I have been debating whether to give this review of Hackney's on Harms three or four stars for this visit. After much thought, I'd settled on four. We went on July 4th - we made reservations using their website. The experience of booking reservations seemed easy. There were limited hours available, and we settled on 5:15 since the only time after that was 8 PM, and that was too late. We had hoped for a time between 5:30 and 6:30, but not available. We arrived a little early and were seated immediately - there were few other patrons there and lots of tables open. The server and the service was great. We had six in our party and ordered a variety of things starting with an onions loaf. Wow - that was good. I appreciate that they don't salt it, or add very little salt. This way, we were able to salt it to our tastes. I ordered 1/2 rack of ribs which comes with fries and cole slaw. Others at the table had the Rachel (on the specials menu), Grown-up Grilled Cheese, the Chicken Wrap, The Hack Smash(burger), and Fish and Chips. As mentioned earlier, the onion loaf was quite good. Everyone said their meals were great. The ribs were good but way too saucy for me. I wish I had asked for the sauce on the side - but that is my opinion and others may like ribs with an abundance of BBQ sauce. It was about this time I realized it was almost 6:30 and there were many, many tables open. So, I'm a little disappointed we were not able to find a different time for our reservation. Clearly, they had tables available. For desert, the table shared the bread pudding. Warning - it comes very hot so don't dive into it... However, and I didn't have any, everyone raved about how good it was. Thanks to Hackney's for another great experience. read more

Like many, I've been going to both Hackneys on Harms and Lake since 1979. It's predictably reliable and casual, and the food is always satisfying. I'm very glad that a period of years ago the coleslaw recipe changed and was icky and then they must have gone back to the original recipe around 10(?) years ago. On our most recent occasion, we did notice the original burger was not quite what it used to be. The service is always stellar and we will be returning! read more

Been going to Hackneys on Harms since the 1960's, we recently went back after moving out of state and were shocked at how disgusting the inside has become. The men's bathroom smelled like a truck stop that hadn't been cleaned in months. The grease on the carpet has been worn down to a slick and smelly surface. And please don't look up at the ceiling!! around all the vents the tiles were black. obviously the emphasis is on saving every dime and not putting anything back into the business. makes you wonder how clean the kitchen was !!!!! It's our first time here. Quickly seated, casual dining. The atmosphere has some 80s music, darker ambiance, not crowded but a fair amount of people. The wait staff was friendly and responsive. Our family rates the food: French dip #1: 5 stars (kid vote) French dip #2: 4 stars (my vote) Hackney burger: 3.5 stars (kid vote) Chicken Caesar salad: 3.5 stars (kid says it was a little spicy) Turkey BLT: 4 stars (adult vote) Fried onion appetizer: 3.5 stars (2 out of 5 people felt it needed some kind of seasoning, like truffle salt) Overall nice experience! This was the first time I've been to Hackneys in quite a few years, but we wanted to eat in the plastic igloos of the holiday for a some festive family fun. The dome itself was fun and decorated inside do a cozy feel, but we were a bit cold even though they do have two heaters going so we are with coats on. There were 6 of us, so it was also a little tight but it was about the experience, so we weren't too worried about that. As for the food, we ordered the onion loaf and potato skins that were both good just as they were in the past, but I do wish there was a sauce with onion loaf. Almost everyone got a burger of some sort, something they are known for, but I got the Hackney smash which is a slightly smaller patty and there are two. I wanted that to be better fo something called a smash burger it really wasn't. It didn't taste bad, but was definitely not a smash burger. Their fries are thin and crispy and I also ordered a cup of chili which was the best surprise of the night. It was meaty with a spicy back and came with all the extras on the side really tasty. Our waitress was extremely nice and attentive for the most part considering she had to come from the main restaurant to serve us, but at the end of the evening I'm pretty sure she forgot about us, but we sat in the dome for 15-20 minutes after we were done eating waiting for the check. My wife had to go outside and get someone. If I'm being honest that drops it down to more like a 3 and half stars, but overall everything else was very good so. This place is a classic midwestern Irish pub - and it shouldn't be expected to be anything more. The minute you walk in, you'll be welcomed with a classic hearty warm meal, friendly service, and fair prices. This place is not and never will be fine dining, new American, or elevated pub fair - and you shouldn't expect it to be. The allure is this place is classic and untouched, a true dive in the best of ways. They pour a great Guinness, the onion bricks are unmatched, and I always recommend the patty melt. Legendary spot with two locations, one on Harms (which is the original, I think) and another slightly fancier one on Lake. It's a local bar and burger joint. Nothing super fancy (although the menu is definitely more than burgers and includes some entrees). Well known for its onion loaf, which is as delicious as it is artery clogging...and definitely worth a try. Usually full of locals and often regulars at the bar. Lovely outside terrace during the summers which I have visited with friends and family before -- it, too, has the same warm, neighborhood, family vibe that the indoor experience does. Again, nothing fancy, but sometimes when you want a burger and a beer, it's just what the proverbial doctor ordered. read more

