The Goma Tei chain is the hubs and kid's favorite resto for tantan ramen. We've been patronizing both Kahala and Ala Moana locations (and the Ward one before they closed) since the kid was in first grade. It has become tradition to have birthday dinners here, and this year is no different, for the kid's 17th! They usually order the same Tantan. This time the hubs tried the wonton, the kid got a basic (coz not hungry), and I asked for basic + egg + veggies but noodles on the side (they don't do substitutes). The egg was runny on the inside, to my surprise, but all good! I used to love their seafood fried rice, before prices went up so much. When it was first introduced, it was good for three meals (for me). Very worth it. Their lunch bento specials are also a great deal! The fried rice/curry combo is good for two meals. But available for takeout only because they're prepacked and refrigerated. Popcorn chicken, gyoza, goma wings, and hamburger steak are all excellent. The XO sauce is also delicious. Take out dinners were very disappointing . Veg. Tan Tan ramen broth was totally bland - no salt or seasoning at all except for spicy sauce in small container. Very small portion of ramen noodles (compared to dining in). Curry rice was mainly lots of rice and only very small portion of curry. Cold chicken w/ udon noodles also very small portion . They need larger boxes for take out orders & give proper same portion as dining in. Or else charge lesser price for takeout orders . It has been awhile since we had ramen at GomaTei.... Mom and I was there for the drive to have her walk indoors since she's 93 years old. She had her order of her favorite ramen shoyu ramen noodles! Their gyoza which was plumped and juicy plus delicious. I didn't need to dip into the gyoza sauce as much! I'm very particular in the ramen itself since we go to Japan quite often. There's not much delicious ramen but Goma-tei has the best ramen noodles I had . My noodles has to be the right texture cook el dente and the soup that accommodate it! Easy location in Kahala Mall next to the theaters. Ample tables-chairs and an oval ramen bar seating set up. I was welcomed in and sat by the oval seating area since all the tables were occupied. Menus are easy to read with their accompanying picture. Lots of new menu items like their fish balls and it seems their truffle ramen is now an established menu item. I like that there is a myriad of topping and add-ons ranging from meats, mushrooms, veggies and extra sauces. Also, one can request heat levels for their multiple soup bases. The service is quick and to the point. The size of their ramen in their orange bowls satisfies Mr Bland. I took my leftovers home. After a busy morning, two friends and I headed over to Goma Tei at Kahala Mall for some tasty ramen. I had the Mapo Tofu Ramen, a dish I haven't eaten in a very long time and was not disappointed. The broth had just the right amount of heat, and the tofu and noodles were plentiful. Right on top of the soup was a fried egg, which hit the spot and provided added protein My friends had Tan Tan with Fish Dumplings (I may not have the name in the right order) and enjoyed it. Located in Kahala Mall right next to the movie theaters, it's busy but service is fast and there's ample seating with both counter and table options. A little after lunch time around 1:30PM, my friend and I only waited a few minutes to be seated on a Saturday. We ordered the Fish Dumplings in Hot and Sour Soup and Tan Tan Ramen with an Ajitama (Marinated Soft Boiled Egg). Both of the broths were delicious! A little salty, but lots of umami! Hot and sour soup is not for everyone since it is quite vinegary (I love vinegar!), but if you're struggling to pick from the large menu, I definitely recommend the Tan Tan soup! I also recommend adding an Ajitama because the egg is cooked to perfection with a jammy yolk and goes perfectly with ramen! The Fish Dumplings were okay, nothing amazing. Gomatei probably won't blow your mind, but their broths are flavorful and it's reasonably priced. Tried to take the most photogenic photo I could, promise. Wanting to try something a little different, I got Gome-Tei's new Miso Wakame Ramen. It had a very flavorful broth, much closer to a traditional shoyu-miso ramen you'd get in Japan. The broth also contained bits of mushroom, which I enjoyed throughly. But I do prefer the Wakame Tan-Tan. I would try it if it's available though! I hope they continue to do more miso based dishes. Service was good, tables were clean, and the food came out fast. We started date night at this place for dinner. There was a wait list when we arrived. We waited about five minutes before getting seated. They have limited tables, so we were fine sitting at the one long table that's shared with others. We ordered a seafood tan tan ramen $19.50, curry udon noodle $14.95 and goma wings $10.50. I also got a soft poached egg in my noodles $2.25. The seafood ramen came with just overcooked shrimp and the fluffy type calamari, which is not my preference. The broth was on the salty side. The curry udon was good. The curry was the perfect consistency and the udon had a nice chew. The goma wings were the best. It was marinated and fried to a crisp. It came with five pieces. Been twice in the last month...a lot considering it's been easy a couple years since I been to any of the locations. But at Kahala, after going to Fun Factory, easy to take baby, and another time just in the area. And they are really nice there. 