty of space but I would double check. Great music, great design, and honestly, great vibes. Music was at a perfect volume, not too overwhelming and yet, fun. Simple decor and I love that. Clean and simple, perfect for breakfast/lunch. The food was delicious, hot, and extremely tasty! They made my favorite dish, chilaquiles and it was to perfection. Perfect amount as well. Not too small and not too big nor was it heavy. So I saw this restaurant yesterday as I was on the sidewalk enjoying a pastry from a business across the street and a woman who I'd come to learn was the owner, was setting up tables and signage outside. I said good morning to her and we had a quick chat and exchanged pleasantries and I'd let her know that her restaurant looks cute and I'd love to come check it out with my girlfriend soon (we ended up coming in today!) It was Mother's Day and there were no reservations being taken, which was good in our case because we hadn't called ahead, but spaces were being taken up quickly by other patrons and we'd managed to get two stool spots at the bar top area. While we waited for our drinks, an employee named Carolina was rolling silverware and she looked up to check on us and apologized when she'd realized we were seated for a little bit and didn't have our drinks (a coffee and iced tea), and she immediately stepped away to grab those for us, apologizing the entire time. I let her know the apology wasn't necessary and I appreciated how much everyone in here is hustling! Shortly there afterward, our food arrived (I had ordered chilaquiles with green sauce and my girlfriend ordered the breakfast special) and the servings were very generous. My chilaquiles came with small carafes of each of the four different salsas (again, the two green ones were my jam. The red is too spicy for me and I"m not that tough after all haha). As we ate our meal, we encountered the whole family throughout our dining time. The two daughters come in to help sometimes because one works in finance and the other one is a student (gonna be graduating UCI soon. Congratulations, again!!) and the husband and wife team, Ryan and Maria, were just the warmest and most genuine type of people. You could tell they took pride in everything that is contained within these four walls. The menu is every bit as generous, just like their servings, the decor throughout was just delightful. So much natural light that allowed the turquoise scalloped tiles on the wall to shine and be perfectly paired with the light wooden tables and chairs, but that also went with the tiles and the playful pattern with which they were laid. It's unfortunate that I live all the way down in Los Angeles, because I'd legitimately be coming here at least weekly to try something new. Maria and Ryan, I love this restaurant in what it represents and how you keep it a family business and I really enjoyed seeing how every staff member here made sure to look after everyone dining in, but that you all made sure to support one another without becoming overwhelmed on a day of what is surely one of the most overwhelming for a restaurant. I don't agree with the 5 star reviews. I didn't find the food was that good. We had tacos. Too much cabbage on top. This spot has a totally different interior than your typical Mexican restaurant. The scalloped green tile wall inside is so cute--it reminds me of mermaid tails or cactus scales, and it gives the whole place a stylish, cozy feel. It's a really modern, thoughtfully artistic vibe inside, and just a genuinely nice place to sit and enjoy a meal. The service was top-notch--everyone we encountered was kind and helpful, and it felt like they really trained their team to care about the guest experience. The menu is packed with fun surprises, including some breakfast items that I definitely want to come back and try. We loved the hard shell taco options. The shell was super thick and crunchy in the best way. They fill the tacos with plenty of lettuce and a mix of cheeses that actually adds flavor, not just filler. Another reviewer said that the cheese enchiladas are the best ever. That's a fact! (and I highly recommend the green salsa). I tried a shrimp taco and a poblano taco and my husband had the tortilla soup. He prefers a chicken broth to the tomato broth but said it was very good. We both took home leftovers for lunch, so the portions are generous. Wish their beers selection included domestics, and I was kind of craving a margarita (which they don't offer) but well worth going in for the food. Came to Escondido to meet a customer for lunch. The Villa On Grand was the spot. Super happy we did, it was very good. I wanted to try some various meats they had in tacos, so I got a Carnitas, Asada and a fish taco with a side of rice/beans and a soda. We also got an order of their chips and tried all their salsas. I have to say the chips were amazing, so glad we got them. The were crispy, had a seasoning on them beyond salt, kind of reminded me of a Doritos chip, without the nacho cheese flavor, should have got an order to go, but did not think about it, next time. What are chips without the salsa, liked all 4, from mild to spicy, my favorite though was the habanero salsa, could not get enough of it. Now to the tacos, the tortillas were handmade, had a chewy texture, very enjoyable. The carnitas were perfect, flavor, texture, some crisp edges, just the way I like them. The Asada was grilled to a nice medium, seasoned just right, so good as well. The fish taco was a grilled piece of fish, with cabbage, cilantro, pickled onions and their white sauce, again a winner. The server was so nice from when we arrived and coming around asking how we were doing offering refills, etc. great service! Inside, I love the clean line and modern decor, the tile across the back wall looks like a mermaid pattern, beautiful. The bathroom was clean and they had a bowl style sink that was just so nice looking. Check them out, get some great food, great service and then get some to go as well. Enjoy! read more

The meat on the machaca was very tender and flavorful, the potatoes and fresh peppers and onions perfect as were the eggs. I got a side of guacamole that had a nice lime taste. My husband enjoyed his omelet and said it was the perfect size meal. They sent 4 different salsa's with the order. The two orange colored ones were two fiery for me. But I liked the green and a brownish colored one that was slightly sweet. Looking forward to trying their non breakfast items in person. Based upon reviews here, we decided to give The Villa a try. The place is clean as can be and the people behind the counter could not have been nicer (owners?). This is a counter service style cafe - order at the counter, food is delivered to your table. Birria was the day's special so we had to try the quesobirria tacos. The order included the requisite broth and all was delicious. I had been craving chicken enchiladas, and the plate (which included rice and beans) was also really good and I would definitely order them again. Pricing...we felt that the prices were reasonable and would not prevent us from going back - less than a full service restaurant, but real plates and no dishes to wash! I saw the rave reviews and thought I'd check out this place but I am 100% DISAPPOINTED with the flavor, portion size and that both my son and I became very sick after we left. The red enchilada sauce was too SALTY & had a Smokey seasoning ( not traditional authentic red sauce) and the carne asada plates of nachos and fries were the size of an appetizer. The meat looked like infant bite size pieces and I could literally count the amount of chips on the small platter! It was not worth the Money nor trip to Escondido. I'd rather make carne asada nachos myself and have peace of mind that my stomach won't cramp up after eating my meal. In my opinion this spot didn't have much room for improvement when they opened, and yet here we are almost 18 months later and all they have done is get better and better anyway. The menu and hours have continued to expand over and over without sacrificing quality, quantity, or price. American breakfast now accompanies Mexican breakfast and lunch. The menu is full of staples, but they don't have any standards, if that makes sense: lots of familiar options but everything has "The Villa" stamp on it and nothing is simply a clone of what you'd get if you ordered a dish with the same name somewhere else. Their hot sauces are still my favorite around. It seems like they've evolved to meet the community where it is, without losing any of their originality and flair. The service is lovely - yes you order at the counter but you don't serve and bus yourself - and you're always greeted as a friend. The pancakes are available on the weekend, but they were so kind that they made me some when i went. Delicious!! I didn't take a picture of it, i should have bc it looked beautiful.
