I visited Hakka No 1 and was delighted by their affordable and delicious dishes. The restaurant looked rather dated, with its name in large, bold characters. What stood out to me was that they had LLBO dine-in and offered takeout. Their phone number was prominent as well. Inside looked just as dated, with plenty of seats but overall dim lighting. The red seats did not even stand out. We decided to dine in. The menu indicated that a 13% tip would be added automatically for dine-ins. It certainly had a lot to offer, with menu item numbers going above 230. Here's what I tried: #01 Chicken Pakora: A great choice on our part, 10 large pieces of breaded chicken were served with a lemon wedge and chilli mayo. They were red, which I found striking. I enjoyed the taste of mildly spicy chicken. The sauce was okay, but I mostly enjoyed the chicken without it. #22 Hot and Sour Soup with Seafood: I wasn't a big fan of this famous Chinese appetizer. It had all the right ingredients, but it was a bit too sour for my taste. #75 Manchurian Beef with Gravy: I loved this dish. The spicy beef strips were tender and juicy. The sauce was hot and savoury, and it went well with steamed rice that we ordered. #169 Chicken Ho-Fun: Another great choice, this rice-noodle stir fry dish was mild and had many tender chicken strips to fill me up. There was only one person serving, but there was no one else dining, so her checking in on us every now and then was more than good enough for us in terms of service. The table and some eating utensils were sticky, showing age. Disposable chopsticks were available upon request, which was nice. The washroom was serviceable but not clean. Despite some of the flaws I found in the restaurant, their dishes tasted good. I was surprised to see how affordable the food was. Given this, I would recommend getting takeout from this restaurant for its great value. I might actually return to try some of their other dishes to go. read more

Great Chinese-Indian food! It's like most hakka places; they focus on take out, but it's okay to eat in too. The food comes out hot and fresh, and it's always fantastic. This is not the first time I have ordered from this restaurant, but it is the first time I have held off eating the food for long enough to take some photos for a review. I had been mentioning this place for months to my boyfriend, telling him how much I wanted to try their Hakka food. Having never had Hakka food before, he initially had no interest. I had an opportunity to order their food for the first time when he went night fishing (his loss), and I was not disappointed! (Neither was he when he dug into my leftovers...) Their Manchurian Hakka Noodles are amazing. You get to choose from Chicken, Beef, Shrimp or Vegetable. I always order ours with beef, and they are generous with the large pieces of beef. I always opt for Spicy spice level and it is a good compromise to satisfy both of us (I can tolerate way spicier foods than he can). They always give a very decent portion. The Chili Chicken is a must. So flavorful and delicious! You have the option of ordering it dry or with gravy. We order it with gravy, which the extra sauce really adds to the already flavorful dish. Their Bombay Chicken is also out of this world. We have ordered both spicy and extra spicy. Extra spicy costs an extra $0.25, but it is well worth it if your taste buds fancy a lot more extra spice. You get white rice with either chicken dish. For their appetizers, I recommend their coconut shrimp. Every time we ordered (except the last time), the shrimps were gigantic. I would also recommend their shrimp spring rolls. At $2.50 each, they are not cheap. But they are worth it. They don't use any other spring roll filling, only shrimp. Every bite was such a satisfying combination of shrimp and fried spring roll wrapper. We also tried the curry chicken spring rolls, which I thought were okay but not great. My boyfriend did not like them. He thought the curry flavor was too overpowering, but then again he doesn't like the taste of curry powder. Their pakoras are a must try as well, with an epic combination of flavors and a very nice kick to them. We tried the shrimp pakoras, however we could not actually tell if it was shrimp or not. We couldn't actually tell what it was made of at all. (The shrimp and other ingredients must have been over-blended.) But they were still super delicious. WOW! A few things: Food sucks! They automatically add 13% to your bill without telling you and when you go to use your card it takes you first to the "do you want to leave a tip?" Page. If you didn't scrutinize your bill or not receive one, you would not know this. If you left even a 15% tip, that would mean you've tipped 28% ! I called to ask about this at the store and was hung up on. They said there was no way to get in touch with the owner by email or phone, and that I'd have to come to the restaurant at 11:30 pm as he only came to take the money. Chilli chicken was tasty but the Manchurian chicken literally had sauce tossed on fried chicken. Didn't like the taste either. Chicken pakoras were fantastic. Chicken fried rice was also very good. I was craving somethings spicy, salty, and a bit saucy! And I know just the place. One of the places I used to frequent is open for take out these days via some of the delivery apps. Today we looked up the options and a few clicks at the finger tip equaled to some delicious Hakka food at my door step. If you want to take a break from cooking, give Hakka No 1 a try. Hakka No 1 is located in a random strip mall on the back parking lot of Walmart. It's a bit hidden, but once you find it, it's hard to get away from it. On the East side of the city there are many Hakka places to choose from, so I had a few shops that I frequented. Now that we are on the West side (imagine I'm making a "WEST SIDE" hand sign) now, there are not too much to choose from. Hakka is a mix/fusion cuisine. The fusion is between Indian and Chinese. My absolute favourite spot to come to I've been a regular for years now every one I bring here becomes a regular until a week ago I booked reservations just in case and usually they don't even need reservations but 20 minutes before my reserve time came they called to tell me that it was cutting it close to the time so rude asking where I was how long I'll be I live maybe 5 minutes from the place if that just for the service and the change of quality in food plus the roaches I've over looked I'll probably just go to the new place in the plaza better price and better food and way clearer. read more

