I stayed here since it was the sponsored hotel for a local bicycle event. I don't really buy into the whole push for green energy but since it was so close to the bike shop and seemed like a decent price, I decided I could probably endure some hippy smug for convenience's sake. This is definitely a converted apartment complex that's been remodeled and re-purposed as a hotel. I was in a one-bedroom suite upstairs on the side of the hotel facing Highland Mall. I was relatively close to the next door strip joint but I didn't notice the noise pollution others have complained about. The furniture and decor are definitely outdated: 17" TVs, dark wood living room and bedroom furniture with faux gold accents, formica kitchen counter tops, and the stove and fridge were definitely 80s era. The mattress was quite old and too firm, but not uncomfortable enough to leave me sleepless or sore. Nothing in the room was new, but I found the room and facilities to be in good repair and clean. To make up for the inadequate light provided by the CFL bulbs in every light fixture, they attempted to brighten the room with extra lamps but this wasn't really a good substitute for good old fashioned light bulbs. At one point during the evening I had every light in the bedroom and bathroom on and still had trouble reading. Green is ok to a point, but not at the sacrifice of function... I stayed long enough to enjoy the complimentary happy hour and breakfast. Both were actually very nice. The happy hour snacks included cheese, crackers, chips, salsa/dips, pizza bagels, and veggies. Breakfast consisted of oatmeal, fruits, veggies, cereal, eggs, turkey sausage, vegetarian "sausage" patties, pancakes, biscuits, gravy, and several beverage choices. I didn't get to experience the pool or hot tub since those are sort of out of season for the time I was there. They do have free wifi which was decently fast. I think I would probably stay here again, but only for its proximity to the annual bike rally. If I were going to Austin for any other reason I would probably choose a mainstream hotel. Those who care about energy efficiency and green living, might find it to be a good value. I prefer comfort. It was a very "meh" experience. read more

I want to start out with saying the staff and cleaners were amazing. I went half in with a roommate and got a 2 bedroom suite. The location of these are sort of close to downtown, you have a good selection of where to eat from what's around Habitat. I averaged a $40 Uber to and from for four days riding to 6th, and Rainey Street. Happy hour at habitat was from 1700-1900 and you get three free drinks. They had Chardonnay, two other wines one was red, bud light, dos XX, and a local beer. I didn't get one hot shower while I was here, I'm not sure what was up with the outdated showers but I couldn't get it to work even with asking how to use it from staff. I didn't have a bad time here but it would have been way cheaper staying in a hostel vs the amount we paid for four nights here. I spent a few days debating whether or not I should give this place four stars, but in the end I chose three because I'm not sure if I will return. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and if you are looking for a unique experience, this is a reasonably priced hotel in the Austin area. Keep in mind it is north of town and not that close to the attractions, but it's not so far that it's an inconvenience. PROS: The breakfast was wonderful. I enjoyed the variety of food and it was as described on the website. The breakfast staff was very friendly! I loved seeing their smiling faces. The rooms are as described on the website. Yes, it is an older property, and yes, the furniture is a bit old, but it is in NO way dirty. Everything was clean and well maintained. They have a saltwater pool, and it was very refreshing. It's a bit small, but the area around the pool is beautiful and they have lots of very comfortable seating. I very much appreciated the shampoo and soap dispensers in the shower/tub. It's convenient and I wish all hotels would have dispensers like they have at Habitat Suites. The coffee in the rooms was great! Much better than other hotels. The beds were fine and I loved the fact that we had lots of pillows. We only went to happy hour one night. It was okay. Free beer & wine is always good :) CONS: If you are older, physically disabled, or a large person, you may want to rethink staying on the 2nd floor. The steps are steep, and the wood that holds the stairs together is falling apart. I would try to grab on to the railing, and it was swaying back and forth. When I got upstairs, the wood by the room was moving, which made me extremely uncomfortable. It's not sturdy, and it definitely needs to be addressed. I would not consider staying here again on the 2nd floor unless and until they fix it. Very dangerous, in my opinion. The front desk staff was a bit pretentious when we checked in. They were friendly, but a bit stuffy for my taste, and I felt they were staring at us and silently judging us when we walked by. I love people who have manners, but this place is in no way a five star fancy hotel, so there is no need to act like we're at the Ritz. We're definitely NOT. Not even close. Thankfully, the man who checked us out was not as pretentious, but was very friendly and relaxed. He fit in better with the environment than the man and two women who checked us in. Since the property is a bit older, there are a few minor annoyances with the plumbing. The toilet was hard to flush and the shower knobs were difficult to maneuver. Also, the soap dispenser by the bathroom sink was not working well. I'm all for "green" products, but sometimes the packaging fails to work and that was a bit of an annoyance. Next time I would bring my own soap, I think. It's a decent place if you need a suite that has 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, and a living area for all to use, (which we did), but if not I would say go to a regular hotel. I would give this hotel a 5-star review if it were listed as a 2-star hotel, but I feel its 3-star rating is misleading. It's firmly a 2-star hotel in terms of the amenities (few provided toiletries), renovations (motel-style furnishings, a big burn mark in the rug, small TVs), and luxury (cheap-feeling linens). However, the room was clean and spacious, the outside landscaping is restful and immaculate, the grounds were quiet, there was plenty of parking most of the time, and the free hotel breakfast is really awesome (for a free hotel breakfast). As long as you think of this as a 2-star joint, you should be quite happy here. And the price is certainly right. read more

