I went to Habitude because I found an amazing stylist, Kate. She makes my thin hair look full and bouncy. She was always professional. When I called to schedule an appointment, the receptionist told me that she was no longer working there. The receptionist shared negative information about Kate and her departure, and would not provide me with information about Kate's new salon. In my opinion, this makes Habitude look bad. (I called more than once and spoke to different people; I received the same story.) Kate was my stylist for 2+ years at Habitude. I didn't want a new stylist, so after some aggressive internet searching, I was ecstatic to find Kate at Vann Edge Salon in Downtown Seattle. I don't know the details of Kate's departure from Habitude; I don't need to know. Ultimately, it is inappropriate for representatives of Habitude to repeat negative stories about past employees to clients. read more

After a hiatus of not having time to write reviews, I have now found the occasion to break my silence. I have found the time to write this because still after a night of mulling it over, I'm still miffed. I read all the reviews so I thought I'd be well prepared. I didn't book online, I called in because reviews had said the front desk wasn't happy with people when they booked online when they used a groupon or when booking a specialty service. I elaborated to the front desk about which service I wanted, I even discussed what I was preparing to do in the day to make the most of the service (I was going to pre-soak so that I could get in all the detoxifying and moisturizing wrap goodness into my skin). We even discussed how the soak would affect the treatment and so it was booked - "the Golden Scarab Glow". Or so I thought. The Golden Scarab Glow reads, "According to ancient Egyptian myths, the scarab pushes the sun as it rolls across the sky each day and transforms bodies and souls. Transform with this detoxifying and anti-aging full-body wrap that replenishes, tones and revitalizes the skin. A full body loofah exfoliation improves circulation and prepares the skin to receive nourishing antioxidant healing. A fragrant masque and moisturizer follows to infuse vitamins and hydration. Breathe in the aromas of a lavish face and scalp massage, as you lay cocooned like Queen of the Nile". Upon starting treatment, Kayla explained that she would be doing an exfoliation and did I know what dry exfoliation was...and she went on to explain what it was and she said that she would also be wrapping my hair up to moisturize as well. And she asked if I had any questions and I asked her "If she was going to do the face and scalp massage?" and she said "yes". I did not even think I needed to ask her about the wrap and moisturizing since it seems fairly obvious what that is and since it was the main part of the treatment. I thought she was highlighting the unusual parts of the treatment, since dry exfoliation may be new to some people or because the hair wrap part was not written in the descriptor, I thought she was just letting me know she was going to do that while she was doing the body wrap. She did a short exfoliation on my limbs and belly and moisturized my hair which I had just finished blowing out right before the appointment, gave my hair conditioning, and a very short face and scalp massage and then told me I was done. During the treatment, I had wanted to ask her why she didn't exfoliate my back but I kept thinking that it was coming and I kept wondering when the wrap was coming but I just told myself to not question the process and try to enjoy it. Hard to relax when you're wondering when things are going to happen but you don't want to be rude by asking. When she told me I was done, I asked if the blanket cover was considered the wrap because I didn't notice any moisturizing being done and she told me that she had done the Hydration Salt Glow on me. Enter the Hydration Salt Glow descriptor," A full body exfoliating treatment using essential oils and Dead Sea salts, which smooth, soften and revitalize skin". Huh. So I spent a half a day soaking so I could relish in a detoxifying body wrap but not get my body wrapped and moisturized. And I had spent a long amount of time blowing out my hair properly (as opposed to my normal quick deal) only to have my hair conditioned and wrapped and moisturized. Ironic. It's been a long long time since I had time off to relax. I wouldn't have even been so bent out of shape if they apologized for the mistake and did right by it. Instead, the guest services director, Paul, while admitting they got the booking wrong, tells me that because I did not speak up about the service I received until the end, I should pay for it. AND HOW WAS I TO KNOW THAT IT WAS NOT THE RIGHT SERVICE???? The service I booked for starts with an exfoliation and has a face and scalp massage component to it, it was not like I was lying there hoping that they wouldn't do the right service so I could benefit from this. As well, as I look at the description of the service that I did receive, the Hydration Salt Glow was supposed to be a full body exfoliation..if by limbs and a belly is considered a full body then, yes, you are right, it was what I got. It was this insinuation that I had used this to my advantage that makes me so mad. Habitude you owe me half a day of my time that I had used to prepare myself for this service and for my driving a GREAT DISTANCE and you did not deliver. Moreover, YOU DO NOT VALUE YOUR CLIENTS. My time and my emotional well being is too important to me to make the effort to come to your space(s) again. HABITUDE needs a new ATTITUDE. read more

I have been going to Habitude for over 10 years and always loved it. This time around, I hadn't been for a year or two and went in to have a massage. I was really really looking forward to a luxurious spa pampering - the robes, the sauna, the aromatherapy that smells so good for a massage but makes you smell like a hippie in any other context.... I was pretty disappointed. First of all, the massage itself was wonderful, the staff from my masseuse to the front desk were all very friendly and made me feel very comfortable. If I could rate individually, service would get 5 stars. The problem is, the whole earthy vibe they have going on there has gone a bit too far... into their towels, robes, cups and locker rooms. Everything smelled like mildew! When I put on the robe, I cringed a little as you could tell they had been around for a long long time. As soon as I got up from my massage, instead of feeling pampered and fresh, I wanted to run for the shower. When I got to the shower, I changed my mind as it smelled even more mildew-y than I did! Since I decided to hold off on the shower, I thought I may as well make use of the sauna. However, there was a large, sweaty, very hairy man in there who is apparently a regular and makes a Saturday routine of shower to sauna and back again. I think I'll pass.... I love the people, the products, the services, but I think the place is due for an upgrade and some new towels and robes. A sauna in the women's locker room would be amazing while they're at it. read more

