We couldn't make a trip to Texas without a stop at H-E-B, and found this store looked larger on the inside than its neighborhood market size appeared. Near the airport and our hotel, we found everything we hoped including spray starch, Sushi, breakfast basics, Cajun/creole section (in the back, cause there sadly isn't any instant roux in the groceries up our way), and fried chicken which smelled amazing. The parking spots are a bit narrow so park with care, but this store had ever hung we hoped and kind staff at the checkout. It was a good oasis to have on our trip read more

I was planning on having dinner with a couple of co-workers at nearby Barn Door, which I previously left a review for. What I didn't mention in that review is that I had arrived way too early, and I needed to kill some time before my co-workers arrived. As soon as I located the steakhouse, I hopped onto Google Maps to see if there were any grocery stores nearby, and wouldn't you know it? There was this H-E-B just a block south! Prior to my dinner, I spent about 20-30 minutes inside the store to simply browse around and see if there was anything interesting to get. This H-E-B has your usual stock of anything and everything, but what caught my eye that evening was the refrigerated Grab & Go section consisting of sandwiches, salads, and microwaveable meals. I didn't get anything prior to dinner, but I returned after dinner to see what I could get for lunch the next day. After a second round of deliberation, I went with the Garden Salad, which was set to expire in a few days, but was still good for lunch the next day. I had forgotten about the dressings sold separately, for a half dollar I believe, and I also forgot about the utensils too. If I had gotten a sandwich or even a wrap, I would have almost certainly forgotten about their packets of mayo and mustard in the same shelf. This H-E-B has more of a Farmer's Market feel to it compared to their counterparts that I've been to. Kind of like a Sprouts Farmers Market in a more rural area if that makes sense. No employees greeted me or offered to help, and there wasn't really anything extraordinary about this H-E-B. However, it is very neighborhood friendly and a welcome addition to the Oak Park neighborhood, which if not for this grocery store, could be considered a food desert. As at any H-E-B you go to, look for coupons on the shelves that you could use on the same visit! read more

The pharmacy app for HEB is rubbish! I unsuccessfully tried paying on the app. It would not permit me. So calling the HEB pharmacy on Nacogdoches, I was informed that the pharmacy could not receive the payment over the phone. For walk-ins they will accept payments. At this statement I was bewildered. I asked, if you are able to accept payments, then why not mine? At this point she said, "It's a trust issue." My response to that was, and you are dealing with drugs! So grateful for this location and for plenty of reasons. It's one of those smaller locations, that neighborhood feel which you most certainly get when you walk in. Today was a unique visit, I needed a corsage. Mind you, I'm almost 40, but there was this super cool event hosted by an amazing culinary outfit that does an adult prom every year. So I had to have something that matched our awkward 80's/90's themed event. So I walked up to the florist, her name is Stephani, she totally rocked it!! Told her what I was doing, she didn't lose a step, immediately asked me what my girls colors were! Within 15 minutes I had the most beautiful white rose corsage. The worst employees. Can't ask them a question cause they are so rude. Managers are the worst. I had 23 items and was in line at a regular checkout but an employee told me to move to express. I told her I had more than 15 items but she said it was okay. The cashier at the express checkout was very rude and mentioned several times that it was the express checkout. I told her that her boss told me to move and to take it up with her. She threw my sodas in my cart. Unacceptable. I complained to the manager but she did not care. Not even an apology. I visit this Heb on a regular basis. I can honestly say that, having frequented this H-E-B for a while now, I really love doing my shopping and business here. Even though not everyone speaks, it is often possible to observe individuals who appear to be managers and higher-level employees roaming the floor. They are always friendly and helpful. My favorite workers are the employees in the business center as they are always so courteous and accommodating. Despite the fact that the selection is somewhat lower than the store at the Basse location it is less crowded and genuinely maintains a sense of community. read more

