I read a bunch of negative reviews of this place - not sure about anyone else but Lisa did awesome!! A few years ago, my mostly straight hair turned into mostly curly hair. Since then I've been trying to figure out how to handle shortish hair that curls after one drop of rain. I went to Habitude with high hopes. The atmosphere is clean, not overly noisy or busy, and the people are friendly, offering coffee/tea/water. I sat down to my appointment with Naomi, told her what I wanted, and she immediately knew just what to do. I got a really nice neck/shoulder/scalp massage, a good shampoo/conditioning, and then she did the cut. Instead of being timid about cutting off a good amount of hair (I got rid of a good 6 inches, ending in a shoulder length bob), she went right at it - because she knew what she was doing. The cut ended up SO nice! I haven't had such a nice haircut in a very long time, so this was such a treat. I will definitely be going back to her - and at $35, she's a steal! One additional thing: I love stylists who don't try and do smalltalk the whole time. Naomi fit the bill while still being friendly and personable. She also didn't try to get me to buy a bunch of products, but did let me know what she used and why. Total win! read more

I treated myself to a spa day at Habitude recently. It's an extravagance for me, and the first time I've done this. Previously I'd only been to Habitude for haircuts, but I'm not a fan of their tiered pricing system by stylist experience level, and go elsewhere now. That's another review altogether... My package consisted of a hot rocks massage, facial, and pedicure, and I ended up spending approximately 4 hours there. I guess I'll start at the begininng. If you read any of my reviews, you'll notice that the initial greeting I get in an establishment is very important to me and is something I weigh heavily in my reviews. In this case, the woman was friendly and polite, and greeted me within a few minutes of my arrival. However, she didn't seem to know how to use the check-in equipment and was very unclear about where I should go. She didn't let me know which service I would be getting first or give me a plan for my visit. Not really a big deal, but something for Habitude to consider incorporating. The changing room is clean, comfortable, and well-equipped. There are lockers, towels, robes, and flip flops. An assortment of Aveda products are available for guests in both the bathroom and shower areas. The waiting area is also comfortable, if not a bit small. I arrived mid-day on a Monday and it was not too busy, but I imagine it can get cramped on the weekend. Healthy snacks, like nuts and dried fruits were available, as well as water and tea. I was excited to use the sauna, but I never knew how long I would be waiting between services so I was reluctant. I did manage to go in once, for about 10 minutes, and I didn't break a sweat, indicating it was not hot enough, in my opinion. I'd never had a hot rocks massage. My masseuse was friendly and warm. The massage itself was relaxing and definitely more on the Swedish side. No deep tissue here. I found the frequent application and removal of hot rocks disturbing to the flow of the massage and I don't think I would use them again. My facial was effective and my skin was very soft and looked great afterwards. It wasn't exactly rushed, but she used so many different products that it didn't feel very relaxing. But hey, like I said, my skin felt wonderful afterwards so I'm not complaining. I'm really conflicted about my pedicure. On the one hand, it looked good. On the other hand, the experience was no better than a place that does it for half the price and has more comfortable chairs. And while the technician was very nice, she shared some disturbing personal information with me, which made the whole experience rather awkward. Bottom line, I loved being able to slow down and enjoy 4+ hours of pampering. The services and ambiance were average though, and for the price (around $300 before the tip), it's not something I'll do on a regular basis. Also, be aware that there are lots of attempts at upselling so be ready to pay more than originally expected or find creative ways to repeated say no. read more