Got my hair "balayage" today. I had a picture of the color that I wanted and look and it looks horrible. This is probably the worst color I have ever gotten and it cost me $240. I will never come back to this salon, I saw other people's hair that didn't look the greatest either. For $240 I expected my hair to look better. Now I have to figure out who can fix my hair. I booked a surprise birthday massage for my fiancee. The fact that it was a surprise was clearly explained, the info was put as a note on the appointment, and they took MY name, payment info and phone number in case there were any issues. The next day, they called HER to confirm her appointment. Not sure how this happened, given that it was my info that was provided, but super disappointing given this was not only the only gift I got her this year, but moreover spoiled a series of other surprise plans this was related to. When I called to explain what had happened, I expected at least a token discount or service add-on for the screw up. Instead, I was told that next time "I should put it under my name if it's a secret" and that "they'd speak with their scheduling team about reading the notes". Really? That's the extent of the response? Blame for not setting it up differently (even though that's how THEIR reservations team had me set it up in the first place) and a flaccid assurance that they'd remind someone how to do their job? I've been patronizing Aveda salons (different locations) for years and have come to expect a lot better from this brand, given the price point. If I wanted to be treated so impersonally, I could have gone 5 blocks up the road to massage envy for half the price. This location will not be getting a dime of our business again, which is a shame, given it's two blocks from where we live and are always down to spend a little more for preferred service. read more

I like to be positive, so let's open w/ the good: Britney for the brow wax was delightful. Her work was flawless and she's very friendly. Salon was beautiful and smelled great. I wanted to love it. Now for the bad: I haven't taken my hat off since I left the salon, and getting to that point took 2 appointments. I'm not uptight with my hair, at all. I have been every different color, zillions of cuts...pretty much my only requirement is that I walk out feeling cute and sassy with a little funky thrown in. I have never once felt like complaining after getting my hair done. I called to make the appt (I had a Groupon...I know, first mistake) I wanted to make sure I was put with someone who could bleach my natural brunette (hasnt been colored in almost 2 years, and all the parts that had been dyed have been cut off long ago)to platinum and do an "ombre" type color on the ends. The receptionist assured me this stylist (Justin) would be great even after I told him I was happy to pay extra above the groupon for a higher level stylist and the add'l color. In this same conversation, I asked him how long he expected the appt to take, he said about an hour and a half. I've had my hair bleached platinum before and that seemed like a low estimate, so I figured in 2 1/2 hours before making other plans. Once at the salon, my stylist seemed wary of what I wanted to do, but said he could do it. He seemed disinterested, at best, in talking about what I wanted from my cut or color. I should have bailed right then. It then took an hour to get the bleach onto my hair, he kept walking away, saying he would be back soon, but disappearing for 5-10 mins each time. No big deal, if that was it. After I had been processing for quite a while, he took me to the shampoo chair and had me wait there, I then sat there, laying in the not-totally comfortable position of head hanging back in the shampoo bowl, so I couldn't even read to pass the time. While laying in limbo, I heard him ask someone (a more experienced color stylist, I assumed) if my hair was ready. She said yes, and that it would need a toner, which should help get the color even and take the brassiness out of it. Super. Except he didn't do that. I sat for another 20 mins. Then I was washed, with cold water. Maybe that's necessary, but I don't remember ever being washed with purely cold water anywhere. Between washing and conditioning, I was getting downright frigid, so I finally asked if I could get the water to be a little warmer, to which he said "oh, yeah, ok". Great, so that was a recreational ice bath. At this point, we were both getting antsy, we were over 2 hours into the appt and not even half the work was done. He started telling me that someone else would probably take over...I have never had that happen, but I wasn't necessarily against it. He then haphazardly slapped purple into my hair, and left again. Came back, rinsed me out, took me back to his chair to blow dry. At that point, he said he was wondering if I could come back tomorrow to do the cut, as he was out of time. We were 3 hours in at this point, and I had been told the whole shebang would last 1 1/2 hours. I didn't want anyone rushing and not doing their best, so I said ok. I sat down with the apprentice, who proceeded to just try to sell me products. I asked her to dry my hair and not worry about style, since I was coming back the next day and I was ready to go home. She kept talking about products. As soon as I was dry-ish, I told her that was fine, and I wanted to go. I went to check out, that took forever, and they didn't know how to figure out how to split up payment between the days, even though I was standing there trying to pay for everything at once, even the services I hadn't had done yet (cut and brow wax). I finally walked out the door almost 4 hours after walking in for a 1 1/2 hour appointment. And then I had to come back. The next day was...ok. It looks like a 45 year old anchor woman's haircut (from Robert), not the angled, stacked bob I wanted, but if that was the only hangup, I would let it slide and just not come back. I was too frustrated at that point to make a fuss. My color is choppy and streaky instead of ombre'd (I know I am making that contraction up, sorry), my blonde is brassy and uneven, and my cut makes it look even more ridiculous. And I wasted 5 hours of my life (not including drive time on 2 trips) to look like this. I have no interest in going back, so I guess it's time to invest in more hats and a new salon, on the quick. read more

