You can pick your base, protein, and lastly two sides. We sampled the okra, daal , and Afghan rice- all were delicious! Ordered : Chicken koobideh with daal and fries - delicious seasoned tender chicken atop fragrant Afghan rice. The fries were nice and crisp and drizzled with some of their specialty sauces and the daal, like a soup, was perfecto! Chicken koobideh atop Greek salad without feta. Knowing that I had a slight intolerance to dairy, they offered me a sample of all their sauces. Love!! I dipped my salad and chicken into all of them- garlic, spicy, green. For my sides - daal which they put into a bowl for me so as to not spill into my other items ( very thoughtful!) and eggplant. At the time they were sold out of the popular dish, I was disappointed and I think they couldn't help but notice the expression on my face..... but, as I was trying to figure out my other side, a shipment of eggplant came in! And they made it fresh for me! Sliced, cooked eggplant topped with a homemade tomato sauce. It came in 3 pieces and each piece is tender, juicy and flavorful and the spices makes the natural taste of goat not overwhelming. I have a pretty low spice tolerance, and the mild spice is perfectly fine. The other highlight are the Paratha and Halwa. I learned from my friends that even in a foodie city like Houston, its pretty hard to find places that serve good Halwa. Its sweetness offers a nice break from all the savory meats and paratha. The staff here are all very nice and made sure our napkin stack and water is always topped off and the restaurant overall is very clean. I placed the order well in advance and was assured by the manager that it would be ready for pickup at 5:00 PM. We even called while on the way to confirm everything was on schedule. When we arrived, we were kept waiting for 30 minutes. Unfortunately, the problems didn't end there. As soon as we got home, the restaurant called to tell us they had given us someone else's order. Since exchanging it would have taken another hour, they offered to deliver our food instead. By the time it arrived, everything was cold. The naan was cold, the meat was dry, and the top layer of the pilau looked like it had been sitting uncovered for quite some time. I understand that mistakes happen, but this wasn't a small error--it completely spoiled a birthday dinner for family and friends. Good food is only part of the experience; reliability and quality matter just as much, especially on a large order. Sadly, after this experience, I won't be ordering from Mai Colachi again.
