Picture this: it's 6 weeks before you're wedding, and you feel pretty prepared. Venue, check. Food, check. Booze, check. Suit, check....or so you thought. Your fiancé tells you out of nowhere, "I don't really like the color of the suit you're getting anymore." Confidence in your look for the big day? Shattered, and you are left scrambling in the rubble trying to find anything to fit the new vision in your significant other's mind. No off-the-rack place seems to have the look, and you turn to custom suiting as a last ditch effort. A "Best custom suits in Chicago" Google search provides you with options, with one consistent name on the myriad of lists you see, Hall Madden. You send an email, half expecting to be turned down, seeing as a custom suit in a 6 week time frame is monumental, but to your delight, there is light at the end of the tunnel, as a friendly Kiyoshi replies, "we can do it." Ecstatic because of the too-good-to-be-true news, you can't help but wonder, what's the catch? It's probably going to be very expensive, especially given my situation. Let me just say, this was not the case at all, and Kiyoshi was as friendly, professional, and honest in person as he was in that email. From the first conversation, Kiyoshi was ready to get things rolling, and asked me questions about the look I was trying to achieve. He not only offered me my options and provided insight on each, but also provided me with helpful advice and knowledge on questions I had about the process and the suit/tuxedo (ended up going with a tux). After this first meeting, I decided to go all in on Hall Madden, and he got to work. The fitting was first, and Kiyoshi demonstrated his expertise right off the bat by not only showing me the different places that he was going to have altered to fit my physique, but also explained why off-the-rack suits fit me the way they did. I even learned that I naturally have my right shoulder lower than my left due to me being right-handed, which I never knew! Aftet the fitting, I got a chance to pick out everything about my tux, from the outer color and inner lining color (obviously, since my fiancé needed to put her stamp of approval), to the lapels, to the color of the jetted pockets (I even chose to have it monogrammed to boot). Feeling once again confident, I waited anxiously for the suit to come in, and in 4 weeks it did. For the final fitting, some small alterations were still needed, but got done quickly and in time for the wedding. The end result was stunning. The final Burgundy tuxedo with black satin lapels was one worthy of being next to my beautiful wife's ivory A-line wedding dress with lace details. I walked down the aisle with her, arm in arm and my head held high, as I knew I looked damn good. Of course, the compliments came as is probably customary to do on someone's wedding day, but something tells me these were genuine. To sum, my wedding day would not have been as special had Hall Madden not been a part of it. My experience with Hall Madden was nothing short of excellent. I was in the market for a custom tux for my wedding and came across Hall Madden on Reddit. They had great reviews so I decided to give them a try over other providers like Suitsupply (which I have used before, wasn't a bad experience but definitely wasn't anything that would make me need to go back there). Kiyoshi is the tailor at Hall Madden and he does a tremendous job. He is located in an office in the loop right on Michigan Avenue that is very easy to get to (and has an amazing view of the lake). You schedule your appointment with Hall Madden online and Kiyoshi responds to confirm. I had several appointments with Kiyoshi, starting with the initial consultation to see if Hall Madden would be a good fit for what I'm looking for. Kiyoshi asked me what I had in mind and didn't push or pressure me into anything and was happy to provide his vast amount of knowledge wherever I needed some advice. After deciding on a custom tux at the initial meeting, the next visit was to get sized and pick out all of the smaller details like interior lining on the vest and inside pocket fabric for the jacket. Then the most amazing part about Hall Madden is that they send a custom test suit to see how everything looks before they make the actual suit. This was very helpful in my case as a few items needed adjusting and Kiyoshi was very attentive and detailed oriented while marking down these adjustments. On the final visit, my tux was ready and my bride to be and I were over the moon about it. It was ready well in advance of the big day, and that definitely helped ease our minds on that front. I wanted to get a new suit and shirts for upcoming interviews and found these guys were close by and decided to give them a try.  