As I explore the Capital region I have driven by Halfmoon Diner many times. Always telling myself I will stop. I wanted breakfast and was willing to go anywhere. Looked up on google Best breakfast in Capital Region. Halfmoon Diner was in one of the first articles I read from alloveralbany.com. I am book marking that site and trying more listed. I had eggs Benedict Florentine. Yumm. Feta cheese, spinach, English muffins, hollandaise Sauce. The homefries were sliced potatoes with onion and NOT greasy. Including coffee and a 2 ounce of juice. Like a combo meal. $11.32. Very reasonable. Oh yeah, I had a side of hollandaise sauce. I just love that stuff. The diner appears to be very clean. read more

I have to split this review because the food was excellent and the waitstaff was outstanding but before I could experience any of that the very disrespectful older man at the door ruined the experience me. if I hadn't agreed to meet friends here I would've left. I purposely came early because it was a late breakfast on a Sunday so I expected it to be crowded which it was. at any other restaurant I'd show up early, get on the list and get a table in time for my friends to arrive. NOT HERE, my number was called and then i was very rudely told that he refused to seat me until everybody arrived because they do t let you arrive early at the Halfmoon Diner. I wasn't the only customer upset about this imaginary rule as there's no signage that lets you know this rule 2 other customers left because of this and being skipped on the list because you were awaiting part of your party. Finally gave this place a try on a Sunday morning for breakfast. It's a popular place, so I would advise arriving early, or being okay with a wait. The wait is worth it, though I took a counter seat to allow larger parties at the tables. Had a great, attentive waitress who knew her regulars, and got to read my book and eat my breakfast. Everything was tasty, coffee was plentiful, and I didn't feel rushed. One thing I definitely have to applaud them for, they are a well-oiled machine - no flustered waiststaff, everyone calm and focused on getting folks seated, orders taken, and ensuring they were checked on often enough, but not too often that they felt rushed. From the counter, I saw that they are well-used to a line thirty people deep when all the tables are full, and it didn't seem anyone was neglected in the bustle. read more

So the experience here has not been great. Unfortunately it could have been so much better. I started off with high hopes and ended watching my wife eat her breakfast. I had a cup of coffee and it took almost 10 mins before someone actually came back to ask us if we would like to have more coffee this is a problem to me because I love my coffee. When we received our food it was 5 minutes after we ordered it which made me think we may have a problem in the first place but the corn beef hash was covered by the eggs and it was not until I took my first bite that I knew something was wrong. The hash was burnt like it was scrapped off the bottom off the pan and served to me to eat it was a real turn off and very sad because I live hash and it was disappointing. I believe that they can do much better than this because they were very busy today and you do not get this busy and stay open this long with service like I received but that is why I put it at 3 stars. It's a pretty authentic class diner experience here - working juke boxes for each table, huge menus with copious amounts of options (breakfast all day), and older waitresses that aren't afraid of going heavy with the makeup (lol). The price is honestly so great for the amount of food you're getting - I ordered the tuna melt and it came presented as two open-face sandwiches. Needless to say, I was set on tuna for a while. I also ordered a side of mac and cheese, and the portion was very decently sized. You could have argued that it was enough to be an entree. read more