For more than 8 years, I frequented Habitude at the Locks in Ballard. When I first began going, the services were high-priced but quite worth it, the staff was attentive, friendly, yet professional, and the atmosphere was relaxing in a new-age sort of way. I'd had massages, reflexology, hair cuts/styles/color, manicures, pedicures ,waxing and facials. In the past two years, however, they seem to have gone to the dark side. They can't seem to hold on to any of their long-time, tried and true employees, and their current staffers are inexperienced, seem to be 'wishing they were somewhere else instead of working on me' and quite unfocused. Too bad, since their prices are higher than ever, exceeding most of the other local 'high end' spas in the area. My worst - and last - experience occurred last year, when I had a brow wax, got significantly burned, wrote to both the owner and the Locks location manager explaining my long time client status, the recent brow wax burn experience, and how disappointed I'd become in their salon -- and a few weeks later I received a 'Dear Jane' letter 'thanking me for my input'. The lack of customer service had hit an all-time low, and I will never go there again, nor will I recommend friends or colleagues to go either. There are so many other options for salon services in the Seattle area - ones that I'm certain are more eager to have you - and keep you - as a client. read more

Services are lush, atmosphere is gorgeous, shop is full of all kinds of cute little things and the whole spa experience definitely feels high-end but still homey. You're always offered tea or fancy water, robes, slippers and a relaxing sauna or waiting room are the place to lounge before and after your service if you wish, showers and other amenities are provided if you'd like to really spruce up after. The only drawbacks are that there's occasional difficulty/strangeness when booking services, it's not a terrible situation, but do be super clear about what you want and confirm if you're in any way unsure about time/date. Online booking, while convenient, seems to confuse their system if you're already a customer as well. Also, it seems as though there's a reasonably high staff turnover in relation to the massage therapists at least, the upside, I've not had a bad one yet so don't worry, their massages (and other services) are all amazing. read more

I decided to splurge and get my hair cut at Habitude after walking by many times and thinking it looked like a fun salon. The stylist was pleasant and worked pretty fast and efficiently considering I was having 7+ inches of hair chopped off. It was a $45 cut and I tipped $10 because I left feeling happy with my new look. The next morning I threw my hair back into a ponytail and I noticed right away that there was a small clump that hung down 2 inches longer than the rest of my hair. Hmm...that didn't seem right. Later after I'd washed and dried my hair I noticed there were actually a few spots where the hair was visibly hanging down much longer than my new angled bob cut. I called the salon and they didn't seem too surprised nor were they apologetic that I was seeking a "fix" of the haircut. When I went in to get my hair fixed, I brought my two children with me - the husband was out of town and I wasn't going to pay for a babysitter to go back to the salon I'd already shelled out $55 to! Two minutes later as I sat in the chair, I heard the stylist and customer a few seats over talking loudly about how inappropriate it was that I had brought my children into the salon. I said something to my stylist about it and she said that actually the salon has a very strict no kids policy and that we were lucky to have snuck them past the front desk. It took her less than 5 minutes to fix my cut, and then I quickly ushered my kids out of there. I won't name the stylist because she was very nice and did a good job of fixing the cut, I just wish it had been done right the first time. Muy, muy malo...MUY! Dealing with Habitude is a lot like blind dating. Sure the prospect pumps them self up to be this wonderful experience, but after the experience is over, one wonders if the planets are lined against them. Rather than admit a request is beyond their capabilities, the staff at Habitude would rather set the damage rolling, not only on one's head and body, but, on their wallet as well. And don't expect an apology or restitution in the aftermath of destruction. A manager who I never saw or met seemed to have some rather intimate knowledge of my hair. Apparently after my lifetime relationship with my hair, I knew less about it than the manager did. Interesting. Habitude is mainly about product sales rather than service. The Northwest rustic chic direction in dcor is a pretentious kafuffle. Not exactly sure where they are going with that. I am also confused as to where Habitude finds the nerve to bag up some of the product they sell to present at the end of one's experience at like it is a gift bag. This used to be my go to place to get a hair cut because Kermit is awesome. However, he was booked recently so I went with someone else that the front desk assured me was great with curly hair. It was NOT GOOD. My hair is 3 inches shorter than we discussed. He aggressively brushed my hair out into a large poof ball then cut it. I understand cutting curly hair dry in order to see the shape of the curls and the true length but why on earth would he brush it out then cut it? I never ever would wear my hair brushed out like that... it shows you none of the curls and none of the length. He also seemed to be all hyped up on coffee and he kept dropping clips and brushes constantly. The worst part: the back of my hair is so so so uneven when straightened. It's embarrassing. I know, I know, I probably should have said I was uncomfortable during the cut but I was feeling very rushed and not welcomed there. Unfortunately, spending $65 plus tip on a hair cut is a stretch on my meager income and I was disappointed by this experience. I do not think I will be coming back. read more