This review is for the spa only....the bf and I hit up Habitude for some Valentine's Day relaxation. I did a ton of research. I wanted a place where it was a true spa with a sauna or a steam room, and I wanted it to be truly unisex (not just a spa for women where the men feel like an afterthought or outright uncomfortable). I also didn't want to have to sell a kidney because it was so expensive. This search led me to Habitude in Ballard. Couples massage room? check. Sauna? check. Within my budget? check. I bought a gift certificate and made a reservation. We checked in on Sunday evening and were whisked away upstairs to the spa. The spa host explained the layout (helpful - so we didn't feel lost) and told us to help ourselves to the snacks (almonds, walnuts and dried cranberries) throughout. We got changed and were encouraged to use the dry sauna prior to our massage. We sweat it out for a few minutes to loosen up our muscles. We then were summoned to the massage room. Though its a "couples room" we were facing opposite directions. So together but separate. I picked out my fragrance, he picked his and we got started. Hot stones - yow!! What a treat....they really help your muscles loosen up and allow the therapist to get in there and get work done. The beds are heated and I was always comfortable. The 90 minutes passed in a heartbeat. I liked that my therapist asked me if I wanted her to do some more deep-tissue work, or "just keep it relaxing". The entire massage was heavenly. Hands, feet, and head sufficiently rubbed. The massage lotions and oils they use smell great and are truly luxurious. We were given our instructions to drink tons of water and to relax in the sauna. Off to sweat some more! Then a quick shower (love the Aveda products!!) and we were downstairs to pay. Since I read the reviews, I was ready for a sales pitch for products. We didn't get any upsell at all. I'm not sure if it was because it was late, or if it was because we had a massage and those products aren't as easy to sell (as compared to a facial). But there was nothing, which I appreciated. Particularly since I splurged on the 90 minute massage AND then we opted for the heated stones add-on. I love this place, the prices have gone up, I will say, but so has cost of living in general in Seattle. And I will say if there's a problem you have to complain long and hard to get compensation for your experience. However, I have been going to this spa for 10 years, since before they moved after the fire at the other location and in all that time I have only had one bad experience (my 60 minute treatment was 40 tops, yes I time it! you're paying a big number for those precious minutes!) I love it, I especially love the salt scrub and river rock massage treatments. Also just to point out, I'm seeing a common theme, for the most part the spa treatment reviews are pretty stellar, and the salon reviews aren't. And I have to say, no matter how deep my love for Aveda body products, they turn my hair into a brillo pad if I use the shampoo or conditioner more than once in a blue moon. read more

Relaxation station! Habitude in Ballard is a one stop shop for relaxation. Hair, massages, facials, a sauna, etc. is a good way to spend an evening or a day pampering yourself. I like that they use natural products and the facials are relaxing. I've been to the other Habitude for hair and liked it. I've enjoyed massages and facials at the Ballard location. The massages are more spa like and less medically therapeutic. The facials are great and more relaxing than a medical facial place. read more

I'm only reviewing this place because of Holly's incredible mani/pedi services. Since I am a hairstylist my fingernail polish doesn't usually make it very long, but my toes are another story! She has really given me the best nail services of my life... She was once at Habitude and then at Spa Scotta, and now she's back! She's worth the trek, people. I have naturally very long fingernails that I choose to file into what one would call a "stiletto" or curved point. I am very specific about the way they are shaped because my hands and fingernails are constantly in direct line of vision of my clients and I prefer them to appear well-manicured and professional, as a reflection of my services. Holly does her absolute best to maintain my preferred shape with a few little additions I forget to do myself, like buffing. Did I mention that Holly herself is also very talented, chatty, professional, and cute? She is also an LMP. Obviously, people have variable experiences here, but I've been here twice for eyebrow waxing and it's been an extremely positive experience both times. The first time was about a year or two ago. The woman was very sweet but I can't remember her name. She did a really great job and encouraged me to come back for a facial since I have some problematic skin. Finally, I got around the the facial and waxing again just yesterday. I had Caitlyn. I've only one facial before, so Caitlyn was nice enough to walk me through every step of the process. She started off with a foot soak, which I was not expecting, and explained how the next 90 minutes would go. I really appreciated her excitement and enthusiasm about every step- she truly loves what she does and that makes a huge difference in your experience! They eyebrow wax was good- I appreciated the conversation she made during waxing because it distracts me from any discomfort. Then came the amazing facial experience. They are customized to your skin so it will change depending on your skin type and issues. I loved that you get to pick the aromatherapy scent that is used throughout the 90 minutes. She did a leg scrub and foot massage as my face steamed, then wrapped them in hot towels. The arm massage was another great part. The head massage was probably the best head massage I've EVER had and I've had a good amount. I honestly might go back just for that alone. The transitions between each step were smooth and relaxing- nothing caught me off guard and it really allowed me to fully relax. Today I woke up and my skin is smooth and so much better despite the brow wax and extractions! I hope to make this a bi-monthly treat for myself in the future. This review is only for their spa services - specifically their pregnancy massages. I have always had a great haircut here. I have gotten pregnancy massages at various places around Seattle. I have found Habitude Ballard's to be the most inconsistent. Overall, the space is lovely, the massages are fine for relieving backaches and tension, and the staff are generally nice. However, the staff seem very inexperienced at dealing with pregnant women, which is surprising since they offer a pregnancy message. I have done 2 pregnancy massages here in the last 2 months (mid and end of third trimester). The first masseuse told me their standard was to do pregnancy massages on the back with the back raised; the second person said their standard was to do pregnancy massages on the side with pillows, but all on one side instead of turning me over to do the other side. Both had different answers for whether pregnant women could drink the tea or use the sauna. The inconsistencies were very strange; most places in the area that offer pregnancy massages (Elaia, Ananya,...) are really consistent with their services and their responses to questions. I will go back here for hair services, and perhaps try their non-pregnancy massages. But I would be hesitant to go back for a pregnancy massage. read more

