My 20th and last NYC review (finally...) is H Mart on 32nd Street. It's a large supermarket chain with locations from the East Coast to the West Coast. Products sold here are predominantly Korean, but not exclusively. According to Wikipedia, the "H" stands for Han Ah Reum, which translates to "one arm full of groceries". It's a very fitting name, since everything you buy here has to fit in your arms. Space is a luxury in the city, so the aisles are not wide enough for shopping carts. Honestly, there's barely enough room for two people to walk side by side. So if you're planning to buy more than you can hold, bring friends or make multiple trips. They do have baskets for you to carry around. I wouldn't park here. The underground garage next door costs $11.00 for 30 minutes and $35.00 for 1 hour. Walk or take the subway. This location is about a quarter of the size of a regular H Mart you would find in the suburbs. So selection overall is limited and pricey. They don't have a customer-facing seafood or meat counter, everything is prepackaged. I didn't see Soju anywhere. There's also no food court here. I have a feeling they are a licensed store, because they don't participate in the rewards program. They do a decent job, given the constraints they have. More like 3.5 I would say the H Mart at this location is smaller than the one around East Village / NYU. This location doesn't have the designated hot food and fried chicken section as the other one which I'm ok with. This H Mart wins with its convenient location right in the middle of Koreatown close to all the restaurants and major transportation. The store is packed from to ceiling with myriad of all kinds of items: produce, drinks, prepared food / banchan, canned goods, nuts, snacks, ramen, frozen food and household items. On the flip side, with them optimizing every square inch of the spaces for packing in all the goodies. It could get a bit cramped when there are a lot people inside. They also have a prepared food section in the front by the checkout registers - a great variety of mochis, walnut cake (that looks just like actual walnuts! I guess you could say I'm somewhat a regular shopper here. Not much to say except that it's a go to place for Korean groceries and they also carry some albeit limited standard supermarket fare. Definitely a must if you're a kimchi fan like myself. They carry a great variety of kimchi, various pickled/kimchi spiced veggies, Kimchi flavored Ramen noodle cups/bowls. They carry various Korean/Asian potato chips/snacks although you're better off getting them cheaper elsewhere, for example at Teso Life, which is a popular Asian brand store chain and which I frequent as well from time to time. Regular 'American' groceries, including vegetables and fruits, I would advise getting anywhere else, such as your local supermarket. As those goods are much more expensive here and the choice is very limited. When you first enter H Mart there's a bakery/bread section and they have nice various single serving rolls/buns and those are good to grab to have as a breakfast whether at work or at home. This is a good pit stop to grab Korean goodies and otherwise before jumping on the train home and or are in a rush but just keep in mind that prices here are much higher, bcs one, it's in Midtown, and two, it's in K Town. read more

Located in ktown, right by herald square station (B, D, F, M). The aisles are pretty narrow and it can get pretty crowded. I recommend coming in the morning so there is less people. They have a decent selection of korean bbq meat, sashimi, noodles, and, fresh produce. It is a smaller h mart than you would find in the burbs but they have all the essentials Asian items that one would look for (i.e. soy sauce, sesame oil, instant noodles, pre made banchan (korean side dishes). It is on the pricier side. Everything adds up pretty quickly (i.e. pack of oyster mushrooms was like 4.99). You pay for convenience. read more

Greedy owners always taking advantage of locals, i get that a lot of tourists also stop by here but seriously it's very upsetting to see a Korean establishment really hate its own kind and community. There are also lots of students and regular hard working people that live nearby and hmart being the convenient asian grocery store, we are forced to just fork it over when in need. With the sky high inflated rent, food, drinks, clothes, etc... they can't give their locals a break by offering fair market price? Sometimes you can't always order online to save a few bucks, sometimes you can't swing to chinatown to grab some bok choy, and sometimes you're just tired and need a few quick ingredients. Hmart knows this and exploits the situation. And don't believe their "supply chain" BS excuse, they've been making so much profit over the past decades.. hell they can even afford to expand to upstairs and create a whole ass food court. -During early Covid (April to June)- Social distance shopping was enforced by security who acted like a bouncer at the front entrance. There was limited occupancy; another staff just inside the entrance handing out gloves and the shopping baskets to each shopper once they entered. Hand Sanitizer located right there as well so you can clean and put on the gloves they gave out. Same long line to register to pay but social distancing 6ft apart. -Covid after June- It isn't as crazy and they started running out of gloves to give people. Just use the hand sanitizer and grab your basket. There isn't a long line outside the door anymore or maybe I just arrive at a time where they no longer need to police the entrance. Bring your own bags or pay the bag fee. Everything is still good quality and some gotten more expensive (but HMart was always abit pricey). I recently gotten into cooking more Korean cuisine so I bought the earthware bowls for the sundubu-jjigae which I started buying more of the BCD tofu starter kits. I will say this, all of the HMart Kimichi is mostly country style for the last few years... but I vaguely remember they used to carry another brand/type of kimichi that doesn't have shrimp paste in it. I'm allergic to shrimp and miss the old kimichi style where they used anchovies- now I can't buy any kimichi at Hmart unless it's the vegan type. They charged me something that I didn't buy, very sneaky business overall. It's not my first time having issue with their dishonest services. Receipt mostly says 'Asian grocery' for every different items so it's not clear what you bought. Please be aware and check your receipt every time you buy there. One time I ordered online and they didn't send something but still charged. Another time their meat was full of bones underneath the top layer so it looks good and the weight is heavy. They are just bunch of scammer trying to rip off customers and when they get caught oops! sorry for that? They don't let me shop after the store hrs. (Most of the supermarket let...but this place doesn't.) Security guards come from the behind, and saying "Close!x1.00000000" till the customers go to the cashier. I won't come to shop at least half hrs before they close. Cashiers are friendly. A South Korean style market that steps it up a few notches. Their prepared banchan, and sushi fish was top notch and so delectable. The store is narrow in size and goes deep in the end of the store. H Mart is my favorite place to hang while I wait for a table at Jongro. It's a super well curated selection of Asian good in a reasonably sized store- especially for the area. It's extremely clean, well lit, and the checkout is insanely fast. H Mart is always super crowded, even at the late evening hours. But, they manage to cram a really diverse selection into well organized shelves. There is a seafood and fish selection, prepared foods, any vegetable/mushroom, a reasonable meat selection, and of course frozen foods. They also have a ton of fun snacks and candy that you'd find in a typical Asian grocery store. If you're in the neighborhood it's one of the better markets nearby. I was debating if I should give this Hmart a 3 or 4, but I will have to round down on this one. Being the only Hmart in Manhattan, this location is conveniently located in the heart of Koreatown, or 32nd Street. As you can imagine, this Hmart is tiny due to the tight space of NYC and doesn't offer the full amenities of a typical Hmart. It has all the groceries you would look for, but it is more pricy considering it is in NYC. They also don't have food courts or anything of that sort as it is a very small location. Surprisingly, this location is an expanded version from a smaller size and it was literally the size of like a bedroom at one point! They don't have everything but they do have a lot of packaged foods, typical Korean grocery and it seems like they have everything a convenience store would carry. While I was tempted to give it four stars due to the experience and ambiance, I'm opting for three on this one as it has too much of a limited selection and the hiked price of goods. read more

