I came in with a general idea of what I wanted and what I needed- something low maintenance that could look professional but could also be a more edgy when I'm not working. Clay started cutting and all of a sudden I looked in the mirror and said "Wow".. it was a little longer than I was imagining but sooo cute and perfect! I am sold and very excited to have a new hairdresser with this kind of talent. The salon is also a very pleasant environment. It's quaint, comfortable and relaxing. There are a lot of shops in the area. I thought parking was going to be difficult for that reason, but it was a breeze. I found a great spot about a block away. I just wanted a trim (nothing new right before an interview!). Mary listened to what I wanted and gave me exactly that. I left feeling like a million bucks and received several compliments that evening. Mary is such a warm and interesting person. I also really like that this salon is earth-friendly. I was not getting any coloring done, but we had a lengthy conversation about the ecological and health impacts of hair color. She is very knowledgeable about both. They messed up my hair, and by they, I mean there was literally two people cutting my hair at the…read moresame time. I asked for a trim. One person (Jackie) cutting the right side told me she didn't have her cosmology degree. The left side was cut by (Maryanne) who apparently was trying to teach Jackie how to cut hair. This was not anything I had agreed to. They just sat me down in the chair and started in. They also were pretty boisterous and oddly insulting about my hair. I asked Jackie to stop cutting because I could see how horrid she was at cutting hair, but she wouldn't stop. But once you sit down and people have started cutting, it's not easy to stop them. The left side by Maryanne is okay. Although she cut more off than I asked, and she didn't stick just with a trim because she tried to do damage control for Jackie's mistakes. The right side by Jackie is hideous, with huge chunky layers cut into it. Maryanne, (the experienced hairdresser) admonished Jackie, (the one without a degree), saying to her "remember how good my side looked before I tried to fix your side". I knew some damage had been done but wasn't sure how much, because they styled my hair in a way that covered up the mistake. I was charged 75 dollars and had to tip two separate people on top of that. As I left I was told they could fix any problem, to just to come back. But when I came back the next day and tried to talk with them. Jackie was hostile and said I asked her to cut the right side that way, while Maryanne accused me of making a scene although I didn't even raise my voice. I then was bullied out of the door by a burly mean acting guy. Later that day I received a phone call from Maryanne (the experienced hairdresser who had done the left side). She appeared drunk or to be dealing with mental health issues. I tired to discuss my concerns with her, and she said something like "I'd rather talk about anything else than your hair, can we talk about the war in Syria?" Like seriously? No. Maryanne refused to see the problem with what had happened (they basically used my hair to teach somebody without a degree). To this Maryanne said "But I Love Jackie". And "you don't need a license to cut hair". She refused a refund, even partially. Kept saying she "had to go" but then kept talking. Just to get her off the phone I told her I'd consider having her cut it again in some random point in time, after the much-too- short pieces from Jackie's chop-job grow out. But honestly I am not planning on ever going back there, I don't see how I'd ever trust anybody from that shop near my hair in the future.

The best results seem to happen when I give him a general length or tell him what I hate about it and he fixes it, rather than laying out exactly what I want. Seriously, he usually knows better, but does what I want him to anyway, and then I wish I had just let him do his thing. He also approaches cutting hair like it's a science project--an endeavor that requires complete concentration. He'll take breaks to talk, rather than trying to do two things at the same time. Their resident colorist guru is also quite fantastic--it took her an hour and a half, but she gave me the most subtle radiant highlights, the kind that grow out without leaving any sort of ugly roots. Head First underwent a significant renovation a while ago and the interior now looks quite pink and frou frou which is a bit at-odds with the style of the staff. It's comfy though, and I don't mind spending an hour in there. They are also incredibly reasonably priced, especially for the quality they deliver. It may look like your grandma's hair salon (and yes, my grandma has gotten her hair cut here too, but she's more hip and awesome than your grandma), but it's hidden gem in the hair world. Newell will give you a cut that looks great on you specifically--just trust him to do it.