I went to Habitude several times. I liked JW but it seemed like he was always out of town... With others, my hair cuts were hit or miss. I had same problem as previous poster- people wanting to blow out my naturally thick and wavy hair. When you have a short cut that only serves to make you look like a mushroom head (...or worse). Oh and I hate Aveda products. They all smell the same way, like an overly ripe, spicy, botanical pear. Or something like that. They manage to both strip my dry hair and leave it oily. A difficult task indeed! I had a facial there once and I couldn't relax because the annoying little guy kept remarking about how tense I was. Many, many, many times. I live right across the street and was looking for a salon closer to home and decided to give Habitude a try. Won't be doing that again! I made an appointment and then had to reschedule. The girl on the phone was pretty rude, put me on hold for over 5 minutes, couldn't find my original appointment, hassled me over rescheduling. The day of the appointment, I was pretty clear about what I wanted - just a trim , reshaping some layers, not too much off as I was trying to grow out my hair. The stylists was uncommunicative. The only time she showed any cheer was when she mentioned she'd be happy to straighten my hair for me. (Ack! Really?! I LOVE my curls - and that just happens to be a personal pet peeve). I looked up in the mirror a few times, and she was actually looking out of the window while cutting my hair! Oh my ... Is it any wonder I walked out of there with an absolutely hideous haircut? I got a facial and mani/pedi groupon--I had never gone to Habitude and thought it was a good opportunity to try it out. The facial was good--similar to other facials I've gotten--I'm not so sure about the $45 up-charge for the peel, as the acid peels I've gotten seem to yield better results. The Mani/pedi was nice but a few things: 1. The pedi polish didn't last more than three days! For the price, you're better off going to an Asian nail salon where it lasts weeks. 2. There are no water jets for your feet. 3. The chairs aren't exactly comfortable. 4. The magazine selection was limited and boring. I'm glad I tried them out, but I'd say the experience was only so-so, and if I had paid full price, I would have given it one star. read more

