Gerry is the best. I personally believe that diamonds are outrageously overpriced. For what they cost, they should have lasers beaming out of them... but the market is what it is and I don't have the tech/ machinery to grow my own. With that said, if you are in the market for a diamond, do yourself a favor and call Gerry. The better known brick and mortar stores around town have a beautiful presentation and do their best to make you feel comfortable... But I would never consider buying a center stone from any of them knowing what I now know. Most of the retail stores have a markup of 30-50% hoping you'll barter down to something that is still ridiculously overpriced. They will appeal to your emotions, try and guide you toward an impulse decision... after noticing a pattern I was close to buying a diamond online. But then I found Gerry. Gerry is kind and charismatic, but he is also honest and rational. Gerry never rushed me to make a decision, explored all options, explained the science behind a diamond and the sanity/insanity behind the market. It is a different experience buying from an independent wholesaler versus a brick and mortar store. I would equate it to the difference between buying a car from a friend and buying a car from a dealership. If you prefer the feel of a dealership, ask yourself if it is more important to feel better about the purchase process or the result of the purchase. Gerry has all types of diamonds but does specialize in HPHT diamonds which are essentially diamonds that were born premature and put into a proverbial incubator to mature them into diamonds of much higher quality. If you're looking for a standard stone that is fine and Gerry can help you... But I would highly suggest researching and considering HPHT diamonds. I wanted the perfect stone for an engagement ring I was going to have custom made for my soon to be fiancé. I went to every jeweler I could find locally in the Northern Va area. I decided last summer that it was the time to get engaged, and part of the delay was my feeling of dread of shopping for, and eventually purchasing, a diamond engagement ring. I started last spring, and decided to delay until I was out of school and could devote my full concentration towards the purchase. The first place I looked at was yelp, and I visited some of the more popular retailers around san diego. I was fortunate enough to be given a half carat that was a family heirloom, and I decided to go with a three ring stone so I could match the half carat with a another side carat and a larger center diamond. I discovered a diamond from an internet search and met with Gerry from Hadar Diamonds the next day. Even though I had been casually shopping for months, he taught me a few things that I was unaware of previously. I shopped a couple other jewelers, then called Gerry again to have another look at the 1.53 carat stone and he informed me that he was going to New York and would happy to price out a matching half carat stone and report back to me. Gerry is a nice guy, very laid back California attitude combined with a Brooklyn, NY upbringing and the confidence of 30+ years in the jewelry business. He keeps his overhead low, and this is definitely reflected in the price of his diamonds. Engagement Ring...........the weight that these two words can place on ones' shoulders could bring any man to his knees. The funny thing is, for me, the recipient and commitment that this stands for was the easy part........the hard part was finding the ring. If you are reading this review than you too are faced with digging thru the endless isles of fingerprinted glass and choreographed smiles during your pursuit of the "perfect deal". I want to take the time to clarify a few things before I tell you of my experience with Hadar Diamonds, because I am assuming that you probably are hearing some of the same things that I have over the last couple of months: 1. GIA, AGS, EGL, they are all certifications that stand for the same level of quality. I have viewed many different diamonds and rings over the last 5 months, and for an ignorant person such as myself, I could not tell you the difference. The important thing is that they are certified for insurance purposes. Theoretically if one diamond is a GIA, 1.2, D, SI1, at one store, and another is a GIA, 1.2, D, SI1 at another......they should be identical in price?.......so why the 2-4K difference at some of the places I was visiting? (I do not mean that all certifications are equal, but that all diamonds under that certification should be on equal playing fields, GIA is seen as the best....but to be honest did not notice any difference between certifications with a clean eye, or under 10X loop) 2. Retailers in my experience will tell you that buying online is a "horrible" mistake, instead of just letting you make an intelligent decision on your own. I have been in sales all of my life, and I NEVER talk bad about the competition because I personally believe if I: properly educate, am honest and fair, and have a comparable product....then why wouldn't you do business with me? 3. "You have to make a decision today, "it's the last one...,", "I don't get ones like this in too often, and I have another guy that's interested"...... you have heard them all at this point I am sure.....need I say more?... So moving on to my review of Hadar..............(Please read entire review). Sketchy, it's the first word that comes to mind. I called the number that was on the website, and the owner Gerry answered the phone. After about 5 minutes on the phone, Gerry asked if I would like to put a deposit down on the diamond that we had been discussing, which had not even seen at this point. I was taken aback by this, and requested a picture of the diamond before I commit. He said he would be happy to send me a picture and I received via email within an hour of the conversation. In Gerry's defense, I went into this experience being burned before, and I was trying to have an open mind...... I even told him that I was quite jaded. What followed over the next three days was all email correspondences and constant phone calls from Gerry's end just to keep me in the loop and make me feel comfortable. Exactly one week after our initial phone call I received a package from FedEx with a "H and D" label on it which contained my ring. I was quick to open the box which contained: 1. My certification 2. Hadar quality warranty 3. A little blue box that contained the ring that I gave up my left kidney for...... I was expecting a "nice" ring for the money I spent.........I was not expecting a SHOW STOPPER!!! The ring was better then I anticipated, and I received it almost a week faster then I was originally told. I have received compliments from everyone that has seen it.......but the biggest compliment of all was the "it's BEAUTIFUL" that I was able to decipher in between my fiances' tears and snuffiluffigus impression. I cannot express to you how appreciative I am to Gerry for not only his exemplary work, and fair pricing..........but for his honesty and integrity. Let's face it, in this day and age we are all a little skeptical when something is too good to be true. This is one case where the age old adage is wrong. Gerry is just from the old school, where quality and your word is all that matters. So before you go out and try to Skatell somebody, it's worth 5 minutes to give Hadar a call. When I read the other reviews before i made the call I was upset because no one really referred to pricing. Like I said before....I wanted to help others with my review. As a reference point, I paid the same amount I was quoted in a local jewelry store for a stone that was HALF of the size of the stone that I got from Hadar............like I said.....it's worth taking five minutes out of your day to at least see what they have....you will NOT be disappointed......... I recently decided to pop the big question to my girlfriend while we were in Thailand for vacation. So with that decision came the thoughts of how do I even begin to look for a diamond as I really knew nothing about them other than that they can get very expensive very quickly. So I started visiting your local jewelry shops at the mall and your major jewelry stores in quest for that one ring with that perfect diamond and I really didn't see anything within reason that I wasn't going to drop $15,000 dollars on. I just happen to start looking on Yelp and came across Hadar Diamonds and made contact with a gentlemen by the name of "Uncle Gerry". So I made an appointment with him and he spent the better part of 2 hours explaining everything about diamonds to me that I didn't receive from the other jewelers that I had visited on a Saturday. Gerry was very personable and he made me feel comfortable that we were heading down the road of building trust and that he wasn't in the business to make a buck which I appreciated. So he showed me some lost diamonds at this his office that I had requested and I ended up wanting to go a different route which was totally on me because I wanted the ring to be perfect. So Gerry told me that he could get the diamond that I was thinking of, but I was pressed for time as I had to get to an appointment that I had that Saturday evening. The weekend went by and I stopped and a few more jeweler places that my friends had recommended, but was still up in the air on that "one" diamond.
