While I have yet to actually schedule an appointment with Lora, I write to say that she is so caring, thorough, and professional. One may ask, if this is the case, why didn't you move forward with an in person appointment, then? The reason is simple, right as I was at the cusp of booking an appointment with Lora, my husband surprised me with a salon service elsewhere. I didn't NOT want to take advantage of his Mother's Day gift to me, or seem unappreciative. What I appreciate about my interaction with Lora is that she was tremendously responsive, very knowledgeable, and sensitive to curly hair needs. After years of driving an hour or more to L.A. for a Devacut, I relentlessly searched for a local curly cerified stylist, as great as the one I had in L.A. who previously worked for Devachan salon. I am VERY picky with my hair and whom I allow to touch it, I don't mind how much I have to spend when it comes to the care of my hair. With that being said, I found Lora and after reading through her great reviews, I made the choice to call her! Now - she ISN'T Deva certified however she gave me the BEST cut I think I've EVER had!! She's VERY through and cares about your cut! She conducted a pretty lengthy phone consultation with me prior to even making an appointment. Exchanged lots of pictures and she explained to me her process. From this, she was able to determine if what I wanted was possible and what she had to do. She then had me go into the salon in Rancho, where she currently only works on Wednesday's, to see my hair, do a color test (as I wanted highlights as well) all free of charge and THEN she scheduled me to go in two weeks later. I wanted volume, she delivered. I wanted a specific shape and she gave my wishes. She cuts some hair straight across, however I wanted mine to remain at a point and she said ok! She also gave me almost exactly the color I was looking for with very minimal damage as she cares about the health of your hair too. This is truly her passion and it shows! Lora is amazing! I've been trying to cut my curly hair short since my daughter was born but it's always ended up looking so bad that I end up in a baseball cap or straightening my hair. I started coming to Lora for cuts in 2018 and I have never has such a detailed cut like I have with her. This woman is phenomenal! Her method of cutting is revolutionary. Although her cutting style was extremely different, it was the most efficient cut I have ever received in my life. She cut my hair in its natural state and after that I was sold on her abilities. I'm not going to lie, I was a bit skeptical considering the ethnicity differences (most people who aren't Black struggle with Black hair), but she got in there and knew exactly what she was doing. After the short two hour period, she wasn't trying to push her products on me or anything, which I appreciated extremely. Curly girls and ESPECIALLY black women, listen up: Lora Johnson is not just a talented hairstylist, but she is a gifted artist! Her schedule is tight, so just take my word for it and book your appointment now! When I first contacted Lora she asked me to text her pictures of myself along with some hairstyles I might want to try. She did this to get an idea about my bone structure, hair type, etc. After doing so, we spoke by phone and she told me things about my hair and my face that I didn't even know like my eyes being a little uneven with each other (who knew?!) , my hair being fine, its current length weighing me down, where I should part my hair to even out my eyes, how my hair should frame my face to help "shorten" my nose, etc. She also sent me a couple of pictures of styles she thought would suit me well. I'm giving you the short version, but Lora really went into a deep consult on that first call. Convinced that she knew what she was talking about, I booked an appt. Fast forward about a month and I've just had my first cut from Lora. I'm not exaggerating when I say I couldn't be happier with the results, either! Here, let me run you through the appointment: When I first walked in, she'd just finished a 20-something white woman's curly hair and it was positively gorgeous! Next, she worked her magic on another white woman's curls and cut her hair (she works fast as lightening so the wait wasn't long at all. The 3 of us actually enjoyed pleasant conversation while I marveled at her expertly doing her thing.) I'll admit that I felt a tiny bit of apprehension as she'd worked wonders on two white women and, being white herself, I was wondering if she'd struggle with my hair's texture. I knew from the reviews here and from my gut after our phone convo that she was capable, but still, you know how the mind can make you nervous about these things, lol. Prior to the appointment, I'd found another hairstyle that included bangs on my own-- somewhat different from the styles either of us had selected before. After showing her the picture, Lora immediately measured my face with her hands to give me her opinion of how it would look on my face. To my relief, she agreed that it would work and then she went to work. She started cutting and sculpting my hair dry asking me every step of the way for input to be certain that I was getting the length, shape and style I wanted. She explained the importance of starting the process from "where I was" i.e. without combing my curls or washing my hair first as there'd be too much shrinkage doing it any other way and that could be a disaster. I knew this, but was relieved that she did too... this meant we were on the right track for natural black hair! After shaping it, Lora washed my hair, diffused it (I'd never diffused before, but now I'm hooked) and snipped a little more just to finalize the look. When she was done, I was ecstatic. My hair was butt length and had no real style when I walked in, but I walked out with waist length hair, bangs and feeling like a new woman. It had taken me a long time to grow my hair to its