My girlfriend and I were looking for something a bit different in the area and decided to have our first try on Persian food at Kasra. I must say I have to echo her review, as we were blown away by the flavors. The restaurant was packed, and the decor was fancy but comfortable. One look at the interior and clientele already convinced me this place would be authentic. We opted to try 2 different combos, the Kasra and seafood combo, so we could share and try a bit of everything. It's hard to pick a favorite, all the proteins were flavorful and tender. The rice was a whole talking point just by itself. I often get bored with plain old white rice, so I'm glad Kasra seasons their rice well. The portions were very generous as well, they left me full after cleaning up that whole plate. I went to KASRA over the weekend with some friends from out of town. They loved the authentic Persian food and wonderful service. I had never tried Persian food previously, and after seeing so many good reviews about Kasra, I decided to try them out recently for a dinner for two. It's located in a large shopping center on Westheimer & Gessner, and despite the large number of parking spots, it was super packed and took a while for us to find parking on a Saturday evening. The restaurant is well-decorated, and the service was great. There were so many options to choose from on their menu, and we went with the Seafood Combo which came with the Salmon Kabob & Shrimp Kabob, and the Kasra Combo with Beef Chenjeh & Chicken Barb. The dinner also came with a huge complimentary pita and herb salad (ask for the salad dressing. It's amazing!). Both portions were huge and extremely delicious. This is an excellent Persian restaurant in Houston area with some very unique Persian dishes I haven't seen in Persian restaurants in other cities. The Taftoon bread was warm and soft and was very good with the hummus, and eggplant dips. After spontaneously eating at the Rice Village location a few weeks ago, I made my way to the original Kasra for the first time since my review 16 years ago. We split the kubideh combo, which comes with a ground beef and ground chicken kabob. The portion was so substantial, we got three meals out of it. We also upgraded the rice to the shirin rice, which has orange zest, barberries, and almonds. The kabobs were fantastic, but let me say, that rice was incredible. It's so fragrant and flavorful. My only grievance is that I wish they have you more than one cube of feta per person on the plate with herbs and radishes. The bread is always hot, soft, and puffy. This review pains me greatly. I love Kasra and been frequenting the Westchase location for lunch for over twenty years. Like many other places I "love", I don't get in as often as I used to back when I was gainfully employed. But I still get in there 4 or 5 times a year. In fact, I still frequently choose it for my birthday lunches with the family and it was that occasion that found all six of us there last Sunday. When I would go for lunch back in the day, I managed to try many different dishes. I've had Chicken Barg, Beef Barg, Lamb Shank, Salmon, Jujeh, (Cornish hen), various stews, and a few other things for sure. My favorite though is the Kubideh Combo, a skewer each of seasoned ground chicken and ground beef. It's served with rice and a half of a charred tomato. I always add a skewer of grilled vegetables. And since I get in so infrequently these days, I always order that and did so Sunday. It was great and I'll definitely get it again the next time I'm there. But I'll be eating alone because it was the only successful dish that came to the table that day. Working clockwise around the table: Lamb and Beef Kubideh - Dry as a bone; way overdone. Shrimp Skewer - Overdone and dry. Almost crispy. Jujeh Kabob - My aunt didn't complain but tried to give most of it away around the table. Given the other dishes, she was successful but no one asked for more. Plant based Kabob and Vegetarian Plate. He liked everything but the kabob and it was left uneaten. It looked dry and overdone also. And finally, my mom's Chicken Kabob. This dish consists of boneless thighs, folded into a ball and skewered. She took one bite and put a big chunk on my plate and said "Try this". It was very undercooked. It wasn't just juicy - it had that chewy raw texture that makes it literally "hard to swallow". I grabbed the manager who had stopped by the table earlier and she very gracefully and apologetically took it back to correct. Our waiter brought it back to the table and asked her to cut one to make sure it was done and it was still way undercooked. So back it went. When he brought it back, he said he had each thigh cut in half and grilled again. And it was finally done. Needless to say, lunch wasn't a hit. To reiterate, mine was great, The balance were a strange combination of underdone/overdone. Hopefully, it was a case of an understaffed or new staff in the kitchen and they'll quickly get it sorted. BUT, in about a year, if you see a dapper older gentleman quietly enjoying a Kubideh Combo all alone, stop by the table and wish me a Happy Birthday! Lastly, a shout out to our waiter Jimmy. I love Kazra!! I visit TX from CA and always need to eat at Kazra. The service is fast! Food is bomb and authentic and the restaurant is lively. The bathrooms are so beautiful! However, we were charged for it at the end. I understand the charge itself, but no one at the table had ordered it; they just set it on the