Lives up to their name Hospitality!!! From the early check in to the easy check out..Thank you for a great four day stay. We were in Austin for my nieces graduation and we couldn't have been more comfortable. My daughter stayed with on the sofa bed and house keeping was more than happy to accommodate the extra blankets and towels. We did not get to try there breakfast buffet because we never woke up early enough. Although, plenty of coffee for our coffee pot and a nice full kitchenette to keep things cool or warm thing up. The suites are surrounded by beautiful foliage both ornamental and edible herbs and fruit trees... I recommend a nice little walk around the grounds, it's short but sweet. read more

I wish I checked yelp before I stayed here. For some really random reason yahoo gave it rave reviews. I want to give it only one star, but my husband said the breakfast warrants two stars. The positive: Breakfast was good and they offered a hot meal. It was really cheap and quiet. The front desk was really nice and helpful. The negative: The grounds were a mess and it looked very unkept. The room was clean, but smelled musty, and the furniture was at least 20 years old, or looked like it. The neighborhood was very industrial and not that nice. It is next door to a large strip club. The pool was dingy. Maybe I had a different expectation going in, but I thought it would be a cute B&B outside of town. This it is not. If you are on a really tight budget and you are with a large family this place would be good for you, but if you are looking for any sort of ambiance this is not the place for you. read more

I was really looking forward to staying at his hotel. I loved the idea of an Eco friendly hotel. The grounds and clubhouse were very nice and the organic breakfast was fab. The room however left something to be desired. Upon first glance it was nice and tidy with older furnishings. The problem arose when my 2 year old and 9 month old began playing on the floor. Within 30 minutes their legs were black. I can only assume that the carpets hadn't been properly vacuumed in quite some time. Now I consider myself quite crunchy. I cloth diaper, repurpose or recycle items, and make my own homemade cleaning products. One thing I won't stop doing is vacuuming my carpets. No matter how much energy it may conserve to not do so. It was disconcerting to see my babies legs all black and the bottoms of our feet black from walking on the carpets. We stayed in Austin two nights but checked out and moved to a different hotel our second night there. I'd love to give the hotel a second chance if this issue was taken care of. read more

