Happy Hour Drink Review! I visited for happy hour for a pre-dinner drink. Jackman & Co's happy hour has three of their popular cocktails on special as well as beer, wine, and a couple of bites. When entering, the bar area is on the left and the main dining area on the right. The bar area is a little darker in finishes with the center bar truly as the focal point. The main dining area is lighter and brighter with tons of natural light. For drinks, I got the Jackman Old Fashioned. This was well balanced but I didn't get much of the coffee note while enjoying. My husband got A Modern Cure which was tart in the right way. I loved the glassware each drink was served in and the bartenders were great at making suggestions for Jackman's menu as well as their new sister restaurant Zenzi Den's menu. Overall, this was a great happy hour spot and I would certainly come back to try some of their food! read more

This was our first visit here and it was on a Sunday night to celebrate Father's Day. We came for the earliest reservation, which was 4:30 PM. Luckily, I did make reservations weeks in advance because I was very surprised to see this place. Fill up even at this early bird dinner time. Please note parking around here. It's pretty tricky even on a Sunday. If you could find street parking, it's free with no time limit limitation however they do also offer valet. The menu has changed since they originally opened probably a year or so ago. Which is also great to see. We did order two appetizers, three entrées and one dessert to share amongst three people. Everything was super fresh and super delicious. We are definitely coming back here. We honestly did not expect it to be this great but it truly was impressive. What made the night even more memorable and fantastic was the incredible service from Michael D. Michael D needs to train other servers. He is absolutely on point and speaks and behaves like a real veteran in the hospitality business. I've never been overly impressed by ballyhoo hospitality, however, this is significantly different and they did something very right here. As I expected, with the proliferation of new restaurants in Glenview, Jackman and Company has updated and simplified its menu in an apparent attempt to make it a little bit more accessible. Surprised and a little disappointed that my two favorite dishes are now gone... Nonetheless, had a very nice experience and dinner at the bar this evening. My wife had a salad, and I had the short rib with roti. Guessing that is meant to replace the unfortunate loss of the duck confit tacos! read more

We visited for a birthday celebration and had a solid experience overall! We started with the artichoke dip; while it was very flavorful, the portion was quite small, a bit too salty, and didn't come with enough chips (though we easily ordered more). For mains, the salmon was cooked to absolute perfection--juicy and not overdone at all--and the smashed burger was wonderfully juicy and paired great with the waffle fries. Tip: Happy hour runs Monday-Friday from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM, but it's strictly bar-seating only. If you are celebrating a birthday, your dessert is complimentary! It was surprisingly crowded on a weekday night so we sat at the bar. For my drink I got a spicy margarita and it was really good--very refreshing with a kick. For appetizers, we got the sesame rolls, and they were super soft and fresh. I also tried bacon wrapped dates for the first time (so I have nothing to compare these to), and they were alright but I thought the cheese was sort of overpowering. For food, I got the brick chicken and it came with a side of crispy cottage potatoes. The chicken with the garlic thyme jus went well together, and the potatoes were so crispy and delicious. The sticky date cake almost tasted like pumpkin bread because of the spices I was tasting. Overall the food was good, but I wasn't blown away by anything I ordered. Although our server was really friendly and helpful, I felt that the service was lacking and it took awhile to be checked on to order our drinks and food, but maybe they think it's best to just leave customers alone and allow them to take their time. He also gave us our check without asking if we wanted dessert or anything else. He apologized and made sure to ask if there was anything else we needed before we left which I appreciated. read more

