Excellent art work from local artists adorn the walls for purchase. Friendly and helpful staff, very knowledgable. They are able to point you in the right direction for that hard to find gift. This place is awesome! In a cyber world where no one actually interacts with one another, this bookstore reminds me of a time that was better and simpler. You can get everything from brand new paperbacks to old hard covers in good condition. Bukowski to Megan Maud Montgomery and JK Rowling and MORRISSEY biography picture book! Need i say more! Located on the north side of Greenleaf Ave near Bailey St is a great Little (HUGE!) used and new bookstore, probably the best bookstores in Whittier. Also probably my new favorite Used bookstore especially since Dutton's closed up in North Hollywood. The selection of hard to find books was surprisingly decent. The place is pretty clean and doesn't stink like so many other used bookstores I've been too, and it's very very big, the prices are okay, but its more about finding books I can't get normally at a regular bookstore. Very cool I will defiantly be returning soon. read more

I'm glad that Whittier finally got a book store. The store is big and has a lot of selection. if they don't have it in stock they can order it. My only problem is the decor. They should really hire someone. The layout of the shelves is not working and there is so much waisted space. Being an Interior Designer i'm very critical. I found this place while eating at the nearby crepes cafe on my birthday. Walking in this place it was so massive with nearly every single inch filled with books. It's a book lovers dream. I went for Stephen King novels and there was an entire shelf! The store gave me a box because I wanted so many of them. The books are fairly cheap but I wanted so many that I didn't have enough money. I will definitely be going back but i'll make sure to have more money on me. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE !!!! I remember the bookstore before the new owners and I still liked to go in a browse even though it was kinda creepy and was a little over priced. Now I LOVE the energy , artwork , music and the people. Even 2 girls working there (wish I could remember there names) recommended couple good books and comic books. I had to go back for the rest of the comic book series because I fell in love. I don't mind paying a little bit more for certain books or comic book series for a local bookstore, but I think everything is evenly priced. I am extremely happy that this bookstore didn't close down because now it's a popping spot for all ages :) read more

This place USED to be a favorite of mine. However I don't think I'll be returning anymore. They used to give fair prices for books but recently I sold SEVEN boxes full of great books to them. I asked what they were looking for and I was told classics and school books in good condition and that's exactly what 90% of the books I brought them were. After loading the books one box at a time without help offered into the store they very briefly looked over the boxes and offered me $10 for EVERYTHING! Insulted yet exhausted I took it just to avoid taking all seven heavy boxes back. I felt preyed on. They knew I wouldn't want to take them all back on my own, and they certainly weren't offering to help so they more than low balled me... there was over 150 books there! Very very very disappointed in what they have become here. Guess I'll be driving to LA for a new spot that treats me right! read more

What I love most is their selection, browsing in here is one of my favorite things, they could use a bit more organization though. My son and I walked into HOB tonight looking for a quick read, (all our books and iPad packed up from our move). We were welcomed, without too much pressure and just enough information, into this magical place. On our walk home my son asked me, " that place had the all the books and comics I love, when can we go back?". I'm not sure if you can get a better review of a modern day book store. As a book lover, and one who bemoans the loss of brick-and-mortar bookstores, I hate to say this, but my first (and last) visit left me with a vague icky feeling of being lied to and taken advantage of. I had a trunk full of books I had been wanting to take in, and a friend who needs to borrow my car served as the cattle prod I needed. I wish I had read the review from July 2016, because I would not have wasted my time and subjected myself to negative energy had I done so. Long story short, I was told the store could only use 3 piles of books for a total of $6. Unfortunately, with all the rain we have had, the edges of my trunk leaked and some water seeped in and got to the bottoms of the boxes. The guy going through the books told me that some of the books I had were out of date or were titles that were not requested, but there was also the problem of the mold. When I was going to take the rest of the books back and drop them off at Goodwill, he told me that Goodwill wouldn't want them because of the moldy condition. Well, how did the boxes in the back seat of my car get damaged? Either every rejected book was moldy (and if so, how did he find some to sell), or else some of them were still in very usable condition. As I took the books in, I rearranged most of the books and consolidated them into boxes. And I know for a fact that most of the books were still perfectly readable - especially the ones in my back seat that had never seen a drop of water. I guess the guy at this store is the grand arbiter of what books Goodwill will accept and reject. Anyway, I was still willing to take the rejected books back to my car, but then I was told that $6 was for every book (and not just for the 3 piles of books that could be used by the store). Huh? So now they also pay you for rejected books? In hindsight I wish I had packed everything up and taken it back to my car. I have some older friends in local assisted living facilities and I could have donated a lot of the books to these places. I wish I had done this in the first place! But it was such a strange experience and I had such a strong ick feeling that I just wanted to get out of there. I wonder if a lot of the "rejected" books will suddenly become acceptable. Either that, or there is money to be made from recycled books. I wish I hadn't had this negative experience, because I am sure this is a store I would love. Who can find bookstores to browse in anymore? But I feel like there was a bait-and-switch of sorts. I was specifically told that the 3 piles were worth $6, but when I tried to take the remaining books I was told that $6 was for every book. The employee really did not want me taking back the rejected books. I refuse to patronize a business that cannot deal honestly with its customers! read more