table. After a 25min wait, we were seated at a table between two very large parties; it was uncomfortable and there was no room. We said we were not uncomfortable and were told this was the only table. The food here is so good, I'm glad I convinced my friends to come here. We came in on a Friday afternoon and it wasn't too busy. Our waitress was so sweet, friendly, and so helpful with giving suggestions. The restaurant itself is HUGE and there is plenty of seating every where. We were given complimentary pita and well as some fresh vegetables and cheese to start off with. We also ordered a small hummus which was so smooth, creamy and garlicky. It paired so well with the crispy, yet fluffy pita. For entrees we got the chenjeh prepared medium well and the Kubideh Combo. The chenjeh platter doesn't look like much but the meat was tender, and slightly peppery. The rice was flavorful and the grilled tomatoes provided a refreshing side to the dish. The Kubideh Combo came with a beef kebab and a chicken kebab. We also asked to substitute some of the rice with a persian salad. The beef kebab tasted like a beef meatball. The chicken kebab was much more flavorful and tender. The persian salad was super refreshing and went well with the kebabs. For a table of six, we ordered: Appetizer Sampler: Hummus (4.5/5), Kashke Bademjan (4/5), Mast Khiar (4/5). I personally liked the Mast Khiar the most, and some of my table liked the Kashke Bademjan the most. The hummus was unanimously enjoyed. Family Platter for Six (4.5/5): While the highlight of the platter is definitely the filet mignon, the rest of the meats were fork-seperable tender. I didn't think the rice was anything special but the chicken and beef kubideh were delicious. I wish it came with lamb as well, but what we got was plenty. Portions were huge and I believe our order (with the appetizers) could've easily fed eight people. Their Turkish tea was also very good, but the coffee was nothing special. I tried the Beef Barj and also sampled the Beef Koobideh. Both dishes were delicious, but I especially enjoyed the Barj for its satisfying texture, as it wasn't made from minced meat. The rice was perfectly seasoned, and the portion sizes were generous. Plus, they offer refills on tea, which is a nice touch. We had been here before and this last time we went it was a bit underwhelming. The friendliness of the service was , as usual, very nice but the food I must say it was not as best as other times. The kofta was overcooked (to my liking), since its ground beef it felt tough to the bite, however the flavor was still great. The eggplant dip was cold , which was supposed to be warm, so that took me off the expectancy I had since i had eaten it there before. My experience with the shank was "meh". It was very juicy and tender but it was a very small portion compared to other times we have been here. Went on a Saturday evening and it was super busy. After trying the food I'm not surprised as to why. They gave us some taftoon bread to start and we ordered the kashke bademjan for an appetizer. We also got the kasra combo with beef chenjeh and chicken baarg, as well as a lamb kubideh. The taftoon bread with a bite of feta, radish, and mint is so delightful. The bread came out warm and was perfect for the rainy/chilly day. (7/10) We also dipped the bread in the kashke bademjan which made it even better. The kashke bademjan was the perfect blend of creamy, savory, and a slight hint of sweetness from the grilled onions. If you are fan of egg plant dip I would definitely recommend this dish as it is an elevated version. I am glad we followed this recommendation from our server Ruben! (8/10) The kashra combo came with grilled vegetables and rice on the side and was exactly what I was looking for. The vegetables and chicken were grilled perfectly and the chicken was extremely juicy and tender despite being on the grill. The beef chenjeh was also very flavorful and tender and the lamb kubideh was the perfect addition to the meal. (9/10) Overall I really enjoyed my experience at Kasra. The ambiance is classy but still casual and friendly. The service was great and helpful with the menu and the parking lot is huge. We visit Kasra every time we are in Houston. This is the only restaurant I have ever found that offers a plant-based kabob and it's amazing. Highly recommend to all vegetarians! When you sit down they bring out taftoon and a variety of herbs, cheese, and radish. Very delicious. Food and people are amazing here. Cousins took us out to try this wonderful food. I always enjoyed Irani cuisine with my beloved---but now, this place is quite an experience. Food was delicious. We ordered the family platter and it was so much food. I do want to suggest different dipping sauces to be included with the meats because it can be a dry experience. Thankfully I asked the waitress and she told me I had to purchase the dips....I think they should be included .The service was not the greatest. Really affordable Persian food that are large portions too. Their chicken kebab was my favorite overall. I got it in the chicken sultani. The meat was juicy and flavorful. I also tried the beef kubideh, zereshk polo with chicken, hummus, mirza bademjan, and tah digh. Avoid the tah digh (crispy rice), it wasn't good at all. The zereshk polo with chicken was half of a chicken and the rice that came with it is more sweet with the cranberry. The mirza bademian was mild in flavor and tastes a bit more like tomato.
