I was at Hall recently, and this place was just amazing! It is a bit difficult to find, but it is more than worth it. You have to have advance reservations also. We had a slight mixup with our reservation, but the Hall staff handled it with aplomb, and we were on our way. The tour starts in a beautiful reception center with stunning views of Napa Valley and an awesome patio. We were given pours of their 2010 sauvignon blanc, which was delicious. We were then given pours of the 2008 cabernet, which was outstanding as well. (We left with some of both.) We walked through the winemaking facility and then among the grapes just a bit as we were told of the Halls' processes and philosophy. Then we entered the cave, which must be seen to be believed. The Halls are avid collectors of art, and the cave (and really, the entire property) is testament to that. My girlfriend's dad is a sculptor who has a piece in the cave, and getting to see his piece in that setting was pretty neat too. At the end of the cave is a dining room with a 30-or-so person table sitting under a truly remarkable chandelier designed after the roots of a grapevine draped in Swarovski crystals. My group left with about 4 cases of wine. Hall Rutherford is a must-see winery with fantastic wines, an amazing setting, and excellent staff. read more

This Hall winery is by appointment only vs their St. Helena location. I was recommended by my cousin and I'm super glad we came as I really enjoyed visiting here and fell in love with their artisan wine collection. The location was a little hard to find even with my GPS. You go up the same road as if going to Auberge du Soleil, but then you need to make a left turn onto a residential road and it's quite the drive up. Once you're on Auberge Road, you can't miss it as it's pretty much at the end of the road. It is gated that you have to dial in. Once we walked in, the sommelier/hostess of our tour greeted us and served us a tasting of their Sauvignon Blanc, while we waited for others to arrive. The inside of this building was as if we walked into someone's house. Loved their modern collection of art, furniture, and home decor. I wanted it all for my own house! Best part....My jaws dropped when I saw the view of Napa Valley from their huge glass window. It was breathtaking!! They also had an outdoor patio area, which would be perfect place to host a summer party. I immediately wondered if they rented the place out for parties. Our tour happened to only consist of 6 people, which was nice. We got a tour of their vineyards, tanks, machinery, and caves. It was interesting to hear about the history of the Halls' and their love for art. Even in the caves, they had various art placed around the brick walls. Reminded me of the caves I visited in Pommery in Epernay, France. It was also nice to know that they're doing everything they can to be environmentally friendly. At the end of the cave was this BEAUTIFUL dimmed room with Austrian crystals hanging off tree roots (made by resin)! I was in awe again. In the room was a beautiful long dark wooden table for about 20 people. (The vision of having a party there again arose to my mind). There we had 4 tastings. My favorites were the Bergfield St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon and Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. I'm definitely considering in signing up for their Wine Club. read more

I don't get out for much wine tasting anymore but when I have guests in town, this is someplace we don't miss! You must make an appointment but it is absolutely worth the additional planning. I loved everything about this winery. My husband and I had reservation for a 10 am tour. The drive up is a bit tricky but not bad at all. You have to use the call box to be buzzed into the property. It's an amazing view once you get in. The owners are big art collectors, so there is art pieces everywhere you look. The cave and the crystal chandelier will take your breathe away. Simply beautiful. A tour of Hall Rutherford used to be a complimentary part of wine club memberships at Hall. Two free tickets for primary colors members, and unlimited visits for collections members. As it's less convenient to visit than the St. Helena tasting room, we have only been a handful of times over the course of our membership. I just called today to book a tour and tasting for a special visit with my father, and come to find out, what used to be included in our membership now costs $100 per person. And the rep on the phone even had the nerve to tell me that it was a 'discounted price' from the $125 per person for non members. Am I supposed to be excited about that? The customer service at Hall has tanked since they expanded their operations. I no longer feel like my membership is valued, and the revolving door of newbie, poorly trained staff sours the experience. The number of frustrating experiences with this winery is ever increasing. When we first joined Hall it was still a quaint operation, where everyone knew your name when you came in the door of the tasting room, and you felt like a member of the Hall family. Now, each time we visit, it's new faces, and Hall feels like a cold gigantic corporation that's looking to just drain as much money from my pocket as they can. Starting to look for greener pastures. Hall used to cater to wine aficionados. Now it looks like they cater to nouveau riche and have forgotten those who've been around since long before the big new fancy building. read more

I was very excited to try Hall Wines after reading the reviews and recent press. I made an appointment for 3pm on Sunday. When we walked in I was greeted with "we have no tasting this afternoon". When I assured the rude young lady that I indeed had an appointment she stated "Do you have a confirmation email?" Once I produced the confirmation she stated they had no records of it and we could not taste today. I have never been treated so poorly at a winery in Napa! Please avoid this winery and try one of the other hundreds of welcoming amazing wine makers in the valley. read more

