I've been back twice now in the past couple of months and it's still just as good as I remember from before. I normally order the pho, but this time I ordered their Imperial rolls. I like how it's made with the rice paper, which makes it different from other places. It was very filling and I took half home. We were seated right away and service was quick. We got our food within about 5-10 min of ordering. My only minor complaint would be how close the tables are to each other. I could hear the other people's conversations very clearly, and I'm sure they could hear ours too - lol - so just be aware of that. The pho here is consistently amazing. I've eaten here multiple times and it has always been great, and we've never had issues with service before. That's why this visit was so disappointing. I also want to be clear- I'm born and raised here and come from an Asian family, so I understand different service styles. This wasn't that. This was just rude. Our server avoided eye contact, seemed judgmental when taking our order, never checked on us, and had a bad attitude when we asked for the check. When I asked for a container and we left part of the garden roll (the pork was very dry), she responded, "You don't want this???" in a rude tone. She also threw away my pho toppings before I could ask to take them to go. Fresh food, quality pho and clean atmosphere! Only downside was the lengthy wait time. Customer service is good, as the staff are very upbeat and friendly. Only issue is they were not as attentive at times, and the wait time for food was surprisingly long. My boyfriend and I ordered the imperial rolls, which took close to 30 min to arrive at our table. Our bowls of pho took maybe 20 min afterwards. We are patient customers, but felt surprised by the lack of checking-in at our table and the lengthy waits. Customers who were seated after us got their food in 10-15 min time. Slightly disappointing but I never regret supporting local. The imperial rolls were nice and fresh. The produce was plentiful and the ingredients appeared high quality. I personally wish the spring roll wrappers were different, but understand the appeal of the fried rice paper. Tonight my nephew wanted to take me out for dinner . He suggested Hale Vietnam located next door to Duk Kee in Kaimuki 12th Ave . He was raving about their stuffed chicken wings for weeks so finally I said ok let's go . To my surprise it was really good very crispy and lots of stuffing with chicken and vermicelli noodles . I also had their Pho with rare meat and for $18.50 for a small portion it was very filling. Of course on the side they give you Beans sprouts, Jalapeño, Thai basil, cilantro and mint also lemon . 40 years... This restaurant has been in this location since the 80s! Our waitress has worked here for 22 years and was here again on another tremendously busy evening. It's always busy here... You write your name on the paper board near the door and get seated by one of the waitresses when a table opens up. The food is always very good here. I think they make the best spring rolls of anywhere on the island! A mark of a good bowl of pho is clear soup... pass on the murky type of soup you find in some Vietnamese restaurants. Came here on a Friday night without reservations, and we were immediately seated. I've heard good things about this restaurant and was excited to give it a try. I got the small brisket pho, and even the small size was a hefty portion. The brisket was soft, noodles were a good texture, and the broth was flavorful and not overly salty. It's your typical Asian restaurant where service isn't the friendliest, but it's quick! Overall good spot for a dinner with friends. Awesome. Really large place, much larger than it looks from the outside. Party of four for dinner on a weekday evening. Was somewhat busy. Their selection is quite large. I got the BBQ Pork noodles (vermicelli). It was fantastic. The rest of my family was equally pleased. The waitstaff was pretty busy but they did manage to take our orders, get our food to us, and generally serve us all very well. It was a bit noisy but that may have been due to just one large table of people. Big parking lot in the back but it does cost money. If we're in the area again we may just return here!!! read more

I found my new noodle-less soup Vegetarian Sour Soup! Delicious, citrusy, and yummy with tofu and lots of veggie. I wanted to cut the carbs, so I didn't order my usual chicken pho. The service is fast, friendly, and easy to get a table during the weekday for lunch. They don't take reservations for 3 people, so we went at noon on a Friday without a problem getting a table. This is the pho place I visit when I'm in the Kaimuki area. They have a good sized menu. They did raise their prices. We ordered summer rolls & a large combination pho that we shared as I wasn't that hungry, I just wanted the broth. Seating area is spacious. The food was just okay, but the service was very disappointing. The lady working in the dining hall was rude and unhelpful during our visit. What made it even more frustrating was that she seemed friendly and attentive to other customers, but not to our group. A few examples: * Before ordering, we were trying to remember the name of a menu item and asked her for help. She simply walked away without saying a word, as if she was ignoring us. * When we tried to place our order, she acted like she couldn't hear us. * When we asked for the check, we were ignored again. * The restaurant wasn't busy at all, so it wasn't an issue of being overwhelmed. The most frustrating part is that an automatic gratuity of at least 18% is added to the bill, yet the service we received was far below what anyone would reasonably expect. We've been coming here for nearly 20 years, which makes this experience even more disappointing. Unfortunately, after the way we were treated, we don't plan on coming back. read more

