    1. Roy's Special Sushi
    Mosa H.

Incredible quality fish at great prices. We called early, right when they opened, and our sushi sets were ready around 12:30pm. The tuna is so fatty and the salmon is so tender. All of the sushi was melted in my mouth. The rolls were taller than I thought they would be. It's a pick-up situation.

I've been to Roy's fish market twice now and cannot wait to return. It's a small, hole in the wall type place that only sells sushi/sashimi for take out. Be sure to order ahead of time! There is always about a 2 hour wait, especially around dinner times, regardless of day of the week. I usually call ahead many hours in advance. Both times, I got the Roy's special combination set which comes out to about $39 with tax. They do take card but I always pay in cash. The sashimi slices are thick and decadent, truly "melt in your mouth". The sushi rice is well cooked and seasoned. I think for how much you are paying, you get really good restaurant quality sushi. I can't wait to go back again!

Yes I totally went back! This time to get the small platter as it would only be 3 of us eating. And it was perfect ! In fact, it was actually too much food! I just absolutely love Roy's. I just cannot believe it has taken me so long to discover this spot. I'm a fan.

Food/drinks: order ahead!!!! Do not wait in line! Tasted fresh! Loved the Roy's special & you can buy fish by the lb here Atmosphere: small shop, kinda like a mini fish market inside! Tiny bench to sit on, definitely a take out spot Service: good service! Ran by one person so they're very busy Price: very affordable it's kinda insane?

Super fresh fish! Super small store. Mainly just for pick-up orders. It's usually a one man show so he does take some time. There's usually a hour plus wait so it's best to call in to place your order a few hours ahead of time. I called around 1pm for a 5pm pickup. I went at 5pm and it was all ready to go! The quality of the fish is definitely a notch higher than other places/restaurants I've eaten at. The price point is a bit high but you're getting what you pay for. Would recommend!

4.5/5 Roy's Special A Set ($19.5): superb quality fish, especially loved the salmon nigiri pieces! Only -0.5stars as other reviewers alluded to, it is a bit pricey for the serving size. I do think the sashimi platter looks like better value, so I will be sure to order that next time. Also a tip to call and order ahead, as Roy is a one man show, and does take a bit of time with orders.

Tuna and Yellowtail Combo. Around $22. Excellent quality fish. Rice is a bit subpar for the fish quality unfortunately

Major side note: The menu online specifically lists it was an upload from November 2017 so yes the prices are way higher than what is listed online and the guy should probably update the PDF on there so less people complain about the price point. For instance, the Tuna and Yellowtail Combo used to be $13, then it became $16, and now it's almost $22. It's an 8 year old menu so yep. Honestly, I don't mind the price point as the sushi quality here is much better than the places in the surrounding area. I had said combo which consisted of one tuna maki, one yellowtail maki, and 3 pieces each of tuna and yellowtail. The fish quality was excellent though I do wish the rice quality was up to snuff as this is probably one of the few things that is lacking here compared to many of the other better sushi places which the price points here imitate. It clumps a bit too easily and could be flavored better but hey it's really more of a fresh fish place rather than a sushi and sashimi place and you get what you get especially for takeout. A sign from a local place currently by me in Cobble Hill called Fish Tales describes this place and it's price point; "fresh fish isn't cheap and cheap fish isn't fresh." I'll go back and try more things as the scallops look particularly outstanding here and I wouldn't mind trying the other offerings as long as they don't involve my unfortunate allergy to all things tentacles. Low 4 though this could bump to a 5 if the rest of the menu is just as good.

So good! Call as soon as they open and you can schedule a time to pick up. We go the sushi and sashimi combo and the roy's special combo - the roy's special combo is def a better bang for your buck in terms of the sheer amount of food you are getting. All the pieces of fish absolutely melted in my mouth and the fish is of superb quality. Take-out only, and this would definitely be my to-go spot more if I lived in the area!

Finally got a chance to try their sushi/sashimi today and it's worth it. I arrived around 12:45 pm and a line formed behind me. There was only 1 person making orders. Roy, was that you?? I ordered the sushi/sashimi combo. Fish was fresh and cut was perfect - $26 for all that food? YES. Definitely cannot wait to go back. Give Roy's a try if you're in the area. You won't regret it.