Got in around 5PM with my wife and Mother in Law after they flew in. The gentlemen at the front desk was nice, checked us in quickly. He had a great intuition that we had been on a plane all day and made a point to offer us the complimentary beverage service they run from 5-7!PM! Being able to have a FREE beer and sit down and unwind with the family was awesome! Great service all around. The rooms are nice. A little old fashioned, but cool. Truly enjoyed our 4-day stay here. Great value: complimentary breakfast and happy hour included. We liked the lush landscaping and every room has its own outdoor entry so you don't have to go through the lobby; very private. There's a cute little garden court yard/pool area that guests were enjoying. It is a bit out of town, but for us it was fine since we had a rental car and our son lives nearby. Our 2nd floor room was quite ample (no elevator). Had a living room and a full kitchen which we didn't use at all. The bathroom does need updating, but it was clean. This hotel has such potential, but falls short on a crucial element: comfortable beds! The suite itself is dated but clean and thoughtfully appointed. The hotel lobby is beautiful and the staff is very professional and personable. However, both the king-sized bed in the bedroom and the pull-out mattress in the living room were old and quite uncomfortable. The king mattress was rock hard and squeaky. The pull-out had various springs pushing out. I did ask the front desk staff to address these issues- and they tried. They flipped over the king mattress and swapped-out the pull-out. But net-net, it was still uncomfortable on the third night, and we switched hotels. I'm not the pickiest one to choose where i sleep, but i definitely had an enjoyable experience at this hotel. I didn't pay for anything as I was on a company trip, but I sure did like my stay. Let me just start off by saying, i felt the real southern hospitality while staying at this hotel. Breakfast was included which is the bomb.com, best ever as most of the foods is cooked in a kitchen. I had eggs, bacon, waffles, fruit, french toast all that good stuff and there is even a hospitality hour between the hours of 5-7 which is basically a happy hour. The limit is three drinks, but all of them being free how can you beat that. Location is important when I travel, but being on a business trip tourism wasn't a priority. It seemed like a good place and for a kick is located next to a stripper bar called sugars. lul. The rooms are very welcoming. I had a suite with a kitchen, fridge, living room and king size bed. Everything seemed great. It isn't getting 5 stars due to the location but I would recommend this place. read more

We loved Habitat Suites! My SO and I visited Austin in January and chose to stay at Habitat Suites because we got an awesome deal through Expedia. There were so many mixed reviews on Yelp, Expedia and other travel websites, but we decided to take a chance anyways. I can tell you - We were NOT disappointed in our choice! We stayed in a one-bedroom suite while we were here. It was so comfortable and cozy! When we walked in, there was a small living room area and a full kitchen. Everything was very clean. The bedroom had a king sized bed which was so comfortable. The bathroom was clean (which is always important!), even though it was rather small. The only downfall about staying here was we didn't get a chance to check out the restaurant, which we can't blame on anyone but ourselves of course. When we return to Austin this summer, we are hoping to be able to stay here again. read more

I really would like to write a great review for this place. I was really excited to stay at this hotel and was looking forward to staying in an eco friendly hotel. Unfortunately, I really disliked staying here. The bed was one of the most uncomfortable beds I have ever slept on in a hotel in the US. The walls were super thin so I could hear plumbing sounds all night long and the sounds of my neighbors when they woke up in the middle of the night. The hotel was also not very clean. There was significant mold growing in the bathroom. And the room needed some updating and upkeep--the wallpaper was peeling off in many place. The lights in the hotel were very dim which made it a very dingy and uncomfortable experience. They also couldn't accomodate having a key available for my husband when he arrived late at night several days after I arrived. Instead he had to bang on the door and wake me (and probably all the neighbors up because the walls were so thin) when he arrived. It is also in a strange location with very little around it. There were some good things about the hotel. The staff was very friendly. The breakfast was nice, especially for a vegetarian. There was lots of nice plants and greenery I wouldn't stay here again and would never recommend this hotel. read more

Stayed for 6 days, and had a great experience. The rates are quite low, compared to what they used to charge sometime ago. The happy hour was quite well attended and the bartender, even though busy, managed to served everybody well, even to clear tables and keep everything tide. Breakfast, have to make my point clear, I was there 15 minuted before closing, didn't have all that was supposed to have, but the eggs were very tasty, has cereals, yogurts, bread, etc. All that makes your breakfast a good start of your day. The rooms are large, well distributed, with full kitchen, two TVs, large and very comfortable bed. Lots of pillows will help you dream of angels. The only reason for not getting a fifth start is the my room was next to Sugars and got a bit noisy on night. read more

