A very charming shop, staff was very friendly!! Cannolis are absolutely huge and filled to order. Ours were a bit inconsistently chocolate chip'ed with some having chips at the ends and some not (ordered 8) I believe you can also get pistachio, which we would've loved but couldn't really understand our server well enough if perhaps she offered (not sure if she did) Also got mini carrot cakes and napoleons, both great. A three pack of scones (also large, not very sweet and pretty dense style but with a nice crumb to them) Lastly, got an amazing raspberry tres leches and a dulce de leche cake slice. A great find! So far, I have had their scones (raisin, chocolate chip, plain), cheese sweet roll, pecan danish, tiramisu and cookies and plan on trying more of all the different baked goods they offer. It's been a long time since I was in a bakery with such a variety of goods that taste so good. Most of the bakeries I've been to have goods that look delicious but taste disappointing. This place is awesome! My sister is with her husband at Hackensack Medical Center. He had a stem-cell transplant and she is with him every day. Today is her birthday and she was unable to spend it with the rest of the family. She mentioned to us on Facetime that she wanted to leave the hospital and get herself a cake. When we heard this, we kept speaking with her on the phone and called around. Hackensack Pastry took credit cards and would deliver -- little miracles happen every day. I spoke with Madelaine who was awesome! She had the cake delivered within half an hour and my sister was extremely happy. Not only did the cake come out completely wrong in color and design. The lettering on the cake looked like it was rushed and smeared. Another reviewer said that the place is strange and looks a little barren. I'd describe it as unique. It does look barren for a bakery, but you know that everything is fresh. They don't have a lot of items, but what they have is the best. I go there specifically for their cannolis which are the best in the world. And they make them in front of you while you wait. I am truly addicted to them. The owner and the other people there are all very friendly. They do have a weird schedule but I have memorized it. They are open from November to New Year's and then close for the winter til around Mother's Day. They stay open til about Labor Day except for a week in August and then close til November. They have some weird hours, so far I have seen them closed a few times especially on Mondays I believe they are also cash only but not really sure When you walk in they have barely anything on their shelves. To the right - homemade italian ices and ice cream and even spomoni. To the left - a small fridge almost empty with top shelf usually being , a chocolate cake, mini cream puffs and if we are lucky large cream puffs. 2nd shelf, eclairs, they have one with choco frosting and one plain, then a rum custard baba looking cake..... then a huge metal bowl of cannoli cream which I would love to dip my face into lol The girl fills all cannoli's by hand and then adds the nuts and powdered sugar.. mmmmmmmmmmm The cannolis are probably the best I have ever had in my life and trust me I have had many before..... The cream puff looks dry but it's super moist and the custard OMG to die for..... The center has italian cookies and biscuits....none of my favs but still yummy i'm sure.... They changed owners. I wasn't aware of this until after I tried a piece of the cake. As soon as I took the first bite I knew it wasn't the same recipe. I called and confirmed and the business has officially changed hands. My family loved their Rum soaked cannoli cake. The cake we got was ridiculously sweet with almost no rum flavor. My guess would be they switched rum to save money. A cheaper rum would explain the weak rum flavor, and would possibly explain the overly-sweet issue other reviewers have complained about, as Rum is extremely sugary when broken down. Hackensack Pastry Shop was habitually closed certain times of the year bc the owners were elderly and constantly taking vacation/time off. As a faithful patron I actually knew the times of the seasons/year they would close. They had an outstanding product and it was worth going in when they were open. The new owners are not sticking to the recipes. When I callled to inquire about the cake ( I didn't tell them how bad it was I just asked if the same people were running it) I was told there were new owners but they had purchased all the recipes and were trained how to make them. If that's even true, then my guess would be they're cutting corners to save money because you can simply tell they're turning out an inferior product. I was hoping to give them a second chance, but several of my relatives have been stopping in now that the store is open more frequently.
