To be honest, I don't really care for oysters, so when it was suggested that we go, I wasn't necessarily hyped about it. However, I was pleasantly surprised, and my paradigm for oysters has definitely shifted in a more positive light. That New Orleans smoked oyster is by far one of my favorite items on the menu. There's a nice Cajun seasoning with a smoked flavor. Just thinking about it makes me want one now. The other oysters were pretty good, too. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I tried the Cajun seafood pasta, and it wasn't as good as the oysters; it needed more Cajun seasoning because it almost bordered on bland. I have to say everything was a experience. The fried green tomatoes and lump crab cakes set the tone. Then the red fish entree knocked it out the park. And oh did I mention the steamed broccoli , it'll make President Bush retract his disdain for the veggie. And lastly the sweet potato boule rendered a desert unnecessary. I rarely give 5 stars to any restaurant. It's a tall order. I truly love this place. I started going there when I used to do business on the MS Gulf Coast. When they came to Flowood, I was a little disappointed at first because it was sort of a thing I did when I was down there. Now, it's still my favorite place to eat. The Orleans oysters are off the chain. I usually get the tuna, extra blackened and it never disappoints either. Sunday brunch is our favorite time to go. Wow worth the wait! Been here twice only got in once but I'm glad we waited. Both of us had the lunch portion of blackened grouper. Very nice piece of perfectly cooked fish. I had the greens and they were good and my husband had fries. And well they were fries. But the fish stood our. Our appetizer was fried crab claws. I liked them he thought they were just ok. We have been wanting to try this place and we are so disappointed. To start with when we walked into the door the hostess was rude. She then couldn't tell me how long the wait was and I had to wait for her to go find a manager to find out. When we finally got to the table we ordered a dozen charbroiled oysters. When they finally came out there was a fly that was cooked into our oysters. We called the manager over and he said " oh is that a spider" " do you want another one?" Really??? It took an hour for us to get our food and and hour to get the replacement oysters. They came out when we were done eating. On top of that they were horrible!! Last couple visits the food has been spot-on. Just a tad more server training would go a long way. Don't bring the entree while the salad plates are still on the table...stuff like that. None of the abductor muscles were cut on the oysters so instead of being able to eat them leisurely I had to stab away at each one with a tiny fork to sever the muscle be able to eat the oysters It's embarrassing that a place called the oyster house would serve 2 dozen oysters "half-shucked". I'd like to start by saying service was really good. Our party server was knowledgeable with a bubbly personality. The wait even with reservations was a bit much. The staff said 30 minutes which ended up to almost an hour. Once service started though it was efficient. Oysters were fresh and the menu featured a good bit of both surf and turf. I chose the ribeye with grits and asparagus with Gorgonzola cheese. The steak was cooked perfectly and full of flavor. The grits got hard just sitting out cooling which I feel might have been from an instant mix from a box. There was way too much cheese on the asparagus too, as there should be balance with the added cheese for a $1 extra but not drowned. The friend to my right had the seafood gumbo. The gumbo was overpowered by the soup and rice. My friend said he couldn't taste any seafood in there. The location is in a crowded strip mall so parking was a little tough. The ambiance of the place was nicely done though. Ok place but I'll look elsewhere for my next pricey meal. read more

This was my second visit to Half Shell, and it was just as good as the first. It was after 6 on a Sat and there was already a 20 min wait to be seated. The décor is a pleasant New Orleans vibe. The menu slants toward seafood but is large enough to find something else if need be. Service is very good but most surprising with a packed house was how quickly the food arrived. We started off with the Crab & Lobster dip which is incredibly rich and delicious. It comes with bread rounds that I prefer were toasted. We then had the gumbo and Half Shell salad as substitutes for one of the sides. Both were excellent. The entrees we tried were Grouper and the Grilled Seafood Sampler. The Grouper was herb and parmesan encrusted over sautéed spinach and covered in jumbo lump crab meat. It appeared to be a small piece of fish on a small plate, but it was stacked high and very filling. The side vegetables are almost large enough to share. The Seafood Sampler contained shrimp, oysters, grouper, and crab cake. The pieces were small but overall satisfying. Highly recommended and I look forward to returning. The food here was amazing. We started with The Oyster Sampler ($18) as an appetizer. Really good, but the oysters were tiny. Maybe it's the time of the year. My husband had the Seafood Pasta and it was loaded with seafood and had a fabulous sauce. He said it was the best he ever had. I had the Seafood Platter (Grilled). It was excellent. The Asparagus as my side was really good stuff as well. Our only complaint was the service. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't great either. Not what you would expect from a restaurant of this quality. Our bill for brunch for two with an appetizer and a Mimosa was $91 before tip. A little pricey, but OMG good food. read more
