I just got back from my eye exam with Dr. Slusky and it was awesome! His office is immaculate. It's big and bright and well appointed. The staff was very friendly. All the girls were great at making me feel comfortable and answering my questions about the frames. No one was pushy at all about anything. How many times have you been able to say that about a sales team? Dr. Slusky was amazing, too. The exam was a breeze and he gave me some great tips on how to manage my seasonal allergies. He even picked out the perfect frames for me just by looking at me. He was like, "Taylor. The 'Taylor' is the frame for you." Ten minutes later, I'm trying on frames and he was dead on. Halsted Eye Boutique has been pretty wonderful. Dr. J. Slusky has provided me with two years of great exams, feedback, and prescribed medicines that cured my itchy eyes and eye ulcers. The 3 vision techs/office administrators are all absolutely professional and really-really know what they are doing in there; they always provide warm and smiling service, and I just know they are smiling even over the phone. Dr. Slusky is an amazing doctor!! I've had itchy irritated eyes for a while now but doctor after doctor couldn't seem to give me any relief! I booked an appointment on zocdoc with no expectations of solving my irritated eyes but was hopeful to get my contact prescription updated. I agree with the other reviewers in that the doctors at HEB are great. They made me feel very comfortable and seemed very knowledgeable. I thought I was having a great experience. Then came the glasses. I agree that they tack on all of these 'extras' for the glasses, which they don't first discuss with you. When I narrowed down my frames and asked how much they were, it was basically like "in the $200 range". No, you need to tell me how much they are, not a range! I ordered a pair of regular glasses and a pair of prescription sunglasses and was told they should be there in about 5-7 business days. A week later and nothing. Two weeks later and my regular glasses finally come in. I try them on an instantly know it's not the correct prescription. The doctor assures me it is, "re-tests" me and tells me to try them again tomorrow morning. I do this and still clearly know this is not the correct prescription. My sunglasses finally come in a week later, so I go back in and the other doctor re-checks me again. This time, low and behold, it is the incorrect prescription! (I've been wearing glasses almost my entire life, so I think I would know if something was the wrong prescription...this has happened before though, so I don't hold it too much against them, however if I say the glasses feel weird, don't tell me to "let my eyes adjust to them in the morning". Anyway, so much for my glasses being in because they have to send them back to the lab. They said they would "put a rush on them". Well, if a rush is me receiving them another 3 weeks later, then I can't imagine when they would've come in if there wasn't a rush. My glasses took SIX WEEKS to come in!!! That's more than I have ever had to wait, and, as I mentioned, I've been wearing glasses almost my entire life. They did give me 15% off of the glasses, but in my opinion, I deserved more than that! I didn't feel like fighting at that point though. On top of all of this, I had been having some other eye issues, which I was seeing an ophthalmologist for. They tried to say that this doctor, who has 27 years of experience as a cornea specialist, was treating me incorrectly, when they came into the situation at a point where my eyes were basically better. This just put a bad taste in my mouth all together. If you're going in for contacts, I'd say go for it. They fit me really well with new contacts and those came in rather quickly. If you're going in for glasses, I'd say go elsewhere. They informed me that "this never happens", but for me it's enough to never set foot in there again. read more

After my original post, Dr. Slusky contacted me right away to apologize and set up a follow up appointment which I really appreciated. Dr. Slusky has always been professional and the 2nd time I came in, she saw me right away and was extremely attentive and thorough in ensuring we get my prescription right. It took a lot of tries but I think we got it right this time. It's the 2nd day of testing out my new contacts now and can see and read very clearly! Very happy! read more

I've been a patient/customer of Halsted Eye Boutique for the last 4 years or so and I highly recommend this place. Doctor Slusky is very thorough in her examinations. The rest of the staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. There was a new male staff member in training but you couldn't really tell he was a trainee because he was that good when filling my order. They actually take the time to walk over to you and greet you at the door when you walk in. Not many other places give that kind of personalized attention anymore. I have seen other optometrists in Chicago - and none were as diligent with my testing as Dr Joanna Slusky. At my age, 49, my eyes are starting to change a bit for up close and also far away. The last 2 optometrists I saw, could not find the perfect balance of near and far lens to help my vision. Joanna did! YAY!! The procedure itself was so easy and she did a wonderful job of explaining what was happening. She also gave me at home things for me to do to keep improving my eyes. The exam was fine, and my prescription is correct. They asked us to pay for a test our insurance wouldn't cover because it would be useful in the future. My ophthalmologist later informed me that was unnecessary. I was told because of the findings of this test, I would need another test done. I made a follow up appointment when we were picking out some frames. The associate helping us with frames did not go over anything our insurance would cover and we still have not received the breakdown of what was covered and what was not. I am not sure if they just added on a bunch of things that our insurance didn't cover or didn't use the insurance properly. In my opinion it was much more expensive that it should have been. The associate also said two frames were "in the same price range", then when she actually looked at the prices they were more than a hundred dollars in difference. I'm not sure what her salary is, but that is definitely in a different price range in my book. I could have over looked this part because I know it is very common in this industry. My real problem came when I went in for the follow up appointment. The associate had simply said Thursday. So I went in Thursday and was told the appointment was actually next Thursday and because I hadn't gotten it in writing it was completely my fault. I was told to come back for my scheduled appointment as the machine they need isn't working yet. Fine, human error happens. However, the next week, Wednesday night around 6, I get a call that the machine they need for my appointment is still out of order. I was told they would call me to schedule something when they had fixed this. It is months later and I still have not heard from them. My insurance wouldn't cover another trip to an optometrist, so I went directly to an ophthalmologist... to be told I need further testing for GLAUCOMA! I will leave two stars for getting my prescription correct, but any doctor who doesn't follow up on a serious issue like this, is not going to be hearing from me again. read more

