Locals doing locals dirty.. drove my car there for a repair, they tell me they can't do it and it's not worth it. Call me back later to tell me my car won't start and they want 1500 for a starter. TOW the car to another mechanic that fixes the car in a day. So they didn't diagnose the problem correctly but still wanted to charge me, somehow made my car non operable, and were pushy dicks about it the whole time. I had my car towed here, and they dropped everything to help me right away. The mechanic quickly found a loose battery cable, fixed it on the spot, and charged me so reasonably it was unbelievable. He was incredibly kind, professional, and honest -- didn't take advantage of me at all. He also noticed I had my dog with me and made sure I was comfortable while waiting. He's not only an excellent mechanic but also a genuinely good (and very handsome!) person. His father helped me here over 40 years ago, and it's amazing to see that same level of integrity carried on. Everyone in the shop -- including the former chef who now works as a mechanic and the man in the office -- was fantastic. They even told me about their Happy Taco spot, which I can't wait to try because apparently the tacos are amazing! I couldn't recommend this shop more. Inconsiderate Customer Service. I made an appointment on a Friday afternoon for the following Wednesday to drop-off. Mind you this auto shop is an hour from my house. Dropped off the car when requested early on Wednesday, arranged a ride from my wife to pick me up after. (2 hour time commitment) Wednesday evening, no call, update on repairs. Thursday evening, I called front desk, they said they would call me back. No response. Friday morning receive a call and they said they won't do the work I requested and refused to work on my car. Couldn't arrange a pickup Friday, so went to get the car on Saturday, they aren't open on the weekends, so was planning to use a spare key from home. Drove down Saturday one hour to pickup my car, again pre-arranging my wife to drop me off. When I went to unlock the car, they didn't even lock the car. Mind you there is thousands of dollars of custom equipment inside. (2 hour time commitment) They have changed management, and I have had nothing but underwhelming customer service experiences from the prior management and the new one. I worked at the Ritz Carlton, objectively one of the best customer service operations in history, so I know good service. I won't even get into the details of the poor work done on my car in the past. There are plenty of great mechanics over the hill, or in Pacifica/El Granada, I do not recommend this place at all. They wasted 4 hours of my wife and myself's valuable time, and left my car unlocked in there parking lot. read more

So a month ago, these guys saved my butt with a very fast and solid radiator replacement. Frankly, without detail, they saved my transmission. I went in today with a tire problem, and they fixed me up at no charge. I'm very impressed. Please don't expect free tire service, unless you have already used them, but do expect good service!!! After paying over $3500, I will not be using this auto shop or recommending it. The owner doesn't have the experience to be in business. He puts his lack of expertise on the customer. He argues with his wife on the phone and avoids talking to the customer and avoids explaining why the shop failed at their services. The shop tech is lazy and doesn't clean up. Left oil stains on seat, door panel. Also said he installed both spacers and had to remove them because they were the wrong part. So why is there only markings on one part? Seems like I was overcharged. Bad business if the owner is relying on scamming locals and ruining his reputation. Davey is dishonest and lacks experience. Do not go to this business. I was down in Half Moon Bay, visiting the beaches on a quiet weekday. As I was backing out of a spot, I heard metal scraping and felt something dragging under my car. After taking a look, there was some type of metal protector plate loose. Not being local, I relied on Yelp for some advice on who was in the area and trustworthy. I called Half Moon Bay Auto repair, explained the situation and they told me to come on over-they'd take a look. I was so relieved since I certainly didn't want to drive back to Walnut Creek with something dragging under my car. It was a bit tricky to find the place but the nice woman who answered the phone gave me good directions and when I arrived she remembered our conversation and had her team look at my car right away. It turned out they were easily able to reattach the plate and reinforce it. It took 20 minutes and cost me about $25. I was extremely grateful for their help and was so happy that I was able to go about the rest of my day with the piece of mind my car was fixed. I made an appointment to drop off my 2006 Toyota Corolla due to a sudden oil leak. I after two days in the shop, they said the problem may be a leak from the timing chain cover but they couldn't be sure. On the 4th day, they still couldn't find the leak that it may be coming from somewhere else. I picked up the car and took it to a shop around the corner. Within 1 hour the new shop put the car up on the rack and found the oil filter was loose due to a recent oil change. Also, HMB Auto didn't put the plastic engine cover back on properly causing me to make two trips to the shop without them finding the original problem was as simple as a loose oil filter. I found these mechanics very unprofessional and didn't seem to want to work. When I complained to the staff inside I was told this issue would be brought to the attention of 'Upper Management' but I wanted to share my experience with my neighbors. read more