The room is large, likely because the inn a renovated apartment complex. The employees are very nice and accommodating. Loved talking to Don during evening reception. He may be my fav part of my stay!! Rooms are comfy and clean but could use an update. Bathroom has peeling paper, tub looks dirty but is just stained., fridge is really old. The morning food is great though. Healthy and delicious. The direct Tv is spotty and went out multiple times while I was watching a movie. Boo. My big issue is there is a club or something close to the side Im on that is SO LOUD it's nearly impossible to sleep. I needed to download a white noise app to use and wear ear plugs. Thank goodness I remembered them! Even with that I was still awake at almost midnight, when I have to get up at 6 for work, because of the noise. Really, really frustrating. We had 2 rooms reserved at this hotel. At check in, housekeeping had some work to do on both rooms. Room #1- hair on the sink, used towel on the counter, multiple hairs in bed. Room #2- large yellow stain in sheets, blood on edge of bed, blood on the side of the bed!! The guests should've talked to the front desk right then and there but are traveling on business so decided to leave and get another hotel room. The next day we tried to get our money back. Since we booked through a 3rd party, we tried to get it resolved through them. The manager, Heidi, didn't believe us and after "investigating" she said they would not reimburse for anything, at all and without any type of explanation. After that we called the hotel directly and sent an email with pictures to prove the experience. After not hearing for 24 hours, I had to call again to follow up. Heidi, basically accused the guests of lying and said the pictures were not taken at that hotel. Why would they have any reason to lie? I can understand having pride in your hotel but if someone reports and has proof; at some point you have to take ownership and apologize. She did none of this and wouldn't even reimburse for the second night that they clearly weren't there. She said it was because of a 2 night minimum rule. Well every rule has exceptions especially in customer service. Be aware of this place and make sure that you don't have any type of complaint; they will in so many words call you a liar! read more

I picked this hotel so we could support a small, environmentally friendly business rather than going with the consistently good Marriott hotels. It was simply a mistake to stay here and we will not be back. We also do not recommend this hotel. Observations: grounds need to be maintained. Organic gardening is more than planting rosemary bushes. Green cleaning doesn't mean small bugs are in the bathroom. Green chic means reusing in a fabulous manner, not furnishing old rooms with garage sale finds. The tiles are marked or chipped and the wall paper is coming off in the bathroom. The shower water also doesn't get hot. The bed was also very uncomfortable leaving us sore the next day. We were in the section of the hotel closest to Sugar's, a gentleman's club. It does get noisy closer to 12am-2am, so if you have kids or want some quiet ask for a room on the other side of the club. Service: neither the front desk staff nor the breakfast workers were friendly. We missed the happy breakfast ladies at the Marriott. Breakfast: we thought that breakfast may have saved the experience as it did for other travelers. Unfortunately it did not. While the selection is varied, the food is not very good or was watery. There are so many farmers markets that this hotel could buy from that frozen veggies in water need not be served as a vegan breakfast item. Breakfast was a failure and we went to the nearby Cinnamons bakery for our coffee and morning meal. This is NOT a boutique, green hotel. Very nice staff! Great place that resembles an old style Residence Inn. but with a personal touch. Our room was fantastic. One of the nicest features would be the door to the bedroom that separates the living room. Clean and nicely appointed, although, probably an older renovation with some very minor aging issues here and there. The only negative would be the old style small tv's., and could use a few more electrical outlets. Not a lot withing walking distance, but would stay here again for sure! We were a family of three: two adults and a 10-month old baby who needed accommodation for a week-long trip to Austin. The pros with Habitat Suites for our family were that the adults could go about their lives when the baby was taking a nap because we could just shut the bedroom door. The rooms, furniture and fixtures are a bit dated but comfortable and clean. I love the kitchenette because we were there for a longer trip and sometimes it gets exhausting to eat every meal at a restaurant! The location in Austin is good, quite central so its easy to get places but without being in the middle of the rush hour chaos. I found the staff to be quite personable and our overall stay was great! The cons were that the free breakfast was terrible. The buffet is vegetarian, which is fine, and the cooks will make you one dish to order, like eggs or a breakfast taco or breakfast bowl. These were usually tex-mex but they tasted terrible! Their scrambled eggs were completely tasteless and their hash browns were awful. Nothing was seasoned. I recommend skipping the free breakfast. The hot breakfast part of the buffet seemed to consist of only biscuits and gravy. The cooks are also really awkward and seemed to like making the diners squirm by loudly yelling at them. Very odd. I would definitely stay here again, but next time I would budget for eating breakfast elsewhere! read more

