I found Hair Matters per a friend's recommendation! Jacky, the salon owner, is really nice. He speaks English, Cantonese, and Vietnamese. He's had the salon for a decade, so he is experienced. You can easily schedule an appointment with him with a text message (the phone number on the Yelp page). I was able to walk-in and he got started right away. I just needed a chop and thinning and he was able to do just that. I think he primarily cuts men's hair, but he's still able to do basic women cuts. Hair Matters is affordable too! read more

I've been coming to Jacky for the past couple of years. I was looking for a place bc I have bangs, and when they get in my eyes, I want to cut them. First I was skeptical coming here bc I only see guys come here haha. But I got to know Jacky and he tells me he cuts his daughter's hair all the time. His daughter is in her 20s (i think). Came by on a Saturday afternoon and got my haircut from Jackie. There was only one person ahead of me so the wait wasn't long, but soon there were three people waiting after me while there's only one barber. Jackie gave me a good cut at my request of a combover cut and a 1 on the side with fade. He also texturized my hair to add volume and used different buzzers to achieve a short cut around the ears and back of head. He knew how to cut the cow-lick part of my hair so it wouldn't protrude. Overall, it was a great cut, which I was in and out within 20 mins. We also chit chatted a bit, but Jackie was always concentrating to make sure the haircut is what I envisioned. I've been coming here a few times now, and Tony is the man! A local barber with an expert touch, he's really quick and efficient. His many years of experience shows with each haircut. The first few times, I showed him pictures of what I wanted. He was able to recreate those cuts perfectly! After regularly coming here for the last year, he knows what I want and is able to do it right every time, like the first time. It's $15, which is totally fine considering COVID circumstances and how he's a one-man show. However, it's way worth it and he deserves all the support he can get! My husband has been going to a Hair Matters for over 8 years for haircuts. First when Tony was around and now Jacky as his barber. We no longer live in a Monterey Park but my husband drives there just to get his haircut. Jacky is always friendly and does a fantastic job and my husband is always happy. Tony was good but Jacky I think is even better. Show Jackie a photo and he replicates it perfectly. He's skilled and has been doing this for years. For $15-$16 dollars it's the best haircut you could get. Keep in mind you might still walk away needing to shower and change your clothes from prickly hair but for $15-$16 that's expected. On a side note for those wondering what happened to Tony, he unfortunately passed away due to illness and now Jacky runs the place. Sad Tony is gone but Jacky is still providing great work. The original owner Tony passed away a few years ago. So the new guy, jacky took over the place. The problem is, Jacky doesn't know how to cut hair. He would mess up your hair and get mad if you point it out. He doesn't know how to trim your bang. He would cut your bang straight across, then attempt to cut an angled bang. Since he won't stand in front of you to do the cut, your bang will look like an upside down pyramid which looks ridiculous. I am a guy. So I don't mind cutting it a bit shorter to get it fixed. I can also style my hair up to make it look better. Anyway, You should not go there unless you are a 70 years old grandpa. Also, he never clean his tools, you will get face warts if he uses the brush to sweep away the hair off your face. This place should be blacklisted. Period. read more

He's been doing this for over 30 years and his intuition with hair is great. This review is during the COVID-19 pandemic. Came in on a quiet Wednesday afternoon and overall had a great experience with Tony. Most importantly, I felt safe getting my haircut as both Tony and I wore masks the whole time. I showed him an ideal haircut picture and Tony was able to replicate it with accurate detail. Tony was very pleasant. He's been cutting hair for 40+ years --- he's quick but also takes good attention to detail. I was in and out within 15-20 minutes. Overall great value. Men's haircut is $15 (+a bit more for tip). This appears to have gone up over the years reading past reviews; however, appears understandable giving the recent pandemic and business costs. I feel like this guy only knows how to do one style of haircut only, if you're specific about how you want your hair he'll short circuit like a deer in headlights and you'll still get a haircut that ain't anything close to what you asked for. He got a little mad when I asked him to redo my hair when I didn't like the end result, I asked for an undercut and got a bowl cut, he's like this is an undercut, just put gel on it. We live in Thousand Oaks now, and we still go to Hair Matters whenever we're in the SGV to visit my parents. It's never packed whenever we come, but this mom & pop shop always has 1 or 2 guys waiting to get their hair cut. It's a typical hair cut place but with a lot of cool anime style art and little panda drawings on the walls. The barbers are the best. Polite, quiet, and they won't make you talk to them if you don't want to - which is perfect for my husband who doesn't like making idle small talk. While both barbers are good, my husband prefers the older man, who finishes a quality cut within 10 minutes. Hair cuts are about $10 dollars and we usually give a $1-2 tip. What a deal for a consistent and fast haircut. We've been to supercuts, fantastic sams, and other local shops in the sgv, la and ventura county - Hair Matters is unmatched in the quality, speed and value of the service they provide. I finally decided to try somewhere new and found this place on Yelp. I walked in around 2pm and there were two gentlemen working. I really wanted to like this place. Normally I get my hair cut by Kathy at Silver Scissors in El Monte and she always does a fine job, but she is always overbooked due to her popularity. I figured it was time to try someplace new. One of my coworkers has the prettiest hair so I asked her where she goes for her haircuts and she recommended this place. Hair Matters is located relatively close to our office so I dropped by after work without an appointment on a Tuesday afternoon. An older gentleman (who I believe is the owner) was the only barber manning the store. When I arrived he was working on an older lady with two guys waiting ahead of me. I waited about half an hour until it was my turn. I asked for a shorter hairstyle, just below shoulder-length, layered, and with long bangs (I even pulled up a few photos I saved on Instagram for reference). I had assumed he would ask if I wanted my hair washed but he went straight to work. My hair is very thick and unruly (with summer just around the corner, I wanted a fresh new look without my long hair weighing me down) and through experience I know that my haircuts typically do not turn out well if cut dry. He spritzed my hair here and there, snip snip snipped away, and voila. It was hideous. Okay hideous is kind of exaggerating but it was definitely not what I had in mind for a short haircut. The back actually looked somewhat okay, length was at about my shoulders which was what I asked for, but the bangs were choppy and short, certainly much shorter than my initial instruction for LONG bangs. There was virtually no inner layering done to lighten up the weight of my thick hair and the outer layer was ear length all around my head. No styling after the cut. Basically, I looked like a shaggy dog. Cleanup was virtually nonexistent. I left with bits of hair all over my clothes and face. Needless to say, I was pretty disappointed with my experience at Hair Matters. My middle school self would have cried all the way home. Overall, this barbershop definitely seems to be more suited for male clientele. I was watching the barber work on the guys ahead of me while I waited and he does seem to be rather skilled with a razor. However, I don't think he makes much of an effort to keep up with current trends for the ladies, so the most I can recommend for us girls is a basic trim. For $15, it probably could've been worse. Nevertheless, the next time I need a haircut I'll probably go ahead and shell out the extra cash at a reputable salon for a wash, cut, and style that I'll actually like. read more