I first visited Hall Rutherford with my girlfriend nearly three years ago on our second date. I came back a second time this last weekend to propose to her while we toured napa. When I told Hall my intentions, they recommended their "private wine experience," where we could do a tour with just the two of us. Others here have talked up the gorgeous cave, the crystal chandelier, the art, and the location overlooking the valley. We have been to a lot of vineyards over the last few years, and this is easily one of our favorites. We will be back again not only because of the good wine and cool atmosphere but because of their fantastic service. Every step from email check ins through the tasting went above my expectations. Our guide claimed he hadn't been involved in a proposal before (outside his own) but that was not at all apparent as I imagine his own proposal to his own wife was pulled off with style. I had high hopes for HALL Rutherford from the Yelp reviews and recommendations I received from friends, but my experience with them left me disappointed. I do have to say that they did a beautiful job with the presentation, and that they do make some fine wines. I had not experienced their wine, and I do have to say that it was great. The presentation was great, I loved the tasting room and the other couple that was with us. It seems like the winery really paid impeccable attention to detail, that is all except for the customer service experience. When we had completed our wine tasting, we had purchased ~$500 dollars worth of wine and joined their wine club. We spoke to them about shipping options as we would be out of town, and we wanted to either pick it up that day or have it held at the fedex shipping facility. Our guide told us she would take care of everything and that it would be no problem. In addition, to verbal instructions, I wrote down the special instructions as instructed on the order form (where they have an area for special instructions/comments!). Well to say the least, shipping ended up being a DISASTER! I ended up spending my day off between the end of vacation and a flight for a job interview chasing down my wine shipment In addition to multiple phone calls, I spent 3 hours driving around trying to track down my wine shipment, so it would not be mailed back. When I contacted my guide/contact person, I did not even get an apology from them, I got a "Thank you, we'll look into it". Instead of getting any follow up, I ended up getting a bill for a second shipment (the first of my wine club shipment, that was suppose to start 3 months from now from what we were told). I e-mailed them again regarding the lack of follow up, what we were told in regards to shipment, and my intention to cancel my wine club membership because they could not do the bare minimum of at least apologizing for the inconvenience caused by not just once, but twice messing up my order instructions. I guess that spending several hundred dollars, cannot even buy you a half hearted apology from HALL Rutherford. Sadly, I had looked forward to opening their wine for special occasions i.e. my first wedding anniversary, our first home together, our first child, etc. and reminiscing about our great time traveling in Sonoma/Napa. This however will not be the case, the wine has sadly been bittered by a staff that clearly showed to me their lack of customer service, and more important basic manners. The Halls seem like great people, I wonder what they think of their customers being treated like this, perhaps I don't matter unless I buy thousands of dollars of wine... read more

Honestly, this review is solely based on experience, not their wine. We walked into the tasting room and chose spots at the main tasting room bar. We stood there for 10-15 minutes while the guy behind the wine bar walked by us 2-3 times. Finally his very friendly coworker noticed us and said that the other guy would be right with us...to which we were bummed. Finally the "other guy" came over- sort of did a hello and told us he would pour us a Pinot noir...but the tasting room was such a sh%* show that he walked away from us twice to manage where guests were supposed to be stationed...we still hadn't received a pour. We had already been to such amazing wineries that day, we were not going to deal with it, so we walked out. Totally garbage service and $50 for a tasting- that's what the premier wineries charge for a personal experience! beautiful grounds...but there's sooo much better to experience. I'm withholding names to be at least a bit kind here, as i hate to leave a poor review. read more

Really great winery...great views, relaxed setting, and of course, great wine! We arrived a few minutes early and was surprised to be handed a glass of Sauv Blanc before we could even get in the door. Left to roam around with artwork and outside on the balconies...very nice view of the Valley. I was a little nervous that it might be pretentious but it wasn't at all - great winery! Short tour (which is good when you've been on as many as we have) but informative. Interesting history of the place and the wines. The tasting at the end was awesome. Great wines and very friendly host...the wines are a little pricey - but it is Napa Cab, right? Gorgeous cave room where they pour the tastings. No hard sell and not rushed out - I can't ask for much more. We were very happy with our experience here....tasted a sauv blanc, rose, merlot, and 3 excellent cabs. They also have a Syrah (which we bought to sample later). read more

From the drive up the hill through beautiful scenery, to the arrival at the gate, to the beautiful furnishings and artwork that look like you have arrived in someone's modern-inspired home, to the friendly tour guide who obviously loves where he works, to the breathtaking cave and tasting room, to the deep and flavorful expensive wines we got to try, we had a wonderful experience. Simply put: AMAZING WINES. My wife and I had a friend make us an appointment. We pulled up into the gorgeous hills and into the private estate and were stunned by the beauty and serenity. Truly different than Inglenook or any of the 29 valley floor winery's. Andrea was a wonderful host and we had a wonderful greeting with a couple glasses of their outstanding SavBlanc. The cave tour is simply mind blowing. The Hall's truly have a gem of a place. We feel so fortunate that they are willing to share such exquisite beauty and art with commoners like us. The Jacks Masterpiece CabSav is simply stunning. Their Pinot Noir is great and the other rare Cab we tried was lights out. If I had access to these wines I could easily drinks bottle a day. Do yourself a favor. If you can get in, do it! Also consider becoming a wine club member! Savor the tastes of Napa's best throughout the year! read more

