    Manchurian Chicken
    Chris C.

One of my cousins had recommended China Cottage years ago, when they first opened this location. She lives near their other location and enjoys their food. I finally had the opportunity to come here! The place is nicely decorated, with a sophisticated look that includes high ceilings, a stone wall, and intimate lighting. It was attractive except for all the footprints showing up on the dark floor, dust under the tables, and upholstery in need of cleaning. It probably looks better in the evening. China Cottage bills themselves as offering Indian style Hakka Chinese, as well as Thai cuisine. I ordered the Manchurian Chicken from their lunch specials menu which includes a choice of soup or drink. I ended up having both. It's a good deal for $10.99 (including soup or drink). The Chicken Corn Soup arrived quickly. It wasn't bad, although I would have preferred a bit more flavour. The Manchurian Chicken, from their Indo Hakka menu, followed shortly after. It was a generous portion of boneless chicken, served with rice and gravy. It was pretty good, nicely seasoned, with just the right amount of gravy. Service was very good - speedy, friendly, and attentive. That, with decent food and good prices, will bring me back.

Date visited : Saturday April 02, 2022 Overall Rating for experience : 4/5 Comments : We've been coming to China Cottage even before pandemic, just getting around to the review now tho lol. We came for lunch special after we finished our grocery haul for the coming week. They are now accepting Dine-In business again woohoo!! Service : 4/5 On this visit we did have an attentive server. Checking on us at regular intervals, checking water levels etc. Food : 3/5 Normally I would rate the dishes we have at China Cottage more at 4/5 but this visit, was leaning more towards a 3/5. For this specific visit, we ordered off the Lunch specials menu : Ginger Beef, Chicken Teppanyaki & Chimken Hakka Noodles. The Ginger Beef was so red in color, no idea what they added to make it dark red. Also, there was barely any Ginger flavor also it wasn't spicy as the server had stated. As for the Chicken Teppanyaki, it was just okay, I had forgotten that I had ordered the dish before in 2019. The Chicken Hakka Noodles were also more from meh-okay. My wife likes Hakka noodles. So we had enough leftovers of the noodles for her to bring to work. Likely we won't be ordering their Ginger Beef and Teppanyaki Chicken again. There are other Chicken lunch offerings I have tried in the past and have enjoyed more. I'm kinda stuck with Chimken offerings due to beef and pork are an avoid due to managing gout. Drinks : The lunch specials come with the option for a soft drink. Tho I did make a recommendation that at least for those customers that are diabetic there should be a different option than a soft drink. Appears that they do have an option for Chinese Tea. Portion Size Value for Money Spent : 4/5 For a Lunch special at $9.99 CAD you get a good amount of rice + the entree ordered. Worth a repeat visit : Of course! As mentioned we've been somewhat regular diners here pre-pandemic.

    Chicken 88! Recommended for sure

Inviting dining area, comfortable booths. Our server was welcoming, very patient with us, we were slightly indecisive with our final order. The vegetable pakoras and chicken I'd recommend to start off, crispy and comes with yummy sauce to dip them in. Chicken 88 was intriguing, the name is a bit weird and have heard good things from other reviewers. If you're looking for crispy chicken with no sauce, this is the dish to get. The chili chicken I would say was a let down, bland and didn't have much flavour. I think I also didn't enjoy it because we ordered it with sauce, I'd recommend getting chili chicken dry with no gravy, but this is something that is a personal preference that can defer with others. Again, need to mention our server who came to check on us. Other hakka places I've noticed servers don't really comeback to check on you after you've received your food until it's time to pay, which is a big of a yikes. Think she came over twice to even fill our water! Overall positive experience. Chili chicken, again can't stress this get it dry!

Food was previously amazing but quality of food has gone down hill. Noodles are dry and lack sauce. The meat in the dish was also only a small amount. The price is decent and portions are large but there's so many similar hakka places down the street that I wouldn't recommend this one.

This is the 2nd location of China Cottage. It is in the plaza of Walmart Super Centre. The interior is really nice, chic and modern! 4 Stars for decoation. The services here is so attentive and friendly! 4 Stars for that! The food, a little disappointed. The Pepper Chicken ($9.25) as appetitzer which the waiter highly recommended is a huge disappointment! It is over cooked and dry. It is so dry that it hurt the inside of the mouth! The waiter cannot get over that we did not enjoy this.... The Shrimp Hakka Noodle Munbai Style ($8.25) is sizable. But the taste is kind of bland. For sure not spicy. It is ok, but I am not sure I will order it again. Food 2 stars! They do have lunch specials for $6.75 with a lot of choices that includes a pop or spring roll or daily soup. Accepts Visa and Mastercard. I might give China Cottage another chance in the future. But not in a rush to go and eat there again!

I don't typically write negative reviews, but this place gave us the scraped up pieces of Mumbai paneer for takeout. There were maybe 6/7 pieces of paneer for the price of $10.00. The rice was not flavourful, it was dry and tasted like cardboard. If you want Hakka I'd totally skip this place.