Well this visit they had a new machine, a little hand-held thing that shoots a few smaller puffs of air into your eye that was a lot more comfortable than the old machine. I normally don't write reviews but I had to comment how amazing and friendly the staff was here ! I am in town from Houston and forgot my contacts for the next few days and called them and asked if I could get my prescription sent to them to pick up a couple pairs of contact lenses. They were nothing but helpful and kind to me. The staff went out of their way to assist me and at no cost provided me with four days of daily contacts. I even offered to pay and they wouldn't accept my money. This came as a total shock as I am from out of town and they knew I wouldn't be a regular patient in their office. I wanted to like this place a lot, but I don't think I'll be going back. The guy who took my call, Chris, was very friendly and they got me an appointment very quickly. They started my appointment on time (it was midday and I was the only person there), and everyone was friendly and professional. I met with Dr. Joanne Slusky, who I assume is the male Dr. Slusky's wife. The exam was ok - she was professional, but it dragged on and on. She would ask me if something looked better, and every time I gave an answer she'd say "that's what I thought, too", which after an hour made me feel like I was taking some kind of quiz. Also, they didn't tell me that a contact lens fitting wouldn't be covered by my insurance. I have worn contacts for years, and I'm very happy with the brand that I have, but she kept pushing me to try other brands even though there was no medical benefit to them (or comfort, as I did try them). She just kept pushing and pushing, even after I specifically said I wanted my usual brand. That really bothered me. I also ended up ordering new lenses for my glasses, and the lenses ended up being $300+ dollars because of all of the add-ons that I just "had" to get (no frame, just the lenses). The sales agent didn't give me any warning about that, or the prices, which would have been nice. And then when I went to pick them up, I had to wait for a half hour because they broke the frame while adjusting it. Eventually I had to leave and come back a few days later to pick it up. Overall I think the medical portion was fine, but I was just very turned off by how much I felt like I was stuck in a sales pitch. read more

I was overly impressed with the care and service at this boutique. The woman at the front desk was very nice, efficient, and did most of the necessary tests before I even saw the doctor. Once I saw the doctor, she was fantastic. She answered all of my questions, was not condescending and made sure I understood everything she had told me. Finally, I had to pick out a new pair of glasses and the man who helped me was very patient, put up with all of my questions, and even helped me pick out frames based upon my preferences, face shape, and color. Dr. Sluskey is the only eye Dr. I have ever used that takes the time to fit you properly for contacts and explains in full what she is doing and how your eyes work. She's professional, knowledgeable and extremely friendly. Never did anyone try to up sale or pressure me to buy anything extra. Last night I had stepped on my glasses and bent the ear piece out of place. I had bought the glasses in St. Louis and had never been to an eye doctor in Chicago before. I went online and found Halsted Eye Boutique because they are not far from where I live. I called to see if they did eyeglass repair and they said they did. I immediately walked over to their store and was welcomed as soon as I walked in. I asked if they could repair my glasses and at first she wasn't sure since they were pretty bent. She came back and they were back to normal! They didn't even charge me even though I had not been with them before. It was great service and made my day. The doctor is great...ordering glasses was awful. It took 4 weeks longer than they originally told me and there were several add-on's that quickly added up. The contacts took just as long to get in. When asking to get my prescription emailed to me so I could order my contacts online (after I ran out of the original batch), it took days to finally get the prescription. Too many headaches, too many times. I recommend going if you're only going for an exam and not ordering glasses or contacts. read more

The best service that I've ever received during an optometry visit by a long shot. The entire staff is upbeat, the office is colorful and very aesthetically pleasing. Dr. Slusky makes you feel as if you are her only patient while you're there and goes out of the way to not make you feel rushed and encourages you to ask questions. When I made my appointment, I was pretty set on just getting a new contact prescription and going online to get my glasses prescription filled. I informed one of Dr Slusky's staff of that intention, and that staff member didn't try to change my mind about trying to get glasses online, but mentioned a few reasons why she didnt think that that was the way to go. she did this in less than 15 seconds, put no pressure on me to change my mind, and made some very genuine points. After this it was never brought up again. As simple as this exchange was, it put Halsted Eye Boutique in stark contrast with every other Opthamolagist/Optometrist that I had ever visited, as most try to either push you towards buying their glasses, or try to sew doubt in your mind about your decision. Ironically if this had happened to me I would undoubtably just bought my glasses online, but instead I found my self talking to that staff member again 10 minutes later and asking her what what she thought would look good on me. She looked at me for about 10 seconds, asked for my price range, and selected me a pair of glasses which I honestly couldn't refuse. Overall the best way that I could describe my experience at Halsted Eye Boutique is, stress-free. I was never rushed, never pressured, and got all of my questions answered. As a result I purchased both my glasses and contacts here, and will definitely be returning next year. read more
