The standard for Middle Eastern Food in Arizona! I have been eating and shopping at Haji-Baba for nearly 30 years. I am almost appalled that I haven't given them a review before. Its one of those automatic 5 star places, that you maybe just don't think about. You just know its going to be good. I once got a craving at a Halloween trick or treat party, and let it be known where i was going to grab takeout. I ended up coming back with THIRTY plates, that's how much this place is loved. For a place to be great from the time you are in College to the time you are an out-of-state grandfather is not an easy standard to live up to. We moved away from Tempe 3 years ago, and its the automatic-have-to-eat-at when we are in town kind of place. Don't forget shopping, especially for spices, as well. Our trip back to the AZ last week, it was the unanimous vote for a stop. THE FOOD: haven't ever had anything bad, but there are a few super gems to eat any time we are here. 1) CHICKEN SHAWARMA PLATE- the ultimate 5 star plate. crispy well spiced chicken shawarma, plentiful rice, hummus, flatbread, and tabbouleh salad. A couple of years ago they switched to a regular green salad, but you can still ask for and get the tabbouleh which i recommend. You would think plain rice would not be worth mentioning in a review, but its always cooked perfectly, moist super long grain rice which is a excellent accompaniment to the flavorful chicken and hummus. hummus is smooth and delicious as is the garlic sauce. I seriously used to get this all the time when we lived there. 2) Gyro Plate, best Gyro meat in the state, with all the same fixings as above. The sauce is delicious as well. Easy 5 stars. The lamb flavor comes out very tastily. 3) Gyro XL- same meat wrapped in an Egyptian flatbread (like a pita) 5 stars with the veggies and tastiness. 5 stars. well its all good but these are the stars to us. the shopping: First of all, if you don't buy your significant other a selection of their in-house made baklava, you really don't express your love enough. Pistachio, cashew, walnut, pecan are made by the trayful, and if you go late, you won't get any. Especially on Valentines, since regulars know the rule above. Easy 5 stars I love to shop for their in-house made Kalamata olives, their selection of different feta cheeses from different countries (partial to the French myself, although the Bulgarian is good also), and all the other great kitchen and grocery items. The best shopping is for the spices. If you like to cook, and we love to cook, they are the best, and least expensive spices you will ever purchase. Instead of overpaying in the grocery store for weak old spices, go here and buy 2 0z packages much more cheaply that are much much fresher and overall better. We buy nutmeg, cinnamon, thyme, ginger, Aleppo pepper, white pepper, and other spices here every time we are in town. I also bought my long flat kebab skewers here for a reasonable price. The price of a wrap here is going to be very hard to find elsewhere. This is definitely a bargain price. The food is really good, price excellent, however the ambiance could use some sprucing up. From the outside the place looks a tad run down but don't let that stop you! The food is really great & the prices can't be beat. I'll definitely come back from time to time. Literally the nicest staff EVER! I also can't believe how low cost our meal was. We each got a shawarma wrap and an appetizer and two lemon aids. We prob only paid around $20 for everything. Alrighty guys this is my go to spot when I'm in the area hands down. If you haven't tried them by now you must. I live in the west valley so taking a hike here is about 40mins in traffic; but worth it. I've been coming here for years. My whole family loves it including the children. Their favorite of course. The gyro. I love their kabab mixed plate with tabooli and hummus. I've also tried their chicken shawarma and gyro sandwich, falafel. You can't go wrong with the selection. Outstanding meal at Haji-Baba last week! Can't stop thinking about the hummus with a pickle and olive, pool of quality olive oil, and sumac on top. So smooth and one of the best hummuses I've ever had. The tabbouleh was insanely fresh and the perfect complement to our sandwiches (gyro (lamb and beef) and shish kebab (grilled lamb). The gyro filling was especially generous. We didn't have room for baklava but we did split a piece of spanakopita! We spent $37 total for two people after tip (great service, very kind waiter) for all that food and enjoyed leftovers the next day. I will definitely return to try more menu items and pick up some bulk spices and other goodies from the grocery store side. read more

Went there for lunch on Sunday. There is a store and a restaurant in one. The grocery store is very authentic Middle Easter store. Has little bit of everything. Restaurant has nice sitting area and walls are decorated in middle eastern motif. The server was was a young man very friendly and knew the menu very well. Haji Baba is Hilary-Duff-style What Dreams Are Made Of. Everyone I know who has been can't say enough great things about it, and it's been my go-to for years. Though I've never actually eaten in, I usually call in my order and pick it up on my way home from work. The location is in a strip mall off of Apache--though it may not look like much, I've had great food in that strip mall. I'm usually not there during super busy times, but the parking does seem to be pretty limited. My go-to order is the chicken shawarma plate. Don't even bother with anything else (to be honest, I'm sure it is all absolutely delicious). I'm not sure about in-restaurant portions, but as far as the to-go order is concerned, it's enough food to last me at least 2 meals. Piled high with basmati rice, hummus, tabouli, pita bread, garlic sauce, and an extremely generous helping of chicken shawarma, it's a nearly unbelievable amount of food for ~$10. An unbelievable amount of GREAT food! Everything is seasoned perfectly so that nothing overwhelms anything else. I feel fine about hummus usually, but they have such tasty hummus that my first move is to gobble all of it down with pita. Best bet though? Make the "perfect bite" every time. You know what I mean. A lil bit of each thing on your fork, so you're getting the full delicious flavor experience. Seriously, do not sleep on Haji. It's the best around. read more

TL:DR - Favorite Lunch spot in Tempe. Very unassuming, but get here before 12 as it fills up quick for the lunch rush. Chicken shawarma was amazing. Platter was way more food than anticipated. We got here around 11:30 for lunch and most tables were open, being pretty hungry, I got the chicken shawarma platter (I was torn between the chicken and beef, but the server highly suggested the chicken). The food came out promptly, like 6 min after ordering. The platter came with chicken, an amazing garlic sour cream type of sauce, hummus, salad, rice, and pita. Pretty much everything was top notch. Chicken was flavorful and had bits that were perfectly crispy, salad was light with an amazing vinaigrette dressing, and the pita was super soft and warm. The hummus left a little to be desired, the texture was like half mashed potatoes and half applesauce, could have been better, but tasted fine. All in all, this is one of my favorite lunch spots in Tempe. The price is great, clocking in at around $12 for a huge platter. The pita sandwich is a little smaller, I'd probably eat one and a half of them for lunch, but those are about $8. Around 12, the place started to really fill up and people were either waiting or sitting outside. I'd recommend getting their early.