My car received the best repair from the mechanic/s at HMB Auto Repair that I could hope for. The car was towed into the shop and the work began immediately. It's a Ford Focus and the water pump was a beast to fix, but with the keen work by the awesome mechanic, it was fixed. They kept the price to the original estimate, regardless of the time spent fixing the problem and while finding other broken things that cropped up during the repair time. It wasn't cheap though...$40.00, I saved $5 for paying in cash, had I paid with credit card it was going to be $45 plus 3% convenience fee. Had I paid with a debit card the cost was going to be $45 without the 4% credit card fee. The cost seems a bit excessive. After taking my van in they expedited the process to get my van back even when they were short staffed. When the total bill was more than the estimate they reimbursed some of the bill to make up the difference between the estimate and final bill. Car broke down on a Sunday(which is unfortunate cause all auto shops are closed) off Highway 1. I managed to hazard light my way into this little shop to leave for overnight service. I was a bit uneasy not knowing what was wrong with the car or if they could fix it. Luckily an employee(who happens to own Daveys Smog just a few doors down) drove up and put my mind at ease. Oh my gosh-I love this place and I'm shocked there is one bad review. I have been going here for years but Jessica is the BEST!! I took my Sequoia here but got a BMW so have it under warranty. Doesn't matter-they service my Porsche and my teenage daughter's keep and we wouldn't go anywhere else. As soon as the BMW warranty is up and I don't get free oil changes, I will move that car to HMB auto too. They are the best. I trust then for everything! They do full service. They are completely honest and give you the cheapest options but also let you know what the full service will cost. I don't go anywhere else. I have a 2016 Ram Cummins Diesel. It kept throwing CELs related to the DEF system. Davey diagnosed the problem and tried ordering a new DEF pump, They were back ordered 90 days! I found an OEM part on EBay and despite the fact that it did not come from one of HMB Auto's suppliers Davey put it in for me. Truck has run well ever since. Having a competent diesel mechanic on the coast is huge as most independent shops will not do complex diesel repairs. read more

