It's also a mini-hobby of mine that I've been doing since 2017 or so and I'm usually happy with how I do it -- emphasis on "usually." But we have a lot of weddings coming up so I figured I should try to go somewhere to make it look more professionally done and not risk having something go wrong, and I've been looking for a new place anyway. I decided on coming here based on both the excellent Yelp and Google reviews, and it was also one of the more affordable ones ($25 for men's cut). I called at around 11am today and Young answered; I asked if she had any open spots in the afternoon which unfortunately she didn't. However she said I could come in at 7pm which is when they close, but she assured me that this was fine with her. At around 6pm she calls me and asks if I could head over now (I assume she had a cancellation or two); I was free so I was able to go. Street parking was readily available right in front of the shop. I read some reviews about the $5 charge for the shampoo service so I didn't put any product in my hair beforehand. I showed her some reference pictures, had a short discussion about what I wanted as well as some of her thoughts, and then she got right to it. It only took roughly 20 minutes as it was mostly a trim and not a big cut. She did seem a bit rushed but even so she was very efficient, although after getting home I noticed that there is a small area in the back that could have been blended in a little better. It's not terribly obvious though. What stood out to me was the fact that she actually styled my hair similar to the reference pictures I showed her. I know it sounds basic and silly, but I've shown the same reference pictures to other salons and they've only given me the haircut and minimally styled it with their hands + product afterwards; they've never really given me what I asked for. But Young busted out the flat iron and took the time to put some waviness into my otherwise thick and straight hair so I could finally see how I would look with this style. In the end I decided that the wavy-ish hair wasn't really for me, but I absolutely appreciate her giving me what I asked for so I could come to this decision. For the most part I'll keep cutting my own hair every now and then, but for those times where I don't feel like doing it or need it professionally done for a big event, I'll be coming back to see Young! There is a reason why I make good money, it is to pay people to do those things I can and could, but don't want to. My regular stylist was down for the count from the pesky virus, so I had not been able to get my hair done. I reached out on Yelp through their page and made a request for an appointment. The response was quick as someone wanted to know what service I wanted and when did I want to come in. I took a chance on seeing if I could come in on a Sunday, but never thought they would say yes....well they did. They gave me the contact info of the stylist I would be meeting with and told me to reach out to her. Tameka was quick to respond to my request and confirm the time. The shop itself is in a store front, small but attractive, with great natural lighting. It is hard to spot, but is next to the American Ale House, on the south side of Howard Street (plenty of street parking). The shampoo area is separated from the salon (two bowls) and there is a separate area for the dryers. There are about 5 stations and a receptionist desk. When I arrived, Tameka was sitting at the receptionist desk, waiting for me. My appointment was for 11 am and Tameka started immediately. I have to say she has great hands and that shampoo was amazing. Part of the service also included a steam treatment to hydrate the hair, followed by a blow dry, trim and flat iron style. Total price was $80 and well worth it, with payment handled on Zelle. My hair felt and looked amazing. Total time was an hour and a half and that is great. I hope to have my regular stylist gets well and comes back to me, but Tameka is in my contact list and I will be calling her sometime soon for another Sunday visit.

By the time I left my hair was transformed. Had my friends asking stiff where. She was knowledgeable and professional. She was very welcoming and made me feel super comfortable as a new client. I last minute decided to get a jet black rinse and I am so happy with the results! I will be going back for sure! Grateful to have had my hair done by such a skilled person.

So I was given to a new cutter who literally butchered my hair. The cut was uneven and looks ragged. The length was not uniform. No shape. It looks awful and I had to go to a salon to remedy what was done. I guess if you get a good cutter for $10 you're lucky. But don't bet on it.

Yet every time I leave, my nails and hands look far better than they have any right to. The fact that she can consistently improve decades of neglect is a testament to her skill. What also stands out is the level of professionalism she brings every day. Marta always looks polished, put together, and genuinely takes pride in her work. That attention to detail shows in the results. At this point, I'm fairly certain if she ever gets tired of doing nails, she could move on to restoring ancient artifacts or repairing historical landmarks. Her ability to transform worn-out things is remarkable. Five stars without hesitation. I also want to recognize Delia for a great haircut. I used to have my hairdresser here for over 20+ years until she ventured off on her own. The lady now doing my manicures and pedicures, have done my manicures and pedicures for over 28 years I love the longevity of some of the employees here. I absolutely love this location and I've seen them go through every renovation possible. I have used this location to prep for some of the biggest moments in life like high school prom, graduation weddings of other people, etc. I have also been here through all the various owners throughout the years and glad that is finally returned back to Mario and his team. I will say that as of recently, it's great to see they have some specials and offers. However, prices have definitely gone up. The place is in need of another renovation that is for sure. Especially the pedicure area and the restrooms. I still love how everybody has to wear a black or white. It makes very easy and simple. While the dressing and changing areas haven't changed much. It's great that nothing of mine has ever been stolen here in over 30 years considering the wide open coat and hanging area areas. I used to always get my waxes here as well. I even started some facials here a long time ago. And the lady or aesthetician who did that is surprisingly still there.
