She was very friendly but forgot that I ordered a crab cake. I let her know and she was like, do you still want it. Kinda awkward , so I said no. I really wanted to try it :-( Also, after I ordered my dessert which was the banana foster cheesecake she forgot that I wanted her to close and bring my check. First Course: We began with the oyster sampler featuring Charbroiled, Bienville, Orleans, and Rockefeller styles. Whats the point of making reservations if you cant accommodate? Went out with some friends last weekend and this is where we chose. I orders a dozen of the oyster and they did not disappoint. Lately oysters have been small; however, half shell oysters are still a decent size. My wife ordered the Maui and she loved it as well. I was very pleased with the food and service that was provided. The server checked on us regularly and even held convos with us. Not many places do this anymore. You can tell the waiter wanted to know about the guest he was serving. No matter what day of the week there's something going on, either Margarita specials, wine night specials, this place is awesome. First off if you're a margarita lover- this is your place. The mix is homemade, so no crappy heart burn happening here! This has been for the most part a very consistent great place for Oysters. We've had great experiences coming here except for the last time when we had a large party. Not sure if that was the reason or not. We haven't been ever since again but we'll go back soon and hopefully update the rating. Dining out on Martin Luther King day, we chose the Half Shell. My first time trying it even though we have one close to home, so my hopes were up. My sister raves and raves about it, so I was pretty excited. I came in looking for a seafood platter, but theirs doesn't come with catfish or oysters. I know, weird, especially at an oyster house...you could add oysters for $10, but I decided to skip it in favor of the recommended sandwich, The Uptowner. The kitchen was having a bad day, or something, because the sandwich came out with meat that was literally crunchy. The cheese was funky, too, and tasted like it was washed in chemicals. They were kind enough to offer to make another one, but I chose a hamburger, instead. Sigh, it was way overcooked and even tasted a little burnt. Called it a day after that, my luck was out. I did have a cup of gumbo with my sandwich, but it didn't get eaten. It wasn't very good...and that was the consensus at the table since I stopped trusting my tastebuds by this point; nobody liked it. The sweet potato soufflé thing went over well; there were three on the table to be eaten and they were. Mom got some crab claws and crab cakes and she really enjoyed them. I agree, the claws were really good...turns out I should have gone for the platter after all! Everyone really enjoyed their meal, I just had bad luck with the menu today. I don't think my experience is affecting anyone else's meal impression, so stop in and see for yourself, you're bound to find something delicious on the menu! WOW! Due to a family situation, had to cut the one night in NOLA from our summer vacation. We were looking for a taste of NOLA on our way home and Half Shell Oyster House did NOT disappoint!!! The ambiance and cleanliness of the restaurants was on point. Our server, Krystal was so (SO) good. She had such GREATcustomer service manners. Attentive and on top of our every need. Glasses were never empty and every request met with "yes, sir/ma'am". Then came the food. I can't give it enough stars. Ordered the 1lb of Argentinian Royal Reds, the voodoo boneless wings, the yellowfin tuna dip, a cup of gumbo, and a cup of bisque. The royal reds were juicy and seasoned well but were not as big as I was hoping. $30 for this was not worth it. The yellowfin tuna dip was below average - plain even - and came with saltines which was a poor choice and makes it look like they obviously cut corners. Gumbo was excellent. Good balance of rice, roux, and meat. Bisque was just below excellent, had great gulf flavor and a lighter approach (it's not a stick to your sides bisque). Voodoo Wings stole the show. I'd order them again in a heartbeat. Crisp yet juicy, sauce was unmistakably Cajun - deliciously spicy with a little tingle and warmth but never "hot". So I had to travel for work and we decided to have lunch here. The ambiance is very nice. We went relatively early so there was not a lot of ppl or noise. We asked to be seated at a table we could work at. We were accommodated. I ordered the red fish orleans (crabmeat and spiced butter and oil on top) with the boiled potatoes. The fish was good the butter/oil was too heavy for my liking but I managed. The potatoes had no Taste AT ALL. My VP ordered the red royal shrimp. No taste AT ALL. The shrimp also had to be peeled and she was not expecting that. She asked for the Orleans sauce and said that made a difference. I forgot what my other colleagues ordered for food but I think they were underwhelmed. What we were blown away by the vans foster cheese cake and the Carmel apple pie. My favorite dish to get here is the shrimp Creole - it's absolutely delicious. I usually get grits and collard greens as my sides. The collard greens are addicting! My wife enjoyed her mahi-mahi meal. Our server was excellent. I'm never going back. If you want Rose, you have to order a bottle. That's nuts. The bisque came in a very small cup, and was mediocre at best. And that's generous. The shrimp were very small and not very flavorful...what I imagine you'd get in SD, ND or a similar landlocked state. The prices were pretty much the same as far better restaurants. Great oysters. Love the Orleans style. They have a parrot fish special that was absolute perfect. I hope they bring it back. It was soooo good! Had the fried green tomatoes with crab cake. Enjoyed it. Their sweet potato brûlée is incredible. Definitely more of a dessert side. Watermelon basil martini is excellent as well. Cobia bienville was ok. First reviewed this place over 7 years ago with 5 stars! Probably ate there 40 times since with only one bad piece of fish. Went last week on a weeknight. 6:30pm and only 2 other tables. Should have been a clue. 4 of us dining and only one had a good meal. First, the tea was so weak, you could read through it. And the waitress said it was like that since lunch! (She did go make a good fresh pot!). The Caesar salad dressing was way too salty!! The steamed broccoli was too salty. Two different fish fillet dishes very over cooked. Of course the sweet potato crème brûlée was awesome. The manager (via the waitress) first offered one piece of dessert for the whole table. . Then the manager came out. She agreed the fish looked like jerky. She then offered "future" meal comps. We declined! She then comped the evening. Not a place I'll return to very soon. So disappointed, as I use to really enjoy eating there. Hopefully it was just a "bad" chef night. read more
