Hands-Down the Best Mexican in Birmingham! After locals kept steering me toward disappointing spots, I finally discovered Acapulco on my own and I've been hooked ever since. It's the clear winner for overall Mexican food in the area. Their birria tacos are phenomenal, the drinks are delicious and refreshing, and the sauces actually have real flavor, none of that overly thick, bland stuff you get everywhere else. They nail the meat every time: perfectly cooked, tender, and seasoned so well you don't get any of that "gamey" or off taste some places have. It's consistently solid across the board. They also have kind workers and the ambiance overall is good. Spacious enough for some privacy although I don't like some of their seating chairs...the benches that are connected between you and someone else behind you. A few times I had customers behind me moving a whole lot and it wasn't very pleasant. Honorable mention for tacos specifically: Mezon food truck (another gem I had to find independently). Lesson learned the hard way, don't trust most Birmingham recommendations; they've let me down too many times. Acapulco is worth every visit. read more

Two Stars for the 2 Pacifico beers I had. I didn't like ANYTHING else about this visit. Slow service and bad food! The chips & salsa were decent. The girl that was eventually my server was on her phone the entire time before coming to take my order. I ordered the mojarra frita dish. The fish was bland and flavorless. I didn't even finish half of it! It came with some side salad and I asked for fries too. Thank God I added fries since everything else was awful! The fries were good. Met some friends for Cinco de mayo. I was shocked that there were no food specials. The small lime margs were $5. But they were DELISH and packed a punch. I had the porkchops at one of the sister locations and loved them. So I tried them today... they had decent flavor but were dry and tough. The rice and beans didn't miss and neither did the salsa. Yummy! I actually come by almost weekly to get salsa to go instead of buying it at the store. I did just that while I was there. I didn't hear anyone rave over the food today but also didn't hear any complaints. The service was good despite the place being super packed! There is plenty of parking as this restaurant is in the corner of a big shopping strip. We were seated quickly and chips and salsa arrive at our table within 30 seconds. It did take our server about 10 minutes to get to us for our drink orders, however. By that time, we knew what we wanted for our meals and ordered accordingly. The water and soda cups are HUGE. I also ordered the chorizo queso. It was about $4-5 for a small bowl and $12 for a large. Absolutely delicious! But be mindful if you have high blood pressure. The salt is salting! We made it in time for their lunch specials. I was surprised that they have them on the weekends, but sure enough they did! I got the #14 which is a spinach enchilada, a beef taco and a pork tamale. The pollo asado was great. The chicken breast and thigh were tender, and the adobo seasoning was very savory. The dish came with rice, beans, and tortillas (and chips and salsa). Great portions too. This was exactly what I was hoping to get - something that was a little more traditional and authentic than Americanized Mexican food (which I like too, but which you can get anywhere). I've passed by here a million times over the years (I grocery shop at Mediterranean 2 doors down) and never thought to try it out. But I realized last week, that of all the Mexican restaurants in that area, that one has a constant draw of Latino folks, so you know the deal then. My wife wanted to try Sabor Latino up the way by Office Depot but I've passed through there a bunch of times too and I ain't never seen anybody going or coming out of there. The same for that big Mexican restaurant at the end of the lot, so Acapulco was the deal. Rolling up on it and going through the door, I smelled the grilled seafoods, cilantro, steaks, beans. I knew it was right. Staff was attentive and asked for drink orders. I ended up with Camarones Acapulco (stewed shrimp and veggies over mexican rice) and a Modelo Negra. The shrimp was cooked just right and the seasoning was on point with the bell peppers, onions and the tomato based rice. My lady's grilled shrimp fajita was cooked right but no seasoning whatsoever. When the server came and asked how it was, I told her about my lady's bland plate but she had nothing to say...no offer to have the cook hook it up. Besides that, everything was proper. Came here for lunch. Really brought and colorful interior. The menu is extensive. It was tough to decide what to get. I ordered the spicy burrito. It was definitely spicy! Our plates were huge. Overpriced and not good service. My husband and I ate here for LUNCH and our bill was $75.00. We got a margarita a piece (that was supposed to be on happy hour), queso, and two lunch specials. The food was mediocre at best, especially for the price. A few months later, I visited with my mom for margaritas and queso and the service was awful. I had a