Meiers Tavern is a landmark business. You walk in, and it epitomizes the typical midwest tavern-bar. The decor is positively vintage. It's great. We had a couple of beers and ordered the Rubens with tater tots. The other way to go here is to order a burger. They are well known for their burgers. The fries were great, too. We will stop in for their Friday Fish Fry special. Service was very efficient and great. Oh- they are CASH ONLY, so bring some money with you. read more

If you like old school tavern then this is the place for you. We stopped in for lunch today. Never been here but driven past many times. Our server was awesome but I was disappointed when it came to the food. Yes I know you're thinking it's a bar but still bar food can be kick ass but the food here lacked. I had a party melt served on a paper plate with tater tots. 8 yes 8 tater tots to be exact. The other party I was with had a fish salad and she had 6 yes 6 tater tots. What's the sense in having a side if it's not really a side. I'm glad we stopped but maybe work on food presentation. If you ask me will I be back the answer is yes. I love coming here for the last 30 years. The food is good, it's your classic local bar. The Dab beer on tap is ice cold. They have a full bar and it's a little loud but a great place to visit for a cold one and good bar food. Cash only!! read more

This is an excellent old-time neighborhood tavern -- well run, with superb service (we love our regular server, Colleen) and classic food. We go here every Tuesday night after a rehearsal. We call ahead so they always have our table ready for us in their upper dining room. Colleen remembers our usual drinks, and for those of us who often get the same food, she remembers that, too. She's amazing, friendly, and always seems to glad to have us there! My favorites are the chicken fingers, and the grilled cheese with ham. Both come with tots, fries, or slaw. Prices range from about $9 for the chicken fingers to about $12 for the grilled cheese. We also do a little singing (we come after an a cappella chorus rehearsal and are all singers, and bring "tag" books with us), and love it when other patrons come upstairs to listen and comment. read more

I live close to this place and have driven by it for months telling myself "self, you need to try it out". Mission accomplished! I tried the thing everyone suggests, cheeseburger with tots. I ordered it medium, it came well done. That appears to be common among taverns. The cheeseburger is a basic cheeseburger. The tots, were basic tots. Seasoning isn't really the selling point on these, it is the cash price. Cash... they only accept cash. They have an ATM though. My meal sans drink cost 10.45 without tax. I mean, that is very good for a sit down place. The atmosphere of this place is exactly what you'd expect from a roadhouse tavern. Lots of wood, checkered table cloths, and the noise of a manual cash register in the background. The TVs over the huge bar are not too big, and this is a throwback in nostalgia to the 1960s. Hamms beers signs, Blatz sign at the front door, and DAB and Old Style on tap. The patrons are definitely locals and there are plenty (about 1/2 capacity on a Saturday at 2) This is an experience. If you are in the neighborhood, it is worth stopping and having a beer and a burger. I may need to come back on Friday for the fish fry. read more

Gotta love Meiers. Dan and tots. My colleague Jacque had an incident in the men's room with the paper towel dispenser but will recover, not the first time something like this has happened to him. Jacque also was uncomfortable with the staff but after they warned him for being aggressive he subsided. All 10 tater tots were wonderful. read more

I think the tavern/restaurant is a great local neighborhood place if you just want to sit at the bar. I ordered the fish sandwich and none of it would stay on the bun. My friend had the same issue. Cash only. Regulars only. I think the only way they get customers is because it is inexpensive eats. No bottles of wine served. Not sure how you can be a bar and not have bottled wine to offer. Be prepared that you are in a bar, and they make you feel like you are in a bar. The inside could use a massive cleaning, and updating. We both had burgers with tots. After the food came to our table we ordered more tots as there were less than 10 served per serving. The food was presented on Styrofoam plates. The price was really reasonable, so the meals were small. Service was good. Then there is that payment by cash only thing. It reeks of tax evasion and not paying your fair share. Might be a good reason the business is unclaimed. It would be great if they brought everything in the restaurant/bar up to current code. We will not be going back to Meyers Tavern. read more

The burgers were not warm so they had been sitting too long to be taken out. Not good. There are better burgers out there. The onion rings were excellent and hot, really good. I don't recommend this place. I made this account specifically to leave a bad review for this tavern. My friends and I wanted to play darts and this place was recommended. They don't have any boards, Food service was terrible, the food itself was mediocre and we asked for specific things not to be included in our food and they were, the Philly cheese steak sandwich wasn't worth it with, there was even a hair in the ranch dressing! I'm also pretty sure our waitress was high and homophobic to my friends too. NEVER COMING BACK! read more