This was our third year eating in the Igloo, which is always a fun family experience However, we did notice that this was also the 3rd year that they did NOT bring more french fries when we asked. They advertise unlimited french fries. They bring an average size plate of fries, and every year we have requested another plate, and they have not one time brought it. I wonder if they "forget" on purpose. When we mention it, they always apologize but still do NOT bring another plate to make up for "forgetting". Disappointing. I've been coming here since I moved to the area when I was 12. I've never had a bad meal and the service is usually very good. The core menu is still there, but I'm glad they have kept up with changing tastes and offer a lighter fare. The Turkey Sandwich is the finest at any restaurant that I have tried. Of course, an onion loaf is always ordered and the burgers are still head and shoulders above other similar places. In nicer weather the terrace under the trees is a great place to enjoy one's meal. read more

I have read some best of articles on the internet that mention them and decided to try them out while on a trip to the area. I ate there with my wife and son. My son and I ordered patty melts and thought they were excellent. My wife ordered the Reuben and said it was one of the best she has ever had. This is an old school restaurant located a little off the main path but definitely worth the trip. read more

My friend and I have met at Hackneys on Harms for the last fifteen years at least. I will usually get a 4oz Hackney burger and they get the French dip. Today we started with the Original French fried onions (1/2 brick) which was still more than we can eat but it's a fun tangled mess of thinly sliced deep fried onions stacked tall. They got the French dip again and I went for the Hackney burger (8oz) with cheddar cheese without the bun. It came on a platter with a tomato slice and iceberg lettuce and I requested grilled onion. I forgot to take pics because we were busy catching up but the meals come with fries for the table (unlimited) which we never get more of because there's no need. Our food was good as always. During nice weather the patio is delightful with a nice breeze blowing and the umbrellas blocking most of the end-of-summer sun. It's almost like eating on your neighbor's patio because this is a residential neighborhood and it's pretty quiet and there's pretty flowering baskets. Stick with the classics and you can't go wrong. I hope my friend and I can continue to meet here for many more times in the future. read more

This is a 4.5!! I love old school and I love quality burgers. Hackney's on Harms is a historical institution. Cute outside accommodations, but I don't like eating outside. In lieu, I chose a booth in the bar. Tap beer selection was nice. The service was attentive, polite and professional. Now to the food. We ordered a quarter order of the famous fried onion strings. Absolutely delicious. We both had the Hackney Burger, and the pictures say it all, perfect medium rare. The dark rye bread is a different take, but I'd take a bun next time. The fries are bottomless and hot/fresh. Cole slaw was also a different take. I liked it and the wife did not. Bonus slaw for me!! The only thing needed is it may need a little update. Alas, but then it wouldn't be the same historically correct landmark. Definitely worth a try and keep up the good work at this historical gem. read more

My partner and I got horrible food poisoning from this restaurant. We went here last night and ordered the brisket and French dip sandwiches (thought meat seemed to be the same type on both). They tasted fine, but by early morning we both felt very ill. We assume it was the meat or horseradish sauce since we both ate the same things. Maybe the staff needs to be re-trained on food safety? There's a lot of teens on staff. Disappointed as this place had a really nice outdoor setting, but we won't be returning after this experience. read more

I have been to both locations, Harms and Glenview Road. The location on Harms Road by far beats the other location. It is a warmer atmosphere, staff are more relaxed, and they make a great Whiskey Sour. Food is actually better here. read more