Every time I have eaten here the food is by far better than any diner food I have ever tried. The staff is friendly and food comes out quickly. When my son turned nine he wanted to go here for his birthday dinner. I was a little surprised but I know he loves the Belgium waffles. First of all we got bad vibes the second we walked in, the man at the hostess station was ordering my mom around when she was asking where she puts her name in. We get seated & order. The food comes out and the waitress crushed my moms poached egg by putting my plate on top of it which then caused the english muffin to become soggy. When my mom said it looked disgusting she caused a fit by giving attitude an saying well i'll take it off, then proceeded to walk away and give us a nasty ook. My husband and I tried this little dinner for breakfast on morning and wasn't too pleased about it, so we decided to do lunch today. He had the Cheeseburger deluxe which was over cooked & dry. However, the fries were good. I had the Chef salad, supposed to have Ice Berge lettuce but it was mostly green tree lettuce. Don't know it was call but I didn't like it. So, I have been here twice. Dragged here by people I once thought I could call my friends. The first time wasn't so bad. We grabbed lunch. I got a bacon cheeseburger. Nothing fancy. I asked for medium-rare, but that cow was well done. Really not an uncommon find in many restaurants these days. I'm about 90% positive that the French fries they use are those generic "meh, I'm drunk, but I bet these will taste really awesome later if I pour half of this salt and slather ketchup all up in them at 3AM" frozen brand you could pick up at Stop & Shop or Price Chopper. Good thing I was kind of hungover because at that moment in time all I could think was "GREASE IS GOOD FOR ME RIGHT NOW." A boring, blah, I just need something to hold me over and this will suffice type of experience. This happens with diners and so I didn't think much else about it. Until I had brunch there this past Saturday. I want to start the brunch portion of this review by saying: BOO. BOOOO. BOOOOOO. I love bacon. Who doesn't love bacon? Some vegetarian burn out probably, but I'm not one of those, so listen up: the bacon sucks. It's awful. Do not waste your time. Do not waste your hard earned money. Or if you are a trust fund baby, majoring in the fine arts, don't waste your parents money or disappoint them anymore than you already have by ordering the bacon here. OKAY!? Why does it suck? Because it's NOT bacon. It's bulldonkie, that's what it is, and so I recommend they make that correction on their menu. IT WAS MICROWAVEABLE BACON. What a crime! Is that allowed? Is this an upstate NY thing no one told me about!? You know the kind I am talking about: it looks like pinkish/brown strips rubbed up with vaseline. I ordered the Belgian waffle. What about that? Bisquick mix. That's what it reminded me of. I'm sure it would have tasted better with the blueberries I had asked for, but the waitress didn't write that down and would take off as soon as she stopped by to check on our table. I had no opening! A poo poo on the service. The syrup was Smucker's pancake syrup and so that was disappointing, but come on, from what you have read so far, how could you expect for me to surprisingly start praising something random like, "OH BUT DON'T WORRY THEY SURE DO HAVE GREAT MAPLE SYRUP!" I was born and raised in New England. It's a sin to eat that fake syrup and I will never tell the Reverend at my mother's church that it happened because I don't think there are enough Hail Mary's or Our Father's I could say that would grant me repentance. Stopped here while visiting the historical Saratoga Springs for the Dave Matthews concert Weekend at SPAC. This diner failed to meet expectations on all levels. First off, any diner that is HALF EMPTY at 930am on a saturday morning should be a HUGE red flag: Danger! Danger! The waitress was more interested in her hot pink iphone than the customers. We placed orders for juice and coffee and waited atleast 10 minutes. Coffee was luke warm, juice glasses were dingy and half filled! What?! Food arrived and it was low quality, luke warm and just non-appealing to the human eye. I ordered pancakes with a side of bacon. The pancakes were small (about the size of a cd) and undercooked. The bacon was disgusting, translucent and grease. Think hospital cafeteria style. Eggs were chewy and had a funky taste to them. Almost tasted raw!! We ate our meals and almost fell out of our chair when the billed arrived. 