I came here for a re-color after being very disappointed with my hair color at the Fremont location, so I was rebooked to a more senior stylist to fix my hair to the color I wanted. First off, I have black hair and I wanted red streaks, similar to the red on this yelp page. After spending nearly 3 hours there, I walked out with brown highlights essentially. At best, it was like a natural red, which--again--against my black hair just looked like brown highlights. It was nothing like what I wanted. I even brought pictures to show the exact shade of red I wanted. After the stylist first washed out my color, she asked if it was what I wanted. I said no, so she took me back to put another all over color on top to give it more red. After that--she didn't even bother asking me if it was ok. She just wanted to be done with me and dried my hair and let me go. I don't know if it's because I was essentially a free job since it was a do-over, but the stylist did not seem interested at all in getting my hair to what I wanted. She was also pretty cold in meeting with me and barely talked to me. My overall experience with Habitude in hair is pretty terrible. I will never ever return to Habitude for hair color. For the Ballard location, I've only been happy with the spa experience (i.e. massages, facials) -- but as far as hair treatments are concerned, forget about it. I've been there a couple of times. The last time the reception desk seemed slightly annoyed when I called to confirm my appointment due to a system error when booking online. However when I arrived they were very friendly. William cut my hair, he did exactly as I asked which tells me he's a good listener and I appreciate that however if you're looking for a conversational type I would try someone else. Today I had a bit of chaos in the morning and I was running about 5 minutes behind. I called to let them know I was running behind and they said that they were packed so tightly I would need to reschedule. I'm disappointed. People run into problems from time to time, it's unfortunate that they didn't account for this and allow a few minutes on each side of an appointment. I booked in advance because of the nature of the appointment. Based on my past and most recent experience, I will find another salon and I wouldn't recommend their services to others. read more

I really want to like this place given the proximity to my house. I've given it several tries and this time I'm not sure I'll be back. I went for a haircut my hair is very curly/textured and I'm sure mask wearing/COVID precautions (which they're doing well) makes it all the more difficult to cut but my hair came out totally uneven. There are several chunks that were just not cut. Considering I spent a solid hour in the chair and $70 plus I'd expect better. I've previously gotten color service there too that was okay but again for their price point I wasn't super impressed. read more

Let me preface this review by saying that I have only visited the gift store inside, and have not gotten my hair done or gotten a massage or anything like that. After walking past this place many, many times, my friend and I went in to see what it was all about. The inside looked large and spacious, and several people were getting their hair cut. When we walked in, we were greeted by the staff at the front desk. Since we were only there to look at the gift shop, we said hello back and turned to start looking at some of the items. As we walked around looking at everything, I kind of had this odd feeling that they were watching us the whole time. It just felt sort of uncomfortable. I didn't find anything in the store I was interested in purchasing, despite the fact that they had all sorts of items. Prices were very high, even for small things like candles. I'm not adverse to trying Habitude for a hair cut/color or massage sometime, but I just didn't really like the feeling I had when I was in there. read more

I live in Fremont, so I decided to give the Fremont Habitude a try in December. I received an ok haircut, which motivated me to try it's big sister in Ballard when I was due for another cut in March. What a mistake. When I called for my appointment, I made sure to mention the fact that I have very curly hair and needed someone who knew what they were doing with it. Price didn't really matter - as long as I got a good cut. The girl who gave me the cut was nice enough, (wish I could remember her name:( ) and seemed competent. I told her my needs for the cut - a trim with some short layers added. I also told her what, if all else failed, I didn't want: no long layers, they make me look like I have a mullet and the shortest layer shouldn't fall at my chin (I'm pale with a square face and curly blond hair, so chin length hair makes my head look like a big blond puffball. Thanks, but I'll pass...) Since I do have very curly hair, I typically just get a shampoo and cut - blow drying only exacerbates the frizz-fest - so I opt out of that portion of the service. I got the haircut late in the day, so I ended up going to sleep with my hair still wet. The next morning, my new haircut revealed it's true self. I got exactly what I didn't want - a cross between a bob and a Carol Brady mullet - and there was a difference of at least 2 inches in the hair on either side of my face. I am not an overly vain person, and have never cried over a haircut - until that morning. Sweet God, I had a wonky Carol Brady-on-Crack-Bob. In summation: - every $20 haircut I got at SuperCuts during college was better than this. - come to think of it - the haircut my cousin gave me when I was 5 with safety scissors was better than this. - I have never demanded my money back for a service until now. - I had to wait until July to get a new cut so that it could grow out enough to be fixed. I was excited to get try out a new spa. This location is wonderful. The staff was pleasant, the tea was exquisite and they let you pick the aromatherapy scents . However, that's about all the positives I have for this location. 1) They messed up on the services I had requested which was a 1 hour long hot stone treatment. They said that they would accommodate me by making my massage an hour and a half and gave me a complimentary smoothie. I looked at the clock when it was over and it was still only an hour!! I would've said something but they had already jarred the feeling when they do a cooling mist spray right after they are done. It was like someone clapping their hands very loud. Very unnerving. Before the session had started, I had told my therapist about how wonderful the tea was she said that she would set aside some for me. Instead what did she do? She told the front desk that I wanted to buy some!! They had it down there waiting for me when I went to pay. I didn't like how they tried to push the products at me, so I didn't buy it. Overall, I would say, call ahead of time to confirm the session you are supposed to have, make sure you are aware of any policies of screw ups and if you can avoid the spray at the end of the massage, I would advise to. read more

