When I last saw her in December, Vicky told me that she didn't expect to see me until six months had passed. Guess what? It was seven months. Her work lasted that long! There weren't any obvious signs of the color growing out (not like the distinct rings within a tree's trunk) and my haircut's shape lasted that long as well! I read a Bridgerton book in between visits while vacationing in Hawaii and was flushed enough to not bring the book home with me for fear that my voracious readers of Captain Underpants would get ahold of it (thus, I left it for housekeeping to deal with it). So I knew that it would just be Vicky and me yakking it up while I sat in her chair without any reading or Netflix interruptions. As I moved to the bay area and started looking up many places, Vicky's profile caught my eye with her beautifully done natural coloring style. I like having delicate babylights with low maintenance so that I can simply let my hair grow out and only color once or twice a year. I wore my hair tied back bc it was such a terrible cut - it actually made me look older and crazier than I am. My friend was like, why are you letting white girls cut your hair, find an Asian girl...who's younger than you (lol)." I researched tons of stylists, contacted three. One was booked for MONTHS, one wasn't taking new clients and then there was Vicky. She was booked but after I told her about my horrible cut, she squeezed me in. Literally, it was like a 7PM appointment after she had worked alllll day. My hair was pretty short already so she was like ok, gonna do my best. It was a 30 min consult bc she wanted to be sure she could do something I liked. 30/40 min to cut and style. It was magic. Adorable cut - I saved her in my contacts as "hair fixer." I'm a person who cares about my hair very very much (I haven't done any hair job for 4 years before I saw other stylist and ruined my hair) especially I had a very bad balayage with other instagram hyped stylist which totally ruined my hair. Because I have box dyed my hair and Vicky was honest and patient enough to explain everything very clear for me maybe I will not get the result I desired and she told me what she thought is best for me. I agreed with her and let her do whatever she needs to do. The result is just perfect and flawless even better than what I expected. The color is just perfect and most important it's still heathy! (After I have bleach my whole head elsewhere and boxed dyed 3 months ago.) I can tell from my own experience that Vicky's place is not like the internet hyped hair places which they post different layers of filter instagram hair pictures (all fake) (because I have tried and the failed me with brassy, chunky and damaged hair). The thing that took my attention when I checked Vicky's works is that I can tell all the pictures were taken under either natural sunlight or room light without adding special edits, and I know this is the real and truly color I will get. After I had my hair done with her the pictures she took from the back is not even better than what I see my hair in the mirror. For me this is important because I have been fooled by fake pictures and paid hundreds of dollars just to damage my hair. A long time ago, I colored my black hair at a different salon and was not happy with the way it turned out. The brownish color was steely, unnatural, and did not transition well with my normal hair color. I came to have a color consultation with Vicky, and she introduced me to her signature sunkissed high lift method which would be perfect for someone who wanted something stylish yet natural-looking and subtle. The fact that the high lift method didn't require bleach was also a key factor in my decision to try this process. At the beginning of the coloring appointment, we did a quick strip test on a small section of my hair. It was a bit difficult to tell what the final result would be since the sample size was small and the color hadn't been left in the hair for as long. However, I had seen plenty of other clients before me with their finished hair color and had a good idea of what to expect. Vicky is extremely focused, thorough, and great at what she does. Her technique works well with dark or Asian hair and I loved the results. At the end of the appointment, Vicky took the time to style my hair two different ways so that I'd be able to see how the color looked in the light when straight and curled. I wasn't really sure what color i wanted - i was going for an ash brown look but didn't know which type of ash brown if that makes sense. anyway, vicky told me that she would definitely try but that she couldn't make any promises about the color because everyone's hair responds differently to the bleach, which i totally understood. and she also mentioned that alot of photos on IG are pretty deceiving because of the lighting and editing etc. i loved the openness and honesty she provided right from the start. my hair is black virgin hair so i wasnt expecting too much, but she was able to get basically exactly what i wanted. the pic i posted is pretty deceiving though (she was right) as in it looks like my hair is more light brown but IRL its actually an ashy brown color. i love it. and whats more is that she did this sorta ombre thing where she used three colors on my hair to transition it smoothly so that i could keep my roots dark (low maintenance) and still have the seamless transition to the ash. you cant see it super well in the photo, but its really cool how the colors blend SO WELL. ugh i cannot say enough good things about vicky's work. she is the sweetest and i highly recommend her for any of your hair needs. some tips - if you're bleaching, wear clothing you dont mind sweating in as she will leave the ac off to get your natural body heat to process/bleach your hair (i liked this because i don't like the use of any more chemicals/machines than necessary in the process, but it can definitely get a little toasty!) bring a mask/bandana thing if you're sensitive to smells. i totally forgot about the hair salon chemical smells (it's been awhile since i last did anything to my hair). the bleach smell is super strong so bring a mask if that bothers you. read more

I came in now knowing too much, but left with a better sense of what my options were. She helped me decide on doing a high lift, which was the perfect option for me because I am a college student out of state and was looking for something low-maintenance. I've been to my share of hair stylists and salons but Vicky is by far one of the most detail oriented and crafty stylist in the San Jose area--she is, by definition, a hair painting artist. Her location is not fancy or inviting (small salon across Denny's) but the lack of curb appeal is rebutted by her personal charm and coloring imagination. Her imagination is not limited to bright color dying-highlighting (i.e. unicorn) but to techniques like color corrections, melts, and ombré-balayage. Her pricing is one of the most fair in the area considering the time input and her skill level. For this specific visit, she performed a collaboration of different color techniques that ultimately ended up correcting streaky, bleached highlights and melting/touching it all up into my previous color treatments. We spent about 30 mins consulting while she came up with a game plan. The entire visit took about 5-6 hours and I paid $180 flat. She is amazing. The photos don't do it justice! read more