86 dollars for breakfast for 5 adults and a 6 year old??! Whaaat?! Excuse me? We were charged 3.49 each for the juices. Our coffees never got refilled and the ketchup bottle was empty. What a horrible experience! Avoid this place! Horrible food, sub par service and outrageous prices. Highway robbery! I do not mind spending good money for good food / service. We were less than pleased and WOULD NEVER recommend this place to anyone. Skip this place! I'm a New York City bred girl, and born and raised on Long Island. I think I know my diners. This one however, is one of the saddest excuses I've ever come across. Upstate New Yorkers need to experience some better dinning, what people find good in this part of the state leaves me dumbfounded...utterly dumbfounded. Firstly, what diner isn't opened past 10pm, let alone 12am? Apparently Halfmoon Diner. I figured out that the owner was Greek and was thoroughly excited, most Greek owned Diners rock. Well, here are the cold hard facts: 1.) Menu is too large and the wait time is ridiculous 2.) Waitresses are not properly trained or clothed 3.) Food is under seasoned and lifeless, ethnic dishes are unpalatable. Let's face it, when I can taste the "canned" flavor in my food, I've got a serious issue. I ordered a stuffed fillet of flounder with crab and received more canned filler then anything else. The Flounder was over-cooked and falling apart, and the crab stuffing wasn't even hot, it was lukewarm at best. My baked potato was almost raw, and the vegetables were dull, under seasoned, and lifeless. These are the only words that I can think of to describe this gruel they call food. I like being checked on during my meal because it makes me feel as if the waitress cares about my experience. I however do not like being checked on every 25 seconds. If I have two full glasses of water and a full plate of food, I'm pretty sure everything is okay. Maybe it's because every time I've ever come here the place was dead, except for the senior crowd. The food portion is good, but I would rather spend an extra couple dollars for food that has taste, texture, and body then under seasoned, canned food. To me, that's just a slap in the face. The perky waitress was very good and service was quick. @945 they started to close and turn off the lights. When we went to the counter to pay the foreign born owner/manager was in the kitchen. When he came out with a plate of food for himself he did not speak a word to us just picked up my card and check. He then started talking to the people behind waiting to pay. I signed the check and he never said a word to me. Nothing I hate more than non Americans not speaking to me when I spend money in their business. Yes the food was good and service was quick. This place is just bad. The management is mean and the food is flavorless. I've marveled at the number of cars crammed into the parking lot every Sunday. I took that and the, not effusive, but positive, reviews on Yelp to think the place could at least pump out a good breakfast. Upon arrival I should have convinced my party to bail. The mean girl behind the counter. Mean. The intense manager (I assume owner) cramming people into seating with zero regard for the customer. We were barked at to follow him after being barked at about the number in our party. As my 87 year old mother, attached to the arm of my husband limped through the restaurant he pointed to a table in the back section, left the menus on the table and began barking at the hardworking, tireless waitstaff. Thank God we had Deborah as server. She zoomed around our section balancing several glasses and plates throughout our stay. I hope she can find a job at a place where she is respected and the food is edible. Honestly all the server and bus staffers were running like crazy. Feeling bad for them and respecting how hard they worked is the reason for the second star of this review. The manager/owner was omnipresent- watching them and praying we'd all eat quickly so he could fill our tables again. He counted the tables in our section at least three times during our stay. The menu is over ten pages and they offer everything you can conceive. We all chose breakfast items and my mom's Belgian waffle was the only item that received positive reviews. My eggs Benedict was served on stale English muffins with a yellow sauce that should never be called Hollandaise. My husband's Monte Cristo was two burnt pieces of French toast covered with a slice of deli ham and turkey and the saddest squares of gooey white stuff melted on top. We assumed they were meant to pass as cheese. The food was uninspiring, unappetizing and most definitive unsatisfying. We couldn't get out of there fast enough. Faced the mean girl to cash out who seemed very annoyed when she asked how our meal was, and I answered that the service was great. Mean, but smart enough to understand I was not about to praise the food. Still feel dirty having been fooled into eating there. My own fault- but a mistake I do not intend to relive. Not bad for a local diner. There are no decent brunch spots on the Clifton Park- Halfmoon are so this place is usually a good destination for a quick breakfast. They usually get people in and out pretty quickly so the wait time during weekend mornings isn't too bad. I used to be a huge fan of their Eggs Benedict, however the quality has gone down in recent years. I'm not sure if the chef has changed but it just tastes like uncooked eggs doused in too much hollaindaise sauce. They refill coffee pretty generously, and if you ask specifically you can usually get French Vanilla coffee. I usually forget to ask for it until after they poured their regular brew. read more