You might wanna make this place a habit! I went here while visiting the beautiful city of Seattle. I was treated to a facial and mini massage. Let's just say that I was VERY relaxed from the wonderful aromas, oils and caressing... So relaxed in fact, that when I sauntered into the ladies with my fluffy white robe and herbal tea eager to saturate myself in the shower..I completely forgot that I was still wearing my skivvies. I will definitely go back if I ever make it back to the beautiful Northwest. read more

This is one of 2 places that I frequent for spa massage and facials. I've only had great specialists and relaxing experiences. I've also had waxing and pedicures there. Most recently, it was am essential massage by Liz. So great, perfect moderate pressure to relax my sore muscles (I only like firm moderate to deep pressure). The Aveda products, of course, are amazing. I do think that they could use an ungrade of the facility. Not really an atmosphere that I want to hang out in before /after treatment, like other places. I went to Habitude for a haircut, and here is what I saw: Habitude is very beautiful. It smells good. The stylists look good. The complementary tea tastes good if you like licorice. What is not happening at Habitude is any interesting hair cutting. Of the many clients I saw, just about all walked out with medium to long, straight hair with subtle highlights. I treated myself to a spa day at Habitude recently. It's an extravagance for me, and the first time I've done this. Previously I'd only been to Habitude for haircuts, but I'm not a fan of their tiered pricing system by stylist experience level, and go elsewhere now. That's another review altogether... My package consisted of a hot rocks massage, facial, and pedicure, and I ended up spending approximately 4 hours there. I guess I'll start at the begininng. If you read any of my reviews, you'll notice that the initial greeting I get in an establishment is very important to me and is something I weigh heavily in my reviews. In this case, the woman was friendly and polite, and greeted me within a few minutes of my arrival. However, she didn't seem to know how to use the check-in equipment and was very unclear about where I should go. She didn't let me know which service I would be getting first or give me a plan for my visit. Not really a big deal, but something for Habitude to consider incorporating. The changing room is clean, comfortable, and well-equipped. There are lockers, towels, robes, and flip flops. An assortment of Aveda products are available for guests in both the bathroom and shower areas. The waiting area is also comfortable, if not a bit small. I arrived mid-day on a Monday and it was not too busy, but I imagine it can get cramped on the weekend. Healthy snacks, like nuts and dried fruits were available, as well as water and tea. I was excited to use the sauna, but I never knew how long I would be waiting between services so I was reluctant. I did manage to go in once, for about 10 minutes, and I didn't break a sweat, indicating it was not hot enough, in my opinion. I'd never had a hot rocks massage. My masseuse was friendly and warm. The massage itself was relaxing and definitely more on the Swedish side. No deep tissue here. I found the frequent application and removal of hot rocks disturbing to the flow of the massage and I don't think I would use them again. My facial was effective and my skin was very soft and looked great afterwards. It wasn't exactly rushed, but she used so many different products that it didn't feel very relaxing. But hey, like I said, my skin felt wonderful afterwards so I'm not complaining. I'm really conflicted about my pedicure. On the one hand, it looked good. On the other hand, the experience was no better than a place that does it for half the price and has more comfortable chairs. And while the technician was very nice, she shared some disturbing personal information with me, which made the whole experience rather awkward. Bottom line, I loved being able to slow down and enjoy 4+ hours of pampering. The services and ambiance were average though, and for the price (around $300 before the tip), it's not something I'll do on a regular basis. Also, be aware that there are lots of attempts at upselling so be ready to pay more than originally expected or find creative ways to repeated say no. read more

Loved my experience at Habitude. The staff is SO friendly and wonderful and the facility is just great. The locker room and showers and amazing and I loved the robe and disposable slippers provided for use during my treatment. The nuts and cranberries and tea were lovely while I waited in the lounge for my service provider. Like 90% of the spas in Seattle, Habitude suffers from a lack of real customer service, but if you find a good service provider, it can be a good place to go. I personally like Delilah, who used to be my next door neighbor (down side: getting massages at HER apartment was way cheaper). She's a great therapist and gives a nice firm massage. The first time she massaged me, I think I proposed afterward. Parking is *meh*...luck of the draw. The space is lovely, but the acoustics in the spa can be Ooh Ahh or Eww Blah; I've had both experiences. Be aware that a couple of the treatment rooms in the spa are directly over the salon area, so if it's a hair-heavy day, you might be subjected to the calming, Ayurvedic sounds of a hairdryer and gossiping youngsters. I also hate the hard sell. I understand it's a part of the job, but can't they make it less...obvious? On the positive side, at least they're selling me something "organic" and "recyclable"... sort of. I do love Aveda, but since they were taken over by Estee Lauder, the products have become less unique. That's not Habitude's fault, though. What IS Habitude's fault is the high turn-over. Once you find someone you like, they're gone within 6 months to a year. That is a bummer. read more