I love the chicken 88 But today I got the spring roll with it and it was so bad, literally a puddle of oil dripping out.. I don't recommend getting the spring roll to go at all. They place it on top of the rice too so it's super soggy The chicken 88 itself is good but the rice tasted old for sure

I had the lunch special the soup was terrible and the chilli chicken was super bland for the price it definitely wasn't worth it. A little salt goes a long way. They just put soy sauce with no other spice I still think federick is the best Hakka place in Markham the service was good that is a positive but the food was terrible

Our kid dropped his spoon and we weren't going to ask for another one but our server came back with a new one. We ordered some of the regular dishes that we like (so that we could make comparisons) such as: chicken satay, pad, Thai, panang curry, morning glory and khao soi. We also ordered thre crispy pork with veggies. Overall we really enjoyed the food. The taste and quality was right up there with our other faves. Their crispy pork was nicely done and didn't feel greasy. The only thing that we would change is the saltiness. Not sure if it was just tonight or a regular part of the recipes, but we thought the pork, and the morning glory were super salty today. Overall nice restaurant that we will visit again.

Beautiful loungy decor, tinted windows, mood lighting..but somethtng threw me off immediately. The floors were slippery throughout the restaurant.. as if the floors were coated in grease. At first glance, the tables looked clean. But when you sat down and got a closer look, you can see the remnants of the ring of a plates and cups. The tables have not been wiped clean. At least I can say that about the 10 person table I sat on. I would expect that from a food court or a fast food restaurant but shouldnt be seen here. The server was friendly. Took our orders and asked about allergies, was attentive and brought out the food timely. Didnt have to wait to be seated for lunch. Moving on to the food. We tried the following: Green curry with fish was rich with a coconut milk base and a mild spice. Came with thai eggplant halves, green peppers slices and crunchy baby corn. Went great with the soft white fish. Very flavorful. Couldve came with a bit more rice. Pad thai with chicken was standard against other thai restaurants in the area. Good portion and large sized chicken and tofu pieces. Not heavy on the beansprouts which was a plus for me. Pad see mao was very flavourful. Always prefer this style thick noodle to the simpler pad see ew as it has more flavor and spice vs just soy sauce. Neat to see the whole peppercorn still on the stem. Papaya salad was great! Thin slices of perfectly ripe papaya with mini shrimps and topped with peanuts. The fish sauce dressing had great balance. Pineapple fried rice was presented beautifully in a carved out pineapple! Only down side to that is it became a space filler! Regardless, it was delicious. Great amount of spice. A generous amount of crispy pork belly. Big chunks of the sweetest most refreshing pineapple mixed into the piping hot rice. Grilled pork jowl was ok. Thinly sliced and had chewy texture. Came out with a balanced chili sauce to break through the fatty meat. Thai iced teas were too sweet. Was disapointed that they did not have the typical strong tea flavor. Even the color alone was telling. It was mainly milk and sugar. Was more sweet and icy than anything else. Overall the food was great yet I couldnt get over the greasy floors and that tables arent wiped down thouroughly between customers. Really hoping that was a one off. Because for a sit down restaurant serving great food with those price ranges, its disappointing.

Noodles came out piping hot, perfectly chewy and with a generous amount of huge pieces of chicken. The pad see mao was so fragrant with the basil leaf. Both had thick crunchy vegetables to contrast the chewy noodle. The beef was nice and tender. Who doesnt love a good crispy chicken skin?! For $6, we got a huge portion of chicken skin, we almost couldnt believe it. Thought they brought out the next size up by mistake. It came with a pickled cucumber vinegary sauce that was delicious when used to soak the white rice that came with the pad gra prow (which was super spicy thanks to the heavy use of Thai chill). The chicken nuggets were okay, wish they were less dense. The pineapple fried rice had notes of curry, lots of cashew and the juiciest chunks of pineapple. Great service despite the server spilling fish sauce on my arms and pants. But overall would visit again.

The server asked me to post a google review to exchange for a free Thai milk tea, I showed him I had posted many yelp reviews but that doesn't count, honestly the Thai milk tea doesn't cost much and I don't ask for free stuff, they could be more flexible in offering goodwill especially as a supportive customer, I showed them the many reviews I've posted. They now default to minimum 18% service charge on machine. I just feel tipping is going crazy these days, together with 13% tax, it means for a regular meal I'll need to pay additional 31% just for tax and tips. Tipping should correspond with service level, there's no reason to default to a high minimum 18%, I know I have right to adjust tipping amount, but sometimes it makes people feel small if they don't pay that much as requested. People might say if you're poor or stingy then don't eat out, but that's not the point, why are people forced to tip so much just for a regular job, I think that's greed! I still think they offer delicious authentic Thai meal but I'm not satisfied with above arrangements but having said that, I am unable to do anything which is disappointing!
