Call first to see when they made the Chile Rellenos. If they make them Thursday, getting some on Friday is ok. Ask for the cheese Chile Rellenos. Not the chicken or beef. They add the best cheese sauce on top and they are the best around. Not kidding. I try them every where. Not spicy hot either. The Lady who takes the order on the phone is so sweet. She is a keeper. We ordered 4 beef Burritos to go , 2 Al cart orders totaling $30. The manager refused to give chips and salsa with the order. Menu states that al cart chips and salsa not provided for orders under $10 . Our orders were $14 per order and the manager still refused and was arguing. Not very professional. I would like to give 2.5 stars. My husband and I went on a Sunday after church (12:30) they were not as busy as we expected. The service was just ok. Our waitress started out great, then once our food came we never saw her again. We tried to get other servers attention, but had no luck. Finally the hostess came by to ask if we needed anything. The atmosphere is nice and I like how the seating is arranged. The chips and salsa were the best part. It is good. I ordered from the Street tacos section. I ordered the taco Al Pastor, Taco de Asada, & Hard Shell chicken taco. The Al Pastor was not very good, the corn tortillas were very oily. The Taco de Asada was the best of the 3. It was grilled steak seasoned nicely. The Chicken tacos were full of shredded chicken, but there was no flavor. The prices are good and the portion sizes are good as well, but lacking flavor. Maybe if you are going for chips & salsa & a drink it would be a nice time, but the food is lacking. read more

It's probable just me. The handful of times I have been there it is always busy. Because it is busy, over the years have ventured back to try it again. Service and ambiance are good, but the food just never compares to other choices we have. Has always baffled me why it consistently stays busy. Me and my family stopped by when we where looking to try something new. It was great ! I ordered the Shrimp chimichanga and the veggies where cooked perfectly as well as the shrimp. Chips and salsa are served with the meal, they are good. The decor is wonderful, so much color !! Not much natural lighting but that can't be helped as the building is sandwich between two others. The staff was friendly and anytime a guest left they immediately started sanitizing and cleaning the area. Bathrooms where clean as well. My only issue was we were set wayy to close to other guests. It's a small places and there was an attempt to spread out people but we where right beside another full table. Lunch rushes are hard so I do not blame them. SCAMMER MANAGER: I've caught the manager (Carla) trying to scam me several times with the prices. She specifically will charge me different prices on different days for the same exact order. She is rude and acts like she is talking on the phone while this is going on. Then you get your receipt when you get charged more and it just shows the amount of money, not the food with the price next to it. Watch out for this. read more

The sign on the door says "No dogs inside," so I was sitting on the patio with my fur-baby, ordering and getting ready to eat. But a freak thunderstorm rolled in, and suddenly they were ushering us all inside, including my dog! they gave her water and were still helpful and cheerful as they helped us settle in for a heavy rain. Tried Hacienda Mexican Grill for the first time. Was greeted by a super nice staff and promptly seated. We really enjoyed their fresh chips and homemade salsa (the first test for any Mexican restaurant, right?). I tried the chicken enchilada dinner and it was delicious. The chicken filling was well seasoned and not chock full of onions and peppers like some restaurants. And the enchilada sauce was authentically mild and delicious. My mom tried the carne asada. While the skirt steak was deliciously seasoned, it was tough and a bit hard to chew. We would definitely go again! read more

Chips fresh and crisp but not under or over cooked. Salsa fresh and flavorful with nice pieces of onions and tomatoes and not puréed like most restaurants. I had Carne Asada -Charbroiled skirt steak smothered in grilled onions. Served with rice, beans, lettuce, tomato, sour cream, guacamole, and three tortillas - steak was cooked correctly but didn't have a lot of flavor. The onions on top were cooked perfectly. The beans had great flavor with right amount of cheese in top but like all places - way over spun into pure paste no bean pieces left. The rice was perfect - hot, with good flavor and nice and moist - not dried out. Guacamole had good flavor but wasn't cold enough - was room temperature/slightly warm. Might have been because it was in the side and could have set under heat lamp. Tortillas were fresh and hot and soft not hard and dry. My wife had strawberry margarita and said it was perfect- wasn't weak - she could taste the tequila and yet the strawberry at same time. She also had Taco Salad - Choice of beef or chicken taco salad topped with lettuce, sour cream, guacamole, tomato, and shredded cheese - She said the lettuce was fresh and not wilted and tortilla bowl was crispy but not over cooked or tasted greasy. The beef had good flavor and didn't appear to be oily or greasy which usually means better quality groubWe will definitely be back to try more on the menu. read more

I am a big Mexican food fan, so I am always looking for a good alternative to my favorites. Multiple people have recommended Hacienda to me, so I finally broke down and drove over to try it out. I arrived about 4:00 on a Saturday afternoon, was seated immediately. We were one of two groups eating. So it was a pretty quiet meal. Upon arrival we were greeted with a very large menu, anyone could find something they like. Next came the chips and salsa with a side of queso. The salsa was some of the best salsa I have had in Birmingham. Full of cilantro and white onion, tons of flavor and just the right amount of heat. The queso wasn't a let down either, very spicy. I definitely recommend it. For my entree I went with a combination dinner which included, two beef enchiladas and a chicken quesadilla. It was fine, nothing wrong with it but just wasn't anything special. If I do make it back i would try something more adventurous. All in all it was good, if I lived closer I would probably be picking up chips and salsa on the regular. If you do live in the area, try it out! read more