I had a great experience here. However, I only had a facial done by the kindest woman and it was my first facial ever. When I arrived, they offered me some delicious tea and their changing area/robe all seemed pretty clean. I thought she said her name was Karma, but I'm not seeing that name in other reviews, so now I'm thinking her name may have been Kayla? All I can say is... if she is beautiful, blond and the nicest, you'll have a great session. We chatted through the hour and she explained everything to me as she moved on to different steps. I loved the feeling of all the products she used on my face and her massage of my neck, shoulders and arms felt great. If I didn't like talking to her so much, I would have fallen asleep. All staff members I encountered were sweet and made sure I was comfortable while I was there. The experience was quite relaxing. It sounds like most of the poor experiences for other Yelpers was with their hair salon, but I'll go ahead and say I recommend getting a facial here! This review is for the spa-I've never had my hair cut here. The place is really big so it loses some of that homey comfortable feel. There are new people working here every time I go. On the plus side, I've had brazilian waxes done there and Amanda is fantastic. Booked the Ultimate 1.5 hour massage with Arjuna and paid with my 40 for 80 Groupon. Did not get heckled or given attitude when I booked my appt over the phone. The spa is quaint - small and shares space with the manicurists, showers, sauna (coed with curtains), changing space all on the second floor. Dried fruit, self serve lemon water and the rumor of fruit smoothies are complimentary. Arjuna has 20 years of massage experience so they really hooked me up on my first visit She is worth every freakin' penny. I have had the worst neck/shoulder kink for the last two weeks - planning a wedding that keeps falling through, work stress, etc - and normally when someone works through my knots, I end up crying or not breathing. Or both at the same time...which is really difficult if you think about it. She spent the majority of the time trying to relieve the pressure and had to move on since the body can only handle so much deep tissue before it begins to backfire. I think I will need to book a 1 hr follow up with her next week (bummer? ya right!). Also - straight up the BEST scalp massage I have ever had. Ever. Like, I might start a Facebook fan page just for Arjuna's scalp massage. Like other Yelpers have stated, there is a wee bit of a retail aspect when you're finished. However, Arjuna didn't bring me a basket 'o crap for my to buy, just mentioned that the Action Oil she used to warm up my body for the massage was available downstairs and then recommended the group massage room for my fiance and I after the wedding and said that there are some wonderful hair and makeup folks downstairs if I was looking for wedding glamour, which I thought was very helpful and not at all pushy. Arjuna also teaches massage, does Reiki, and is a doula. Girl can HOOK IT UP. Oh, and the crazy thing is that she didn't even inform me of this, I asked downstairs about her experience. I find this very classy of her, but I wish she was allowed to promote her other services. Or maybe she can but she just didn't feel it was relevant. Only reason it doesn't get a 5 is the price. For $140, I would expect more amenities prior to the massage besides some dried fruit, lemon water, and a coed sauna. Other spas in this price range usually have a plunge pool, both hot and cold, and also make sure you know that you can stay as long as you like. Habitude did not. read more

I enjoy getting my haircut here - it feels a bit more like going to a spa than just a hair salon. They have a wide range of prices - starting around $30 up to $70, so you can find someone in your budget. I started with someone at $30 and now she's $42 about 9 months later. She's given me a good haircut 3 out of the 4 times. I also had her for an up-do last summer. She did a decent job - the price I paid was equivalent to what I got. If you're wanting a fantastic up-do it's probably worth paying the going rate - $50 rather than going cheaper, which is what I did. Only three stars because - it's always crowded, magazine selection stinks, and they try to push their Aveda products on you. read more

I had been thinking of going to Habitude and voila, there was a Groupon. I had a haircut, "conditioning treatment" and makeup application. Working backward: The makeup application was done very well, but the woman who helped me had a kind of hyper energy, very product sales-oriented, and kept apologizing to her next client who was sitting and waiting (and not looking stressed) and kind of acting like she had to rush. Well, I did not come in late or do anything wrong, so calm down. But honestly, I can't imagine a reason I would ever go there and pay $47 for someone to do my makeup anyway. It did look really good! And slightly better than when I do it myself. So, the "conditioning treatment" - I have no idea what that involved and I am glad it was just part of the Groupon because it was supposed to be a $25 value. My hair is pretty healthy but it pretty much seemed the same as a normal shampoo and conditioning (maybe she forgot to do it or something). So that's a wash anyway since I didn't really pay for it. Last the haircut, I love it! And I will definitely go back. Despite there being some negative sides to my review, I do like the haircut. Next time I will just go ahead and get a haircut only. I do like the big, bright space, their longer hours, and all the people I met there were really nice. After a long week of sitting in planes for conferences I was in desperate need of a massage! The only bad part was that it was late in the afternoon on a Sunday. So, looking to my fellow yelpers for help, I searched for a place to that would help me get rid of the neck pain from the long flights. I decided to check out Habitude in Ballard. I was offered four different appointment times that very afternoon. It was easy to find and great parking on a Sunday night and they were open late! I was offered tea or water, shown around, instructed on how to put my things away in the lockers, change, shower, and what to do while I waited. I sat in the dry sauna for 20 minutes with a cold glass of water and was nice and warm by the time Sally, my massage therapist came to get me. She sat me down and asked what my problem areas were and what I liked and disliked. HELLO! What a concept...asking the customer what she likes! I have this one weird tickle spot on my back and have never had anyone be able to do anything about it but avoid that area. Sally was amazing and figured out how to keep me from feeling tense & jumpy when she went over that spot! Yay! She used the perfect amount of pressure and by the time I was done...I was so relaxed and sleepy! Amazing! I took a nice long hot shower afterward with all the aveda products (which were never pushed on me) and blow dried my hair. I never felt rushed or weird around the other customers. Went downstairs to check out the different scents they had and got out of there without spending too much! I would defnitely recomment Habitude and especially Sally! read more