Will never go back ever again. They lost me on the 2nd repair. They put in a new alternator in the wifes car, it failed (on the 280 on a rainy night) and had to tow the car back to Half Moon Bay. The alternator was, get this, 13 months old. NO WARRANTY. They told me "they other manager was buying cheap Mexican-made alternators, we use better ones now". They gave me the big break by giving me a free oil change. Since I have had 6 cars including the two I had then 4 I have now they have lost thousands of dollars of repairs. Somehow one of the leaf springs broke on our 5th wheel in our travels. We noticed it while staying at the state campground at Francis Beach in Half Moon Bay. We went to their shop and Jessica ordered the part we needed. They installed the new leaf spring first thing this morning so we could head home. They were awesome! I would highly recommend them. Update review. Please read original review, so that update makes sense. I just failed smog & it turns out 1 of the ignition coils needed to be switched out. I asked my new Mechanic "I had 1 replaced a few years ago, its not that one is it?" He looked at all 3 & said, "none of them have been replaced, they are all original". I asked, " what do you mean?" "All 3 are original (Toyota /Denso Ignition coils) with red lettering, when they are replaced, they have black lettering with only "Denso" written on them." Of course I was incredulous and proceeded to ask other Mech buddies of mine & even a auto parts store to make sure that that was true. It "IS" true. My Mechanic took pictures of the "3" to show me that they were red with "Toyota" written on them, so there would be no misunderstanding. I decided to call HMB Auto, because they definatively said "we only have to replace one, as one covers 2 cilinders". Nevermind the fact that they had also said that "they needed to replace spark plugs and wires", when those were brand new. Right off the bat "Dave Eck", was condescending, rude and obnoxious. He immediately asked me "who is this Mechanic?" He denied everything and stated in no uncertain terms, "new ignition coils come with Toyota/Denso written on them". That is a bald face lie!!! All you have to do is call any supply house or Mechanic that you may know, to find out, when you replace ignition coils, they no longer have the word "Toyota" written on them in red. They come with black lettering with only "Denso" written on them. They immediately went into "Alternative facts" mode, and started attacking me. "Jessica" even went so far as to mention the fact that all my reviews are one star only. By her mentioning that, I can only assume she is implying that all I do is complain. Let me give a brief explanation on that. I have never been a person who leaves reviews at all. Its a pain in the A$$. There are companies though, that do business so bad somebody needs to do something. I made a decision "a rule" to only leave reviews for "them". In other words, I dont leave good reviews, luckily 99% of my experiences are good. I dont leave reviews, for instance, if my soup was cold, or the waitress was rude. It has to be so bad, that this business is basically forcing my hand. HMB Auto is definately one of those businesses. Everything in their behaviour before and after is disgusting. It begs the question.... How do they keep in business for 26 years?? In such a small town... I guess it's the same mentality as the "Trump" phenomenom. There are always going to be suckers in this world who believe the con-man. There are always going to be people who let themselves be intimidated by someone that is rude, Obnoxious and condescending, no matter if they (consumer) have the "Actual" instead of the " Alternative" facts on their side. I have "Absolute truth & proof" on my side, & they still act as if "they" do...Alternative facts be damned!! In summation, HMB Auto failed miserably to fix my "Check Engine" problem. Even after the bold statement "we have a $10k machine that gets it right the 1st time. They would have ripped me off on the spark plugs & wires, & they "did" rip me off on the "ignition coil". I took my car in for a knock engine check engine light code and when I took it in I requested they drive the car up 92 because the car is only able to top 30 miles an hour going up the hill. I paid over $700 and the check engine light was turned off and I was told they tested it and it drives fine and to call them if any issues come up. Well, an issue came up as soon as I took my car onto 92. unable to top 30 mph my check engine light immediately came back on and I was frankly scared and afraid I wouldn't be able to make it up the hill. fortunately I did and I took it back in and they kindly for free ran tests on my car. however, they tell me it's a check engine code that says my fuel is too rich and my catalytic converter is completely clogged and I would need to replace the Catalytic converter, which I replaced two years ago. Being a $1900 expense I couldn't afford the service so I took my car back. I go in my car, and I regret not getting out and asking about my battery light being on and why the car was soundOmg even worse and now i am finding out I may have a failing alternator because when I jumpstart my car it dies in a few minutes. This is disgraceful service to not only ignore my request entirely but give my car in an even worse condition then when I first brought it to the shop. I paid $200 for a check engine diagonsitics and they didn't find any of these problems beforehan? It's shameful and this community deserves to know my experience to avoid the possibility of being scammed like I was. My car is now completely dead!! The staff is friendly, honest, and keep me updated on the issues. They figured the issue and sent me on my way. I went by early on a saturday morning and the business was not even opened but Dave was there and had the bay opened. I had a slow leak in my tire and he was gracious enough to take the time and fix the leak even though it was his day off. It was a great human experience to meet such a nice guy. I called the following week and worked with Jessica to get a new pair of tires and again I was very pleased with the experience. I purchased tires at Half Moon Bay Auto repair because I was offered a 70,000 mile warranty on the suggested four tires. After 30,000 miles they told me I needed new tires. They agreed that I had kept up the maintenance to keep the warranty valid. But it has been over two months of back and forth excuses for replacement tires and I'm still driving on worn out tires. I have been going to this business for several years now and have been satisfied with their work. But when there is a problem I have not found them to be helpful. When they resolve the problem I hope to post a positive review. read more

This place as proven time and time again to be a money suck as well as a time suck. Every time I bring my car here for one thing that should be a quick fix it turns in to a multi day dance of "oh while fixing that we found..". The customer service is B+ and makes it hard for one snap on them for upselling you every chance they get. I have found it might be better to just re tow your car to anywhere else in town. For convenience of getting your car back within the week and not paying a ton for the labor charges they decided your vehicle needed. When your problem is a simple fix of just having the car start. *car is a 82 el Camino for reference on how basic each fix should be* *edit hours later to one star from two because i was given my car back with a broken ignition switch and now can only be turned off a89nd on with needle nose plier. Lol and some how free of charge for making my car worse....nice.* I still have no idea how you fix the small problem and in turn destroy the way a car normally turns on and off *another edit: while taking apart my car for no reason and destroying the key ignition they somehow managed to disconnect my headlights. Amazing, how?? . I'm so offended at this shop and their business practices Lmao brought it back 3/6/16 calm and called ahead of time and the owner refused to fix what his employees broke because of this review, how is this leagal??? read more

I love Half Moon Bay Auto Repair (HMBAR)!!! It would be hard to overstate the quality of HMBAR's employees, Jessica, specifically. On a Saturday, my car broke down. I am not from SF and was borrowing a friends car. Naturally, I felt high levels of stress, which continued to build as I realized all the mechanics were closed. Nonetheless, I decided to walk to HMBAR and found Jessica there cleaning. Despite them being closed, Jessica agreed to come and give my car a look.
