Of all the half price books locations, this is one of the smallest locations. Their immediate adjoining neighbors are Dollar General, Harbor freight tools, big lots and a specialty grocery store. They do sell records and comic books, but their selection is nowhere near the size of their Lamar/2222 location. The staff is friendly enough and at this time they're not so focused on the mask mandate as they used to be. One thing that I noticed that was conspicuously absent was the fact that there are no places to sit and read. It's a great place to turn your old used books, records, DVDs and CDs into cash, but don't expect to get much for them. read more

This Half Price Books seems pretty standard as far as Half Price Books go. We came here to sell books and then walked around the store while we were waiting. It was a little bit confusing on how we were supposed to sell books when we first walked in, but the staff helped us figure it out after we asked. They told us to put our books in a cart and we were like "what do we do with the cart?" which I guess is just leave it there at the front, but it was not super clear. Anyway, it all worked out, we got some money back for the books, not a whole lot given what we paid originally but better than nothing. The selection of books they have seemed decent too. They had a lot of different categories with multiple copies for some of them. Everything seems organized. Their rare books seemed cool, I'm not a collector or anything but they had some autographed stuff and old editions of books which were fun to look at. read more

This is one of the places I miss. What an inexpensive way to find good reading material. Yesterday's best sellers are today's discounted books sharing space here. Additionally, there are many out of print books that are still relevant or needed today. Imagine trying to repair a 20 year old vehicle, you could find a repair manual here. I'm a WWII history buff I located a couple of books covering that subject for a third of the original price. Inventory varies but you can search for in stock titles on line. Smaller location without a ton of easy parking. It's in a shopping center so you're fighting with the little ladies shopping at Dollar Tree down the sidewalk. The parking available in front of the store itself is really more or less for compact cars. My Honda Pilot baaaarely squeezed in. Not a huge store so not as much selection as other locations. Still a convenient spot in N Austin and tends to have a more complex selection (though more minimal) because it's not as busy as other HPB. read more

I got a really bad attitude from two female staff members today 4-11-22 around 5pm (1 Caucasian, 1 African American not that race matters, just describing so the managers knows who they are). I also used to get way more for selling common books. I brought in a bag with titles like Bless Me Ultima, Gossip Girl (DVD set), and Animal Farm. She only offered me $1.29 and a bad attitude when I asked to look up a book on parenting I wanted to have shipped to the store. Maybe these girls gave me attitude because of my huge pregnant belly? Kinda weird... I just think the attitude is sad on her part and definitely a downer for me because i book shop to relax. read more

I was doing a bit of bookshelf cleaning on Sunday afternoon and had three older medical texts that I had recently replaced. I decided to go up to this location and came in with low expectations based on my previous experiences with Half Price books. I expected to wander around the store for an hour and get offered pennies on the dollar for my three books. I was wrong. Very wrong, in fact. The gentleman at the counter took my books immediately, explained their buying process, and assured me that he'd be done very quickly. I had barely wandered through two aisles before he paged me. I came back to a very fair, perhaps even generous, offer. Granted, any money you get from reselling books is found money. But to have a reasonable offer that comes from a clearly explained process is definitely a pleasure in and of itself. read more

Disclaimer: I haven't been to any other Half Price Books, but I was impressed by the staff at this location. They were very helpful with locating the books I needed. Plenty of parking, and I do believe this location is smaller than other HPBs but, the selection is still great. Scored 3 books for $10 - what a steal! Still a great store! Always something unique to find in it. As I have moved away from Texas, I recently sold a shopping-kart-ful of books here. Although I mostly had my dad wait and do it since I was selling my DVD's and video games at the store nearby. It's very convenient! Everything worked very well. I think the employees at this book store are kinder and more professional than the jerks at the used dvd store. And my dad bought some obscure book he was very excited about! Unfortunately he accidentally left it in a hotel. So I guess that's the drama of a used book store. (we think he left it in a hotel in north Austin so it may well end up in this store again!) read more

Nicely organized store with a large, very organized music section. They seem to have a steady stream of customers, but also have a large selection of titles. I brought a stack of books to sell and found that they offered about the same amount as the store closest to me, on Anderson Mill Road. Which is next to nothing! So if you're looking to unload your bookcases, don't count on the proceeds helping much toward your new purchases. I'm a bookstore junkie, so I always seem to find something on the shelves or in the bins to take home and fill up my bookcases all over again. Electronic readers are probably more efficient, but to me they're not as fun. And you can't write in them. read more

This place is great...if you aren't expecting any level of customer service. I literally stood at the customer service desk for about 10 minutes before walking to the cash wrap to ask for help. Employees walked by...avoiding eye contact. My attempts to get attention fell on deaf ears. The cashier...the only person to acknowledge my presence, finally found someone to "help" me. The dude never once made eye contact or even looked at me. He began to search for my books in their system and then at the first opportunity, passed it off to another employee without any explanation. In the end, they didn't have any of the books I was looking for... Otherwise, I've always found great non-specific items when I just come here to browse. They should just get rid of the worthless staff and automate the place. read more