When you walk into Meier's Tavern, you are entering an institution, a 100 year old pub that may not have been cleaned in the last 100 years. Perhaps most patrons are more interested in nostalgia than cleanliness....I prefer the later. There is a permeating musty smell which becomes less noticeable once you adapt to the environment. Now for the disgusting part....most menu items come with tater tots. One of my tater tots was attached to another tater tot by a long hair, so that matter pretty much killed my appetite... I chose not to call the matter to the attention of server....I didn't want another order of tater tots and I'm not looking for a free lunch, I just won't be back... Too bad, because this joint is a landmark but in desperate need of a deep cleaning. read more

Divey hole in the wall bar, definitely has a family feel, and attracts people of all ages (we brought our 2yo). There's a mix of friend get togethers, and some families. There are plenty of tables, and some bar seating as well, but it fills up fast. There are only a couple of wait staff, so getting service might be a little tough, but that's to be expected considering this isn't necessarily a restaurant, it's more of a bar that serves food. To that point, the food they offer is what you'd expect of a divey bar, fried, greasy foods, but pretty good! I've had their fried fish, the tuna melt, and the reuben, and the reuben continues to be the star. Comes with fries. Everything is served on very disposable (read: styrofoam) plates, for ease of disposal and hopefully, to contain any greasy messes left behind. read more

First impressions are everything, and it was this; maybe the worst waitress ever. Complained loudly about how busy the business was. THEN the tables filled in as the game had ended and she walked around swearing (loudly) about customers actually being customers; they wanted things. She left our table TWICE because she deemed our ordering process too slow. How fast can you say "draft Dab, diet and rum". That's what we thought too. Well I can assure you we'll not return to burden this place with our wants, needs and money. KUDOS to the kitchen. The burgers were great and my Reuben was really good too. It's amazing to me that businesses that can really cash in from large groups and game days (like bars, restaurants) can't scale floor service to the known customer surge. In any event, da waitress presumably cashed in big on tips from us silly, needy customers. Meiers has been around for eons and the customer experience should meet a much higher standard. A throwback, no-nonsense roadhouse pub. I initially was attracted by the Blatz sign out front but quickly found out they've got more to offer! The food was excellent, we had a Reuben and a cheeseburger with tots and a DaB! Bartender Chuck was personable and told us all about the history of the bar. 10/10, definitely coming back. read more

I've driven by this place too many times to count. And just about every time I comment about how I want to try it and never have. Well we finally did it. My wife and I took the two boys and they had chicken nuggets to satisfy them. We went for more adult options and the food was very good. Now we need to get back on Friday for the fish fry. Could also see spending a relaxing afternoon at the bar. One thing to remember is Meier Tavern is CASH ONLY! I don't recall seeing an ATM, but they do not take cards. OK, another scathing review from yours truly. I'm Still looking for that decent CBR..corned beef on rye, I suspect it's unobtainium. But having struck out with several other eateries (unabashed promo for my other posts..) up (too far, really) north of me, I Googled and then remembered I've driven past Meier's for years and like everyone else put it on the do-this-sometime list. So, I done it. This only only applies to My visit and the CBR I called in an order for, Mark answered. I misjudged the exit and had to find my way back, but the CBR was ready by then. What'd I get..well lemme tell ya.. Order was for one CBR, no mustard, with coleslaw. Simple. I guess I'm in the olde-tyme-spoiled-rotten-on-CBRs-from-Bob-Elfman's clique, that's my standard of excellence. Sowwy, youngsters, you wuz born at the wrong time. So. Components: bread - good, light rye, no caraway seeds 'tho *** pickle - two small 'slices', appropriately packaged separately * slaw - one! small-cup (only) not-so-great imitation none beef - well, Better than Max 'n Benny's but made not with ** actual Slices of corned beef but, as may be common now, random pieces; howEVER, tasty and cooked mostly properly. BUTs - far far too little! Slaw and Pickle. Restaurants seem not to understand the concept of the Proper Ratio of Sandwich to Slaw and Pickle....ahem. Cost: ~$13. (ouch) As much as Max 'n Benny's but less beef and etc. And Cash Only, to boot....good thing I had some... One (fairly large) sandwich, deficient on the portion of beef IMHO, means a meal for Two. Which -should- include: ...at least Two small or One LARGE coleslaw (wet and tasty vs dry and tasteless) ...sufficient Real pickle, i.e. a Whole Damn Pickle, quartered. (IIRC, M & B give you something resembling a Cucumber.. ...not not a real Kosher Dill pickle, nosirree Bob) Also included was their standard? plastic knife, fork and some Really Nice Napkins....umm... Perhaps they could spend less on napkins and give you more beef or slaw or pickle, hey?! Return visit? Prolly, but only because a) they're MUCH closer than Max 'n Benny's (saves gas) b) ain't NO place in Chicago proper to get a decent..most anything c) maybe there'll be more beef, pickle and slaw after I call Mark and give him some feedback. Correction: the pickle was really one-and-a-half small slices, quite wimpy. But you can give 'im feedback, too! Go. Order. Eat. Report.