I sat at the corner of the bar for my first visit to Jackman & Co. and had the pleasure of meeting the bartender, Matt. Matt was attentive and made an effort to make the right drink, based on my description of things I like and then paired my dinner with the right wine. I ordered the Belgian Style Mussels for an appetizer and they were spot-on delicious. Probably the best I've ever had. The flavors were perfect. For my main course I had the Alaskan Halibut and I must say that it was cooked perfectly. The bar was the perfect place to sit in relative silence and just enjoy a dinner out by myself. The staff was attentive but not bothersome and everyone was truly very kind and it was a pleasant place to hangout. I definitely recommend Jackman & Co if you're in the Chicago area. I enjoy many restaurants in the Ballyhoo family so have been looking forward to checking this one out, but unfortunately it didn't live up to it's big sisters (Pomeroy, Sophia's Steak to name a few). The service was one of the worst, bizarre experiences I've had a restaurant. When we first sat down we had empty glasses of water, which my husband claims is always the first sign that a restaurant isn't on it's game. We asked the waiter for water giving them a chance to redeem themselves, but had to ask again, again and again. Our waiter himself did seem to be off his game. We placed our order for drinks and had a in depth conversation with him where he promised my friend to make her a special drink that she'd love. 10 minutes later he returned and asked to take our drink order and didn't seem to have recollection of our previous conversation. It was a busy Saturday night, but still quite odd. Ordering food didn't go much better and of course we had to keep asking for water. We couldn't figure out why he didn't leave the pitcher. He did tell us that he was having a bad day (fair enough), but seemed very unsteady on his feet and we were concerned he may pass out. Towards the end of the meal someone (i assume the manager) stopped by at the end of our meal to tell us that our waiter had left due to a family emergency. We were introduced to a new very smiley and helpful server. We were a little surprised that the manager didn't offer to comp drinks, bring dessert on the house or anything else to make up which was clearly a subpar experience. However, we were mostly worried that our waiter possibly drove home in the state he was in so asked our new server to check on him later. As for the food it was fine. Apps: peekytoe crab toast (3 stars) and devils on horseback (4 stars) Entree: shared the duck tacos (3 stars) and chop't veggie with salmon (2 stars- bland) We skipped dessert, but the dessert menu did look tasty. I'd try again since i know it takes new restaurants a bit of time to get up to speed, but wasn't overly impressed in comparison to other Ballyhoo establishments. read more

Pretty decent spot! It's considered a "gastropub/tavern" online, but felt more upscale. We sat indoors close by the patio and the breeze coming through was nice, they have a cute fireplace too which gave the ambiance a more comfy feel. All of the food was okay, but definitely very salt heavy. I had high hopes for the crab toast, but despite me being a fan of any fried food, the toast itself was super oily. We ordered a couple of small bites and a couple of medium ones. I will say that for two people, an added entree is a must next time because the portions were small aside from the chicken skewer (hence the category on the menu). Overall, we enjoyed our time. Our server was charismatic and explained everything well. I think the only major miss was the drink I ordered, I believe it was the Queen Doesn't Need a Passport, and it unfortunately tasted really watered down in terms of all flavor as well as alcohol. read more

Pleasantly surprised when we booked this spot to try! It was pretty hard getting an RSVP even on a weekday so book ahead! We ordered a lot to try: Brussel sprouts: 8/10 very good, great for table to share Baked brie: 9/10 delish with the cranberry jam Crab toast: (no image) but it was 7/10 Fish and chips: 10/10 not fishy, well fried, loved the tartare sauce And both desserts were a delight to try. Nice ambiance. Food is over-priced and nothing to write home about. Menu is very limited. On a Saturday night the service was poor.