I love 1/2 Price Books, but I think this location is my favorite. Huge selection of books, very well kept and a friendly staff. Don't sell your books back expecting to make a fortune. I found an OOP book that I've been patiently hunting for a while at this HPB. I was there in person and needed assistance as the book was behind a locked shelf. After deciding I wanted it I could tell that the employee didn't want me to walk around with it so I asked for it to be left behind the register until I was ready to check out. He ASKED me my name so he could reserve it for me. After shopping around for less than 30 minutes I asked for the reserved book and was told that it was just purchased by someone who spotted it. I found out that they just moved the book to a visible side of the register with no name under it. They said that it was a honest mistake and gave me a lousy 15% off coupon. While the cashier was looking for another copy of the book online, the manager told her simply, "if it's gone, it's gone." The manager didn't even acknowledge that I was in front of her. What kind of customer service is that? I suspect that an employee told a friend about the book or bought it themselves, because they asked my name and still didn't reserve it. Also, I hope that race didn't play a role, because telling from the staff and most of the customer's demographics, I probably didn't appear to be a regular. The worse part was the apathy I got off of the staff in this situation. read more

Great LP and CD finds at decent prices but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take better care of collectible music while in your care. Two suggestions: - Find different price stickers for your LPs. Those big red price stickers quickly adhere to the back of LPs and, even when using sticker removing fluid, they leave horrible marks on priceless records. - For CD Box Sets with multiple discs, use a separate sleeve for each disc. I recently purchased a rare import CD set and all 6 discs were stacked on top of each other in one sleeve. 3 of the discs had light scratches throughout from poor storage. Please treat musical history with the respect it deserves!!! read more

I have always liked to browse hpd instead of just buying books on Amazon. Well until today where I was turned away from buying the books I was looking for for at least an hour. I went to pay with my debit card and oddly it was declined. I said I have more than enough money in my account and confirmed it on my bank app. The cashier told me she couldn't run my card again but I could come back in a few days to pay for them. I was annoyed and confused so I just left went outside and called my bank. They said it went through but hpb was the one that cancelled the transaction. I asked another employee that happened to come outside why the lady wouldn't try my card again. She said people try to run the card again to "trick the system". I was pissed feeling like I was treated like I was stealing or something. I went back in after getting my credit card out of the car, bought my books and I'm never shopping there again. Treating customers like this will send them straight on line to buy next time. Your store will shut down eventually treating customers like this. read more

Would get five stars but for the previously mentioned CHEAPNESS of the buyers. If you don't have an emotional attachment or a large investment in your books, just consider it recycling or donating them. 'Cuz you won't get diddly squat for them there! I prefer to donate my hardbacks to the library and paperbacks to Goodwill. But for the book buyer, this place is a jackpot! Plus, it has other stuff besides books. Music, movies, games, software, and kitschy gifts/ stationary. Great prices ensure you can always walk out of there with something cool. Especially if you hit the bargain racks outside! I only wish Stephen King and Dean Koontz would write faster, because I've already read everything in the store. read more

I visited this store (not this location) years ago and while I've always loved to read, I didn't care for this place. for used books, the prices were simply too steep, especially when some of them weren't in good condition. Times have changed, at this for this location. I visited a few months ago and have been back... at least a dozen times, or more. I absolutely love this store. I love their prices, love their clearance, love their movie options, as well as the games section. The staff there are so friendly, they go out of their way to help you or make you smile. I like that about a place. Customer service is almost always a deal breaker, either way. Luckily this place doesn't need to compromise one for the other to meet mutual grounds. They are solid on both ends. At any given time I can go in there and find new stuff, including that in clearance, which, by all means, is where I go first. There are some great deals out there. They line the outside (by Tuesday Morning) with Clearance racks and there are some in the back right corner of the store as well. The games section is just up front to the right as you walk in, so that is my next place to look. My kids LOVE coming here. They always look forward to finding a new book or game. Good selections all the time. Good deals... every day. My only complaint is that the stickers on many of the books tear in a nightmarish way and leave much residue on the outside cover, which.. I hate. Other than that.. LOVE THIS PLACE! read more

First of all i should start by saying I'm a huge fan of Half Price Books. The other locations I have been to have had great selections, and incredibly friendly staff. This location had none of that. They had none of the three decently well known authors i was looking for and with no computerize records (yes, apparently there is a place more low tech than my cell phone), there was no way they could tell me if they even had the books i was looking for. I will continue going to HPB but I'll never go back to this location. read more