Hackneys has been a favorite of our 7-year-old daughters since she was diagnosed with celiac several years ago, mostly due to having a dedicated fryer for their French fries. I'm giving 4 stars specifically for the igloo experience. It's incredibly charming, surprisingly warm, and so fun to do around the holidays with family. That being said, the food is very lackluster and incredibly under-seasoned- make sure you have salt and pepper on the table! I stuck with a shrimp cocktail because the food was so bland. What has happened to this place? Stopped in Friday with a friend. She had a salad. Can't sc rew up a salad. I had the adult cheese sandwich. $15 on the menu. Got my bill I was charged $19. And $5.45 for a Mich Ultra. That's insane. Wasn't planning on going back but another friend said let's go to Hackneys on Sunday. Okay I'll give it another try. Ordered the French dip. Barely any beef. Cole slaw is mush. She had some chicken sandwich that she said was okay. Then came the bill. Good God!!!! $11 for a pint of Guinness! Needless to say Im done. We sat outside today if that matters The waiter we had I feel ignored us or didn't bother even checking on us. Took 15 minutes for a Diet Coke even. The food was good the onion string appetizer is the best! My hackney burger was good. However my mom's patty melt rye bread wasn't crispy. The outside is lively and nice. Would have at least appreciated a "thank you for your patience, our kitchen is backed up". But we were just waiting with no explanation. THAT CHEESEBURGER!!! OMG, so good. Juicy, delicious, and I LOVE that it's on rye bread. Perfectly cooked and just fantastic. Hackneysburger on rye, medium rare, cheddar cheese. PERFECT. The Onion Loaf thing - I was not a fan, it tasted greasy to me. However, my boyfriend absolutely went nuts for it, so your mileage may vary! We were there on a day that was rainy, but I still wanted to sit out side. No problem! There's a big awning overhang at the bar. Just perfect sitting outside when it's lightly dripping rain. All of the Hackney's family restaurants are fantastic and provide the same high-quality customer service and food. Tonight we went to Hackney's on Harms and sat in the covid-19 safe and winter weather safe igloos! It is very strongly recommended that you call in advance to reserve an igloo and you should know that the igloos are only reservable into our blocks so they can serve more families. They are nice and toasty warm and very enjoyable. As per usual, I had a Hackney Burger. Tonight I had bacon and cheddar. The bacon was overly well done and crispy crumbly, not very good. The burger was perfectly medium-rare and closer to rare. As well, they had run out of pretzel rolls and so we had a dark rye bread, which was fine. We were disappointed in the iceberg lettuce and barely orange tomato. I think Hackney's could have done better with a nice Leaf of leaf lettuce and a more ripe tomato. The bottomless french fries were good as always. The server brought my Johnnie Walker Black with no ice although I requested some ice. It wasn't a big deal but it was noticed. I think today was an anomaly because usually Hackney's is so much more on top of their food game. I will be back, of course, because 45 years as a customer has shown me that Hackney's has been top notch 97% of the time! read more

Server was so sweet but my husband's ask for candles for my birthday dessert was ignored twice, the drink I ordered was made completely wrong, the fish was soggy and the potatoes were cold and greasy. I did message the owners before posting here and heard nothing. I loved this restaurant and have been going at least 1-2 a year for 8 years and loved it. Just a bummer. read more

So my family wanted to try this "outdoor igloo" dine in experience that they mentioned that they were doing. Since it's January and there aren't too many places you can dine out, we thought we would test this. As you can see by the picture, each group gets their own little igloo in the garden where the server hands drinks and food through a flap. We went at night so it was very cozy and slightly romantic looking . We were a little concerned on the temperature inside, but they put enough heaters inside to make it warm. If still chilly, they had blankets. I took my coat off, but kept my hat on (I was wearing an ugly sweater). As for the the food, it was excellent. They are still solid on their fried onions and burgers. My mom got spicy fried shrimp which was excellent and huge! The only downside was there was a few mixups in the cooking of the burgers and the portions seemed a little smaller than usual. It wasn't a dealbreaker for us and the server hinted that she could fix the mistakes (not enough fries/onions). It also appeared that our server was having a little trouble with the ice around our igloo. Not her fault, but they might have been able to salt it better for her. The weather was ok tonight, but it might be troublesome if it gets colder or more snow. Still, I would highly recommend coming out to the igloos during these times. It's nice to support a local business and this is the original deal. It's well worth the trip and we will be back with the rest of our family! read more