I would prefer to give this place , but mostly the man I had cut my hair , a 0 star review . Please be warned that if you are a woman they do not have the experience necessary . The younger man had never cut my hair up until today , I've had okay experiences with the older gentleman. This man didn't know how to separate my hair , and didn't understand what I wanted clearly . He acknowledged that it would be short , which is was for how long my hair was , but he went even shorter . Wayyyy shorter than what was shown in the photo. I asked that my hair be split as I'm prefer a middle part instead of a side part and he did not understand so he just never parted it and I still have a side part. He asked if I wanted layers and a cut on my bangs but at that point I was already mad as I could tell that the back was way shorter than it should have been. I said no and he kept asking me and I said no one last time because I wanted to leave already. And he says " just a bowl?" So he knew that he was giving me a bowl cut essentially and not at all what I had asked for. I think he sensed that I was mad so he didn't even out the back which is what you see in the photo. It is disgusting and I don't think he knew what he was doing at all from how his technique was. People like him should not cut hair if they don't have the skills to do so or experience. If a woman comes in asking for a cut say that you don't know how to and pass her off to someone who does rather than fuck up her hair. He blow dried my hair and instead of using brushes to style my hair he used his fingers .. This place used to be good but unfortunately the guy cutting hair has a terrible attitude. I used to come here for several years and tip $5 on a $15 haircut. He would often ignore your requests in terms of length in certain areas. Recently I asked if I could get some hairspray and immediately he had a terrible face on him. The hairspray was useless. Nozzle was blocked. He then offered me some dollar store hair gel. The hygiene is questionable here too. There's no sanitizing between customers and there's hair caked into most surfaces. This is the haircut place that I've been going to for 4+ years. The owner (I think his name is Tony) is very skilled hardworking. Open everyday with very few days off. I will admit that it would be to your benefit if you spoke Cantonese since his English is not the best, but nevertheless I don't speak any Chinese and he still understands what I want. The first few times that you go in you will probably have to tell him how short to cut your hair, or what style you are going for, but after a few visits he has a general idea and sometimes doesn't even need to ask. When I walk in now, I sit down and he asks me, "same?" I'm just say "same." and he gets to work. He always ends every haircut by saying "mmm, perfect!" which I find very nice. He usually works by himself. I've seen other hairdressers in the shop before, but usually everybody asks for Tony. That being said, it can get busy at times, but he is very fast and I usually don't wait more than 30 minutes to be seated even when it is packed. This place used to be $8 when I first started coming here but has gone up in the past few years to $10, and currently it's at $12. Sometimes Tony goes on vacation and is gone for maybe 2 or 3 weeks at a time, but he usually has a sign up in advance to let you know. read more

I was one of those kids whose parents gave that God-awful bowl cut to. It was so traumatic, I cried the entire evening and was depressed the following day. I developed a hatred towards having short hair and have favored only female characters with long hair (like Sailor Mars, Catwoman, and Sarah Kerrigan). I met Vicky Trieu at Hacienda La Puente Cosmetology/Barber School. I was a Cosmetology student and she was an instructor - an excellent one, btw. So I came here via Yelp reviews and since I really really really wanted a major change in my hair style-- I mean I've had the same lame hair since what 7th grade? I wanted something trendy, yet conservative since I got some major azn parents that were strict on almost everything you can imagine. After reading the reviews, I made an appointment-- which btw, you totally should make an appointment ASAP if you plan on getting your hair did because VICKY (the AMAZING hair stylist) is pretty booked-- since she answered like four calls while doing my hair. After telling my concerns to Vicky, she immediately had an idea what I wanted and kept in mind of what would look good for me-- which was really awesome. On top of that, she speaks very good English and she's hilarious. Seriously, she cracked me up-- even if it was at 11 A.M when I was partially asleep. Nonetheless, she is very ATTENTIVE and CAREFUL at what she does; in fact, after being almost done with my hair, she had to get her scissors out just to get a quick snip at a strand of hair that was sticking out. Based on Vicky's personality and quality of service, she isn't just a typical SGV stylist that speaks broken English-- but she is also somebody that is like an understand friend that listens to your needs and one hell of an EPIC/AMAZING stylist (for men). As for pricing, it's ~$15. It's a pretty decent pricing for somebody that'll truly understand your needs along with the latest trends of men's hair. The location was quiet and had tons of parking in the private lot.
