My experience at hair architects was not the ideal experience that I expected. Rob was doing great at first and then he started to use some hot tools that were much too hot for my hair type. I was recommended to a guy here named Jeremy by a customer of his who is dating my daughter lol small world. So I went here for the first time yesterday ti get my hair cut. It is located inside the Crenshaw Mall by Macys . Parking is easy as it's a mall so they have plenty. Upon arriving Jeremy was on time , which was nice. Everyone in the shop was nice and sociable. Jeremy cut my hair and trimmed it with the clippers. His work was precise and exactly what I asked for. The shop was clean and well kept. I felt comfortable. The prices are reasonable for the services they provide. I will definitely be going back. There isn't much space to sit and wait but I didn't have to wait so that wasn't a problem... just fyi. I highly recommend Jeremy. He was so nice, friendly, easy to talk to and down to earth. He listens to you and doesn't do his own thing. We went in knowing the haircuts were free for back to school. However when my older son went to sit in the chair, my husband told the barber to fade the sides... the barber said it's extra for anything other than an even all over. My husband and I said that's fine (we'll pay extra, we went in knowing it would be extra bc it said it in the advertisement) bc my son is growing out his top. The barber proceeds to repeat himself... after his third repeat of "that's the rules, it's a free haircut" we told my older son to get up( haircut hadn't started) and we left. Mind you he had just cut my youngest. Pictures below.now I know what free means but do you sacrifice quality for that? Most barbershops are therapeutic from an array of random conversation topics, but this one by far is the most comical. I've been coming here for 12 years this month and there is never a dull moment. There are a few barbers that have heavy island accents and no one really understands them. Surprisingly, they are the loudest in the shop so you'll hear them no matter where you are lol. There's one from Belize, one from Jamaica, and another from Trinidad & Tobago. As a foreigner myself I can understand them all, and don't really miss much. Great laughs every time. The topic this afternoon was trust in a relationship and how far will you go to please your lady/partner in bed. Between that, Donald Trump, and a random push up challenge you can imagine the commotion that derived from each opinion. Anyway, J is the best barber in the shop. If they are 10 clients waiting you can be sure that at least 8 of them are waiting for him. He only takes appointment during the week, weekends are first come first serve. Just be prepared to wait a minimum of an hour and a half if J is your barber. Every barber in here is skillful with the clippers so you won't be let down no matter who's chair you decide to sit in. I for one is loyal to J so no one else would touch me even if I tried to go elsewhere. Lastly, the prices here are a bit on the high end. 20$ for a cut and 15$ for a shave if you have a beard. That does not include tips, so you can do the math. If you factor in the entertainment that comes along with this place you wouldn't mind the prices, I know I don't. read more

I had just arrivred in town for a funeral the next day, and needed a simple cleanup of my fade. It was a little after 6PM, but I'd heard of this barbershop in the Balwdwin Hill Plaza. I looked them up online and saw they were open until 9PM. I probably should have read some of the reviews first, but I was in a bind. I decided to go for it. I should have known it wasn't going to be a good experience when I walked in. For starters, their door was closed, although the shop was open. There was a young woman sitting at the desk eating pizza, but made no effort to acknowledge me. Another guy, who I presumed to be one of the barbers stood next to her, but looked annoyed by the fact another customer was coming in. All of the barber chairs were empty, except for 3, which were occupied by other stylists. No one moved. Finally, an older gentleman asked if I needed a cut, I said yes. He pointed to the guy near the reception desk, who mumbled something about leaving, then started packing up his things. The older guy said he had someone coming in, but he could get me in 15 minutes. I sat down to wait; all of this, and it wasn't even 7PM yet. A bald gentleman walks in and says he could cut me. The older guy points to him as well. I go over to the chair and proceed to tell him what I wanted. His behavior was a bit "off" in my opinion. He was mumbling, rapping, and reciting lines from the movie "Barbershop", which was playing on the TV screen. All of these things were clearly distracting him because he kept jerking my head, and demanding I keep still when I hadn't moved at all. I also noticed he was spending a lot of time cutting in the same spot. I asked him to please not push my hairline back. He became indignant, and went on about my hairline already being "jacked up", and my hair "didn't grow regular anyway". He went on to say he was a professional, and that was an insult...blah blah blah. Really, bruh? When he finally gave me the mirror to check his work, it was a COMPLETE mess. My hairline was crooked, and he hadn't even taken it all the way across. When