This is a new place and we were amazed that we were able to get a reservation on the day after Christmas. There isn't a parking lot, but there seems to be a lot of street parking around and I found a spot mere steps from the restaurant. The place has a old world charm with lots of dark wood and warm feelings. When you enter, there's a room to the left hosting a nice sized bar area which made me immediately think of the bar area from Cheers. The place was full and they seemed like regulars from the neighborhood. I saw someone come in and thought I heard the place yell out, "NORM!", but that was in my head but made me smile nonetheless. In front was a host stand and a welcoming host and hostess who both welcomed us to Jackman & Co and took our name for our reservation and then immediately walked us to our table. It was a booth and I was a bit worried as I am a bigger individual and find booths kind of cramped, but didn't feel this way here. They had ample space for someone of my girth. It's a nice place with a warmth in decor of dark wood and white tablecloths. We started with the Potato Chips and Dip. It sounds very informal, but the chips are housemade (kind of like the homemade chips from Claim Company) and a tasty dip with sturgeon caviar. That turned an eyebrow or two from us, but we ordered it anyway and it was very good. A nice way to start the meal. As I look at their current menu offerings, I'm bummed as the item I ordered, a short rib pot roast on noodles isn't listed, but I assure you, it was there and it was perhaps one of the best dishes I've had anywhere of late. It was so flavorful and filling. It was a nice update of a traditional pot roast dish and I wish they had it on the menu so you could go and order it as it was so delightful. They also had a special drink which is also not on the menu, but it was equally good. We will definitely return and check out their outdoor seating when it is warmer out. This is my second review of Jackman & Co. Today, I went with two friends to attend happy hour. My one friend is wheelchair bound and unable to sit in a high top chair. I phoned 4 times during the day to ask if this is an issue and how can we be seated for happy hour. No one phoned back. I already had a bad experience with my first visit and thought, oh no, here we go again. We arrived and the service was spectacular. We were told to sit wherever we wanted and we would be able to order off the happy hour menu. Our server, Jarod (I hope I spelled his name right), was unbelievable. The happy hour appetizers were wonderful. We also ordered a goat cheese tart that was amazing. This visit certainly made up for the last one. This restaurant is beautifully decorated and very warm. Not sure I will return for dinner. I am looking forward to their lunch menu. Going for happy hour was a good choice. read more

We loved Jackman when it first opened...great food, service. Unfortunately, this past visit was quite disappointing. Food was not very good - ratatouille tart and mussels, just okay. Steak was average. Waffle fries not very good. Best part of the meal was the apple crisp (excellent). Service was okay - not as friendly and helpful as it used to be. I would give this place a five for service and a 2 1/2 for food. Granted, I only had appetizers. But shouldn't that set the tone for the rest of the menu? We went in for Happy Hour. The five appetizers are half price, as are many beers, house wine and three cocktails. I would've liked a well cocktail option but I made do. We had the dates, the Swedish meatballs and the pigs in a blanket. None of them were hot. All of them were underwhelming. The dates had a sauce I can only describe as vinegar forward. I have to think they didn't cook down the vinegar in whatever sauce they poured over the dates. The meatballs were fine, but not hot. The pigs in the blanket were just OK. So we decided to order an appetizer that wasn't part of happy hour. It was the homemade chips with a caviar dip. The chips were insanely thick cut, cold, slightly stale and super salty. The cheese dip with caviar was cold and difficult to dip the overcooked chips in. I've had this appetizer in other restaurants, it just didn't work the way they served it. On the plus side, the bartender noticed we weren't eating it and he asked why. I told him specifically why we didn't like it and he took it off our check. We didn't expect that but it certainly caught our attention. It's a young restaurant, they're learning and apparently they want to make things better. I'd say the thing they have down pat is an incredible group of employees. We are former restaurant workers so we understand how new restaurants have to work out the kinks. We will definitely give them another try. read more

I have to say that I was excited to try this new offering by Ballyhoo. I have visited all of their restaurants and thoroughly enjoy them all, except for J & Co. The restaurant itself is huge and nicely decorated and their bar area is really big and the dining room has its own bartender which keeps that side of the house flowing when the bar itself is busy. The menu just doesn't make any sense. It's a mix of English, French and Indian food with small, medium & large plate offerings but nothing melds. I believe that it is an attempt at a north woods supper club yet it falls short. We started with the Prarie breeze cheddar puffs. They look like hush puppies, but have a great flavor. It comes with a currant jam, which was tasty but belongs with beignets in my opinion. The chicken pot pie was hot and flaky and delish, but it was accompanied by button mushrooms on the plate which just didn't belong there. The Brussels sprouts were good but when asked about the "labneh" in the menu description the waiter had no idea what it was and came back with "Greek cheese". I had the tavern burger, because Forza Meats prides all their burgers and it was very flavorful but served on a "crumpet" which just didn't complement the burger. The vidalia onion relish was a big hit, packed with flavor. The waiter was difficult to understand . He had a thick accent and spoke quietly and had to be asked to repeat himself several times. The longer we were there the louder that it got and the lighting stayed dim as the sun went down. Valet parking only, unless you can find nonexistent street spots. I really wanted to like Jackman & Co, but I just couldn't get there. read more