Let me just say that I received a spa package here, as a Christmas gift, about 3 or 4 years ago from a friend... And the experience is still BURNED IN MY MEMORY as one of the BEST GIFTS I ever received! The FRIENDLIEST staff ever, and super great service! When I went, I had some kind of a neck, foot and hand massage package (probably a combo of 2 packages). The rooms for the massages were beautifully lit with peaceful music and colors. After my amazing massage, I was sent to the sauna, where I sat for 15 minutes of delicious heat and was surprised when someone delivered a fruit smoothie to me as part of my package! (the other ladies in there were jealous, let me tell you!) Finally, I was walked to the RAINFOREST SHOWER... Oh lordy, lordy! Can you just transport that shower room to my apt back home?? Please?? This shower was an individual large room for one person at a time - very private so you can take your time and relax... covered in a beautiful green tile, and the shower consisted of many water spouts all over the shower, which had different water consistencies - from waterfall like water falling, to misty spray... ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS! Seriously, take your loved one here to get a massage - the packages, for how luxurious they are - I think are very reasonable and worth the price! read more

Read this if you want to give an online GIFT CARD! I received an online gift card a year ago from a friend. However, due to my schedule being a new mom, I do not think that I will have time to use it. So, I am thinking of re-gifting the gift. I came to the salon, asking to purchase an actual gift card using the online gift card and it is NOT possible. Then, it comes down to that I can perhaps buy items and return it to receive store credit. After purchasing some items and trying to return, i just found out that the store credit is actually is in their system, under my name- so I can't really "re-gifting" the gift. SO DISAPPOINTING! Relaxation station! Habitude in Ballard is a one stop shop for relaxation. Hair, massages, facials, a sauna, etc. is a good way to spend an evening or a day pampering yourself. I like that they use natural products and the facials are relaxing. I've been to the other Habitude for hair and liked it. I've enjoyed massages and facials at the Ballard location. The massages are more spa like and less medically therapeutic. The facials are great and more relaxing than a medical facial place. read more

Hmm, I have mixed feelings about this place. The facility is really nice where both the exterior and interior gives off this naturesque and tranquil vibe. They have decorations as you walk in and it reminded me of a forest-like salon. I guess this is why they named their business "habitude." They checked me in and asked if I wanted a beverage. I asked for coffee. I probably waited approximately 2 minutes before I was fetched by the stylist. Not bad... Most places I've been to makes you wait more than 5-10 minutes. Never have I ever started so promptly before. The area is clean where you don't see hair all over the ground. Everything is kept at a pretty high/clean standard. My stylist seemed pretty nice and tried to make small talk the entire time I was there. I wanted to change up my "hairstyle" so I showed her pictures of what I wanted to get. She seemed confident that she could achieve the look I was hoping to have. Throughout the entire experience, I felt like she was doing quality work where she took her time coloring/foiling my hair. I didn't have to wait too long and she periodically checked on me while the colors were setting. When she washed my hair, she again seemed to take her time and made me feel really relaxed. The only issue I had was that after she blow dried my hair, it didn't turn out how I wanted. My hair color looked lightened but it didn't look like I got highlights in my hair. Instead, it looked like it was dyed brown, which I could have done myself. I decided to go to a professional so she could accomplish the look I wanted but instead, I got a look that I could have acquired from dying it a lighter brown color. I was really disappointed. I know I could have said something to ask her to lighten my highlight streaks but she had already spent so long on everything (wash and blow dry) that I felt bad inconveniencing her. I wish their salon offered a moment after unwrapping the foil to check on the color and ask the clients whether or not it was the right color. Instead, the "reveal" moment was at the very end. For $115, my hair looked a little lighter. I was rather disappointed. Don't get me wrong, they offered 5 star customer service. But I wish my stylist took the time to understand what I wanted rather than execute the look she "thought" I wanted. read more

Please note that this review is for their spa. I have never gotten my haircut here. After a somewhat stressful vacation in Hawaii (try being with a 2.5 year old at the time 24/7 with no spousal help) my husband treated me to a spa package. I got the "Under The Northern Rainforest" package which included an Essential Facial, Essential Massage, Spa Scalp Revitalizer, Hot Rocks Sauna, and a Spa Smoothie. I loved every minute of it. The gal that did my massage did such a good job. She took care of the knots that I have in my back and always made sure I was okay. My facial was really good. She took care of my problem areas and would let me know what she was going to do. I wish I had remembered both their names. It also helped that they had showers. After a massage you feel pretty gross so it was nice to be able to shower and use the Aveda products they had available in the showers. I'll definitely come back. It's a bit pricey but well worth it. PROS: massage, facial, Aveda products, good customer service CONS: the sale part at the end when you're ready to pay. they try and sell you products that your masseuse or whomever did your facial recommended. read more

I got a Groupon deal for a haircut and makeup touch-up for $35 or so. This location has a small parking lot for the guests, and the building has a very open and airy feel to it. As soon as I checked in, I was offered tea/coffee/water and changed into a robe. The tea was delicious, and the couch in the waiting area was super comfortable. Adriana was my stylist. She gave me a killer scalp massage in a comfortable shampoo chair. I loved the wooden styling counter/table. The haircut was good (not the best); the makeup touch-up was a nice service; all in all, I had a pretty pleasant experience at Habitude. (Online booking is a plus too!) However, as perfectly reasonable as the whole experience was, I thought it was a bit hollow. Everyone went through the motions and didn't make even a slight effort to elevate the quality of service. I am not requesting for special treatment. I'd like to connect with people I meet. It is a shame that I couldn't relate to anyone there as I like the salon itself. read more

