While everything has remained mostly the same, food quality good, service always friendly, ambiance still so so, the price and quantity of the dishes has increased to where it is just another Middle East restaurant. The flavors were incredible and the portions were nice. My only beef was that it was loud and busy. However, that is the price for a place that is worth checking out. Haji-Baba was the first Middle Eastern restaurant I visited when I moved the Valley 20 years ago that made me say "Yes! There is good food in Phoenix." The restaurant has remained consistently excellent and inexpensive ever since. I usually get the vegan trinity - hummus, tabouli and falafel - in some combo or another. The hummus is thicker than most - maybe less tahini - but fresh and full of flavor. The tabouli is heavier on the parsley side but lightly seasoned with lemon and olive oil The falafels are the the main attraction though. Either in a pita or on a platter, they are clearly fresh (not frozen) and fried to perfection. They are crisp on the inside, soft and warm inside. The restaurant is not fancy. I think they're probably the same tables and chairs I sat in 20 years ago. But the excellent falafel pitas are only $3.99. I'd sit on the floor for that! Although they are often busy, service is efficient and friendly. You pay at the counter, so you can go shopping before cashing out! My only request is that they label items on the menu as vegan, but I've only noticed them updating the menu once in 20 years so I doubt that will happen! read more

Food was delicious! We knew as soon as we entered it was going to be good because the whole place smelled amazing! The gyro meat is delicious, and if you're wanting affordable, this place is great. You can even get a side order of just gyro meat, it comes with a lot. And their drinks are amazing! I definitely recommend the tamarind juice and the rose water lemonade. The service was a little slow, it was a Saturday night and we only saw two servers taking care of the whole place. But the shop attached to the restaurant is so wonderful, there are so many goodies to try. I'm really excited to go back, I just hope it's at a time when the service is a little more attentive or the restaurant isn't so busy. read more

Haji is a Tempe classic. A Mediterranean restaurant inside a convenience store filled with Mediterranean goods. Don't let the humble restaurant setting fool you. The chicken schwarma is the best you'll find in the area, maybe even in Arizona. The hummus is fantastic as well - very smooth and rich. The other menu items are good, but the chicken schwarma plate is GREAT. We tried this spot after another choice was closed early. We were intrigued and decided to eat in. Our server was a you g man who was quick and friendly. He explained the unknown spice on the table as "sumok" and how his Palestinian family used it. The values very good here. My gyros plate was good. My wife didn't like the hummus. I decided to go vegetarian recently, so this was a perfect choice to have some Middle Eastern food. I had the vegetarian platter which consisted of stuffed grape leaves, baba ghanouj, and falafel. For my drink I had a rose water lemonade which was interesting and refreshing. Delicious, I was so full and I had plenty leftover for later. This place is INCREDIBLE! The prices are so affordable and the food really blew me away. It's a hole in the wall place. Half of it is a grocery store with specialty middle eastern foods. There's a great selection for shopping to make a middle eastern feast at home. Here are some of my favorite things on the menu for the restaurant: 1. The falafel. These are crunchy and a perfect addition to a hummus plate. Highly recommend for the vegetarian in your crowd. Or as an appetizer to start. 2. Baklava. You can order this to-go in the grocery section or sitting at your table. I would recommend the pistachio or walnut (those are our favs). These are flakey and delicious. Love the honey on top. 3. Labneh. I love this with pita. If you've never had it it's kind of like Greek yogurt but a bit more tangy. It's addicting. Overall this place is a must when you go to Tempe. read more

Whole isles dedicated to cookies, candy and cooking oils and spices. Really great prices on bulk spices that would normally cost you the same for a tiny package. Big array of baklava, cheeses, olives etc. In the restaurant, usual gyro, kafta and shish kebab platters can sandwiches or salads. Additionally find items like shawerema and koubideh. I've eaten there many times since the early 1990's. The food is consistently good, service is great as well and the place just doesn't disappoint. Today I bought French Feta cheese for a cucumber salad I was planning to prepare. I've eaten Feta in Europe as well as in the US and I would never buy it at a regular supermarket , even Costco because it's just too dry. I hadn't been to Haji Baba in YEARS. Literally, I couldn't remember the last time I'd been and so I thought I'd change that. I met a friend of mine here who also hadn't been here in a while. I ordered the chicken shawarma sandwich, usually a standard choice to judge how the food is. Honestly, it was pretty boring and ordinary, nothing special about it. My friend ordered the falafel plate and baba ghanoush. I tried the smoky eggplant dip and liked it, it added some variety when I put it on my sandwich. I need to try more menu items to get a better feel of what they offer. You have to try this place out if you love Mediterranean food and if you are REALLY hungry. Yes come here really hungry because the portions are huge! There is a small market that is attached to the small dining area. It's not too pretty but don't let that stop you from trying out their food! We stopped by for dinner and it was starting to get busy when we arrived. There aren't too many tables but they were definitely doing their best to clean them as soon as people were done. We were helped right away and menus were given to us. They have sandwiches and a ton of entrees to pick from. We decided to order one shish kabob, one gyro plate, and a chicken schwarma plate. My chicken schwarma was delicious! It came with a ton of chicken, hummus, delicious basmati rice, and a piece of pita. My husband had the shish kabob plate and the also came with rice, grilled vegetables, and a side salad. He also had a small guava drink for $3.50 (no refill) but it was well worth it. Each plate was priced about $10 each. We spent about $45 and were there about an hour. Portions are really big and so we still had food leftover. Haji-Baba has been a staple for me for about 10 years. What I appreciate so much about this restaurant is the consistency of the food I order. Each and every time I order food, usually the chicken shawarma plate, it's great every single time. There's never been a time where I complained about the chicken being overcooked or the plate being light. They always manage to be great at what they do and never steer away from it. In addition to the food, it's also a great market for items you may not be able to get at a common grocery store. I love getting my mango nectar juice here, along with snacks because I'm a sucker for sweets lol. I've been out of Phoenix for a couple of years, but Haji Baba was amazing for Middle Eastern food. Half of it is a store, half of the restaurant. They are a Icon of the Tempe area Muslim community. The owners out of Lebanon and makes fantastic Lebanese food. When I was there they were friendly, and you could get amazing rice, and very exotic spices, you could drink Turkish coffee.