I pointed that out, he got an attitude, and got loud about looking at what he had to work with. I told him anyone could see the line was incomplete. He finally recognized it, and gave me a quick buzz. I'd had enough, so I said we were done and got out of the chair. He looked at me, shook his head, then gave me the ticket to pay the cashier. I did not leave a tip for that bullshit. It''s unfortunate that many people in our community don't respect basic customer service rules, or know how to treat people who are spending money with them. If your door is closed during posted business hours, your reception staff is eating pizza, barbers are rushing to go home, and the only people seated in your chairs are the people who work there, then that's a problem. Couple that with poor service and lack of skills, then tell me why I should support you for simply being Black-owned. read more

Went in for a walk-in appointment and was told by Mike his chair would be free in 30mins for me, I asked if I could come back then and get a cut and he said yeah, so I left the barbershop and came back in 30mins and he was still cutting the gentlemen's hair - which I expected. The problem however was that when I did get back Mike told me that he wouldn't be able to cut my hair anymore because he really wanted to go get some insurance, do his mileage, and get a snack... I thought it was a joke at first. I asked really, and he said anyone else could cut you up tho. The same people that were free when I walked in the first time. So I told him it was fucked up he had me come back in 30mins when he could have told me that bullshit before. So clearly I left out of there without getting a cut. Then when I call back to speak to the manager to make a formal complaint someone picks up the phone by the name of Aron or Eric and he tells me he's the manager, I begin my complaint and then he passes the phone to Mike, I asked Mike if I could speak to the manager and he (Mike) tells me he is the manager... After that it's clear as day this shop is full of shit. I had been coming to this shop since the early 2000s when it was in The Fox Hills Mall, then it closed down there and became re-established at the Baldwin Hills Mall, I went there too. However since I shaved my head a few years back I only visit when I'm growing my facial hair out. It sad this place has gone so far in their customer service. People still cut decent in there but the service is horrible. I'm giving it two out of five because a lot of those barbers are still decent people despite the horrendous service I just received. There's something pleasing about getting a haircut in the mall in a nice shop with nice chairs, nice furniture, nice people, nice mindset, where the hair is always swept up, they don't play ghetto television, the magazines are no older than last month and the bathroom is actually clean. This is how I feel about HA at the Baldwin Hills Plaza. I'm done with the heathens on the block @ the slop shops with thugs & low-life bad mouth barbers with no license who'll have sex with your girl behind your back when you ain't lookin' and expect you to piss in a trash can as the bathroom. It pays to read the reviews...I was a walk in and the lady at the front counter told me about a 15 minute wait...! About an hour later she asked me to then pick which barber I'd like to cut my hair based on their appearance! I told her that I'm hoping that they are all gifted and I wasn't choosey...basically who ever was available first! Then I'm informed that some people that had just arrived without an appointment was now before me because they were familiar/friendly with a few of the barbers! To be honest I was weary since its located in the mall and I thought it would give me a bad experience like at Great Clips but I am glad to say I was wrong. They are trash! Do not go here I repeat do not go here! The haircut I got was like somebody's first time at barber school. I was charged 33 dollars for a 3 dollar haircut. I guess I tipped him 30 for how long he took hacking up my lining. I would post a pic of it so y'all can see before and after so you all can be the judge! Ok on the left is my last haircut when I was living in NYC on the right is right now! I just left the shop looking like I had this cut for years! This is a no go wow what was I thinking. I was sitting in the chair about to cry because I'm going to need surgery on this lining. I was better off butchering myself. I don't normally shop at the BH Plaza; however, I took my niece for a job interview. While I was walking around, I stepped inside the salon, and asked for someone who was good at short hair cuts. The receptionist referred me to Shari. I felt so comfortable with Shari, I scheduled an appointment for the next day - for a hair cut and new style. My pet peeves are stylists who keep you waiting -- and those who double book . There is no waiting or double booking with Shari. When she books you, she schedules enough time to do whatever is necessary. The best way to reach Shari is on her cell 323-424-9295. Tell her her "favorite traveling customer" referred you. She'll know who you mean. One other thing...although they accept credit cards...they charge a $3.00 fee. BRING CASH :-) read more