This place is perfect. The staff are great and incredibly knowledgeable. The kid in me loves their comic book selection...I even buy from time to time. Their prices are great especially when they have sales. Tons of availability, and when not available, they will order for you if possible. I even get my children's "required reading" materials (school necessities) here. They even have poetry slams (readings) once a month. I have been several times and won't shop anywhere else! This bookstore has had a major makeover since it has changed management. The store is significantly more welcoming, the employees (which I learned are actually incredibly well trained volunteers!) are seriously helpful, and there is such a vast selection of books. I have been a loyal customer of this store since it went under new management (which is about four or five months ago) and I must say, their prices are incredible! They have so many sales and always seem to have a new selection of books (so I don't quite understand the negative feedback below when the poster says the collection of books was compiled by the previous owners.) In any case, they're always taking out the old books and replacing them with books that are new to the store. (Believe me, I've watched them restock the shelves many times.) Let's not forget their famous fire sales! They have these sales every once in a long while that are exclusive to their facebook members (which I am luckily a member of!) where the books are cheap. (And we're talking $1 cheap!) From what I remember from the last sale, the hardbacks were a dollar and the paper backs were $.50. Can you imagine that? The entire store was fair game and you better believe that I went home with boxes of books for less than $20! Their sales associates are so lovely and considerate. One greeted me at the door right away (which is a nice change from the cold atmosphere of the owners before) and helped me find my books. Thought I didn't find what I was looking for, they were determined to help me find alternatives to the books I wanted (which actually turned out to be better than the books I initially sought out to find!) I was so happy to see how much more less creepy and quiet this bookstore has become since changing ownership. no disrespect to the former owners but i never was comfortable there or with the staff. Now WOW its completely cool with art everywhere , music ,fun staff. i love it and with the open mic night , i feel so much creativity vibing from this joint. The staff is completely honest when buying the books and since the boos are USED. and i repeat to those complaing about not getting enoght for thier books ( USED ) they have to give you less so they can make a profit . anyone who knows business agrees surely. This review is strictly about selling books to this store. I like this book store, but will probably never sell to them. I brought around 60 books & some records to sell today & since it was my mom's first time there, we walked around for a bit until the guy told us he was ready with a offer. He did not explain how he came to the offer, but he said he could do $35 for all the books & records. I had no problem with the $35 offer. What made me walk away with all my books was when I asked to take back two books that weren't suppose to be there & he told me he would only give me $15 for the remaining books. When I asked him why, he said that's how the owner wanted things, that if you take any books back they cut the offer in half. I let him know he was actually cutting it more than in half & he went on to say he understands when people have issues with the offers. I didn't have a problem with the $35 offer, I had a problem with the offer dropping $20 over two books. As I spoke more with him he explained he was giving 20% of what they would sell them at, back to me. I work in resale so I completely understand that, no problem. He said he would have to go through them all again & wouldn't do it because if someone else came in to sell & he had other work to do. I asked him why he couldn't just subtract the 20% of the two books from the $35 offer. He repeated again that it wasn't how the owner wanted things done. The funny thing was, the apparent owner was standing right next to him behind the counter. Maybe she wasn't listening or aware, but I wasn't sure why he didn't just let her know that there an unhappy customer. I took back the books, but didn't care about the records. He gave me $5 for all the records which I used to purchase a book. As we left my mom mentioned she saw the owner taking to him. The reason for the 1 star? Instead of taking $2 (which was 20% of what they would have priced the two books at) off of the offer they took $20 off the original offer. It was ridiculous that that was how the "owner wanted things done". read more

Be careful when selling anything to this operation. I was point blank lied too when I inquired about their pricing of 'collectible' as opposed to just common shelf stock books.I put a bit of effort in compiling a cross section of books and drove 45 miles, which they were made aware of, to submit them for consideration. Was given the insulting/criminal offer of $20.00!!! At least 50 books. I angrily pulled out the books of high value, but still he was left a considerable profit...The point is the deception, caveat emptor'.....stay clear of the place. read more