This is one of my neighborhood H-E-Bs, and I absolutely love it. I'm a huge fan of mid-century modern architecture (one of the main reasons we moved out here), and this H-E-B beautifully captures that moment in time. The interior of the store is also quite whimsical (low wooden ceilings, a toy train above the deli area, oldies playing overhead on occasion). As a matter of fact, there used to be an oak tree growing out of the structure--literally through the roof!--in the deli area. Sadly, it was recently removed, but I'm sure it was for good reason. This is a smaller H-E-B, so it doesn't have as many options as other locations; however, I can always find everything I need here. And I don't know about you, but I prefer having fewer options, lol. It just makes shopping easier! I've never had a problem finding parking (this location is hardly ever packed when I visit), but parking could be problematic during holidays as the Oak Park H-E-B shares a lot with a couple other establishments. On a final note, the staff is really awesome! Everyone is so friendly, and maybe because it's a smaller grocery store, but you really get a family feel when interacting with the familiar faces you see on a weekly basis. There are 2 other H-E-Bs a short distance from our house (along with Walmart, Target, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe's), but this place is our go-to. I ended up having to reach around the counter and grab them myself, whilst trying not to bump into those two employees who were busy having a conversation. This is our family's go to HEB for the past 6 years and its never let us down. It does not have some of the fancier items like the newer locations, but those items are rarley needed. Handy-B! This place has some history. You can tell it's an old supermarket. It's changed hands a few times, and was originally another chain, other than HEB, so it's different from all the other ones. The aisles are fairly narrow, and they don't have quite the selection that the other stores have. Their bakery items are fairly sparse, and they don't have a very big produce section. The freezer section is a fraction of the other ones. The pharmacy here is awesome though. The staff is exceptionally helpful. There's sometimes a train that runs around the deli department, it's been going since the Handy Andy times. The store is always clean, and well lit. read more

This place is beautiful!! I never thought I would use these words for a store. But it really is. I had to make a pit stop to pick up some grocery. It's located between Nacogdoches and Alamo neighborhood. At first when I was looking to park my car I felt congested as it shares parking lot with few restaurants and shops. But when I walked I was surprised to see how beautifully aisles were organized. It wasn't too much crowds but there were customers. I've been to other H-E-B but this one is the captain of all of them. There was no rush whatsoever. Grocery section appeared nice and clean. Nice collection of wines and beer. Words can't do justice. This is yet another very good HEB. I wish they had them in the DFW area. I love their produce, pastries, and HEB brand items. My wife and I stop in to one whenever possible, as she loves their lemon-flavored bottled water and we like their dog-treats for our fur-daughters. They have a huge variety of products, the aisles are wide and clean, and the workers nearly always helpful and friendly. As several reviewers have stated, Oak Park's "Handy-B" offers a more laidback shopping experience. The selection is more basic than other locations, making it great for grabbing "the staples". A few times I've had to travel to find a more 'exotic' item this location doesn't keep stocked. I've noticed some things (like peanut oil) come in smaller containers with a higher sticker price than another location, but overall, this is a great store for running in, grabbing 'the essentials' and running out. The parking lot is a funky shape, but I find it easier to navigate than, say, Austin Hwy & Harry Wurzbach. It's also 'handy' to have traffic lights on either side of the lot to help us get back on the road when traffic in the area is heavier. read more

Which moniker do I prefer for this store. HEB Oak Park or Handy-B due to its Handy Andy roots? Since I always liked the old Handy Andy I will go with the Handy-B. This store seems to be always crowded, I guess it is the narrow aisles or small by today's standards parking lot! No matter the people it has a great feel as a grocery store and generally has everything I am looking for. The "partners" are always willing to help you locate anything. I hate H-E-B for its stranglehold on the local grocery scene. Nevertheless, even I have to admit this particular store is pretty nice: it has better atmosphere - and the cashiers are more competent and pleasant - than at other stores in the chain. Weird, wedge-shaped parking lot - as Jeffrey noted, always crowded. And I don't know whether to attribute it to the entitled, affluent community, or just the fact that lots of seniors (older than me, even!!) shop here, but the parking lot is insanely dangerous. Easy access, though, to both New Braunfels and Nacogdoches - with traffic lights on both sides, to facilitate ingress/egress. Nice place to shop - just beware the geezers in their land yachts! read more

The look of this location is cool, because it's almost like it was maintained to stay functional, but keeps its original look. It doesn't have the super updated look like most of the other HEBs. This HEB has a wider location than a majority of others, but not as much as a Central Market. So it's more like a Market Place. You can get all the local deals, fresh produce and more variety of items and especially wine and beer. Love that they provide local Texas brews. read more

My favorite HEB. Been shopping here for decades. The staff is great and haven't changed / aged one bit. The business center staff is great and funny. The employees take pride in making sure the store is clean, well stocked and customers are happy. So glad they also have self check out now...makes so much faster. Only one thing....they should put register #'s on the floor at the end of the isle, instead of letting customers block the main isle...makes for less confusion.
