This spot is huge and has such a good café vibe. The line was insane on a Saturday morning (as expected), but it actually moves pretty fast. There's plenty of seating throughout, plus a really nice outdoor back patio if you walk all the way through. The coffee was genuinely good. I got a cappuccino and it was perfectly balanced not too strong, not too sweet. Definitely recommend if you're looking for a spacious café to work from. Flywheel is a great local chain of coffee shops, they have an amazing location on Haight Ashbury edge of GGP. It's a huge location with lots of indoor seating and even a nice back patio. I got a basic latte and an almond croissant. We got a nice table on the back patio, we were able to talk a while and enjoy the coffee and weather too. I think the coffee is really high quality, the croissant hit the spot. The space was clean and we got the coffees relatively quickly considering how busy it was. Everyone was really nice too. Every time I visit Cole Valley Flywheel is my go-to spot for good coffee. Their baristas know exactly what they are doing and I always leave with the perfect cup. Typically I order a pour over or a Cortado. The Cortado always comes out just right, with great flavor and looks great in photos to boot! They almost always have a selection of pastries at the front (if they aren't sold out) and I am often tempted into a doughnut or some other treat. The apple bacon maple doughnut was a fan favorite for me. Fair warning- it does get really busy! That being said, the line tends to go quickly and there is ample seating, so I have never had an issue finding a place to perch. Visited during a break from my other office nearby with a coworker, and honestly... I wanted to like it more than I did. The space is beautiful and there is plenty of seating, but every table was taken, so it didn't really matter. It felt more like a co-working hub than a café. What really threw me off was the smoking happening right outside the front door. The smell carried into the shop, and it lingered enough to give me a headache. For a place serving coffee and pastries, the last thing I want to smell is cigarette smoke. They really should consider a no-smoking sign near the entrance. The barista was friendly and gave me a recommendation, which was a nice moment. I went with the iced Americano and a crumble pastry, and my coworker got the chai. Nothing was bad, but nothing stood out either. The pastry couldn't be warmed up, which was disappointing, and both of our drinks were just okay. My coworker even said the chai at the other coffee shop we tried was way better than this one. They do have a cute back area that I didn't notice until we were about to leave--wish we had known earlier. After a walk in Golden Gate Park, my friend and I decided to try out Flywheel Coffee Roasters nearby. As we arrived, there was a line forming out the door, so I had a good impression that the coffee was good. Slowly making our way inside, I was impressed with the interior and aesthetic of the cafe. Many people were doing work on tables or just having casual conversations. We waited about 10 minutes in line to order our drinks. NOTE: they don't have flavored syrups because they said they don't sweeten their drinks. One worker said they have a little station at the end of the coffee bar with only simple syrup and honey if we do want to sweeten it. With that, I was under the impression that they believe in the quality of their coffee, which I respect. So I proceeded to order a Mocha, which I was sadly disappointed in. My Mocha did not taste like a mocha at all, I barely got hints of chocolate and tasted watered down. Towards the end of my drink, I see that there is a lot of chocolate at the bottom of my cup and my drink is super grainy. My mocha wasn't mixed properly and that disappointed me. Flywheel is maybe my favorite thing about my neighborhood. It'll be a real loss for the Haight if they ever leave. The folks here know and care about coffee, the drinks are great and very consistent. And it's the perfect place to read or get some work done. It's also SUPER dog friendly. I love people watching and dog watching here. The staff absolutely love dogs too. I was able to find a seat at one of the high top long tables (while sharing with another individual), but in general, the place was pretty full despite lots of seating. SIPHON - 9 I forgot which roast I selected (definitely a light roast) but I wanted to try the siphon method of coffee brewing since a couple of my friends hyped it up. You can only get the siphon coffee if you enjoy the coffee at the shop, though. The coffee was extremely smooth and clean but the coffee was really acidic and intense, more than it was bright and enjoyable. I wasn't a huge fan of the roast, unfortunately. While the fam was chilling in Golden Gate Park, I had to take meetings and looked for a place with pour over coffee. On a rainy day, where I got lucky with parking (parking hard in Haight) I walked 2 blocks to flywheel. It was busy around noon. With a single space available, Wifi was slow, and shared by over 50 people. Everyone was huddled inside. I would've given it a solid 4 stars, instead of 3.5, however the person behind the counter wasn't friendly and their demeanor suggested they hated their job. I asked what are they pouring over, and they just pointed to 8 bags of coffee, not very helpful in suggesting which ones popular or interesting. Not wanting to hold up the person behind me, I picked one that was fruity from Kenya. The coffee was ready in 5 minutes. It was average for $6 (including 20% tip). I couldn't wait to get out of the place and decided to work and take my meetings in the car. Overall after experiencing some amazing coffee experiences in LA, I guess I have a high bar for SF. This coffee shop is located at the base of the Panhandle, where it meets the Pan, which is GG Park. It's next to the Whole Foods. I came in here briefly on a weekend day, late afternoon, and I thought I walked into a Millennial's Singles Wine Bar that happened to serve coffee to counteract the booze. It was packed on a cloudy, cold, foggy SF summer day, loud, too much chaotic energy to relax in. The Pan in this part of GGP through the decades is a meeting place of young urbanites, with grassy areas and locked toilet facilities, to accommodate Hippies to Techies for half a century, trying to immerse into the SF vibe. The crowd has gone from guitar strumming flower childs saying "far out" and "peace brother" to driven tech bros and bro-ettes who reply "Got It" to everything like an AI clone on their AI smart phone. This coffee shop has 15-20 main varieties of the current and longtime legal drug of choice - caffeine - ranging from $4 espressos to $9 Affogato. Pour Overs, Drip, Siphon, hot chocolates, Americano, Lattes, etc. The space is long and narrow, from the storefront with glass to glimpse at the Pan greenery of GGP, to the rear closet sized breezeway patio, fitting 6 people in a large phone booth (phone booths are a previous century phenomenon where you can talk on a dedicated land line in a private booth if you have enough quarters ($0.25), with a door that can shut the outside noise around you, well, er, outside of your conversation, without $200 noise canceling things stuck in both ears or having to know a WiFi password). I am sure the "Vibe" (current popular word by Gen Z, who heard their grand parents saying it, now sort of claiming it for themselves, because it is too much work to come up with their own new vernacular) on a weekday here mid afternoon is a little more chillaxed (Gen X & early Millennials were creative with this morphed term 20 years ago). But coming here on a weekend on an SF summer day (pre-October Indian summer) is asking for a desperate crowd looking to get their hot caffeine fix, and getting all hyphy to beat the chill, and missing the Vibe.