I've had suits in the past but this was my first time getting something custom made and I wasn't sure what to expect. I had to book an appointment thru their website and put down a deposit. Most tailors I'd used for alterations in the past were old and grumpy and I hated dealing with pushy salespeople in department stores, so I wasn't sure what it'd be like going in to have a suit made.  First off, the studio space they have isn't like a normal shop. It's an intimate office in a suite with three open air balconies overlooking the city. The view is unbelievable.  The fitting though was a breeze. I met with Kiyoshi who started by doing measurements and putting me in example suits to get the size right. He mentioned all sorts of things I'd never considered before when buying a suit, like my shoulder slope and how high the front button is on the jacket.  Then we went over fabrics, which was a bit overwhelming but he told me his recommendations for what fabric would work in an office setting and for my complexion without being too boring or obnoxious. I ended up picking a grey suit with some texture in it. You also get to pick things like your buttons and liner and monogram.  The whole process took about an hour. The hardest part was honestly waiting 6 weeks until the suit arrived. I thought it looked great and better than what I'd worn before, but Kiyoshi insisted on making a few tweaks to the pants, which they did for free.  Overall, it was a relaxing experience and I've already recommended them to a few friends. What an amazing experience! After so many years, I had almost given up on having a suit that really fit. It didn't seem to matter how much I spent. What you don't get: the obscene price tags found in Barney's, Bergdoff Goodman or any other overpriced store that prevents 28 year olds like myself for looking my best when I'm at my best. The value they provide is so good that I already have a tux, 2 suits (one a 3-piece) and a blazer in my closet from them and the only reason I don't have more is because my closet space is eclipsing my wife's. Richard is the co-founder, owner, and now, my tailor. From my first fitting to my last, it's always about making me look my best without any of the fussiness found elsewhere in the industry. The options are endless (from great quality $700 made-to-measure, full canvas suits to top-quality Zegna fabric at half the price) and the best part is these guys know the line between being too trendy (you won't find skinny suits here) but keeping classic style relevant (the cut of their 2-button, double vent suit makes you feel like Bond). As a professional photographer, I'm constantly going to weddings and needed a new suit that looked professional and modern. After searching around, I decided to try Hall Madden and I'm really glad I chose them. I hate to just pile on the praise, but I could literally not be happier with my experience at Proper Suit. I have suits from other custom clothiers as well as high-end off the rack suppliers. I can say with certainty that none of them fit as well or come with the level of customer service as my new Proper Suit does. Richard and Kiyoshi have an excellent grasp on how a modern suit should look and feel, particularly when it comes to fit. What can I say? These guys are the best. Over the last few years, I've had a suit and a tux made by them. Both times, they nailed the fit and details off the bat. The process was so easy too. I happen to be someone who is pretty particular about his clothes and knew exactly what I wanted when I walked in, but I'd imagine the experience would be equally easy for a novice. I was trying to find a MTM store in Chicago, so I bought two suites with two different vendors. Vendor 1 charged me $1K more than Proper Suit. The sales approach at Vendor 1 was a bit more sales oriented versus consultation. I got my suit in 6 weeks. The sports coat is nice but the pants come up on my waist way too high for my liking. I have worn the sports coat with the slacks three times in six months and wish I never bought it. Proper Suit was different. I ordered a suit and it took forever. When it came it needed some alterations and then everything went wrong. The pants came back way too tight. BUT Richard did jump on it. He scrapped the first suit and ordered a new one. It seems to have taken forever (I first ordered in January and received the final suit in August) but when it arrived it wore beautifully on my body. I have re-ordered a sports coast and several trousers with Proper Suit. Given their price point and willingness to stick with it until everything is to my liking, I have to give them high marks. read more

Just finished ordering my fourth suit/blazer there and plan on continuing to go to them in the future. Their responsiveness and commitment to service are terrific - very patient and excellent attention to the details of fitting (in particular I've worked Kiyoshi in Chicago the last few times, and he is terrific).