We checked in on 9/20/17. Hoping for a relaxing trip to Austin. It was good until we got our room. Presentation was perfect. BUT the beds are hard as rock and the carpet smelled like mildew. I had an important test that next morning and needed to study but the so called free WiFi was horrible. Absolutely no reception. We had no hot water in the room PERIOD, and no one ever came to check it out. Then the heat wasn't heating up the room, and on top of all of that, we got put out at 3:00 am in the morning b/c their management said we had gotten a complaint. She gave us one warning, but she called the police on us right after. I will NEVER stay at any of your locations again, and b/c I work for the State of Texas and I handle travel, I have taken Habitat Suites off of our list. I would never want anyone to go thru what we went thru, and the upper management, Mr. Donald Walls was not any help either. Of course he sided with his employee who was very rude. And my sister has also taken them off their list at Dell Computer. The landscaping is horrible and the up-keeping of the facility has gone way down. It was a very messed up experience, and it ruined my daughter's birthday as well. So yeah, they'll never have to worry about us again, and I have posted on all of my social media accounts as well. Over half a million people has will be viewing my post. I also have a parent who is filing charges on the night manager for knocking her daughter's phone out of her hand b/c she was recording her talking to them like she was crazy. Sad, but at the end of the day, I was always told that Best Lessons Are Bought Lessons. NEVER AGAIN!!! And on top of that when I checked in I told the lady that I was having a sleepover for my daughter and she told me that she was putting us in the back so we wouldn't disturb anyone, and then we were told that we wasn't supposed to have any parties at their location. REALLY??? But she KNEW what we were planning to do. When I asked her for my money back, she told me I was not getting a damn thing back, but of course I had to go over her head, but that wasn't much help either. They should really just shut down b/c the customer service from the front desk was good, but the management is just flat out disrespectful. Habitat Suites is an environmentally safe place for me to stay! As a person with environmental illness, it is almost impossible to find a hotel that won't worsen my medical condition due to the chemicals in cleaners, detergents, etc.. I cannot say how much it meant to hit the sheets and not break out in hives. The bed was so comfy that I slept the best I had in months! I even got to use the pool which has salt water instead of chlorine. I was in heaven! My over all experience exceeded my standards which is very rare indeed! HS is a safe haven for me that I am so happy I discovered. Maybe it will be for other people with mild chemical sensitivity. The staff are very accommodating and the hotel itself is generous. Having stayed at the hotel once before I knew what to expect when arriving. All of the staff are wonderful and so very helpful. The happy hour is great and words can't possibly describe how good the breakfast is. I mean who's ever heard of a hotel doing vegan and vegetarian breakfast? It was simply divine. Despite all of the usual things that make hotels memorable the Habitat staff went above and beyond on this trip. Mid way through the trip I got sick. . . . really sick. My boyfriend and I ate some bad food (at a restaurant not the hotel) and I came down with a nasty case of food poisoning. He frantically went to the staff and asked where the nearest Walgreen's or CVS would be so he could get me some medicine. The staff gave him directions and even tracked down some Sprite for me sip on. They extended our stay an extra day and even extended the discounted price we had originally received. Later that same afternoon when a staff member saw my boyfriend walking around the grounds the asked how I was feeling and asked if there was anything else they could do to help. Words can not describe how grateful I am to the staff for making our stay tolerable. Had it not been for their kindness and desire to go above and beyond what is asked I am sure our trip would have been a disaster. Thank goodness for the wonderful staff at Habitat Suites! read more