The biggest mistake I've made this year was visiting this location's H Mart. Their staffs were EXTREMELY RUDE; treating customers like objects AND criminals! Upon entering, the staff by the door violated the COVID precaution policy by pulling my arm. If you are a manager reading this, you can check your security camera. It happened at around 5:30pm today. That moron should not be touching customers! He can speak if he wants to show me something, no? First, he puts his dirty hands on me which I do not appreciate. Second, he fails to take precaution by touching customers which is also H Mart's responsibility. Third, don't pull customers. H Mart really failed to train their staffs. I was in the store for less than a minute. I came in looking for something very specific and they didn't have it so I walked right out. They also forced me to take a stupid basket upon entry which I already told them I didn't need. They didn't respect their customer's wishes. They forced a stupid red basket upon me. This was already a bad experience. Upon exiting, I put the basket back with other baskets and the security guard demands to look inside my bag. This is absolutely ridiculous! I was livid. I feel bullied and treated like a criminal in this store! Thanks H Mart for providing such an awful experience and poor customer service on the first day of the year! On my one and only visit, I was assisted by a very nice employee who was showing me around the store where all the stuff I needed was located. However, because it was almost closing time and in the middle of my interaction, several security guards aggressively approached me and cut me off in the middle of my conversation to tell me they were closing soon. I acknowledged this and said I would be wrapping up very soon, just needed one more item that was being located. These mofos started following me around the store and one even yelled at me because he wanted me to drop everything and walk to the front of the store, even though there was some 10-min left before closing time and I was still in the middle of getting assistance by the store employee. The unfounded treatment infuriated me and I confronted the guard that was the most aggressive and exchanged some heated words with him. That's NOT how you treat paying customers. I like the grocery selections as well as the prepared food selections. Fresh fish and seafood are always in abundance. I like being able to sample things that I don't know about. The only things I am constantly frustrated about is that if I have an Asian recipe that calls for certain things, I may not find those ingredients because all labelling is in Korean or Japanese, and there's no one to ask. But all in all, and even though it's more expensive than other vegetable markets, this is my favorite Asian grocery store because they have just about everything. Except Thai basil. read more

When I entered, the place was quite narrow but long compared to the H Mart in Long Island City and East Village. However, they have everything. The banchan is premade in a freezer where the groceries were in the back of the store. Ordered the stir-fried anchovy with nuts. It wasn't spicy. Coronavirus store hours are 9AM-6PM. Monday to Sunday. Has everything you could need for lockdown. Hot and cold premade foods, perishables, and fully stocked snacks and drinks. If Trader Joes still has long lines going around the block, H Mart may be a good option for you to refill your pantry. The only downside is the weird way they cut Jackfruit. This location is super tightly packed so you'll be squeezing in between people constantly but other than that they have a great selection of Asian groceries. Dumplings, kimchi, veggies, teas, meats, snacks, etc. you can get it all. The prices are a little higher than your average store so be prepared to spend. The street it's on is also really busy with restaurants and stores so if you drive it's rough. However, if you're ever in jersey the location in Paramus is huge and has a whole food court so that one is def worth a visit too! read more

Glad this HMart is open during covid, and require masks for entry. They are also passing out and require all shoppers to wear disposable plastic gloves (which....if there were already germs on your hands and you touched the outside of the gloves before putting them on, then aren't they ineffective?), I gave them an extra brownie point for effort. All the staff wears masks although in the tight spaces within the store it's pretty difficult to social distance. Didn't seem to be a limit on number of customers inside the store at one time, but generally speaking it seemed most people were doing pretty brisk shopping. Everyone lines up in a single file for check out, and there are plastic dividers in front of the cashiers set up at the check out counters. Only one customer at a time is allowed to approach each counter. This HMart outpost occupies a pretty small space compared to other locations, so the selection is abbreviated. Also the prices are higher considering midtown, but it's still nice to pick up some Korean staples when needed. read more