1st time - ordered our food. 4 tables who were seated and ordered after us got their food. All I got was char siu donburi and Keiki Ramen with an egg added. Baby kept asking where the food was. She was getting hangry but luckily I had a juice box to hold her over. The guy went to check on it multiple times. Finally food came and Baby inhaled. I wasn't super hungry and was more concerned getting her fed. I had timed it so would be perfect to go home and bocha/nene. Delays put us back at least 30 min there, and the put us driving home in much heavier traffic. Oh well. 2nd time went for a late lunch so pretty empty-ish. I got shoyu ramen which was incredibly salty. I pulled all my noodles out before it oculd get soaked in. Hubs got tan-tan and that seemed over-goma-ish. So thick. I was a little disappointed. More Chinesey over Japanesey...very strong overpowering rather than subtle flavors. Baby was happy and ate a decent amount. I visited Goma Tei on August 5th and had the Wonton Tantan Ramen--it was just as delicious as I remembered. The flavors are so consistent, and it's always a treat. What made this visit extra special was bringing my daughter for the first time. She had the fish dumplings and shrimp and absolutely loved every bite. It's so great that there are delicious options for both kids and adults--she was happy, and I was happy! The staff and the owner were also incredibly nice and welcoming, which made the whole experience even better. I haven't been here for about a year but after going last night, I can't help but think to myself that the Tan Tan Ramen had more flavor before. Something wasn't right. It tasted watered down and fell short of boldness. I wanted to get appetizers but $10.50 for gyoza just doesn't work for me. Sorry, I'm kinda cheap. I don't want to spend upwards of $40-$50 for dinner. They should introduce a happy hour special. The service was very fast and the staff were very polite. I appreciate the counter seating for a quick dining experience, especially for two people. Overall, people seem to love it here. The ramen is decent but I would prefer spending my money at a genuine Japanese ramen establishment. Also, the 3% credit surcharge is bonkers. read more

Seafood fried rice . FYI I love the Tan Tan Ramen but I just ate there the day before so decided to try something new. The seafood fried rice came with whole Shrimps and calamari pieces. The seafood smelt like strong rotting seafood. We asked the nice waiter and he took the piece of calamari on my fork back to the chef and came back and said that's what it should be like. The rich broth made the dish but the bits of pork and pickles were perfectly cooked and sat atop ramen noddles that carried the broth forward very well. The place is a bit noisy when it's crowded. Reliable ramen at decent prices. If you find yourself hungry while in or near Kahala Mall, this sit-down restaurant is a good option if you're looking for a bit more than the food court. My preferred ramen broth is the tantan - which is a creamy sesame base - it's rich, and just a touch spicy. If that's not your thing, the shoyu has no spice but is a nice flavorful broth. Noodles are generous and cooked well. I don't love the char siu here - it's just a bit chewy, dry, and the fat doesn't seem seared at all. Personally I'd go for one of the other toppings. We tried the fried wontons today and probably won't get them again. They were ok. I appreciate that they're homemade. They just weren't a homerun for any of us. My husband had the fish dumpling hot and sour soup. This Gomatei in Kahala Mall located right beside the Consolidated Theater wing and though is always quite busy they always seem to have a place for you either at any one of ten four top tables or their super long counter that seems to seat a dozen on each side. Their menu is quite massive and seems to expand beyond the traditional Japanese bowl from Fish dumplings, Won Ton and even a Truffle Ramen! Tonight I'm trying something different, Hot & Sour Soup. As I was waiting for my food outside they were giving out free samples of their new menu item "Rainbow Pickled Salad" and some drinks (milk tea, lemon iced tea or plantation tea) and a sweet young man asked if I'd like a free sample of the item offered and went outside to bring it to me which was so thoughtful and sweet, while the girl who brought out my ramen couldn't be more the opposite as I could barely hear her calling out my bowl and dropped it on the seat next to me which felt rude while another young man brought my gyoza right beside my bowl and was nice. The vibe is very cozy and welcoming with cute kids art drawings on the wall as I enjoyed my hot bowl of ramen which was yummy loved the thin noodles cooked perfectly the spicy sour soup really comfort my long work week and gave me that much needed energy. We ordered Shredded pork & Szechuan Pickle Sunho with hot and sour soup (No. 18) , the Tan Tan Ramen (No. 1) and an order of gyoza. No. 18 was very spicy and vinegary tasting. If you like hot and sour soup, you can order this one. 3 out of 5 stars. No. 1 was too oily for my taste. The soup base was sesame oil based? The char siu pork slice was chewy and bland. 2 out of 5 stars. The gyoza was filled and cooked perfectly. 4 out of 5 stars. This was the best dish we ordered. Service was spotty. I needed to get the attention of multiple servers for water and later for the bill. I ended up having to walk into the back of the restaurant to pay the bill because every time I tried to get the attention of a server to pay the bill, it's like tunnel vision overcame each server. When work tells me to work in Kahala for the day I say "say less," because I know just where I want to go for lunch. I remember my first time trying Goma Tei was the ramen shop in Pearlridge, and to see it thriving and still putting out great food for every visit year after year makes it my go-to when I'm in the area and I don't know what I want to eat. On the inside, Goma Tei looks consistently the same at all their locations. What I really love is that this is one of the only spots on island that have a high bar that easily accommodates those like me who dine alone during their lunch break. I don't know why, but dining at that bar is different, I've even dined there with a group of ten as well! Don't ask us how we did it, guess we just got lucky. On this day specifically, I decided to do take-out because I wanted to sick in the breakroom and eat to help train and be available if needed. Even when the food is take-out, it still tasted great! You can choose to sit at a very long counter , a table, or either My friend who eats here regularly got the shoyu tantan ramen. I got the fish dumplings with shoyu soup and noodles. The dumplings were filled with a mixture of sole and other goodies in a wrapper that was nice and not too thick. The noodles were just the right texture and the broth was flavorful.