Tried this hotel as the price was right and the "green" description was attractive. Don't you just love it when things exceed your expectations!?! Reading some of the reviews made me nervous but husband and I have a deal when traveling that if a hotel is too funky we won't stay. When we walked in we knew we were staying. And we did for 4 days. From Cameron at the front desk to Maudie in the breakfast room every employee we encountered was friendly, professional and extremely helpful. The common areas were clean, attractive and inviting. Our suite was lovely. The thing that really struck me was there were no smells. No chemical cleaning smells, no masking odors. Nothing. Just a fresh clean living room, bedroom with kitchenette and bathroom. My husband and I were very busy while in Austin and loved coming back to Habitat Suites, sitting in the living room and chatting and unwinding from the day. A couple of times we joked (sort of) how we could just live here. It was truly a home away from home for us. Appreciated the unique aspects and enjoyed the refreshing "unchain" feel to the hotel. read more

I was sincerely impressed with this hotel. My whole experience was amazing and I am so glad I found it. When I came in from the road I was really hoping for a smooth check-in because I was exhausted. Glenda was wonderful! She had my room keys ready in no time and then she answered a few questions I had about Austin. The whole staff was great during my stay. It means so much to know they will go over and above to make me feel as comfortable as possible. The natural setting of this hotel was very relaxing and I couldn't have been more happy with my room and the amount of space there was. It was also clean, which is a huge deal to me. I debated whether to go down for breakfast in the morning, but I totally made the right call. I had fresh scrambled eggs, veg sausage (they had reg sausage as well), and a glass of organic soy milk. I made sure to make it to breakfast every day of my stay because it really was excellent. This was a unique experience and I will certainly be back whenever I make it to Austin. Habitat Suites is a lovely place to stay, with beautiful grounds and a convenient location. Each suite is a small apartment with decent living space, full kitchen, separate bedroom, and clean bathroom. The small appliances in the kitchen are new-ish, while the large appliances are old, but they are all clean, well-maintained, and in good working order. I brought my own towels because I didn't want to stain theirs with my hair dye, so I can't really speak to them, but the linens on the bed were nice and crisp and clean. Everything was clean, which is a big statement coming from me. The breakfasts were delicious, and the evening snacks were good. Be aware, there are no elevators, so don't bring anything you can't haul up a flight of stairs if you're on the second floor. There is convenient CapMetro station at the other end of the block, with both the commuter rail line and bus routes straight to UT and downtown. I was in town in late February for a show at the Paramount and to see the museums at UT, so I walked to and from the station several times. The only problem I had during my stay was that the shower needed a new mixing valve, but I explained that before I left, and I'm sure it's been fixed by now. This is literally the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. The parking lot is very, very dark. It looks like an old apartment COMPLEX THAT was converted into a hotel. After I took a shower I walked straight to my bed and my feet were black from the dirty floor. There were stain all over the curtains in my room (not sure how that is possible). Even the doors and walls had built up dirt. The furniture is super old and not stable, and bed is hard as a rock. There are plenty of nicer hotels to stay at. Not a nice area of town either. I am honestly shocked that the reviews were as good as they are. There are much better hotels at this price point. Save your money, do not stay here!! read more

When traveling to Austin on business, I've found a reasonable priced, eco-friendly and convenient hotel option: Habitat Suites. The facility appears to have been a former apartment complex or assisted care facility but has been converted to an outstanding suites hotel. They are very vocal about their desire to recycle and reduce their impact on the environment ... befitting the Austin ethos, I suppose. The staff was truly outstanding from check-in to check-out ... the room itself was EXTREMELY spacious, clean and comfortable and had a full kitchen equipped with dishware ... facility WiFi was solid ... and they have the best complimentary breakfast I've seen at a non-luxury hotel. The apartment-sized suite and full kitchen were outstanding draws for me as it allowed me to spread out and be truly comfortable. This would be a big draw for me if I were spending several nights in town for business. There were some negatives ... the television were small tube tvs and the living room television was placed in a cabinet near the floor making viewing nearly impossible. The bed, while not the most comfortable, did have ample pillows. The shower/toilet combo had recently been remodeled and it was impossible to close the door without it hitting the toilet bowl; the tradeoff was a large shower and extra space in the bathroom. Overall, while the hotel is in a so-so neighborhood near a nearly-shuttered mall I think that the serene environment coupled with easy highway access makes Habitat Suites an ideal business or extended stay option for travel to Austin. read more