I bought one of the LivingSocial deals for a Stress Relieving Conditioning treatment, haircut and style, brow wax and make-up application. I had a decent cut and style, she was great and helped revitalize my hair. No complaints on that. The make-up application was great. I loved Oliver, he's funny and had some great tips for my skin. The stress-relieving conditioning treatment, almost non-existent. It was a couple of minutes of pressure on my head, some oil sprayed onto my hair and a quick shampoo. My biggest complaint and reason for the low stars is the brow wax. My brows were massacred. Not the same length, no clean up of the area below the brow on the eye area, not evenly waxed in the middle and the trimming that was done was so uneven I have almost a bald spot in the middle of my brow. I will NEVER get a brow wax here again and I urge you to take caution if you decide to get your waxing done here. The package was a good deal, but for what I got, the $87 might have been better off spent elsewhere. read more

This review is only for their spa services - specifically their pregnancy massages. I have always had a great haircut here. I have gotten pregnancy massages at various places around Seattle. I have found Habitude Ballard's to be the most inconsistent. Overall, the space is lovely, the massages are fine for relieving backaches and tension, and the staff are generally nice. However, the staff seem very inexperienced at dealing with pregnant women, which is surprising since they offer a pregnancy message. I have done 2 pregnancy massages here in the last 2 months (mid and end of third trimester). The first masseuse told me their standard was to do pregnancy massages on the back with the back raised; the second person said their standard was to do pregnancy massages on the side with pillows, but all on one side instead of turning me over to do the other side. Both had different answers for whether pregnant women could drink the tea or use the sauna. The inconsistencies were very strange; most places in the area that offer pregnancy massages (Elaia, Ananya,...) are really consistent with their services and their responses to questions. I will go back here for hair services, and perhaps try their non-pregnancy massages. But I would be hesitant to go back for a pregnancy massage. read more

I had a really good experience at Habitude in Ballard. I'm going to keep this short and sweet, so here are the highlights! - I was greeted right when I walked in, both the downstairs and upstairs receptionists were really sweet and helpful. - I had a Groupon, which was really easy, and didn't have any issues with. - I had an Essential facial with Caitlin, who was very professional, and awesome at her job. - The worst part of the facial was when it was over. I had a great experience here. However, I only had a facial done by the kindest woman and it was my first facial ever. When I arrived, they offered me some delicious tea and their changing area/robe all seemed pretty clean. I thought she said her name was Karma, but I'm not seeing that name in other reviews, so now I'm thinking her name may have been Kayla? All I can say is... if she is beautiful, blond and the nicest, you'll have a great session. We chatted through the hour and she explained everything to me as she moved on to different steps. I loved the feeling of all the products she used on my face and her massage of my neck, shoulders and arms felt great. If I didn't like talking to her so much, I would have fallen asleep. All staff members I encountered were sweet and made sure I was comfortable while I was there. The experience was quite relaxing. It sounds like most of the poor experiences for other Yelpers was with their hair salon, but I'll go ahead and say I recommend getting a facial here! While up in Seattle over Christmas break, I was desperately in need of a hair cut and style. I found a deal on Groupon for a haircut and style as well as makeup or eyebrow waxing for $50.00. Now coming from San Francisco, the idea of even getting a simple hair cut and style for $50.00, let alone makeup included, blew me away. So of course, I bought it. It is a bigger place and can be a bit overwhelming with a lot of people moving around, but everyone was very kind. I checked in and they offered me tea as I waited for my stylist. After a short head massage (which reminds me - time for another massage!), they started with my hair. It was a decent cut, but as I am clueless, I prefer a very aggressive stylist who will basically take me in hand and tell me what style will look good on me. Sadly, most stylists I've met are more polite and wait for me to tell them what I want. But I don't know!!! After telling her about my last hair cut and what I thought might look good, she dutifully did her job and it looked decent. No massive changes and I didn't turn into a princess, but it was decent. It was quickly done as well. I then meandered back up to the front and was ready to pay the tip and head out. As I paid they realized they had forgotten about the second part of the deal - the make-up. Apparently I had been scheduled in for the make up when I checked in, but no one had informed me then and me being me, I had just forgotten. So I almost walked out without it. If they had not asked me if I wanted to tip the make-up artist, that would have been completely forgotten. After I had informed them that I had not met with any make-up artist and there was some frantic running around, I was informed that I had a make up appt in a few minutes and I could sit down and wait. After some more tea and magazines I proceeded to the make up part of the day. This was a bit more entertaining and enlightening for me. I am clueless with make up as well so it was very helpful to receive all the tips from the make up expert. She proceeded to pluck my eyebrows, layer mascara on me and smooth out my skin tone with liquid foundation. (apparently good in the winter - who knew?). I came out feeling very pretty for a girl's night out. My recommendations regarding this place - the deals are definitely worth it. However, if you book multiple services it can get confusing and you may have to remind them. read more

