I live in HMB but hadn't ever used these guys. I needed some regular service and my AC was out on my 2005 Xterra. They were able to figure out the issue quickly and do the oil change fast. They got the parts in a day and had my vehicle back and now works great. I will be back for sure, highly recommended. They are not a cheap place $195 labor rate as of 3/2025 which is more than my regular mechanic but the place is well run and this is about going rate everywhere. The regular maintenance was about $160 for Amsoil oil change so that is about right and I love to run amsoil. read more

Had some funny noises from my Subaru while on a coastal day trip so I pulled in here and they checked it right away. Looks like I wasn't paying enough attention to the oil level it was past my oil change interval, and it was pretty low, so they topped that off and also found noise from the axles and wheel bearings which I kinda knew about, but they were very fair in describing it realistically and provided a very affordable estimate. IN SHORT, WHAT A HORRIFIC EXPERIENCE. When I dropped the car off I asked Jason if I needed to explain how to prepare the car for the oil change since every modern Porsche 911 is different. When I went back to see if the car was ready, I saw that Phil's mechanic had opened the wrong exterior rear part and therefore wasn't able to take the required 5 plastic snap-on/snap-off parts off. I addressed this to Jason and he got immediately very upset and told me his mechanic knows what to do. I told Jason I didn't talk to the mechanic at all, only him. Jason lost it and told me to get out and to bring the car to Porsche because he had enough customers, he didn't need me and he kept on telling me that I couldn't tell his "boys" what to do. The 2 (slightly oily) engine covers the mechanic was able to take off were laying on top of my brand new ($8,000) convertible top. (Oily parts put on a fabric convertible top can permanently mar it.) The mechanic put (with my help) the 2 parts back. WHAT A TERRIBLE SERVICE, I was in no position to act up since I was depending on Phil's to get my car ready right before I had to have surgery, so I feel very comfortable saying that it wasn't me who created this for me a horrible situation. read more

Brakes were screeching, brought my car in and they said the front brakes needed to be replaced. $500 later, the screeching was still loud as ever. Brought it to another mechanic who said they did a horrible job installing and I needed to replace them completely. read more

What an amazing experience. I hit some construction debris and had two flat tires. I called Costco for tires and after waiting 4 days they cancelled my order due to being sold out. America's Tire Center wouldn't answer their phone and Big O tires left me on hold for 20 minutes. A quick Google search and I found Phils Tire Pro in Half Moon Bay. I called in the morning, they had two new tires delivered to their shop within 3 hours. I drove in and the car was ready an hour later!!! Great customer service, friendly staff and reasonable prices. I unfortunately got a nail in my tire the day before this review and my father recommended Phil's Tire Pros. I called this morning and was able to drop off my flat tire for a patch job. Their quote to patch tires includes dismounting the tire, the patch itself, remounting, and checking all tire pressure for a very fair price. They even put my spare back into the storage area under my trunk cover instead of just in my trunk like other places would. Saw what appeared to be a staple in my mother in-laws tire, and she insisted on going to James Ford, they looked at it and said you need a new tire, and that would be $386. Told her to let's check on something else. Googled Phil's and a young lady says it looks close to the side wall and would need to break it down and see. They take it around back out of sight, come back and says you don't need anything, and hands me a small piece of a metal shard and says it didn't go into the tire, the tire is fine! No charge! A trusted source referred me to Phil 's when I needed a wheel bearing assembly replaced on my Outback. The woman on the phone was very friendly, got all the relevant info and came in with a quote about $20 below several others I'd called. Since I would rather support a local small business and I didn't have to drive over the hill from the coast, this was an easy choice. I made an appointment for two days later, arrived early, and they got right on it. Not only did they have it done in under an hour, they came in $80 under the estimate. In full disclosure, I share that I did not have any paid services completed. However, this is what makes the individuals at Phil's even more deserving of a 5 star review. I suppose you could view this rating as a character, business values, integrity rating. Don't we want the businesses we support to have strengths in these areas? I was driving down to HMB, from SF, to work here for a week. My tire pressure light went on. I stopped by Phil's while walking around the next day. A lovely woman said they would absolutely check my tires if I returned with car. She was so welcoming even though she knew I don't live here so unlikely a future customer. Later in the afternoon I was bringing my car over. Regretfully, I didn't see the sidewalk in my parking space. When my wheel made contact it broke the plastic piece that lines around the wheel. After my fight with the last plastic part, still attached, that was keeping me from being able to drive, I got it and on my way I went. I was very concerned if I had caused any damage as have numerous freeway trips in the next few days. I was hoping to hold off replacing the part until home next week. Phil's was so kind. The gentleman addressed the tire pressure concerns. He then raised the car to be sure I was safe for these drives I need to do before replacing the now missing part. He began addressing everything within minutes of my arrival. He was friendly, kind, attentive and wasn't trying to sell me anything. He was just caring for the safety concern I shared. He took the time to actually look and investigate, while even knowing I do not live here so unlikely a regular customer. I was so impressed with everyone. I assure you if ever a tire need or concern, I would not hesitate to visit Phil's. People that do the right thing because it is who they are and not for the dollar are people that are trustworthy and professional. For the first time ever, I experienced a flat tire (down to 10 psi!). To add to the inconvenience, the tire could not be temporarily fixed because of foam in the tire. The closest tire shop did not have the right tire. The next Tesla service appointment was weeks away. So, I over inflated the tire and was able to drive the 10 miles to get home. What a relief to find Phil's. Jason, the owner, is extremely professional and knowledgeable. He ordered the tire (my tire was discontinued, but he knew the alternative unlike the other tire shop I had "limped" to originally). And, the new tire was installed the very next day. We live in El Granada and I really like to keep our money on the coast where possible. We've called ahead about a straightforward tire repair here and shown up twice, and been turned away both times because it "takes 45 minutes and we don't have time." Once it was because of an (unpublished) early closure on NYE (which, again, the phone call didn't reveal) and today it was because they were full of appointments. Nobody ever suggested at any point that we should set an appointment time. Do people really know when their tires are going to fail? So, I'll give HMB Auto a try.. they said "come by anytime! Should only take 15-20 minutes." She laughed at me when I asked if I needed an appointment. I have far higher hopes! I have no idea of the level of service Phil's provides. It looks like a very well-run shop. Just wondering where the customer's time factors in? I've rearranged my day and dragged my family there to get me home *twice* and still don't have a functioning tire. Takeaway: Make an appointment, even if nobody suggests it. Don't count on same day service. Plan your punctures appropriately, people! Don't get towed here if you want to get home anytime soon. read more

Our third visit to Phil's. First was tires for my wife and my car. Price equal to those over the hill, much better and LOCAL service. Second time was a break job and 60k service for my wife's car. They told me rear breaks had more life left and scheduled time to come back for rear breaks so I could use up remaining pads (saving me $$).