A favorite place to drink wine. The tour starts with a view overlooking Napa valley.. There is art work every where even in the room where the wine tanks stand and the wine barrels sit. The barrel tasting that I received was one of the best wine that I has on my 5 day visit to Napa. And it not due to be bottled until next year. But what made this my most memorable winery visit it the tasting room. The huge table made you feel like a visit to a dinner party. There was water, cheese, and salami to go with 3 wines. From all the vineyards we visited, this was my absolute favourite. It's by appointment only, so make sure to call in advance. The tour starts at the main building, in which your tour guide will poor you a glass of wine while you look over the vineyard and enjoy the art work that surrounds the whole vineyard. The real tour starts once you enter the caves. Inside the caves, you get to taste some wine directly from the barrel. What's most impressive was how intimate the whole experience was. The tour ends at the far end of the cave in a beautiful room that's complimented with a dazzling crystal chandelier. read more

There are two wineries! Make sure you go to the right winery. This one is in Rutherford and the other one is in St Helena. The address on yelp says "auberge road, St. Helena", so I assumed I was going to the St. Helena winery but instead ended up at the Rutherford winery. Lost our spot in the tour and ended up paying for the whole thing. The winery itself is good but they need to be clear about the location of the winery. Even though they are 15 minutes apart, it is frustrating! read more

The only problem with visiting Hall Rutherford, was that every winery after that compared to our tour here. My husband and I joked about naming our next dog Hall or Howell from how much he enjoyed our experience here. It is worth noting that in addition to the beautiful wines and stunning location, the completely random company you are paired with on a tour and the host makes or breaks your experience. Rob, was our host, and did an impeccable job. His wealth of information, history, knowledge of the family, poise, and humor made you want to do whatever it takes to extend the 90 minute tour into hours and hours of his company and conversation. Beyond thrilled we got an opportunity to go. Sadly, we live in a state with weird shipping laws so we were only limited to taking one bottle home with us. Simply put, the wines are amazing, the tour amazing, the small bites amazing, the views and artwork amazing... Make an appointment ahead of time. Expect an intimate and informative tour, very small group and a spectacular tasting. Hall Rutherfood was quite possibly my favorite wine tour. We went with wine club members otherwise tours are $60pp. You get buzzed in at the gate. On the way to the tasting room, we learned about how all the materials were shipped from Austria and the engineering involved in the architecture. We were also able to do a barrel tasting. Wines are of course young and I'm not used to that taste so I can't tell if they're actually good or not. But the tour was informative and our guide was friendly. And I just fell in LOVE with the tasting cave with the chandelier adorned with Swarovski crystals that looks like an upside down tree. (If you're at Sacramento airport, the artist has a similar but much less grand installation there.) They considered Chihuli, but decided on this artist. The tour culminated with good wines and some food to complement it. I regret not buying any bottles here. I'll just have to come back :) read more

HALL Rutherford is a member of Gems of the Valley, an exclusive wine membership club of nine prestigious wineries in the Napa Valley. Truly an amazing estate, with views overlooking the valley floor, fine art sprawled all across the winery and its caves. We enjoyed a great tour, starting with some background on Craig and Kathryn Hall (she was ambassador to Austria under Bill Clinton), education of the grapes and vines, and finishing with a barrel tasting and additional wines in the caves and tasting room attached. Wines were OK but their customer service did not even deserve half a star!! All they want to do is to trick you into becoming a member. Once you are in, you are a piece of trash. They messed up our shipping twice and no apology!! The next respond we got was "your next wine order has shipped". BAD BAD BAD customer services. People who work there seemed nice at first but just didn't know how to do their job. They might know about wines, but surely do not know about customer service, manners, common courtesy. I'm still waiting to hear back from them. It has been weeks!! read more

The art and scenery is amazing here. I came here for a work function and the art display is pretty amazing. When we got to do the wine tasting in their cave, I was impressed by the atmosphere and decor. we went on the artisan tasting tour. luckily, we got free reservations from a source - otherwise, though it was a lovely tour, i wouldn't pay the $40 per person. but, if you're a wine enthusiast and looking for something a little different than what you can normally find on the wine trails, this might be the place. first of all, i love the drive up to this place. it's located on top of a winding hilltop road. we saw deer walking around as we drove up. we were greeted with an excellent glass of sauvignon blanc. the tour guide (who is a chef and works closely with the Halls- we were late so missed the details?) was knowledgeable. couple of times he was trying to be funny though came off snarky. all in all though, he gave a good educated our. the view is amazing. the wine cave is beautiful. the new equipment is impressive for its technology. there was a nice sit down wine tasting under the tree chandelier - beautiful. the art is hit and miss. some great modern pieces and other wannabe looking modern pieces. i couldn't get why the Halls built the main building the way they did - a boring mediterranean inspired building. there's a cheesy metal sculpture of a couple drinking wine next to the building - i guess that fell into the building's aesthetic snooze category. compared to the dynamic two sculptures at the entrance of the wine cave, it makes for a strange paradox of taste. otherwise, very pleasant, very nice visit. read more