I called her yesterday morning and was able to get an appointment after work. I was very pleased with Elaine's warm attitude. I started coming to HA years ago, when I could get haircuts on my own and didn't need my mom to drive me around. This place is very clean and tidy, and the amenities are nice. wood paneling and a contemporary vibe when you enter. The smell of hair products and hair dryers are always nostalgic and unique to a hair saln like this. Most of the barbers here are independent contractors, so the quality you get jumps from person to person, although they all are relatively skilled and professional. I've gotten maybe one or two bad haircuts, but I'm starting to build rapport with some of the better ones so I can look for them by name. Overall a great place in the mall, a stable addition (everyone needs haircuts!) and being right off the escalator means you can't miss it. If you are using a credit card BEWARE they have a $3 fee to do so. better off to bring cash and make it easier on everyone. read more

Miko is a great barber - takes his time and I never feel like he fades me out like I'm a man, cause I'm not :). This is a big deal as some barbers line men and women up the same way without considering face shape, and/or gender. So 4 stars for Miko. I give them 3 stars to match with that RIDICULOUS $3 charge for using your card. The last time I was there I suggested to the receptionist that they upgrade to a free Square device . Ron is the best! Hands down. He caters to both men and women and is so amazingly talented, gifted, personable, affable and an all around genuine person. He excels in his craft and it shows! I haven't had the best of luck with trusting anyone with my hair since my former stylist moved away. I went in BEYOND desperate for a trim and I'm already super leery of ANYONE even looking at my hair, let alone, touching it or even worse -- bringing scissors close to my hair to cut it. What a blessing to finally...FINALLY have found someone to fill her shoes (and trust me, she is a tough act to follow). I came in today based on the recommendation of a friend and regret it completely. The lady who was supposed to assist me was rude, unpleasant and made me feel singled out because of the type of hair I have. When the receptionist had me walk over, this lady made a comment along the lines of "you didn't tell me it was one of those." Then she made an excuse about having to leave and no longer being able to do my cut. When I asked her for suggestions she started poking fun at me. She said what I was saying did not make sense and if I wanted suggestions I should go look at magazines because there wasn't anything she could tell me. She accused me of getting confrontational and at one point told me to go see if someone else would cut my hair because she had somewhere to go. She stated that "she was the artist" and she has to have a vision of what I want and right them based off what I was saying, she thought I made no sense! Rude! I ended up going to Awesome Hair in Inglewood and Asia did an amazing job! If anyone at this establishment thinks it's ok to treat customers this way- especially because I'm not their regular type of client then that is reason enough not to go here. Went to HA for a cut last week; my regular barber is out sick so I decided to give them a try. Prices are clearly posted; I asked for a fade and beard trim. When the barber wrote me the ticket (the barber from Mississippi in the back corner) the charge was $30! Sign said $15.00 for a haircut and $10.00 for beard trim. When I asked, he said it was an "extra" $5 bucks for a fade. I paid with my debit card and was hit with another $3 buck charge (I should've read these yelps before going). All in all it was $38 bucks (I did tip him $5 bucks which I think is customary) for a OK cut and beard trim. I got hosed people. Will Never go there again! I'm relatively new to Southern California and have spent months trying to find a healthy hair conscious hair dresser. I took a chance coming to HA and it was an ok experience. I called beforehand to see if I could walk-in and they said it was ok. When I got there the receptionist was looking down at her phone for about a minute before someone else told her that I was waiting. Maybe it was just a really intense game of angry birds... Anyway, I'm a bit torn. While the relaxer took very well at my roots (I had stretched for 5 months and they charged for virgin hair), I have never had a hair dresser take that long to put relaxer in my hair. That was concern number 1. Concern number 2 is the amount of time I spent at the salon. I had another appointment 2.5 hours after I came into the salon and was told I should be out with plenty of time to make it to my appointment...I was over an hour late. It's not like the stylist overbooked or was super busy, for some reason it just took a long time. My final concern is that the stylist didn't trim my ends. Every professional stylist I have gone to for a relaxer has trimmed my ends. Not a full trim because I understand that is extra, but just to get rid of split ends. Because of this, I couldn't even run my fingers through my hair without it getting caught and my ends looked beyond frizzy. I've had a lot of short strand breakage since then. The styling was meh. For so much heat that they used on my hair, I'm surprised that my hair wasn't that straight and had movement. I'm not sure that I'll be back but if I do it probably won't be with the same stylist. read more
