Jackfruit during the summer, only $5 and already prepared!

Oh this open market is a gem for fruit. With a handful of cash, these are the fruits I splurge on--that are hardly a "splurge" because they're so reasonably priced: - $5 boxes of jackfruit. Already prepared and separated for you. This was literally $15 for the same fruit at some other durian/jackfruit stand on Hester. - Muscat Italian grapes - Longan - Peaches Easily located next to the subway entrance/exit.

Shrimp and fish prices. All look pretty fresh, too.

Relatively clean for a Chinatown retail operation. I came here to get sea scallops and jumbo shrimp. I absolutely recommend buying the jumbo shrimp from here. They were GREAT shrimp. Very firm and very fresh. Not super jumbo, but definitely big enough for the pasta dish that I cooked it for. Now, the sea scallops are a different story. They weren't terrible or even bad, but when I bought them at the store they looked enormous! I was thinking, wow, these are such big scallops, how wonderful. For half a pound there were about 6 giant scallops. The problem came when I started to cook them. Based on how they cook, they had obviously been stored in some sort of water or saline solution prior to being on display, because once I started to cook them sooooooo much water came out from them and they shrank by a lot! Meaning, I paid for mostly water. They were $8.99/pound which was a great price, but considering the fact that most of the weight is water, it isn't so great. It took longer to cook them because during the first 5 minutes of cooking they were just losing water, shrinking and not browning at all. For the future, I would just come here to buy shrimp, not scallops. I've never bought fish from Chinatown, though - still iffy on that, especially due to the recent skin disease outbreak in fish in Chinatown! Shrimp = 5/5 stars Scallops = 1.5/5 stars

Even with the horrid smell of Chinatown, it's still worth the trek through the funky smells on the street.

To order, you fill out a paper sheet for the raw bar items and place a separate order in the back for kitchen fare. Every time I've been here, the seafood has been incredibly fresh and delicious. It's definitely not cheap though and our most recent meal came out to almost $500 after tip. We ordered: - 2 bread bowl NE clam chowders ($15 ea)--delicious and hearty. The peasant loaf bread was fine and everyone enjoyed it - 6oz lobster roll ($38)--a delicious cold lobster roll with a mayo-based sauce, great flavor, and a soft buttery bun - 20 oysters ($3.75 ea)--all fresh and delicious, primarily East Coast oysters although they occasionally have some West Coast ones. Fisher's Island was akin to drinking straight sea water - 5 Peruvian scallops--small and sweet with a strawberry sauce - 2 California uni ($19 ea)--one was incredibly sweet, clean tasting, and much better than the other, which was slightly more bitter and minerally - 2 diver scallops ($15 ea)--drizzled with olive oil, yuzu, and sea salt - 8 shrimp cocktail ($3.25 ea)--one of the most unworth things I've tried in recent times because the shrimp was so cold it tasted barely thawed and was watery with almost no flavor You order at the counter or via paper ticket and they bring everything to your table. Staff have always been friendly and service was great. They sell fresh fish and some frozen specialty items like escargot. I don't know if anything would ever deter me from coming back here :)

This week I tried the strawberry shortcake and white meringue cake. The strawberry topper was a little old but the rest of the cake was moist and fresh. They really load it with a generous amount of whipped cream. I wish there was more cake and less filling. A minor issue though. This cake is way better than those offered by other large chain grocery stores. Very dependable. Love the elegant box and delicate orange ribbon - very nice touch.

They only had a handful of supporters, but Citarella's soldiers were LOUD! I respect that. $15.15 for a whole bird is steep but expected of these higher end grocery stores. I checked out and brought it to the Westside highway on one of the most perfect days that has ever blessed New York City. We have about a month before walking outside is like walking into a steam room, so I'm doing my best to enjoy these. This was a good chicken, but not great, and we all know that good is the sworn enemy of great. The breast was decently tender, but was a bit dry and lacked flavor. Skin was cooked well and the leg was banging, but the overall flavor just left a bit to be desired. 7.9/10 feels perfect, which is ranks it #7 out of 19 grocery store birds I have currently tried. I'm very particular about where my seafood comes from, so I did some digging and discovered Aqua Best. Steven, the owner, runs a family-focused operation, and the difference is clear: he and his team are exceptionally knowledgeable and friendly. The market itself has a clean, inviting feel with no off-putting odor, which is a huge plus. Their staff genuinely knows their seafood and can answer questions with confidence. Aqua Best also supplies seafood to some of New York City's top fine-dining restaurants, which speaks to the quality and consistency you can expect. I decided to give them a try and left with Bronzino, Snapper, and Gulf Shrimp. All three were superb--fresh, well-prepared help in selecting portions, and clearly handled with care. If you're picky about seafood quality, provenance, and customer service, Aqua Best is worth a visit.

Gourmet Garage had a small but vocal minority of people saying their bird could contend with the heavyweights. I laughed it off. On a humid unassuming summer day, I hopped on a citi bike and came over here on my lunch break. I was thinking I just needed to check this one off the list. However, I felt a chill down my spine when I saw the text on the box that read "Latin Seasoned Rotisserie Chicken." LATIN SEASONED!?! That may as well be my bat signal. A whole bird ran $7.99, and I sat down at one of the tables right in front of this Gourmet Garage to consume. There was no time to find a park, I had to get back to my 9-5. Upon first bite I knew, this was one of them ones. A title contender bird. The iconic latin seasoning was pronounced in every bite. Flavor everywhere. It ended up landing at a 9.3/10 and currently ranks #3 out of 82 grocery store tissis I've tried. A true underdog story. You can't judge a book by its cover, and you certainly can't judge a rotisserie chicken by its location. Once again I am shown that the more I see in this big beautiful world, the less I know.