original length, but between our phone consultation and the early part of my visit, Lora convinced me that that length wasn't doing anything for my look and that people weren't even seeing all of it (no room here to explain, but she was right... they were only seeing a certain focal point). Lora is honest and REALLY knows her stuff when it comes to kinky/curly hair. Beyond the shampoo/conditioner, Lora only used one product on my hair... I usually use between two or four after washing! She also did not try to sell me on any products, but did hip me to the one that she used today and recommends for my hair in the future. I could go on and on about her gifted approach to black hair, but I really enjoyed her uplifting and inspiring conversation, as well. I was honestly a little sad when she told me I don't need another visit for at least a year, possibly two! Before I sign off let me tell you that the best part of the entire day was hearing her testimony about how she started doing kinky/curly hair in the first place... I'll let her tell it to you in person, but I'll just say to my sistas out there that this woman was sent to us by assignment. She didn't learn about our hair through classroom theory or any special training, but was gifted with the ability all the same! I went to Lora a couple of weeks ago and just wanted to share with everybody how amazing the whole experience was . To start out I called her and she called me right back and gave me next day appointment, what was great was that she asked me to bring all my hair products so she could go through them with me which she very patiently did painstakingly trying each and everyone on her hand and giving her input about each . To start out her assistant mapped my face . I loved that technology , it helped her guide my cut according to my face structure not that I think Lora needs too much help . What I want to share with eveybody is the advice she gave me for dandruff . She taught me to actually bathe in a tub where I was soaking my hair for some time instead of shower and I think that does wonders for the problem if one can find the time to do it Now coming to her cut , it was great , brought our my curls like never before and seemed so easy to do when she did it. She really is a miracle worker for curly hair . I had requested my front layers to be left a little longer and she did that on my request but after my hair dried I realized that they should have been shorter .She volunteered to reschedule me at another time to totally take care of that and I plan to go back to her for it. When I want to Lora I had really problematic, dry & overprocessed hair. Shes excellent with color correction changing my hair from orange to a pretty blonde and fixed the ends. My hair is finally healthy and has grown back long, shiny & still very blonde. She does excellent work and Ill never go to another hair dresser again! I've been going to Lora for three years now and I'm always satisfied by her perfectionist ways of getting my hair just how I wanted it. She's a bit costly but definitely worth it. After I arrived and we discussed it more I told her go for it. She did what I asked and left it a bit longer in the back for my comfort. Well, fast forward to Tuesday. I was happy with my cut but after playing with it I realized Lora was right and it needed to be shorter. She was so great and took me in on the next day she had an opening. She went through my hair again and shortened it and now it is perfect. She did such an awesome job. Can't wait to see her again for my next perfect cut. I have been seen by Lora for the past 3 years. She is great and its very evident that she knows what she is doing. She listens to what I want and we have tried many things with my curly hair. From long to short cuts and played w/color too. She cuts my hair dry, combs out the curls and cuts it symetricaly. Its very interesting to see her work as she goes. LISTEN UP CURLIES...........I spent years relaxing my hair thinking that was the only way I could manage my curls. Turns out the problem was having my hair cut by stylists who didn't know how to work with curly hair. I had been to cheap salons and uber expensive fancy salons and my hair just never looked the way I wanted/thought it could. Most stylist were honestly afraid to cut my hair because not only do I have a LOT of hair but I have pretty tight curls. Then I found Lora Johnson (on Naturallycurly.com). She saved my hair! Now my curls are soft and healthy and completely transformed. I used to relax my hair and now would never think of doing so! I only have to cut my hair once a year. I found out about Lora thru Yelp. I have been wanting my hair to be cut by a person who has experience on cutting curly hair near my neighborhood. I will admit that I was scared when I went to get my hair done by her, mainly because it was a person I found on the internet. I got Lora's number from a salon she works at in Rancho, The Hair Inn Salon. I called her and she was the sweets person I have ever talked to on the phone and in person. Lora asked to send pictures of my face with my hair pulled back, a profile, back view of my hair, and front. She also asked for pictures I would like my haircut to be. Once, I send these pictures she went over what she saw in the photos both the photos that one sent of myself and the photos of how I wanted my hair to be. The day of the haircut Lora reanalyzed my face structure and already studied the photos of how i would like my hair to be and she told me that she would do some slight adjustments from the photos I sent, due to my face structure. I realized that she mainly wanted the haircut to compliment ones facial structure. Once, she took the first snip, I got excited to see what was going to happen. Lora cut my hair in different angles, I personally never had my hair cut in this way, which was absolutely unique. I ABSOLUTLY LOVVVVEEEE MY NEW HAIR!!! It came out better then I ever I ever imagine!
