A go-to for our group when we want to get a late night meal or snack. We usually grab a portion to head next door to the Hookah Bar. The Rice Bowl is the staple. Popping hot every time. Every bite is equally flavorful, never a patch of hard rice as some places may have. The falafel are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, again hot. The Mint Lemonade is would be another recommendation. It's more sweet than sour, which is what I preferred. They are open late night, always busy, but the service is never long. I head over to the Hookah Bar because it's a great combination. More relax environment since the restaurant itself is so loud. Do not park in In and Out parking lot. Quantities are for hungry college kids/ drunk people, which means you're getting your money's worth. Loaded fries = same deal as the falafel. I'm eating my leftovers as I write this review. Haha. Yum! I have heard so much about the food truck downtown and was excited to hear that there was a brick-and-mortar place opening near campus. When my roommate and I found out that their soft opening was happening, we got really excited and made a spontaneous trip there for an early dinner. Basically no one was there around 5:45pm on a Thursday. Service was extremely fast and friendly. The shop is very small, so don't expect to bring a large group of friends there. There is a thin bar on the side with several chairs as well as some small tables (2-4 seats each). The parking lot in front is very small, so if you're coming from campus during a busy hour, I would suggest either walking (if you live more north-ish campus) or taking the bus. There are maybe about 3-4 spots, if I remember correctly. Chicken/lamb/combo over rice was a little over $7 including tax. Now, I've had the famous 53rd and 6th chicken over rice in NYC, so I'm not sure if my standards were too high...but I wasn't too impressed with Halal Guys today. I got the lamb over rice plate. It reminded me of Chipotle, except...Middle Eastern. I guess. A big plate of rice with some meat, lettuce, tomatoes, and sauce on top. The lamb tasted more similar to Italian sausage than what I expected lamb to taste like, and the basmati rice was harder than I would have preferred. Maybe I wasn't hungry enough, maybe the chicken over rice is better, maybe the shop will get better after the grand opening on Monday? Bottom line: I'm probably at a 3.5, but I'll bump it up to 4 since it is a new establishment. You get a big portion of food, and the food is very flavorful. With UT's poor choices around campus, Halal bros is a place I go for filling, tasty and fast food. See, it's fast but would not say it is fast food. The portions are huge and for like 7 dollars I easily have lunch and dinner for two days. I highly recommend the combination over rice but would suggest that they go easy on the white sauce and grab red sauce on the side. The service is great. I would strongly recommend the lamb over rice: seasoned basmati rice, lamb, lettuce, tomatoes and an amazing white sauce. The meat is cooked perfectly seasoned and griddled to have those nice crispy bits yet not dry: yum. Make sure you mix the spicy sauce in thoroughly as it can be quite ferocious but once you give it a moment to work its way in, you'll be in food nirvana shortly thereafter. It's nicely packed in a compact container to go on the fly too. Only complaint: small shop, so the place gets packed and the lines get long, but once you try the food, you'll fully understand why. read more

Amazing food! You honestly can't go wrong with the beef schwarma over rice, it has been consistently delicious the three times I've had it. Contrary to most of the recommendations on here, the chicken is a little more dry than the beef. I've had chicken over rice and the chicken wrap, and they're both not that memorable. I also recommend the lamb gyro if you're short on cash, it's really tender and filling for the price. Since they cook the meat fresh it takes about 10-15 minutes to get your food, but it's definitely worth the wait if you want to experience a taste that's different from every campus/around campus joint. The cashier is really sweet and welcoming. She greets everyone with a smile, which is a rarity for the joints around campus. The only thing that's keeping this review from being a five star is the small proportion of vegetables to balance out the massive amounts of meat you're getting. Especially in the 'over rice' dishes, more lettuce and tomatoes will keep every bite tasting fresh and juicy. Because after a while, the meat just tastes boring without the veggies to compliment it. The first and, up until now, only times I have had halal was in New York at the Halal Guys across the street from the MOMA. I fell in love with this delicious mix of rice and gyro with the creamy white sauce and spicy red sauce. In NYC, $6 will get you a really large container of lamb halal over rice, served with salad and a warm pita. It's one of the best meal deals in the city. I was sad that I couldn't find it available in Austin. Enter the Halal Bros. delicious halal. The prices are only slightly higher, but it is served from a brick and mortar establishment instead of a food truck. The taste takes me back to my days in NYC. The portions were generous. More than I could finish. The people were friendly, even though the place was packed and the crowd of mostly UT students (I assume, based on the number of Longhorn shirts) was a little impatient waiting for their orders. The downside is the lack of parking. Even with the empty lot next door, I had to circle a few times to find a spot. The portions, though large, could use a little more meat. The portion may be a tad smaller but not by too much. They give a solid portion of salad (romaine, tomato and cucumber), rice and meat. I opted for the combo of chicken and gyro. My my..the meats aren't dry and are seasoned perfectly. Rice is just okay though in flavor. It is a bit greasy...check the bottom of the tin foil container when you're done or even halfway. For just $7.50 +tax, it's a good price. They have shawarma and falafel as well on menu but I haven't tried those items. Their fountain sodas I believe are locally made which is cool. The container in the pictures looked small and I thought it was small serving. But no, to my surprise, I was stuffed at lunch and still had leftovers. I ordered it for dinner another time and still had leftovers too. (And if you know me, I have an appetite.) I've been here twice and would definitely come back.