Staff is always very friendly, but sometimes have loud conversations that make it distracting while you're trying to browse. Seem to have alot of new or like new books for more than half off. I really like that they have some parking right next to the store, so you don't always have to walk across the big parking lot. I like this location. About a hop, skip, and a jump away from my home. I like that it's small and cozy. Also, they have a great selection of newer books. However, don't go there to sell books and think you will make any money. I went in with 20 books to sell. The man in line before me couldn't decide whether to keep his books or sell them.....he wound up keeping some. Anyhow, he made $35 off of about 30 books or so. Impressive. I'm up next. I wait and wait....BANG!! $5. I took my money and left. Went and had a burger with my new found riches. Needless to say, I have to finish reading my huge pile of books and go back to HPB. Maybe I'll be able to get a candy bar off of my next venture. Seriously though, I like to just sit back and read here. read more

A few days ago I dropped off about five boxes of books we no longer use at work. I was impressed at the professionalism of the staff. Always called me SIr. And they came out to my truck and helped me with my boxes. Much appreciated as it was a hot day! They took their time in reviewing each one and then called me up and said they would pay me $220, and if that would be ok? Heck ya, it was way more then I anticipated! I was very pleased with my experience here all around. A few days later I had about three boxes of healthcare & technology textbooks and took them to the Anderson Mill location since I live close. The gentleman who assisted me was professional, but was a little condescending. When he called me up to give an estimate of what I had was worth, he said $5. He said most all would get recycled. Or he would help me box all the books back up. I asked for my boxes back and I would donate them somewhere perhaps. He did not seem to pleased. Why would you want a bunch of books that you just told me are not worth anything?? The next day I was near Parmer and Mopac and I thought I'd try that location again. For the same books they offered me $20.25! Four times the amount then the location on Anderson Mill! If you have books to sell, it would be worth the drive to go to this location. I love this place. I have always found the books I like and some, if by chance they don't have it in the store the employees look for it for you online or their other locations. They have a little bit of everything and not at all expensive. Only bad thing is that they give you very little for your stuff if you try to sell stuff to them lol read more

Few reasons I love this location. I'll start with the most obvious........if you pull in at just the right time in the evening from the Parmer entrance you can catch the firemen in an evening workout. This store seems to be a smaller version of its local HPB counterparts. The location is alright -- it's right off of Mopac in a shopping center with Fry's, Big Lots, and Taco Cabana. The selection is pretty standard stuff. I don't go to this store very often because I can usually find the oddball things I'm looking for at the Lamar location, or the 183 location. read more

I have a love/hate relationship with this bookstore chain. The hate comes from the fact they give you less then peanuts (more like peanut shells) for your trade-in books. The books are overly priced for being used and even the new ones are pricey. I love their clearance and have found some incredible deals. It is organized and clean which is more than I can say for a lot of used bookstores in the area. I wish I could pick a side to take but I can't so go judge for yourselves. read more

Super friendly and helpful staff.. I love the merchandise this place offers, both new and gently used. I've never been on the selling end to this establishment but they will also purchase items if you wanna unload some of your books/records/games, etc for a little change. I love this place. Each Half Price has a different vibe, and this one is cozier and more personal than the Lamar location. (They have framed Bootsy's Rubber Band covers in the bathrooms, y'all!) I like that they keep the magazine section organized and have current stuff--I'd rather save a tree and a couple bucks. As with any book store, I have to fight not to buy the whole store when I come in. Fortunately, that is way more affordable at Half Price than anywhere else. I have yet to see anything I thought was over-priced. Tough love for my fellow reviewers: my experience with selling my own used books in different cities is that basically nowhere would like to buy your books for what you wish they'd sell for. We live in a trash economy, and the market is flooded with gently used books. I guess my best advice would be to see what your books would go for on Half.com (no relation). Or maybe consider donating your used books to the Inside Books Project http://insidebooksproject.org/donate-books/ or starting your own little free library in your neighborhood. read more

While I am now a former employee of HalfPriceBooks, my experience with them predates my period of employment by a number of years I've had great experiences at all HPB locations, and the Parmer location is no exception. They have some of the best prices, even over Amazon and rarely more than Chegg. From textbooks to recreational reading, if they ever don't have something on their shelves, they will check other area stores as well as the national chain to see if what I need can be ordered. HPB is by far my favorite chain of physical bookstores. read more

I asked about a book and the clerk looked it up and said there was one in the San Marcus store. She said it could be transferred, so I was super excited! It was going to be a gift for a loved one. I offered to pay for it right then, but she said no need to. I gave her my name and phone number, said I would get a call. After about 3 weeks, I called and the Store Manager "Mo" simply said, can't find you in the system. I tried to ask well something happened to the book? She basically said it could have sold before they pulled it? I would think they would have some correspondence between stores, but she just said sorry its gone. I also wonder why they never called me to let me know? Super rude! My heart broke! I am leaving this as a warning to others about this place! read more
