Okay, so after I described my bad experience with this dentist, I got a response from this office immediately apologizing for what happened. Well I was surprised that they saw my review right away. Then a few days later I received an email from yelp telling me that my review was removed because I 'did not provide too much details or tips about this business'. I wrote about 200 words about this business, not detailed enough? I wondered why this dentist had such a high review but horrible service, well this might have explained why. Think my old review wasn't detailed enough? Okay here is how I revised it and made it detailed with tips: Couldn't imagine how this dentist got 5 stars. I went to this clinic a year ago to do teeth cleaning after I did research on yelp. The lady who did cleaning for me was very nice and did a good. But the Dr Wu looked at my X-Ray pictures and told me I needed to do lots of work since my teeth condition was 'very bad'. The lady sitting next to the front desk, I think her name was Maria or something, she said they could not give me any discount. But right after I told them it was too expensive and left she called me and told me they were able to gave me 50% off my part but they had to charge the max from my dental insurance. So I decided to do a few of them but not all. I had a root canal, a crown, and after that I had 3 fillings. Those cost me tons of money but I thought I did the right thing because Dr wu took care of my teeth. But no. The 6 months after that I had been miserable. I had to go back as emergency because the one I did root canal with caused lots of pain (and they charged emergency fee even it was their fault). And the other morning when I woke up I found the crown Dr Wu put on for me fell off and I almost swallowed it! This time I decided to go to another dentist. After the exam the dentist told me what Dr Wu did for me 'was very aggressive and unnecessary'. I had to spend another huge amount of money to repair them. It was the worst experience ever! So tip No.1, it's ok to do cleaning here. The lady knows what she is doing. Tip No.2, if you really want the 50% off, just walk away, they will call you. Tip No.3, do not do big teeth work with Dr Wu. You have 50% to fail your teeth! Tip No.4, always get the second opinion! Dr. Wu is awesome!!! He would not mind to spend time to explain all the details and show you the problems using X-rays and mouth videoing device. He also always carries a warm smile when explaining. He would plan the insurance budget with you together and contact the insurance company ahead of the time to make sure which procedures would get approved. The equipment is very up to date, and His staff are very likable and helpful. So far I have done deep cleanings as well as extracting two of my wisdom teeth, and the latter did not hurt as much as i expected. I had sort of phobia before on seeing dentists, but Dr. Wu made it all go away, and I'm much more willing to have my teeth regularly examined and fixed. I recommended Dr. Wu to my wife afterward, and here is her version of the impression on Dr. Wu: "I went to a another well reviewed DDS on yelp first to consult the possible implant. The first DDS instead asked me to take out the wisdom teeth first before discussing anything else, even though none of my wisdom teeth was hurting at the time. No mention of the patient's implant concerns at all in the end!!! Then after hearing all the good reviews about Dr. Wu, I went to see him as well, with the first appointment being a FREE second opinion consultation, which took about half an hour. Dr. Wu not only went over the wisdom teeth issue, but also explained thoroughly on the possible ways of addressing the implant issue. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~The HIGHLIGHT!!!!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In my following appointment to do the teeth cleaning, Dr. Wu pointed out that he saw a huge cavity through the paranoma X-ray, which was taken by the previous great reviewed DDS but which cavity was never discovered. None of my previous dentists had pointed out to me either, so I assume they missed it as well, but apparently it has existed for several years. I feel so grateful to make the decision transfer to Dr. Wu. The location is convenient, with good parking, flexible hours (open on Saturday, which most dentists don't), but most importantly, Dr. Wu and his staff are very patient-centric." I've been coming to this dental facility for a few years now and have always had excellent service. Cleanings have been very thorough and I always feel I'm being well taken care of. I've also had other dental work completed by Dr. Wu (i.e. dental bridges) and I've been extremely happy with the result. I had to share my thoughts with you all, so I decided to create my first ever Yelp account. - This is highly commercialized clinic, You are guaranteed to get X-ray taken even if you just took one, and you know that you don't need it - again! I agree, it won't cost you anything, and its for the dentist to decide, they bill your Insurance, but its it really necessary to put you through those "Rays" while you didn't need it? - Rude - Secretary is really rude, she is bossy, loves to argue. I found she has full support of her Dentist boss, so, no, don't waste time letting him know how you feel. I called for an appointment with a toothache. The entire experience was positive. The receptionist helped me with some insurance issues that I had. The dental assistant worked with me and had a quick x-ray completed. Dr. Wu looked at the x-ray and did some simple tests to show I had to get a root canal as soon as possible. He explained in detail and in a simple manner what the issue is and what needs to be done to correct the situation. Dr. Wu cleans my teeth every time (you can request that instead of having a dental hygenist). He's nice and understands about dental insurance. There's been many places where I like the dentist but they end up screwing up my billing. The front desk is nice. He does a through job and has all the up to date equipment. He does Invisalign. I was a hot mess when I cracked my wisdom tooth and when I went to see Dr. Wu he suggested I should take them all out. Today, was my extraction day and I was completely happy I did it. What an amazing dentist is John Wu! Came here after many bad experiences with dentists wanting to push a lot of work on me, almost to the point of bullying. Not here. Dr. Wu will simply do the visit, voice his concerns and then ask "is this or that bothering you?" and guess what, he will actually listen to his patients. His attitude is if it ain't broke, don't fix it. We have even had him do work outside of insurance on a friend visiting from abroad, he gave her all her options, did a wonderful job and ended up charging very little. Dr. Wu is a great dentist, but what I really appreciate is that he doesn't recommend any expensive procedures when there is a less expensive alternative treatment that could be tried first. I actually recall telling him that I would be happy to get seals on my teeth, just so that I wouldn't have to deal with any potential toothaches in the future, but he insisted that we try a prescription fluoride paste first. Doctor Wu is the best dentist I have seen in a U.S. clinic. It is not only his full dental knowledge and experience , but also he is very courtesy with his patients. Dr Wu is probably the best dentist I have ever gotten. Here's why: - he explains things clearly and slowly then asks you if that makes sense and you understand it. He will re-explain if necessary. - he is pretty conservative with doing stuff. He often says "Well, if its not bothering you, we probably don't need to do any work on that. If it starts bothering you, maybe we can do something about it later." I guess he doesn't have this fear that you're gonna go do the big expensive stuff at another dentist, like a lot of other dentists seem to. - he's actually the only dentist who hasn't "strongly recommended" removing my wisdom teeth. Ironically, having had him as my dentist the past year or so, the space between one of my wisdom teeth and the prior teeth, started bleeding when I'd floss it. Even when I was telling him about this, he said "it actually looks OK, you might not need to remove the wisdom teeth" and I agreed that it wasn't insanely bad, but that being 28 years old and actually having dental insurance right now, its probably a good idea to just do it, especially since I trusted Dr Wu quite a bit. - I got my wisdom teeth pulled out yesterday, and am feeling quite well today. I'm almost like "Uhh...what is everyone talking about, complaining about this surgery? No big deal." I got kinda freaked out during part of the removal (I know...big tough guy Tom, getting scared...) and Dr Wu was pretty good at keeping me reassured and stopped for however long I needed to get sane again. So yeah. If you're in San Mateo, or you can get to San Mateo, Dr Wu is your go to guy. Won't recommend stuff you don't need, won't overcharge you, and will actually do a good job as well. read more