great taco salad. Stopped by and got curbside to go. I ordered via the phone they came out and took my payment and then my food is ready in 10 minutes. I ordered a shrimp taco salad with extra salsa. The shrimp was juicy and not over cooked at all the shell was amazing it was the best one I've had in a long time. It is a big place, so for the most part, you don't have to wait. Also, the service is very good! The only complaint is that you only get one free basket of chips. FALSE ADVERTISING AND PRICING! The online menu pricing is incorrect. I ordered food to go twice here a few weeks apart. I went to their website and ordered. When I went to pick up my order they charged me more than the pricing on the menu on line. I asked to speak to the manager Miguel Hueramo but he was not there. I asked if the receptionist who give me his number. She called him and she told me that I could pay the lower price that is online now but to never come back. I only pointed out that their online prices were not correct. The manager Miguel Hueramo refused to speak to me and reacted by asking me to never come back. I told them their online prices are not current and they did not do anything g about it. They are falsely advertising with the wrong prices. It should have been an easy fix and they should be thankful that I pointed out the discrepancy but that is not what happened. This is really the only Mexican restaurant I will eat at, prices are very reasonable and the food is definitely delicious!

Sad to say this place was not the best. I had many friends recommend this place for some great authentic Mexican food, and I would say it was very basic. Mainly I had an issue with the ants on the wall and crawling onto our table.. I alerted our waitress, but I do not think she cared. I ordered a chicken chimichanga meal, and it was decent. It came with guacamole salad, rice, and beans. I substituted my beans for extra rice. The food was served very hot and tasted good. The service was a little slow, but it was a busy time of the week so I was okay waiting. The food was served very hot and tasted good. I have been to Acapulco several times. And I will be back again several times. It is very convenient to where I live and they have great specials. And honestly if you go around town to your "typical cheap (delicious) Americanized" Mexican restaurant, it is one of the better ones in Birmingham. And by that, I hope you know what I mean. Pretty much the same menu everywhere, but is very good in its own right. Everything is good, but nothing is exceptional. I would normally give them 3 1/2 stars and round down. But since I LOVE the staff and their friendliness, I have to round up on this one. Wednesday night offers a BOGO on combination plates. And for what is already a lot of food, this is especially cheap. All of their menu items I have had have NEVER been bad. Nothing exceptional I can recommend. But if you stick with you preferences, you can't go wrong. The only reason I say that is because I have had plenty of bad experiences in these types of restaurants around Birmingham. Their drink prices are very reasonable. But if you are going for a margarita, get the house special. It is a little more and only comes on the rocks. Salsa is good that have no onion taste like most. Like the other reviews mention, they charge extra for salsa. What make its worse, they don't fill the bowl to the very top and keeps it halfway full intentional to make you pay for a second order of salsa. Acapulco's has the best Camarones a La Diabla in town! It's full of flavor and has the perfect spice level. Must say that I truly miss the black beans they once had. Unfortunately, others in the area preferred the refried beans (ugh).. but they do still have the black beans at their other location, Amigo's, in Hoover on Lorna. First time I've been here. Was a great meal, a slight cut above others I've been to in town. I had the steak soft tacos with rice and beans. The steak was marinated in a smokey marinade and the wraps were soft and warm. My buddy had the chicken nachos. He was a little disappointed with the amount of chicken in it. The house salsa was delicious, had some nice heat to it. The environment was laid back, nothing out of the ordinary in the Mexican restaurant world. After a meeting that ran late, we drove around Homewood around 8:45 looking for a place to eat that stayed open after nine. Acapulco was open until 9:30, which gave us just enough time to eat without driving the staff crazy. There are lots of good things to report... The server was nice, the margaritas were good, the food came out fast and it all tasted great. Now, there's one great thing to report... As we paid, it seemed a little bit pricey, but not much more than normal. As we walked through the parking lot, the guy that had been working the register came running out after us. Apparently we had been over charged. It would have been so easy for him to let us go in to the night without a clue. He brought us back inside, explained the mistake, apologized, and gave me a cash refund. This kind of service and kindness is hard to come by.
