One of the best haircuts I've had in years. Mei took the time to understand how my hair grows and what I was looking for. She gave me a cut that is easy to style in multiple ways and still looks professional. As a Chinese American, it was also great being able to converse with her in Cantonese throughout the appointment. She has been cutting hair for over 20 years, including many years in Flushing, New York before moving to Orlando, and her experience definitely shows. I was visiting from Ohio and specifically looked for an Asian salon. Hair Code is truly a hidden gem. I would give zero stars if I could. I booked an appointment with Iris a month in advance for a specific time slot, only to be told upon arrival that she couldn't see me because "other clients had been waiting too long." What is the point of an appointment if the stylist cannot manage their schedule? Instead of apologizing for her poor time management, Iris used the holiday season as an excuse and even had the audacity to suggest I let someone else cut my hair because I was "in a rush." As a business professional, understanding the basic concept of an appointment is mandatory. If you value your time, stay away from Haircode and specifically Iris. Deeply disappointed in the lack of professionalism and basic customer service. read more

Overall I'll give five stars but in all candor was right between four and five. Let me explain why. First, I was a walk-in for a men's haircut and they worked me right in which I really appreciate. Granted, a stylist wasn't busy so it just happened they could do it (as they told me, I was "very lucky) but still, nice move on their part. The salon is nice but small, slightly cluttered. You can tell per their services and prices they're higher-end but they don't bother with being super-frilly high-end look like some salons--most good Asian-owned salons seem to forego this which is fine with me. I was whisked right back for a shampoo which the assistant did a marvelous job of then I met with the stylist herself. I showed her photos of what I wanted and she set to work. Now, the end results are very good--what I wanted basically. However, she insisted on blow drying and styling my hair as basically a pompadour even though I told her several times I do not use a blow dryer at all, I style my hair wet with pomade. Part may have been that I suspect English isn't her native language but still . . . I finally asked for a broad-toothed comb, water spray bottle, and some pomade and fixed it myself. The photos I showed her did not indicate a pompadour, either. I think since a man's cut includes blow dry they think it has to be done, I don't know. So, all in all, very good work and at $30 base price (and I gave her a 20% tip) better deal than comparable higher-end salons, however, the bit about insisting on a blow dry irked me. Other stylists were doing color for other customers and I know enough about color to know that they were doing a stellar job of it, too. So yeah, would recommend overall--highly--but communicate clearly and be adamant about exactly what you want, too. read more

I recently visited a salon that moved from New York and it's the closest I have found in Orlando to what I experienced in New York. During my visit, the person who washed my hair did a great job, but it felt like they were in a bit of a rush as they didn't wash my hair thoroughly until the last time. My hair stylist was an older lady who was nice, but she didn't ask me much about the hairstyle I wanted. As a result, we had to fix it a little bit at the end. Additionally, she left me on the chair for a little while to attend to another customer. While I understand they were busy, I would have appreciated more communication. I went to try the deep conditioning treatment. I personally brush my hair prior to getting my hair done because it is thick and I want it to be easy. I may have missed a few knots of my own but my hair is naturally straight with frizz but it was visibly brushed....at most I would've have one or two knots under. The person who washed my hair was aggressive and would ball up my long thick hair in the washing bowl....when I wash my hair in the shower I am brushing at the same time to prevent knots. When I got to the chair a different person who was the stylist (a tall older Asian man with dyed hair assisted by older Asian woman) both looked at my hair after washing and had a look on their face like they're were upset or annoyed and talked to each other in their own language. AFTER the hair was washed I had knots ALL over that was visible on top of my head. They began brushing my wet, tangled hair from TOP to BOTTOM and YANKING it to try to detangle. A comb was used instead of a detangler brush and no detangling spray ???? It was painful. What is the point of getting a treatment to have healthy hair if in the process I will have wet hair being aggressively pulled. Hair is fragile when wet and more prone to breakage so explain that.... I was surrounded by people yanking at my hair while speaking around me in a language I can't understand. They have a right to speak their language however they were doing so WHILE actively working on a client ...they were talking AROUND me while I'm literally sitting in the conversation space. It would've been more appropriate to step aside away from me and do that. I was uncomfortable from the pain of the aggressive brushing and from feeling excluded. I offered to help brush and mentioned "I find it helps to brush from top to bottom" but they responded "ohh yeahh" with a polite laugh ....but it wasn't a yes or not question so either they didn't hear me, didn't understand me, or couldn't care less. I wanted to get my hair done to feel pretty because I've been stressed and came out feeling worse. I was only one of two clients at the time so they weren't in a rush. When they would put my hair in some steam device for the deep conditioning they would just do it, they wouldn't tell me how long I'd be there or ask if I'm okay or anything ....almost as if I were just a mannequin. The second time for the steaming it wasn't even on for about 10 min but the whole experience was so intimidating I didn't wanna speak at that point. They figured it out and turned it one but didn't say anything to me ...I expected a "sorry it wasn't one ....just ten more minutes" but i got nothing.... The haircut was nice and the stylist only actually started speaking to me towards the end. He went from annoyed to decent but I was already upset by that point. I still tipped because I'm just used to it (and they're staring right at me while waiting for me to select the option) but this sort of thing is getting me out of that habit and not wanting to do that anymore. I usually cut my own hair and go to a salon just once a year, but I was going to a wedding and needed a professional to clean up my hair--just a quick trim that should only take about 30 minutes. I was looking for a place that does Asian hair well since my hair is thick, and this place popped up in my search. I arrived a few minutes early for my appointment, greeted a staff member and was told to sit on a couch in the waiting area. It was very busy, so I unfortunately had to wait 45 minutes to finally get seated for my haircut. None of the staff members spoke a word to me or made eye contact during this time. A customer who arrived half an hour after me was seated before me. Not sure if this is how they treat new customers, but it would have been courteous to at least receive some kind of communication that I would have to wait. My simple haircut took 30 minutes and cost $42 without tip. The lady who did my hair apologized profusely for the wait. She was very kind, efficient, and skilled. My hair turned out pretty much how I imagined it should be. We connected well because I understood and spoke some Chinese. At least the visit ended on a good note, but I hope they can improve on communication and time-management with their customers. read more

