However, I knew that I had to find a local go-to hair salon. Many bad haircuts ensued, but for the longest time I just couldn't find a decent hair stylist. I went to barber shops, local salons, etc., but they all did not make the cut. When I first found James on the Yelp app, I was hesitant because of all the previous failures and I was like WTH is an "Aura Zoom"? And, at that time he was renting a station in the back of a beauty supply store over on Oak Grove in Walnut Creek which was kind of weird. Still, I gave him a try and was like, he's pretty good. He actually knew what a fade was. Then James relocated over to a salon off of North Main Street in Walnut Creek when he rented another station and I followed. It was here that I observed his scissor skills improve to an elite level and soon enough he was busier than the owner of the hair salon. Seriously, the dude was working seven days a week. Maybe it was jealousy at the old salon or he just needed his own space, but his move to his very own salon suite co-op space akin to a WeWorks for hair dressers within the W Salon Suites in Alamo has been awesome. Now he has his very own enclosed suite and you can get some coffee at the shared lounge that is usually brewing Philz coffee beans. James is probably the best hair stylist in the East Bay, if not the Bay Area. Give him a try if you want a great cut. He accepts cash, Venmo, and credit cards. BTW, I still have no idea what Aura Zoom means LOL. * English is not his first language, but he speaks it well. When I arrived today he was unfriendly and insulted me initially by saying "What are we going to do with this MESS today" while pulling his fingers thru my hair with disdain. He began to wash my hair and then asked me why my hair was greasy? My hair is NEVER greasy. I wash it daily. If anything it is dry from swimming daily. I sat in the styling chair and extended my leg and placed my foot gently up on the formica cabinet in front of my chair to relax my back. He turned to me with hostility and said "Do people put their feet up on your furniture in your house?" I thought he was joking. I put my other foot up next to it waiting for him to laugh. He said "You have to leave" and started removing my cape. I still thought he was kidding! He said "You don't come into my house and disrespect me"! I said "Are you serious"? He said "Yes you have to leave". I began to apologize over and over again, telling him that I meant no disrespect and I thought he was kidding me all along. He wouldn't accept my apology and made me leave. I felt that if anyone was being disrespected it was me. I have NEVER been treated with such a hostility. BTW, the floors in the place were completely trashed. He is the owner of the shop and if he is not concerned about the condition of his shop, he should not be so sensitive about someone placing their foot straight out in front of their chair touching their cheap cabinet. There are 3 reviews from 5 and 6 years ago that were 5*. Something has definitely changed in the last 5 years, believe me because this man should not be in a service profession where professionalism is required.

Ben is seriously the best. He's so nice, accommodating, and really pays attention to detail. I didn't realize that because I had waited so long since my last appointment, I would actually need a color correction this time instead of just the root touch-up I originally booked. I felt terrible because I know that required more time and work than what I scheduled, but Ben was so understanding and still accommodated me. Even with the extra work, he was SO quick and efficient and managed to get everything done within 5 hours without sacrificing the quality at all. My balayage came out absolutely beautiful! What impresses me the most is how healthy my hair feels. I've been blonde before going to Ben, and my hair was always dry and unhealthy from the bleach. Since going to him, it's completely different. Even after getting my hair lightened, it still feels soft, healthy, and looks so shiny. You can really tell he uses high-quality products and knows how to protect the integrity of your hair. I've been a happy client of the wonderful and talented Henry since 2016. I have referred many…read morefriends over the years and everyone, like me, loves Henry's technique and his personality even more. Truly a kind and caring person. For this review, I will highlight the experiences of both myself and my family. First, with me. I have chemical sensitivities and was trying to find a hairdresser that could provide less toxic hair color. Henry was up to the task, and always open to trying different lines until we found just the right one. He was so patient with me, letting me borrow samples so I could take them to my doctor to get tested. We had a lot of fun over the years, with highlights/purple pop color, and always red. Finding a red that lasts isn't easy, but Henry has that dialed in, too, along with natural, non-toxic support products and in-salon conditioning treatments. I've included some pictures of my styles over the years. As of 2020, I'm about 40% gray, and the color still works great! Henry offers a non-toxic root touchup (picture a big eye shadow container with a brush) that I use in between appointments, and it works great! Henry is so caring, sensitive to my needs, a great listener and a very talented colorist. In 2017 my daughter wanted to donate her hair to cancer patients. As you can imagine, after growing her hair for 10 years, this was a little bit of a stressful event. Of course, Henry made it all fun and was very kind to her. In between the COVID shut downs I got my fiancé in to see Henry. Wow, we both agree it's the best haircut he's ever had in his life! Thank you Henry for taking care of me, my family, and my friends. I was hesitant at first because of a previous experience with buying deals for highlights (basically a huge waste of money), but was optimistic after reading so many 5 star reviews about April. Highlights: If you're unsure about how to highlight your hair, don't fret! April will help you out with her nifty sample hair color book and years of experience coloring hair. She explained to me the different ways hair can be highlighted and how each method gets a slightly different result. I got caramel highlights and I LOVE them. Aside from the fact that it's comforting to know that she really does know what she's doing, she doesn't skimp on the highlights. My hair is now highlighted evenly throughout. Haircut: She gave me THE BEST layers I have ever gotten. If you have her layer your hair, ask her to do the triangle thing. You don't need to know the details. Just ask for it. You'll like it. Style: Usually, when I get my hair cut, the styling part ends up being just a quick blow dry. It's like the hair stylists got tired from cutting my hair because there's so much of it, but not April. She used a diffuser instead of a regular blow dryer on my hair. (Side note: In my 22 years of life, I never knew my hair could get so wavy and voluminous.) Then she used a curling iron on some pieces to clean it up and gave me nice beachy waves instead of the ringlets that some stylists tend to give.