I went to the freemont location about 5-6 months ago and RAVEN cut my hair and it was FABULOUS! (don't have her last name) I have never received so many compliments on my hair ever! I was impressed with all the aspects of this spa. Compared to other spas in Seattle, this place has lots of bells and whistles. My massage was pretty amazing too. They have various implements at the ready: scented oils that you choose, scented water sprayed over your face, super hot towels on the skin, interesting (and painful) massage techniques, etc. They have showers, lockers, robes, etc. The customer service was really nice and inviting. read more

I just went in for a brow wax and a pedicure. New aesthetician (to me), she did an okay job, but made me feel uncomfortable, and she was very pushy with the products. Something new at Habitude - now, when you go, they fill a basket of goodies of items they would like to sell to you, In fact, this gal was so self involved and pushy with the products, she made me late for my pedicure. When I mentioned this as I paid for my services, the cashier informed me that it must be me, and that obviously our personalities didnt fit. Well, honey, no, it is you. Thu did my pedicure, and I couldn't be happier! She was fabulous, took amazingly great care of my tired little tootsies. they are now a beautiful bright pink, ready for Palm Springs! I highly recommend her for pedicures. So, a mediocre wax experience was offset by a fabulous pedicure. Will I be back? The answer is, will I get another gift card? read more

When you walk in there is just TOO much going on hair salon.... random retail stuff they are displaying and selling, really distracting nothing that offers that calm inviting spa feel nobody greets you i had to ask several people to find out the actual spa is upstairs and when I arrive no body is there so waited for me to find someone to help. Massage is ok below my expectations therapist did not listen to my preference and didnt' explain anything she was doing afterwards the check out process was very poor they didnt ask how the service was or anything surprised how unfriendly they were. I took my mom to Habitude for a birthday spa day. We each had a facial, full body massage, and a mani-pedi (bought via Groupon). The spa was great. When we walked in, we received a tour of the spa and shown to the women's locker room where we were given robes and flip flops to wear. We had our pick of waiting areas, or "living rooms", to lounge in while we waited to be called back. The living rooms were nicely appointed with leather couches and chairs, soft light, magazines, and fruit and nuts to munch on. We were also offered water and tea. Both of us enjoyed the facials and massages. Alicia gave me one of the best facials I've ever had, and I've had quite a few. Molly was my massage therapist and was also fantastic. Both took the time to consult with me about my face/body before the service, and ensured that I was enjoying myself throughout. The mani-pedi's were only okay. I felt that my nail tech didn't really try to shape my nails or make them look uniform. She also left a noticeable gap between the polish and my cuticle, even after I asked her to go closer. I would not go there for a manicure or pedicure again. I usually get regular pedicures from Source Salon and Spa, and will continue going there for those services in the future. My one reservation about my time at Habitude was the prices. My other and I got an amazing deal on our services, but I don't know if I would pay $106+ for a facial on a regular basis. read more