This is one of my pho go-to's, when I'm in the area and don't feel like going into Chinatown. The pho broth has always been a hit, and never needed to be doctored with the usual Hoisin and Sriracha... not for me anyway. The noodles were bouncy and there just enough steak slices to balance the meal, and I was able to finish my large bowl, full and satisfied. I decided to splurge and ordered these boneless chicken wings, that was stuffed with ground pork too and that was fried goodness. The tart fish sauce brought a brightness to each crunchy and savory bite. I only come here after I get paid, though... the prices are a bit steep considering what other places charge. Work lunch Wednesday was enjoyed at Hale Vietnam. A hole in the wall that is quite unappealing from the outside but spacious and bustling on the inside. Our party of 6 was seated immediately right before 12. I had been eyeing the menu since my recent calorie deficit diet required well...not my usual cold vermicelli noodle dish with imperial rolls and lemongrass chicken. I found a Vietnamese sour soup section that sounded delicious and low calorie but there was only one picture of the chicken sour soup from 13 years ago. I couldn't tell what was in it and the menu mentioned pretty normal stuff so I decided to go with the vegetarian sour soup. When I got my dish it was the chicken version which wasn't a bad thing I just didn't eat any of the chicken. During the meal I kept trying to figure out what this strange green vegetable was that I have never had. It was soft but not green squash soft, but also spongy. I finished as much as I could but ended up taking a full container home. The flavor was a perfect sour, it was definitely piping hot, and there was a soft licorice taste (possibly some herb). Very delicious! I asked the waitress what that vegetable was and she said "bac ha" or taro stem. It's also know as elephant ear stem. The dish was special and honestly nothing I have ever had. Tried here for the first time for lunch and it was okay. Food and drinks were good but very overpriced for the size of the plates and they charge you extra for rice. The fried egg rolls were really tasty and everything else was standard. Service was meh by one person who was impatient and another one who was friendly. With a large group they charge you 18-20% as I recall seeing on the menu. No biggie and this is standard, but they hand wrote down the tip for me. Just put down the exact amount on the menu that you're going to automatically charge to avoid confusion. FYI they also charge you 3% for using a credit card. The food here is good but it doesn't stretch into the great category. We tried this place once long ago and I remember thinking the pho wasn't as good as I could get elsewhere. So, it took a long time to come back. This time we tried the imperial rolls and the vegetarian fried egg noodles with crispy noodles. The imperial rolls were delicious and came with lots of lettuce and herbs to roll them into. The noodles were quite bland and I felt like the crispy noodles weren't what I was expecting. Seemed liked it was pulled out of a package and topped with hot veggies. Everything was made to generous portions and served with a smile. Revisited this place with some vegetarian friends, and sure glad we did! Last time I ate there was over 5 yrs ago and decided to go there since we had some out of town friends. Ordered all vegetarian dishes; sauteed tofu with eggplant, green papaya salad, vegetarian curry, vegetarian imperial rolls...and rice. The first 3 were really good! However the imperial rolls were so-so ... (I think the non vegetarian ones are better.) But all in all, a nice light vegetarian dinner, and food with the nice consistent taste as I remember last time. Very disappointed first of all, they did not let us know right upfront that they charge a 18% gratuity for five people . The bill was not itemized. It was just a total of the bill showing at the very top, the gratuity, then total and tax . They "X" where you would leave a tip. We asked if we could have something extra added to our PHO and they said cannot but once we said we'll pay extra, they were fast in telling us , can do! Nestled in the restaurant strip of Kaimuki, next to Via Gelato, Hale Vietnam is a reliable eatery that delivers consistently. Spacious enough where there's never a wait. Ample parking in the lot adjacent to the restaurant. Imperial rolls are a must get every visit. The most delicious spring rolls wrapped in rice paper and deep fried. I'm usually the person that goes to pho restaurants with others and gets something other than pho. All the things I have tried here, I've enjoyed. This long-time restaurant in Kaimuki has been here for ages. The restaurant is nice and clean and the wait staff is very friendly and helpful. The food is very tasty especially the broth which probably was simmering for hours. The wait was a little longer than anticipated, however, it meant that everything was prepared fresh. Prices are a little higher than we would like to pay, however, you are paying for a nice restaurant with good food, so it's good to treat yourself once in awhile! Hale Vietnam service continues to decline with staff changes. I called them to explain to the owner but the owner's wife hung up on me before she even listens to my complaint. My complaint was about the service we received on 17-April-26. I invited the owner of a leading transportation tour company to have him bring tourists to the restaurant but because we received poor and insulting service he decided he will never come back again. We ordered $92 food enough for 4 people that filled the small table they gave us, and we requested to move to a bigger table but staff refused. There were 3 bigger tables not reserved, available and never taken, but staff refused to move us claiming it is too late to move to a bigger table. I have been a customer of Hale Vietnam since they opened and now regret inviting important people under this failing management. read more

This is painful to write this review , Ive been going there since they opened, maybe 30 years.It was my go-to Vietnamese restaurant. Not anymore :( We ordered 2 phos to go and said meat inside.Which means you don't want rare meat.When I get take out from other Vietnamese restaurants they put meat in broth or in tin foil. They put raw meat in the noodles which turned all of our noodles bright red with blood. It was so awful I just threw mine in trash. I understand with food prices being so high they can't control how their prices have sky rocketed BUT -poor customer service, which we received combined with my noodles swimming in blood has made this restaurant a big fat NOOOOO WAAAAY ever again will I go there. read more