I've been to many of the Ballyhoo group restaurants and have found them to have a high level of service, and food well prepared and tasty. This was my first time at Jackman. Very nice atmosphere and professional, helpful waitstaff. I had the burger, which was quite good with unusually shaped fries on the side. We ordered two salads, a green goddess, and a chopped salad. Both were mediocre. They were too lightly dressed to impart any flavor so they just seemed like compositions of raw vegetables. Artichoke dip as an appetizer was good but not great. My dinner companions had the white fish as entrée which they loved and the tandoori chicken skewers, which were a hit also. read more

The Monday special was great. I love the atmosphere and the decor of the restaurant. I didn't eat outside, but walked out to check it out and what a beautiful spot next to the river. Upscale pub, nice atmosphere. Food pricy but good. Our group tried one of everything - appetizers/entrees/desserts. Enjoyed most. The chopped salad was one of few options for vegetarians and wasn't great. Service was good, especially at the beginning, but our server didn't check on us during our meal. When she came around at the end and saw our Sunday roast mostly uneaten and I said it was completely rare (raw) despite ordering medium rare, she just said "Oh" and took it away. For a $46 meal your servers need to make it right - in our case, simply cooking it a bit more would have been great. A sour note in an otherwise pleasant dinner. read more

The bacon wrapped dates were soggy, the burger was good, but the patty was very dense. Not sure what they hype is over this place, but to charge $15 for a drink with old crow? EXCELLENT! I'm sure everyone says this, but you feel like you're not in Glenview at this beautifully appointed City-like bar and restaurant! We were seated at a very comfortable booth in the spacious room with the gorgeous bar. We were there for an early dinner, so JOHN was both our talented, personable mixologist and server from the City! JOHN is very and equally skilled / knowledgeable in both the "gastro'' and "pub" areas whcih made for an especially very enjoyable, delicious experience. We felt VERY spoiled with the attentive service! We started with perfectly melted, very lightly fried Wisconsin Cheese Curds which were outstanding - possibly the best ever! I consider myself a fried cheese curd expert and snob with both my kids having attended UW/Madison! For entrees, my mother had the exquisitely presented and uniquely prepared seafood special which was grilled grouper artfully toppped with crab and chopped asparagus accompanied with wonderful Bernaise sauce on the side. I had the equally delicious Gem Caesar Salad because that's all I had room for after eating SO many cheese curds! Decent food, some good deals for happy hour. I ordered a Cosmo and couldn't taste any Vodka. I complained to the bar tender and she assured me she poured vodka. I realized all of the cocktails are poured to one ounce nothing over. The Cosmo was $19!! Devils on Horseback which are sweet bacon wrapped dates stuffed with white cheddar. A small but incredible bite. Alongside those we tried the Housemade Crisps & Dip. These potato chips were durable and not crazy salty wich is nice because that didn't take away from the dip. However, I did wish the dip had more onions to add more savoryness, it felt a little dill heavy. The Tomato & Leek Tart had a solid buttery ad flaky base with a hint of sourness from the goat cheese, I really liked this dish. As someone who is a huge fan of duck, I had to try their duck confit tacos. The duck texture was almost like a stew, and they use griddled roti to complete a soft and very flavorful bite. As a burger fanatic, I was told I needed to try this tavern burger. It features Iowa cheddar, their own take on a gentleman's relish, vidalia onions all sandwiched by their own house made crumpets. The crumpet is soft, the beef is super juicy, and the relish had some unique funk to it from the anchovies. I definitely haven't had a burger like this before. As for dessert, the sticky toffee pudding did not disappoint. Moist and sweet from the buttermilk ice cream, and a comforting dessert to wrap up the meal. read more

Food was delicious, I had two appetizers, the crab toast, and the dates. Both were excellent. For my entree I ordered the fish and chips. The meal was perfectly executed. The batter on the fish was light and crispy and full of flavor. The service was excellent, our table received appropriate attention we never felt ignored nor bothered. The restaurant perfectly captures the English pub vibe and the lit fireplace provided a cozy atmosphere. I would come back again. read more