One of the best Groupon deals I have done as far as what it offered and it was very easy to schedule my appointment and redeem. The whole experience was fantastic. It is a very well run place and the staff is super courteous and helpful. Nice sitting areas, locker room, and sauna. This review is specifically relating to brow/eyelash tint & shape by Nikole. I have transparent eyebrows and eyelashes. They don't take color very well. They are shaped funny. I typically where big glasses to hide them. Nikole to the rescue! I had a Groupon for Habitude a couple years ago and went for the Eye Package that includes a brow/last tine and brow shape. It is expensive so I figured that utilizing the Groupon for this would be a good way to test it out because I have had some horrible tinting experiences....like one time someone thought they should be dark brown/black and I have strawberry blonde hair and very light skin. She was able to create the most magical brows for me. I look like a normal person. Perfect tint, shape, everything and it lasts a good amount of time. Totally proves to me that sometimes it is better to just throw down the money for something that I know is perfect than continue to bounce from place to place and be dissatisfied. MELTING. Maybe it's the post massage relaxation high (should I be using the word "glow"? Whatever.) but I'm so in love with this place. I've actually been going for awhile but this last session was so amazing that I felt compelled to write a review. I usually see Bridget. She is magic. Like SO good. Just the right amount of pressure. For me, that's somewhere in between medium-firm and hurts-so-good (but she's adaptable). I feel totally comfortable with her. Strong, great rhythm (did you know that's a thing? It matters) and so in tune with whatever I need. She's professional but also just a cool person and easy to talk to. I highly recommend working with her. I recently saw Jeff as well. I usually prefer lady therapists but he was awesome. He started off breathing with me which I really appreciated. Great massage, excellent pressure. He made me feel very at ease and seemed to be full of empathy. Everyone should be more like Jeff. The spa itself is just really nice. It's definitely good for people who are into "spa-life" (*acknowledges privilege*). Everyone talks with that soft-and-deep-but -not-quite-a-whisper-spa-voice and you are greated with cucumber/lemon water or tea. There are nuts and berries in the "pampering alcove." There is a sauna. The locker room is stocked with aveda products and has two nice private shower rooms. Somehow, even though I'm pretty sure they book several massages at any given time, there is rarely more than one other person in the locker room so it feels relatively private. Downsides? It's admittedly expensive but honestly worth it for me because I'm willing to pay more for the experience. read more

Despite all the bluster in my previous review, I have continued to return to Habitude for haircuts and have found my recent experiences more in line with what I was accustomed to prior to issuing my 2-star assessment. I have received good haircuts, prompt service, and the "Aveda experience" I enjoy. Stylist turnover seems to have slowed some too. I have been seeing the same faces every 6-8 weeks, and I take that as another sign of improvement in the salon operations. On my last visit, I overheard one stylist ask her customer whether she preferred Aveda or B&B products, and though I have never been given the option, my stylists have used Aveda products exclusively on my last few visits. This is worth clarifying since it was one of my big gripes in my previous review. As a long-time Habitude customer (7+ years), I do not think my prior observations about the salon's state of affairs last year were off-base, but I am so glad to be able to share my recent positive experiences and raise my Yelp rating. read more

This was my first complete spa experience, so I have nothing to compare it to, but it was pretty great. The overall atmosphere of the spa was great: warm, welcoming, very natural and extremely relaxing. The changing room was very nice, clean and, for being at a spa, relaxingly masculine. The sauna was very nice and didn't have the traditional sauna stink. It was soothing, hot, robes and towels were provided within the sauna and there was enough water to be able to control the humidity and bring it up to the level that I feel all saunas should be. There were a few wonderfully quiet, dark and warm lounge areas and a nice supply of lemon water and fruit/nuts. The services I had were pretty good too. I will now commence with Yelping the ladies who took care of me. Genevieve was incredible for my massage. I have this righteous knot in my shoulder that she was able to tame like the wicked lion that it is. She was very sensative to my troubled spots, but totally not afraid to push me to the limit while keeping me in the happy relaxed zone. Janeen gave me an amazing facial. Since it was my first one, she explained what she was doing and engaged me in conversation until I was comfortable, and then she knew when to let me just fall asleep. It was a bit amazing. Overall, I can't wait to go back. The regular prices seem a bit high to me, but then who am I to judge since I have no point of reference prior to this.