The food looked good and tasted okay. But after eating, it made me thirsty and my stomach bit upset. Not sure if its something in the ingredient such as too much MSG or something else. Service was bad. Slow, no waiters came to ask how the food is or offer water refills. The restaurant was not that busy so that is disappointing. Don't eat here! I got lunch here and was back in work enjoying the food when all of a sudden something didn't taste right. I took what I thought was chicken out of my mouth and to my horror it was a used BAND AID! I went back to the restaurant and when I asked to speak to a manager I was told none was present. They then said none of the kitchen staff has any cuts today and questioned if I put it in the food! They refunded the cost of the meal but I will never eat here again. read more

Serving only plastic bottled water in this day and age is unacceptable and completely tone deaf. Please pause for a minute and recognize the damage caused by our single-use plastic culture and stop serving bottled water to each and every patron for the sake of the environment. Other than that gripe, the food is average and portions are huge. As with most Hakka restaurants, the bulk of the portion is the carbs (noodles, rice) as expected. Servers hate their life but I don't blame anyone for not being a cheerleader when making minimum wage. Hopefully they're making at least the minimum wage. read more

We decided to try this Hakka restaurant on the west side but was disappointed. The chef is not authentic Hakka and it shows in the food. I've eaten here for 4 years now. The bad reviews are based on personal experience with staff. I go here to eat and if you want great service all the time go to a fine dining establishment and pay for it!!! But he food here is great! ... i always have the Chili Chicken Dry, it's crispier than the wet version. The soups are great as is most all the dishes. I have never had a bad experience with the quality of the dishes. I've moved away from the area and can't find any Hakka restaurant that beats it. So i return here for my Hakka experience. believe me I've eaten here more than 50 times and i always have a great food experience. For me it's worth the drive. read more

I'm a bit new to hakka but there are a lot of similarities to Chinese cuisine. I see all these bad reviews but I didn't experience any of that during my visit. The service was actually quite good. We had two different servers who tended to us. Our waters were refilled and they did the usual check up without being too invasive. There is an extensive menu and we only ordered two out of the plethora of choices. The chicken pakora had a nice kick to it and it was a generous large portion of meat. I had one piece which was a bit fatty but it wasn't too big of a deal. The beef rice noodles were delicious. Just the right flavour and on par to what I get in other Chinese restaurants, maybe even a little better! I have yet to try other dishes on the menu and I'm not sure if I would just because I liked these two dishes so much. Will update this review if I ever do! read more