Read the reviews and called in my order around 10:45am. He said it would be ready in 40 mins (11:20am). Glad I saw the reviews and called it in. It's a small store with a bench to wait. He was finishing up our order as we walked in. It was just him making the orders, answering the phone and taking more orders. I had ordered 4 o-toro pieces and he threw in another one for free. Also, upgraded our uni to Hokkaido uni. He's been running the store since 1996 and there's a little trophy near the cashier desk for hardest working man in New York and I believe it. It was $96 for everything combined (scallop, tuna, salmon combo + ikura, masago, sea urchin, tuna combo + 4 o-toro pieces($7 each piece)). As a lover of sushi and omakase, I've definitely spent a lot more for a lot less sushi. I walked to Central Park and had a great picnic. The fish was fresh and tasty.

Roys is by far the best no frills sushi takeout counter in NYC. Come for a piece of sushi grade fresh fish or even better his sushi which is just sublime. Fresh, nice cuts, good variety.

This is a hidden gem on the UES. Unassuming store front, but really great sushi and it was super fresh too. This was my first time here so I didn't know that there's usually a wait for orders. So if you want to order from here, call in advance to place it. Roy does everything himself (I think he's a one man show), so gotta give him some time. Overall, I really liked this local spot and Roy warmed up after I stopped by again, so don't be turned off if he seems stand offish. He does a great job making all the sushi by hand himself and he's actually really sweet.

came here after my sister saw this place online. street parking available right in front space is a bit tight, only a couple of chairs to wait (they only do take away, no sit down) staff is sweet unfortunately they were only taking orders for pick up for later (more than 3hours) which i found a bit annoying as this place is a bit out of the way and there's not much to do around this area while waiting so you lose time going there and coming back & the time is long so you can't just sit around & wait. i do believe you can call ahead a time but i would call and confirm as we didn't know until we got there (that's our fault for not researching) the sushi is definitely cheaper than most places and you get your best bang for your buck than your typical restaurant or omakase; however i felt as though the some of the sushi was fishy and not AS great quality as people were hyping it up to be (we got the basic sashimi set; not the huge catering) -hence just the "ok" stars i say if you're around the area, def check it out but if you're not in the area and don't want to go back & forth, it's not really worth it.. i'd honestly pay a little bit more for better quality that's closer to the center city nothing too remarkable unfortunately

The peasant loaf bread was fine and everyone enjoyed it - 6oz lobster roll ($38)--a delicious cold lobster roll with a mayo-based sauce, great flavor, and a soft buttery bun - 20 oysters ($3.75 ea)--all fresh and delicious, primarily East Coast oysters although they occasionally have some West Coast ones. Fisher's Island was akin to drinking straight sea water - 5 Peruvian scallops--small and sweet with a strawberry sauce - 2 California uni ($19 ea)--one was incredibly sweet, clean tasting, and much better than the other, which was slightly more bitter and minerally - 2 diver scallops ($15 ea)--drizzled with olive oil, yuzu, and sea salt - 8 shrimp cocktail ($3.25 ea)--one of the most unworth things I've tried in recent times because the shrimp was so cold it tasted barely thawed and was watery with almost no flavor You order at the counter or via paper ticket and they bring everything to your table. Aqua Best also supplies seafood to some of New York City's top fine-dining restaurants, which speaks to the quality and consistency you can expect. I went to buy in-shell scallops and he said to "pick the heaviest ones, they have more meat" but what he really means is they're packed with sand. Funny enough, he didn't try giving me this advice the next time I went to buy and looked in the crack to see if they're full of sand. Also went to buy female blue crabs and he wanted to choose them, he spent like 5 minutes digging through the bucket and 5/6 of the crabs were totally empty inside (you can feel if they're hefty when picking). No idea why customers aren't allowed to pick their own crabs but he can dig and dig and throw them around. I'm familiar with picking seafood and gave him the benefit of the doubt two separate times before I realized he's trying to sell off the worst products and that benefit of the doubt is undeserved.
