    Selection of Korean appliances
    James A.

Another outpost of the growing HMart empire, HMart downtown Vancouver is located inside of what looks like a converted retail (non grocery) space and office building. When you walk in, the first floor is a related (but independent) store selling Korean related cosmetics, skin products, kitchen appliances, and toys. You can also go up the escalators to the 2nd floor to visit the grocery store and food court. The escalator forces you to exit into the storeIt's really cramped up there....no way that people should be allowed to use carts, so instead baskets with wheels were being used. We just wanted to eat dinner, so had to first exit the grocery store to find the area where restaurants were. At this time, only one stall was open. It was a generic store, serving generic Korean dishes. You must place and pay for your order at one kiosk, which can get backed up. Once you place your order, they will ding their bell for you to pick it up. The dining room is very narrow, only allowing one set of 4 person tables. It's very cramped. As for the food, it's a list of Korean food greatest hits, at reasonable prices...if the food quality and quantity was better. spicy pork with rice ($14.99) - it comes out similar to bibimbap, with things all mixed together. They use the purple Korean rice, and it also came with some miso soup. The pork was very spicy. Soybean Stew with Brisket ($16.99) - comes with purple rice. It did come with some the same thinly sliced brisket that you can get at Korean BBQ places. The soup tasted fine. One huge advantage I was counting on for a HMart owned stall, is that much of the food is also available in the store so prices and quantity should be lower than a comparable separated restaurant. I didn't really feel like that was the case. I knew what the food court atmosphere was like (no service), so didn't mind that...but thought there would be better variety and value. The food was OK, and they did hand out banchun, but the amount was laughable. This would NOT be a good starting point for someone to be introduced to Korean cuisine.

A great spot for Korean/Asian groceries downtown. There are usually a lot of specials and the fresh produce is quite nice. The food court is also decent for a quick meal.

The location is nice, the store itself is really crowded! However compare to the H mart in Seattle, this is honestly superrr nice. The people are nice. The Korean jewelry and makeup section are a bit overpriced tho! Definitely will come back and get more snacks!

Love the food court here. Be it for the quick and cheap bentos, the deliciously spicy toppoki/ Tteok-bokki (however you spell it) or the spicy beef broth noodle . Yum! Also a great place for Asian snacks and grocery in Downtown :)

NOTE: This review is specifically for H Mart Cafeteria. Food -- 3/5 Not too bad for what it is. Good quality cheap food and a lot of selection; they have Japanese, Chinese and Korea stalls here -- the Japanese stall is a separate entity, so I'll be excluding that from this review. I've had mostly everything on the menu; personal faves are the beef stone bowl with glass noodles and the rice cakes with spicy sauce. I would warn that there is a pretty drastic range of food quality, between the good and the bad. Atmosphere 0/5 -- It's a cafeteria so there's that. They still manage to make it feel worse though. Cramped, would be my go-to descriptor. The bathroom is also, always freezing. Sitting on the toilet seat is like wading through a river -- so cold it takes your breath away. They have these rows of four tables all cramped together, where if you sat by the window, it would be impossible to move if someone else sits next to you. Bad enough sitting like that is uncomfortable to begin with, but you also can't move if someone sits near you. Then there's the round tables/the place where they store all of their excess chairs. Why do they have so many chairs, if there isn't any room for people to even sit on them? Service 2/5 -- No table service, so there's that too. But probably the worst thing is that sometimes the staff will disappear from the counter, with no indication or sign warning that they're on break. What the hell? Cleanliness 2/5 -- Tables are mostly clean, but not always. The dish drop off area is right next to where some of the food is picked up. Overall 1.75/5 -- If you don't care about service, atmosphere or cleanliness, it's not a bad place to go. I guess. Cheap food that has some gems.

Cheap eats and decent tasting food especially for a food court. Additional discounts when it is late! Tried out their grilled salmon, kimbap and spicy rice cakes. The rice cakes were really mushy because it had been sitting in the box for some time but the kimbap was good! The salmon was a little bit dry and salty but a good price. Overall, i always walk by the food court area just to check for specials to grab on the way out.

H Mart is very popular in the USA and its probably because more Korean reside over there. So came here to shop and see what is on sale. This is not my first time here. Things are usually more expensive due to the competition. There are people shopping here and there are quite a bit of specialty items that you might not be able to find elsewhere. The place is two floors but its a bit crammed inside. I find that when you walk in the cashier or people who works there watches you very closely and at times it can make you very uncomfortable.

When I finally had time to go to H Mart, I was excited. As I was leaving, I felt a little let down. The market didn't have a lot of selection and the prices aren't very good. I guess I went in with an expectation that it would be closer to T n T supermarket, but tried to keep in mind that the rent must be exorbitant downtown. I had the Beef Rib Broth noodle soup in the food court area. It was extremely average since all there were pieces of unchewable beef, egg and way too much rice noodles. It came with a small side dish of kimchi, which was appreciated since everything else was bland. If that combo was $6-$7 instead of $8.50 (before tax) it would be more reasonably priced. Although I was a little disappointed, I'd give this place another shot. There are quite a bit of Korean and other Asian food available here. There's also a bakery downstairs selling whole cakes or individual sized sweets.

The more I taste Korean food, the more I get into the culture. When I saw they had a supermarket, I didn't hesitate on checking it out. Now, I even have a points card! I really enjoy shopping at this place. Although the 2nd floor aisles are narrow, they managed to stock them wisely (look for the management choices). One of my plenty of guilty pleasures are instant noodles, H Mart has a whole section of tasty flavours, including those super-spicy, with the crazy chicken picture (I can't deal with half of the spicy envelope). The fresh produce section is petite but effective. I have found ready to eat avocados, halves of cabbages, affordable peppers, cute Asian mushrooms, veggies we Mexican people use and like. The thin slices of beef are very advisable. I fixed great creations with them. They could improve the grain section, but I forgive them because they sold me a great pot. What about the beauty section? It's crazy original! I want everything. I'm infatuated with the snail gel, it really helps delicate skin. I love the creativity of Koreans.

Staff is mostly pretty nice. Occasionally I've met employees who seem unhappy to be having to deal with me, but those are a minority. I say I "used to" like Nester's because today I came here to grab a quick dinner, and as I was leaving, a mouse ran out from underneath the condiments/trash counter in the eating area, running right into my foot before scurrying out of sight again. Seeing that this is apparently an ongoing issue, I think I'll be avoiding this store for a while. They have an outdoor market stand with beautiful, colorful vegetables on display (and pretty flowers, too), and it's always caught my eye. So I finally visited here the other day when I was walking about the 'hood. There are quite a few positive features about this place, but some negatives, too. Hence the average, 3-star rating. First the positives: they have a decent selection of fresh, organic produce. The place is clean and well stocked. Inside, they have packaged meals and slices of cakes, and quite a few cheeses. There are shelves in the back containing most pantry staples, so in a pinch, you could probably find the basics here - and more. And the items that were on "special" or sale had prices comparable to my No Frills, so that was good to see. The downside: those items that were not on sale were exorbitantly priced. I'd say on average, prices are higher than at Urban Fare. Perhaps on a par with Whole Foods. And the set-up at the cash was a cluster**** when I was there, with three of us customers at the counter and the cashier trying to juggle us all simultaneously (which was really odd). Whatever system they have for ringing out, it wasn't working when I was there. Luckily, none of us was impatient or had anger management issues (with another group, it could've turned out much differently. We three all kinda looked at each other and just shrugged our shoulders). I guess if I lived nearby, I'd pop in here occasionally to see what produce was on sale, but due to the prices, this wouldn't be my go-to place for regular shopping.
