I believe one of the best kept secrets of San Francisco. Other tic tok bakeries are more popular - some are more expensive - but I don't think any are necessarily better - especially if you are looking for European or German style. Tartine is a go to. But its so overrated and long lines I would shy away sometimes. Wildly popular tic tok bakeries - not my thing - 4 hour wait in line - trend followers. Sure, once in a lifetime but not your every day bakery. This is an everyday (or every week) bakery - no fuss - no funny business. I love German cakes and have tried to make them myself and its not as easy as one might think. I've had the original Sacher Torte from Hotel Sacher - and let me tell you - what you buy here isn't the same but its respectable, and down to earth and could save you a $3000 airplane trip to Europe. The owner is very sweet and I think usually at the other location. I love the fruit sauces and the fillings in the donuts. Give them a try. You won't be disappointed. read more

Came by on a weekend afternoon as my friends and I were making the SF double cross trail. Tried a slice of the orange cassis cake and a pretzel. I thought the pretzel was only okay. There were a lot of things that were sold out in by the time we got there, maybe early afternoon around 1-2pm. Orange cassis cake was good. Tart and sweet but not too sweet. Took someone 5 minutes to even come to the window, no line just bad customer service. It's a very small place, it's literally a hole in a wall with a walk up window. They had only two things available from the menu and we got the BlackForest cake that has great reviews. It was by far the worst piece of cake we've ever had. There was no one distinguishable flavor. I don't know how that's possible. Not chocolate, not cherry, not sweet, not cream. Could care less to try anything else they have. I expected it to be more moist and decadent, but instead it was more light and closer to cake that your asian relatives would approve of (for those of you who get it, will get it). I'm really disappointed to be writing this because the pastries here are absolutely delicious. I occasionally drive all the way from Marin County to treat my family, which makes this experience even more frustrating. Like other reviewers have mentioned, the opening hours are unreliable. Because of the long drive, I called ahead today to confirm they were open and to ask whether pastries and cakes were still available. I was told--briefly and not very kindly--that they were open until 3 p.m. and still had pastries. After driving 40 minutes, I arrived to find they were out of almost everything. The service was extremely unaccommodating. When I asked a few questions, the person behind the counter skipped over me, took the order of the customer behind me, and sold them the last of some of the remaining pastries. I was honestly speechless. The responses I received were short and borderline rude, which made the entire experience feel even worse after such a long drive. I want the owner to know that while the pastries are excellent, the service was so poor that I genuinely wished I had stayed home and baked a cake myself with the same amount of time and effort. At one corner of the bakery, there are two tables and chairs to sit down and eat -- and that's what we did. We ordered some Berliners and a pastry that looks like a twisted rope, and in addition we decided to eat a slice of the yogurt cake. We were afraid we won't be able to take the cake safely home. Yes, we also ordered a cup of drip coffee. Usually, sour coffee is not my type. However, with the yogurt cake, it balances out. The cake was new and different because it had a nice sour punch to it. The first bite was almost puckering level sour. The layers contain fruits and one tastes like passionfruit? Maybe that was the most sour flavor in the cake. The next is the cream, the texture and flavor didn't taste like whipped cream, so happily, this made the overall cake super light and refreshing. This day, the weather was warm and overcast, so this cake brightened and refreshed us up. On the following morning, I tried the Berliner, and I liked this one as well. Both pastries are generally light; not heavy in the gut. The custard cream was my favorite. It's like a doughnut, but lighter. Arrived right at 8 am and it was confusing as the door stated that the bakery opens at 8:30 am while Google and Yelp both confirm that they open at 8 am. Street parking is plentiful first thing in the morning. The bakery has a few tables in the back. It appears that this location is merely a retail location with the baked goods being delivered from their other location. Started off with the berlinger with fresh cream and strawberries and it was excellent. The pastry was very light and the cream was fresh. Moved on to the ham and cheese croissant and it was also excellent. Super fresh and flaky croissant with ham and cheese on the inside. The apple streudal was flavorful and tasted better after heating it up in the toaster oven for a bit. The beesting cake was a touch lackluster with the yeast-based dough being on the dry side. The vanilla cream was tasty though. The Blackforest Cake was also a touch lackluster with the highlight being the fresh cream and flavorful cherries. Hahdough is a gem in San Francisco and I hope it continues to have great success. I first tried Hahdough's Berliner at the Inner Sunset Farmers Market probably circa 2017. I was so excited when they opened up a storefront. I've purchased their Berliners many times and they have always tasted incredibly fresh and delicious. They are sweet but not too sweet. I like the fruit danish and the pistachio cream or vanilla cream berliner. The pretzels and cinnamon croissants are mid. If you see a flaky looking pastry, get it!! I forgot the name but it was like top 10 baked goods all time for me. So many yummy treats here, but the price is ultra-inflated. $7 each is about the mean price of menu items. A cream filled donut is $4.50 or so. There is rarely a line so I always get my stuff fast! Great service. Very grab and go aesthetic but with a homely touch. Artisanal bulbs above the pastry bar. We are in the midst of Oktoberfest (this year: September 17-October 3, 2022) where we celebrate more than just beer. It started off as a royal wedding celebration back in 1810 when Prince Ludwig of Bavaria married Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. Because they were two very royal party animals and probably great marketers for their kingdom, they suggested it as an annual event, using their wedding anniversary to promote traditional agricultural events. And as you can imagine, it grew and grew (except it was canceled during wars and epidemics). Over the years, festival brewers in Munich started serving a Bavarian Marzenbier-style beer (lager) that goes well with Bavarian Pretzels (enjoyed with obatzda or other delicious dips). Just because we are not in Munich doesn't mean we can't celebrate Oktoberfest with some delicious pretzels. Hahdough sells pretzels by the dozen, just preorder online. And yummy Black Forest cake. My favorite is the Mokkaschokolade Torte (mocha chocolate mousse cake). Now we all get to be party animals and enjoy some cake, too. read more