I have not been to this salon for the first time , I like that you can sign up any day and at any time , I forgave them their unprofessionalism at some points for their normal prices , but today I left out of there , I have been dissatisfied with it. My hair has not been laid to the end and my bag has been ruined with paint . Some of the masters took it in hand and put it in the marks, I couldn't convince the Director and she didn't even want to pay me for a ruined bag. I had an amazing first experience that I decided to come back for my second haircut after 6 months. I've been on the lookout for a new salon. The first time I went I saw a younger stylist who took extra care, was very attentive and delicate. She took note of what style I was looking for and advised what she thought was suitable. I was highly satisfied with the results. The only thing that turned me off was the lack of cleanliness after each client. There were piles of hair all over the ground. Not much changed this second time either. This second time I had an older lady who was scatterbrained and would stop mid-cut to go take a sip of water. She asked if I had a pic of what I was looking for (I pulled out my phone and she walked away and came back after 2 minutes), I showed her and she pulled out her phone and suggested something else. It was similar so I said sure. I'm all for giving the stylist some creative freedom because I know it will not be exactly the same. She started to hack off my hair, tugged and snagged as she snipped away. She started using her thinning shears and haphazardly took chunks of hair out. She started to blow dry my hair and I could see steam and smell burnt hair. She stopped and started curling my hair... The pic did not show curly hair. Then she pulled out a mirror flashed the back and asked if I liked it. It was all curled, which she used to hide the flaws. I washed my hair 2 days later and it looks like a total mess. It's shapeless (except this severe V formation) and scraggly from the over thinning shears. The process was sloppy from start to finish. The only redeeming part was when another person washed my hair, it was relaxing and thoroughly done. Getting my haircut is already anxiety ridden as is, and this only solidifies my reasons why. Never again.. BEWARE. I will specifically ask for the first stylist or try my luck at a different place. I'm already looking to get a new cut, thank goodness my hair grows fast. read more

I am OBSESSED with this place! Was visiting from out of town for the weekend and realized Orlando is much less expensive than my home town. After 3 years of growing my hair out and keeping it natural for my wedding, I was desperate to go back to a bob and inject some fun color back into my hair. They were able to take me the same day I called, even though what I wanted was going to take time (about 8 hours when all was said and done). I have naturally curly, super thick hair that came down to the bottom of my shoulder blades. Natural color is a dark blonde and I had some highlights with about 4-5 inches of growth. Not every stylist knows what to do with that right away, but the Hair Code team knows their stuff! They talked me through the process, how they would cut my hair given my curl pattern, things to be aware of with the current highlights, what to expect from the final result... I used to dye and cut my hair all the time before the getting engaged, so I'd learned a lot of this information through mistakes and experience with other salons, but I've NEVER had stylists be so thorough with their consultation before! And the way Iris and Jason worked as a team - going back and forth during cut and color, not for advice, but jumping in and helping each other during down time/processing time with other clients - it was seamless. You can tell they've been working well together for quite some time. During my appointment, I found out they recently came to Orlando from New York which is why they happened to be available, but I expect with this quality of work they will book up quickly! I, for one, will absolutely be back the next time I'm in Orlando. My hair feels INCREDIBLE and the cut is exactly what I wanted! A few days later I went back to color my hair. I went in with dry damaged brittle hair and left with amazing shiny healthy looking hair with fabulous highlights!! LITERALLY SLAYED MY HAIR!! They did such an amazing job even though my hair was so complicated from previous dyes. My hair had blonde pieces in the front and the rest was dark brown, but the final product was so even you couldn't even tell! Even though the process took so long, they were very patient with my hair and thorough, treating it in between bleaches so I could have healthier hair.
