    Heb me out here

I get by with a little HEB from my friends. The Jones Rd HEB is busy, but aren't they all. It's not the friendliest and sometimes is out of things, or not as fresh, but it's better than some other HEB locations, and like most of the others, it's dirt cheap with great quality on a lot of key items. My fave store in Texas for groceries.

This is a clean and well organized H-E-B. This is definitely a small H-E-B compared to most locations. The parking lot is busy. The produce is fresh, abundant and well presented. They have a great cake area, pre-made foods and meat/seafood counters.

I was humiliated and treated like a criminal, yeah seriously. How many of y'all look over the weekly ad specials to decide where to go shopping? Well, I do. So, when I saw that the split chicken breast was $.99 a pound, that was a deal I didn't want to pass up. I found the chicken breasts and lucky me, there was only one left on the shelf. Unfortunately, they had forgotten to price the darn thing but figured the employees would be aware of the sale items or at least have an ad close by as a reference. Turns out, they do not and neither do the managers or at least the one I encountered. I took a picture of the price to show the cashier just in case (I didn't want to slow the line down at the register). When I went to pay, the cashier seemed super shocked that there was no price on the chicken. Not a problem, I have a picture of the price tag AND it's on the weekly ad. No big deal. Like my friend Hannah Montana says, "Everybody makes mistakes, everybody has those days." That wasn't enough for the bagger that was clearly the manager. She starts questioning me about the chicken and why I just didn't grab one with the price (I guess she thought I removed the price tag myself). I explained that it was the last one but I had a picture of the price and it was also on the weekly ad. She asked the cashier how much it weighed and she responded "3.46." The manager then said, "Charge her $7.99." I chuckled a bit as I thought she was joking. However, when the cashier kept asking her to confirm, I realized a few things 1. This is NOT a joke, 2. She either can't do basic math or 3. She thinks I can't (either way it was not right but it got worse.. keep reading). I was literally being charged double. I corrected her math and suggested she charge me $4.00 even for both of our sakes. She told the cashier to do so, she rang me up and I paid. This was bad enough and SHOULD have been the end but nay, nay the manager needed to humiliate me even more. I grabbed my shopping cart full of my (already paid for) groceries but realized the chicken was missing. WTF?! Did this thing go zombie on me and walk off?! Nope, the manager had taken it and was on the phone trying to contact the meat department to confirm my story. She told me, the customer, to stand there and wait while she did so (Of course everyone was staring at me prob wondering why I was stealing chicken). When she couldn't get a hold of anybody she then proceeded to make me follow her to the meat department. I couldn't believe it either and actually told her, "Are you serious? I feel as if I'm being treated like a criminal for something I didn't do." She then responded, "Just follow me ma'am and we're going to get to the bottom of this." All while she's holding my chicken hostage. So, off I go following this ridiculous person to the meat department where I met Andre. Andre was super professional and actually knew his stuff. When he was asked by the manager about the chicken he calmly replied, "Oh yeah, it was the last one on the shelf and I just forgot to price it." He then looks over at me and says, "I'm sorry ma'am, I have more in the back if you would like another one. It's on sale for $0.99 a pound." He weighed it and turns out it weighed over 5 pounds and I underpaid by $1.86. The manager then has me follow her again and to my surprise, didn't charge me the difference. No apology, nothing. She did walk me out of the store basically kicking me out. So, there you have it folks! Next time you go buy something on sale, 1. make sure you bring the ad, 2. Take a picture of the sales price and 3. Stay the hell away from this HEB. Have a good day!!

I mean my pocket book is probably better for it because I want to buy the whole store but honestly I've been missing out. The place is cute and welcoming from the corner sign on the building to the moment you step in- bright, inviting, great displays so you know where to go. You can't get lost in here with the signage, but you can't definitely get lost in the aisles with all the great, unique choices. The ready food display has so many Mediterranean treats, some I've had before some I've never heard of and everything I tried was amazing. We got the cabbage rolls and Armenian veggie dolmas. Great flavor, both specific items I haven't had before. Nice citrus, spiced flavor to these. I'd say they're have to try items. Not only found jarred tomato paste, which I've been on the hunt for but they had choices in this category and that's another first for me. Will have to go back and try the others. Also got the cured Serrano ham -amazing. And I thought the prices were going to be insane having a spot right in the middle of the city and nope- pleasantly surprised for my goodies, great prices even less than some of the other stores I frequent in the suburbs. I'll be back again and again and again until I try the whole store lol. Definitely give them a try, you won't regret it

Nevertheless, it had most of what we were looking for, basically just drinks and snacks for our 2-day stay in Houston. My father wanted bakery items for breakfast and settled for the usual Hostess and Hostess-like choices you'd find at, again, a convenience store. However, the gentleman behind the register was pleasant and helpful. A customer came in and while checking out casually mentioned he had a close friend die the day before in a car crash. The cashier was very sympathetic and listened to the guy without interrupting or trying to hurry him along. In all, the store has the basics. But if you're looking for an actual grocery store like what you'd typically find in the downtown area of a large city, this is not it.

I know it seems backwards, but you're way less likely to get approached by someone asking you to buy them something. For the record, the store doesn't feel unsafe--homeless unsafe--but sometimes, you just want to grab your groceries in peace. Now, something that never fails to annoy me: one of the entrance doors is always locked. Every time. So you're forced to walk around to the main entrance. Minor, but annoying. Thankfully, the elevators from the garage always work, so silver lining there if you park downstairs. Today I was reminded of another classic Randall's feature: the smell. I stopped in on my bike to grab some veggies and, like clockwork, was hit with that signature aroma, somewhere between a porta-potty and a city park at noon in July. I think it was coming from outside this time... but I've definitely caught a whiff inside before too. Is it overpriced? Yes. Is it so conveniently located that I keep coming back anyway? Also yes. To be fair, the prepared food section and the bread game are on point. If carbs are a love language, this place is fluent. Bonus points: they've added EV charging for our green-driving friends. But I think they shrank some of the parking spots. I watched a jacked-up truck on stilts struggle to park in a handicap space. Waiting for the driver to hop out onto the hood of the next car over.

Big mistake. First off, I get that Houston was bracing for a snowstorm (crazy, I know), so I wasn't shocked that a lot of my requested items were out of stock. Fine, not their fault. But what was their fault? Not actually giving me half of the things I did manage to order! I got home, excited for my stash of groceries, only to realize I had basically made a charitable donation to HEB. No cheese. No sour cream. No coffee. NO MAPLE SYRUP. The donuts? Trash. Stale, lifeless, and the long john with "cream" filling? A cruel joke. Either it never got filled or the cream evaporated from old age. Tried calling the store--no answer. Couldn't go back because the entire city was frozen over for two days. At this point, I just accepted my fate. Maybe they were overwhelmed that day. Maybe it was just bad timing. But I won't be back to find out. Until Montrose finishes its never-ending construction, I'll be looking for another HEB--or honestly, another grocery store altogether.