You will not find a friendlier place in town. My family comes here weekly, and the food is delicious, the service is fast, and the atmosphere is so fun. You can bring your dogs to sit on the patio. Live music is always good. I recommend the following: steak street taco, pico de gallo, skinny margaritas, and the table side guacamole are all delicious! Eh, it's ok. It wasn't awful, just ok. It's a basic Mexican restaurant, but it looks like they do some items better than other items. So probably a little inconsistent in quality. BUT, if you live on that side of town and you don't want to drive far, it definitely satisfies your chips and salsa craving. Chips are good, a little thicker than normal and salsa is chunky and tasty. The white cheese dip is the thin consistency, no peppers or any kind of spices. I got the beef enchiladas dinner, which came with two enchiladas, rice, refried beans and tomato, sour cream and lettuce. I'm not a fan of the beans and the rice was dry and flavorless. The beef had an ok taste, but it was also dry. I was with a larger group and most of them liked their meals. So I think it just depends on what you get. The steak quesadilla and the shrimp quesadilla both looked good and my friends said they were tasty. The chicken fingers are HUGE and actually looked pretty good. Overall, a decent spot, but nothing special or different than any other neighborhood Mexican restaurant. read more

I called in an order to pick up. It was a shredded chicken quesadilla and an 8oz. cheese dip. Unfortunately, the quesadilla wasn't good. The chicken looked and tasted like canned shredded chicken. I'm 98% sure it was. It was made with a small, taco size tortilla. A Taco Bell chicken quesadilla taste better than this and is made with a large tortilla. I am really, really surprised by the reviews Hacienda Mexican grill. Either I'm crazy, everybody else is crazy, or my husband and I just got really, really lucky on the night we went? We got the groupon and I, too, expected it to be not-so-great. usually when places do groupons it's because they're new--Hacienda is not-- or seriously struggling to get business. With a discount groupon was running, we pay $19.50 for queso, 2 entrees, and 2 margaritas before tip - AMAZING. I really didn't expect the food to be awesome, but it's hard to do really BAD fajitas. It was quiet when we went (around 5:00 on a Saturday) and the server was fast and efficient. My husband really liked his entree (chicken quesadilla dinner) and I got the chicken fajitas. The tortillas were good, the fajitas were good and all the fixings it came with were great. Honestly y'all, the salsa blew me away. It was some of the best salsa I've had from any tex-mex restaurant. Really good cilantro and onions in it and I loved it. The blended margaritas were super yummy (I like 'em sweet) but they weren't lightweight either -- I definitely felt tipsy when I stood up to leave! The place is tex-mex, so I don't expect superb autentico mexicano food, although I did find it interesting they served "taco-truck style tacos". But really, I would come here again. Since I've only visited once, perhaps they will fail in consistently delivering, but that one night it was delicious. I'd drive from Alabaster just to go here, even without the groupon. It was better tex-mex and salsa than I've gotten from Habaneros (for SURE), Iguana grill, Cozumel, Del Toro, and Rosie's cantina in Huntsville. read more

I won't lie, this place scared me a bit. It was in a strip mall and there weren't many people there on a Saturday evening around 5-5:30. However, we decided to go on in and give it a try. The service was fast, as is typical in Mexican restaurants. The food was actually quite good. The salsa was pretty tasty and the chips didn't seem stale. The chimichanga that I had was also quite good. The chicken was flavorful as was the rice (if a bit dry). The price was very good, the food was good and the service was great. I'll definitely head back over there if I'm in the area. Don't be afraid if you drive by there, go in and try it out! read more

My friend and I tried Hacienda because I found a killer deal on a Groupon and Mexican is my favorite type of food... Hacienda was nothing unique, but I loved everything I tried and my friend and I had a blast. The decor was colorful and there were multiple rooms for seating. The waiter was very informative and didn't mind running to the kitchen for more info when he didn't know the answer. I got the shrimp fajitas and they were on point. An okay Tex-Mex restaurant is my description of Hacienda. The chips and salsa as well as the main dishes are good. The technique here, as with many Tex-Mex restaurants, is to rely on fat and salt for the flavor rather than really fresh extremely well prepared courses that a place like El Barrio does. That said, this is a pretty good place to eat and the sales tax is only 5% which always appeals to me. Service is very good, decor is mediocre Mexican style. One problem we have in Birmingham is the proliferation of Mexican Resurants. Hacienda fails to separate itself from the pack in any way. They have the standard boring menu of "Mexican" dishes. I tried the soft taco, guac salad, and some fried meat roll thing. All editable but nothing great about them We had a large group so a pitcher of their house margaritas were ordered. They were by far the most watered down margaritas I've ever had. If you're in a hurry and just want cheap simple Mexican food this just like any other pop up Mexican store it town if fine. Loved this place! Yes, it's in a strip mall...but it was such great food and great service and great margaritas! I'll be honest...I wasn't expecting much. But everything I had (and everything the rest of my family had) was wonderful! First...the margaritas were fresh and didn't taste like a nasty mix--there was actually lime juice pulp in there--yay! All I had were margaritas, guacamole and bean dip. Margaritas: Delish! Only $2.50 for happy hour, which starts at 2pm! Generous size and not too sweet or too sour - they use a higher quality mix. The could stand to get actual margarita salt, but for $2.50, not about to complain. Guac: Very good! I'm visiting from southern california and I always use guac quality as my benchmark. Very creamy and fresh with detectable onion and cilantro - authentic. Bean dip - Okay, this wasn't very authentic. It's enough to share between 3 or 4 people and is basically the house refried beans covered in creamy melted white cheese. Tasty! Service in early afternoon was attentive. Judging by the menu offerings, this is one of the more authentic Mexican places around. Items like whole fried fish and steak prepared south of the border style are things you don't find at the average mexican joint. Location is not great but it makes for convenient neighborhood dining without the fuss of a busier center. Remember, you only get two free baskets of chips per table! read more

Had the WORST meal and service ever! Chicken in the chimichanga was canned-entire thing was probably frozen. The tortilla was doughy and not crisp at all.