I've patronized the Halfmoon Diner a handful of times, and if I averaged my experiences I would say that I am indifferent about this place. This diner knows how to make a decent sandwich or wrap, but then again those items are difficult to blunder. However, I will say that the Circle Diner in Latham makes a French Dip that is leagues ahead. I'm not particularly a fan of their fries as they are blatantly the crinkle-cut ones you'd buy from the grocery store. Their taste and texture make it evident that they were frozen before cooked. One time I tried their cornish game hen special, and I was not impressed. When the menu said it was served with a fruit sauce, I thought it might be a plum drizzle that didn't overpower the chicken. Unfortunately, it was literally chopped fruit that both covered and was stuffed inside this hen, and it tasted horrid. Overall, this is a run-of-the-mill establishment, but it cannot call itself a legitimate diner. I'd rather drive the extra 20 miles round trip to the Circle Diner in Latham, because there the food would be better and the prices the same. TL;DR -- The Halfmoon Diner is forgettable at best for its mediocre fare and shortcuts taken. read more

We stopped here this morning because Cracker Barrel was too full. When we pulled in their lot was packed. We had to wait for someone to leave to get a spot. Once inside there was one open booth and we got it. The waitress came over immediately and took our drink order. There is a big menu, if you have an idea of what you want, all you have to do is go right to that section. Big variety! We ordered our food and it was out within 10 minutes. I could not believe it was that fast because of the sheer number of people there. The portions were more than I could eat and it was piping hot. This was our first time there and it was an excellent experience. I have read all of the negative reviews, maybe we were there at an odd time (9:30)) and caught them at their best. All I know is I would drive from Saratoga to eat here again. To top it off our waitress was outstanding and I noted that to the manager. When we left the lobby was full of people waiting to be seated. They must be doing something right!! read more

Came here for breakfast with my parents. It was busy when we arrived but we had no problem getting a table. My parents ordered eggs with bacon and eggs with sausage. Both meals came with a cute little glass of juice, home fries, coffee, and toast. The sausage was not your typical small breakfast sausage. It was thick links which my dad enjoyed. They also both said the home fries were fresh and had flavor. I got the creme cheese and chive omelet, which also came with coffee, juice, toast, and home fries. It was packed with creme cheese! I ordered grilled tomatoes as a side instead of home fries which paired nicely with my omelet. (There are home fries substitutes for those who want something different). Our waitress was very attentive and had the coffee flowing. Prices were reasonable as well. My only complaint was the rye bread was tough. read more

I visit friends and family in the Capital District a few times a year and find myself meeting them for a meal at diners all over the area. Of all of the diners this is close to my favorite one. The service, the quality of food and the cleanliness is one of the best. Very busy intersection though so be careful getting in and out of the parking lot. read more

We went to the Halfmoon Diner Saturday I night our waitress for terrible. She messed up the order, served chicken teriyaki instead of chicken souvlaki. She said she'd have it put in a pita pocket and we told her that was unacceptable. She did it anyway. . She forgot what my husband ordered so it took forever to get our food. We go here almost every time we travel to Guptill's Roller Skating Arena. We've tried a large selection of items off of their menu and every thing has always been wonderful. They have very good prices and you get a great meal. Depending on what you order you can get a pretty large portion. We always get mozzarella sticks to share along with our entrees and sometimes it even takes us a while to recover before we can skate. read more

First the waitress asked what the adults wanted and not the children, then she would not accept the order from my six year, she handed me a plate that was entirely to hot to hand someone, the drinks were all given to the wrong people and spilled all over the table, as she walked by we asked several times for napkins and she ignored us so I asked another waitress, that waitress was not happy to be asked and went and told the waitress to get it for us, I then asked several times for a coffee and she ignored all of us on several passes by, I asked another waitress that decided to go get a pot of coffee and ask everyone around us if they wanted any coffee and ignored us. When I asked for a manger that was the same memorable experience so it can just imagine what happens in the kitchen....not a choice we will make again!! read more

Mediocrity was born at the Half-moon Diner. The diner located on rt 9 seems like it has not been updated since the 70s. The menus are six pages long and twenty pounds of nonsense. We ordered simple breakfast items from our waitress who was a good definition of curmudgeon, only ruder. The food was almost as good as the service. The entertainment came in listening the wait staff talk to regulars about problems ranging from their children to their ailments. Nothing better than that to wash down your lame meal. We won't be back, and hopefully someone who cares can one day own this diner and make it worthwhile. read more

We have been here on many occasions but our last visit prompted a review. We stopped for breakfast at 9:00 on a Saturday morning. The place was busy but we were seated right away. After about five minutes the hostess came to our table and asked if we would like coffee. About a minute after that, the waitress finally came over. We understand that she was busy but it was highly unusual to have to wait over five minutes to be acknowledged. Our order was simple...two #3 breakfast specials (scrambled) with bacon, wheat toast and orange juice. Surprisingly, our food was delivered VERY quickly but the quality of the food was poor. The home fries tasted like they had been sitting for a while and were either reheated or kept mildly warm. The bacon was undercooked (not far from being inedible). The waitress never stopped by the table to check and see how we were doing or if we needed anything else. We got coffee refills from another waitress who was walking by and asked us if we wanted more. The only other time we saw our waitress was when she practically ran past our table, dropping the check in her wake. She earned the nickname "The Tasmanian Devil" because she was practically a blur as she passed. We will give it one more try but unfortunately the quality of both the food and service at Halfmoon Diner is not what it used to be. read more