A great big HOLLER for the ease of buying Aveda items here! I'm an introvert who hates a hard sell--intensely. So when I go into one of the Aveda chain stores, I'm most uncomfortable (they pounce on you, probe you about your decision to choose the products you select, try to force you to drink their tea). None of this annoyance at Habitude! *insert happy dance* You want Aveda products? Just walk on in here and get 'em. No one is up your butt. Of course, if you need assistance or have questions, they are accommodating and helpful. They even give you a free pump when you buy a shampoo bottle. Nice!! One star off for parking, because the small lot taunts you with the possibility of finding a spot, only to have you drive in and discover Parking FAIL. read more

It had been a while, a long while, since I'd been to a salon. I have (or, I guess, should now say, had) long, straight hair and was happy with that. From time-to-time, I'd think I at least need to go get it tidied; but, then I'd have a good hair day and again put the idea to rest. A while back, though, I decided I really need to make a change. I'd been to Habitude in the past and had been happy with both the service and the results, so I decided to go there again. There are many pluses; -- On-line scheduling allows you to see which stylists are available at any given time and the price each charges for a cut/style. -- Friendly, welcoming, comfortable environment. -- My stylist took the time to really listen to what I wanted. When I told her I wanted to lose several inches, she made sure I knew what I was getting into. before she snipped a single strand. She made some suggestions on ways to give my hair a bit more style (i.e. not just long and straight) while still keeping it wash-and-wear (i.e. no spending 30 minutes each morning chained to a blow dryer), which is something I told her I wanted. -- She did not yell at me for coloring my own hair at home. -- She suggested "product" I might want to buy for giving body to my hair, etc., but did not do a hard sell. Once again, I am happy with both the service and the results. I left there with a lovely new style that got noticed and complimented. I have cut the time it takes to wash my hair in half. And, my new style is definitely "wash-and-wear." The only minus I can think of is, since I live in the south end of town, Ballard is a bit of a trek for me. But, I'll still be back. And, in a much shorter while this time. read more

I usually see Amanda for waxings because she is friendly, professional and great at what she does. My brows are always even and all my waxes are nearly painless (yes, even the brizillian). I feel totally at ease because of spa setting. Most recently I made an appointment to look awesome for a hot date. I had my nails done by Dawn and hair styled by Kermit. I thought I would get my brows done last minute, but ,of course, Amanda was booked. They were able to get me in with Heather down stairs in the "wax room". I was nervous to see someone new but, once again, I was very happy. Heather consulted the shape of both my brows (theyre uneven) and got exactly what i wanted. AMAZING!!! I left with great hair, great brows and Oliver the make up artist gave me a quick touch up. Result: Great beginning to a horrible date read more

I'm not a yelper but my recent experience at Habitude in Ballard was so excellent, I'm feeling compelled to yelp and it is all because of my stylist Justin. I have been growing out a pixie cut for a year and my hair was a wreck when I walked in. It has been 6 months since I had my hair colored and cut . I walked out of the salon with gorgeous color, another stylist commented on what a great job he did. The cut - it is the first time I have been able to wear my hair down in over 6 months. He did a fantastic job with what he had to work with. He takes the time to listen and it is obvious that he takes pride in his work. He isn't overly chatty and I appreciate that. Habitude at the Locks is a pretty good spa, but their hair salon is lackluster. The overall spa vibe is pretty good -- I like the dried fruit and almonds in the waiting area, and the decor is dark, quiet and relaxing. The shower area is nice, with lots of Aveda stuff to sample, and while Aveda's not as exclusive as you might expect to see in a high-end spa, it does smell good and so adds to the overall spa experience while you're there. I've had a lot of services at Habitude. Probably the best is the pedicure, particularly if you come with a group of friends and can reserve the whole pedicure room with the comfy chairs (no cheesy massage chairs here -- real chairs with real sinks for your feet -- and it's all kept very clean). The manicures are decently executed, as well. Their bikini waxing is good, or was when I used to go there regularly for them a few years ago (too far out of the way since I moved). The massage and body wrap I've had there were okay, but not the best I've ever had. They're good about letting you mix the scent for your oil, but she didn't ask much about where to target, and when I finally did mention the areas I needed to target, she really didn't focus on them. I do wish they wouldn't play insipid "new age" music in the spa, but then, that's just about any spa in the world, unfortunately. I've had negative experiences in the hair salon and wouldn't recommend it. I had my hair cut there last summer and the cut was really ho-hum. I have short hair that stylists usually love to do fun things with; this stylist gave me the most boring cut I've had in years after boasting about how she'd just come from working in New York City (guess they have run-of-the-mill stylists in NYC, too). I've had updos at Habitude twice for formal occasions and have gotten high helmet hair both times despite instructions otherwise. The last time, I walked in with a picture of Sienna Miller's tousled bob, and ended up with teased helmet hair about 15 minutes later despite protestations. I know it's called an "updo," but I didn't want my hair to actually go up. $80 is a lot of money for 15 minutes of work that I then had to redo before the wedding I was in. On the other hand, I had one of the best cuts in my life with Angela at the Habitude in Fremont. She left a few years ago, though. read more