I don't understand all the negative reviews here. My parents and I went here for lunch recently and we thought everything was just fine. Yes, the portions are a little smaller than at some other places, like Super Hakka, and the Chili Chicken was not spicy at all, but it still had flavour. The male server who cleared our table and brought our bill did not smile, but I wouldn't say he was rude, just neutral (neither nice nor not nice). They did not automatically add the tip to our bill like some other reviewers mentioned - although we were just a party of three, maybe they do this if your party is larger(?) We ordered from the Lunch Special Menu. I had the Bombay Chicken (dry) - $6.95, my dad had the Mango Tango Beef - $6.95 and my mom had the Chili Chicken (dry) - $5.95. All lunch specials come with a vegetarian spring roll and a bottle of water. The spring roll was average sized. It was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It was filled with cabbage, onions and carrots. It was pretty standard. I loved my Bombay Chicken. It was spicy hot and had a great combination of spices in it. I loved the dry chrunchy bits. The Mango Tango Beef was tender and came with green and red peppers as well as slices of sweet ripe mango. The sauce was sweet and was a nice contrast to the spicy Bombay Chicken. The Chili Chicken had flavour but it wasn't spicy at all. I don't understand why on menu the Chili Chicken is rated as spicy as the Bombay Chicken (2 chilies). Anyway, the Chili Chicken was my least favorite, but it was still OK and my mom who doesn't like really spicy food actually really liked it. The white steamed rice was nicely cooked but not all that plentiful. Portions are a bit smaller than other places. Hakka no. 1 is the no. 1 alternate to driving all the way to Brampton or Mississauga or Scarborrough in search of good Hakka food. I was fooled by the cover of the book, and was assuming the worst when I finally decided to give this place a try. But to my amazing surprise, the restaurant was the exact opposite of what I feared. It was clean, well organized seating, good staff and delicious well cooked Hakka food. The prices are the cherry on top. Delicious and more than filling lunch options for under $10......how can anyone complain after that?? The lunch menu offers so many options, that you don't even need to bother with the main menu during lunch hours Finally coming to the food: Hakka noodles were great, flavourful, and a generous portion. Ordered Bombay chicken with fried rice. (You can change steam rice from the original combo to fried rice for a dollar and half). Bombay chicken was crispy fried, very well marinated and flavourful, tossed in green herbs. An amazing preparation. If anyone knows and misses "chicken kebabs of Bangalore", this dish comes really really close to it. If i could give a negative rating i would... this was by far the most disgusting hakka food we've had and the saddest part was that it wasn't cheap. We ordered lemon chicken, prawn pakora, hot and sour soup and egg fried rice... our total on ubereats minus tip was almost $65... we wouldn't mind paying this if the food was edible. The pakora was clearly old and stale, it was so hard and chewy just unacceptable! The lemon chicken I don't even know what that was the sauce looked like yellow coloured water with one squeeze of lemon juice. it was just appallingly bad. The hot and sour soup was just diluted god knows what. I never write such negative reviews but at a time like now where covid is sinking finances everywhere it's really disheartening, we ordered out after 3 months as a means of treating ourselves.. I called ahead to try and place a sit in order before I got there cause we were both meeting there and I only had an hour. The server wasn't rude in his response but told me they don't do that. I showed up 9 minutes later and when he brought my menus I just gave him my order, so rudeness just quick and efficient. Exactly 5 mins later my food came out steamy hot lol except my friend was running late so I had to wait a good 5 minutes anyways... I definitely snuck a few pieces in my mouth. This place was a disappointment. The dishes that claimed "HEAT" - lacked. The General Tao Chicken similar to a person who had been submerged in water for a LONG period of time.. I am not sure if it was supposed to be deep fried - and someone failed miserably -- or exactly WHAT was going on. The Ginger chicken didn't taste like Ginger at all.. The beef and broccoli had more broccoli than beef - and the broccoli was HARD. The Wonton soup was tasty - which was the only thing that was okay. All of the dishes must have TONS of MSG. We only ate a little of the food (all else went in the GARBAGE unfortunately) -- but we were STUFFED - in a very unsettling way. This place was a waste of time and money. Never again.. read more

Should've checked the review on Yelp before I went here. Then again a friend took me & he doesn't check reviews. I judge a hakka/Indian Chinese restaurant on their chili chicken. I'd rate it a 2 out of 10 here. The ONLY good thing are the portion sizes. I honestly don't know how restaurants who serve horrible food can be in business!! I will never go here again. I've only been to this Hakka no.1 location but it is my go-to hakka place! They have the BEST Bombay chicken hands down the rest of the menu items are on point and always consistent. They give options to make dishes 'extra spicy' for 25 cents more(which I always opt for) and their supper spicy hot sauce and pickled chili peppers give me spice-gasms every time. read more

I have to admit that within its massive menu there are a few gems. The Bombay chicken, pakora, rice or noodle dishes are quite savory and have never disappointed the few times I have been here. Portions are very big and a single dish can be shared by at least 3 people. However, this is where the positive review ends. Whenever, I have tried to wander off and be adventurous it has proved to be a bad idea. Most of the gravy dishes are waay too salty and the meat lacking in flavor. Now, about the service: horrendous. Be prepared to order as soon as you sit down, because the food takes forever to arrive. I like to think it is because the food is being freshly prepared, but at this joint lets not kid ourselves. The waiters are usually hanging out behind the counter and will not notice glasses that are empty or you trying to get their attention. My friend had to practically wave her card and do a handstand to get the waiters to come over. Every time I have been here it has been a hit or miss with some of the times being quite enjoyable. For that reason I will give it an average of 3 stars. If you still want to give this place a try I suggest doing takeout. read more

We had a team lunch from work yesterday at Hakka No. 1 location. They have multiple locations. I only tried the location number 1. We ordered multiple dishes to share among us. What I like the most is their Singapore Noodle, it taste just right, it is not too much curry but you can taste the curry, I like how they stir fry the noodle, it is not overcooked compare to other places I go to. I also like their Chicken Fried Rice and Crispy chicken lunch special. They give you a decent portion for the chicken and rice. It is more than enough for me. It get really busy around lunch time. the price is decent. The service here is really sucks! The lady customer service is horrible. You asked her a question she answered you very rudely. The food is good and the staff is very friendly. I went to go pick up a very large take out order and they were running a couple minutes behind. The staff asked me to take a seat and were very kind when they asked me to wait a few minutes and they even apologized for the wait and brought me out a glass of water. If you're vegetarian I highly recommend the cauliflower Manchurian which is a good twist on the classic and overly done manchurian. The only dish I didn't like that we ordered were the steamed dumplings which are pretty much broken when I opened the container. read more