Ordering one item through a food consolidator might not be the best way to judge a business. But I'll share my observations from what I learned in trying one of this bakery's signature offerings. Being a new vendor and having this item featured on an email compelled me to try them. My brother's birthday was that week and I thought it'd be a nice surprise. Then he throws me a curveball by requesting another cake from another bakery. Who am I to question or deny him?! Coincidentally, my uncle's birthday was the following weekend so we shared this when he joined our family for dinner. I come for the Berliners which are similar to jelly donuts. I don't know the technical difference, but these taste much better and are more flavorful. They seem fresher and the filling tastes like real jam with real fruit instead of the super sugary preservative-laden filling of jelly donuts at a donut shop. The shop has coffee mugs for drinking there which is nice and always tastes better, however the space is super small, there are only 2 tables inside and 1 bench outside. The parking is pretty difficult, so I usually only come here if I'm shopping at nearby Falletti Foods that has a parking lot or if I'm at Alamo Square Park which is walking distance and a good idea to bring some treats to the park. read more

My decadent selection being a Berliner with an Intense Vanilla Custard , a Flaky Turnover with Walnuts, and several low guilt Mini Donuts. My SO picked up a few sweets from Hahdough for our early Xmas gathering this year and they were all very nice.   He could not order next day pickup online so he called.  I overheard his conversation and communication regarding a same day pickup/in stock inquiry seemed oddly difficult but he was able to reserve a Gentleman's Cake (Herrentorte) for pickup later that day. I'm not certain which location he went to so I have posted this review in both locations.  When he arrived, he noted the herrentorte was the smaller version but that they also had a larger pre-sliced version available in stock. He inquired about purchasing the larger version instead but apparently they said no, which I don't really understand.   For him, this was frustrating. Instead he purchased the smaller cake as originally intended plus a few other slices to try.  Again, we were having several people over for a dinner party so we tried slices of the Bienenstich (vanilla creme, honey almond cake), Triple Chocolate Mousse Cake, and Prinzregententorte (like the gentleman's cake but without liquor).  Plus an Apfelstreuselkuchen (apple tart with struesel topping) and a small bag of cookies.   All were very good.  Light and not too sweet with clear, bright flavors and lovely, fresh fruit.  I think my favorite was the Apfelstreuselkuchen. They're quite pricey but their quality and artistry is wonderful.  Just be forewarned to order well in advance and possibly expect some difficulties if you don't. read more

Interior is tiny and cute but has everything a cafe is supposed to have and got a small area in the back if you want to dine-in. I think the back area at most fits 4 people. I think prices are reasonable for pastries in the neighborhood, especially when the croissants are so HUGE in size, so nothing outrageous. My boyfriend treated me to these, so I do not know the total of this order. Service: 4.25/5 - The staff working there was super nice, friendly and welcoming. She was patience and provided some great recommendations on which two pastries I should try out, and they were delicious. She plated the pastries for us, and bring it to us, then afterwards you clean it up yourself and return the plates near the trash can. BLUF: A hidden gem for German desserts and sweets in NOPA. They also have a second location near Hayes Valley. Definitely go early in the day for the pretzel croissant and Berliner before they sell out! My birthday cake last year was from Hahdough (I love cheesecakes and Hahdough offers one of the best cheesecakes in SF). I finally had the chance to visit the actual shop! They're right next to Schlok's (the popular bagel spot) and they have a sign outside saying something like "you should get some pastries to go w/ your bagel", which was cute. There is indoor seating space but the shop was empty when we went on a weekday morning. They had a dozen offerings to choose from, including German bread, pastries, and cakes. Their most popular items on the menu are the Berliner (German donuts with jam filling), pretzels, black forest, chocolate raspberry cake, and Bienenstich (beesting cake). Their cheesecake (we ordered the full-size one) is more on the creamy and heavy side (unlike Zanze's, which is very light). We got a slice of the Bienenstich cake in store this time. The combination of light vanilla cream, dough (which was quite dry), and the thick layer of toasted almonds at the top was positively surprising. It's my first time trying Bienenstich cake so I can't speak for its authenticity, but I found it rather tasty, albeit a bit too sweet and a little heavy (I wouldn't be able to finish a whole slice by myself, it felt like way too much cream). read more

**COVID-times review** I've been eyeing Hahdough for a while now, but hadn't found the time to walk to the Alamo Square/NoPa area. Ironically, on the way back from trying Hahdough there, I saw their Hayes Valley location (which is more like a window to order, but still--a slightly more convenient location for some. The cakes looked delicious, but alas, my friend and I did not walk for cakes. We wanted the Berliner and a pretzel--some real German goods from a German bakery! The menu and general vibe reminded me of Disneyland and Disney World, like near the Matterhorn and the Red Rose Taverne, providing a nice mini form of escapism for Disney fans. The Berliner was very good--it was light and fluffy, and despite what some reviews here mentioned, had quite a bit of filling yet still had a nice dough-to-filling ratio. The pretzel wasn't as much of a standout. I'd be back for the vibes, Berliner, and to try the cherry turnover or some other goods! Best bakery in the city. Hahdough is a jewel of NoPa. It makes Incredible and delicately layered cakes where each layer is an individual achievement but is harmonized with the whole. The cherry danish, cherry marzipan danish, and cinnamon croissants are my personal favorites from among the other pastry options, but they are all great.
