It's the best of both worlds when you can combine shabu shabu and teppan grill! Halves is located in a plaza at the intersection of Auto Center Drive and Towne Center Drive in Foothill Ranch. There is plenty of parking except during peak hours. Our servers were attentive but also a bit too introverted. Halves offers a decent beverage menu, whether you like your drink leaded or not. Besides sake and wine, they also carry craft beers so of course I had to try one on my recent visit. For dinner, it's a no-brainer to go with their best seller which they coincidentally named the "Halves". Enjoy two tender meat selections of your choice (I opted to boil the American Wagyu and grill the Angus Short Rib), fresh vegetables, and noodles in a savory broth of your choosing while grilling premium ingredients on their smokeless bbq grill. I always appreciate when you can customize what you're eating. I enjoyed the bbq dipping sauce for items off the grill and the sesame dipping sauce for the shabu, but the ponzu sauce was disappointing and too sour. If you enjoy DIY dining, shabu shabu, Yakiniku or both, then you def I recommend paying a visit to Halves!

Loved the AYCE! We just did the shabu shabu boiling pot, but I definitely like the concept of having a grill, too (perhaps next time...)! The service was top notch, and the food was great. The mango shaved ice was unique, and I liked my veggies, sides (edamame, etc) and udon. Btw, kids under 5ft are half off, which wasn't advertised on the menu...so yay!

Experience - 06.23.25 around 7-8:30 pm I'm updating my review based on my experience tonight. I've been going to halves for awhile now and has been our go to for friends & family visiting from out of town. Came tonight with my cousin's last night. It was between Halves or dpot but we decided to go here. When we sat down, my cousin's last night noticed their new limited time AYCE offer! We were both excited UNTIL the waitress asked how tall my toddler was. I looked at her confused and asked why he's under 3? She said he will get the discounted $20 I was curious to hear that when I know my 2 year old would not eat $20 worth!! I agreed to get his height checked thinking the fee would get waived. Walking back to our table I felt the energy of the waitress giving an eye contact to the other waiter making me feel that I was being a difficult customer. The energy for me changed. I felt like we were being watched just to see how much my 2 year old was eating. My appetite was lost, I felt so turned off and confused. We got our receipt and I see the $20 charge. Basically my AYCE meal went from $36 to $56 because of my 2 year old!! I have never been charged at an AYCE shabu shabu or KBBQ spot, nor a buffet at Disneyland because my child is under 3!! I paid $20 for my 2 year old eating a bit of my rice (with us combined, we only ate half of the rice - if that!) their two tiny tofu slices, and some udon noodles! He didn't even eat a whole strip of meat!! Not worth $20 at all!! We could've gone to an AYCE for less than $56 and my 2 year old would've been free! This experience made me leave very disappointed, annoyed & aggravated.

I have been eating here for years. It is my favorite restaurant to go to for A5 Shabu Shabu. The soup flavor and meat is tasty and good. Service: attentive but nothing outstanding. i feel like they are understaffed. Ambiance: bar like decoration. Modern but nothing particularly awesome.

Not a terrible location. Expensive food but portions are small. The service was ok but we came in as the only customers in the restaurant, later it filled up. Novel idea, but the pan was so tiny (half shabu, half bbq.) The worst part is that they had no condiments for the bbq meat they served. You serve japanese wagyu, and when I ask for some salt, this is what he gave me. Is this the kind of salt you expect for $100 portion of meat??? come on man do better.

Didn't think i'd get this kind of restaurant experience in the States, let alone at a smaller restaurant without steep wait times. Don't let that fool you - it blew me away i'll go again every time i'm in the area. (Food - 9.5/10) - While the price may seem unreasonable, the quality backs it without question. 2 orders of the halves menu, beef toro/ american wagyu and the mix meat grill option with savory broths were outstanding with flavor, presentation, quality, everything to ask for. We also gambled with a Beef Carpaccio, which usually in the US loses the coin toss but this one impressed despite being simply plated. (Service- 9/10) - Went on a random Tuesday with only 2 servers on the floor but they absolutely were quick, informative, and on top of everything we needed. (Ambiance- 9/10) - Dimly lit but perfectly spacious small restaurant with great table setups. Really liked the split grill/pot and overall decorative aspects of the eating space.

I really enjoyed Halves the last few times I had it! The portion size is decent for the price, and they have everything you'd want from a shabu restaurant. My only complaint would be that the service is pretty slow because it seems like they're a bit understaffed. Our waiter was running around the whole restaurant serving every table :/ We had also waited a bit over an hour due to our 7 person party size. Overall, the food and broth is great! Shabu restaurants in South OC are few and far between (Halves might be the only one actually lol), so we will keep coming back :)

Amazing service here and an overall great experience when you can't decide on hot pot or bbq you get the best of both worlds here! Their meats were great and when you mix their sauces it's good too. We got to try the following soup broths: Tonkatsu 9/10 recommend Spicy tokatsu 8/10 Mongolian spicy 7/10 They were all decent soups but I liked the tonkatsu the most it was refreshing but still hearty.

Interesting experience with halves pot, with half a hot pot and half grill. We order the broth flavor, meat for pot and meat for grill. The sauces that came with the food were great and the meat quality is good. They also have A5 wagyu as a hot pot option and it is very tender and soft and fatty. Even though the people sitting across the table seems far, we can still talk at a normal volume even with music in the background. The korean music was pleasant. Service was decent. It was a good 1st time experience.

I love the concept of having a split grill and hot pot. I think it's great to have the best of both worlds: bbq and shabu shabu. You do get a good portion of meats and vegetables/noodles. The sauces are customizable and delicious. The times I went were early dinner so it was never packed and the staff was attentive because of it.

Coming from San Francisco I am picky when it comes to Asian food and I am usually unimpressed by Orange County's Asian restaurants. Service was good. Seats were VERY uncomfortable. The bench against the wall is way too far from the table and it can't be moved forward. I was sitting on the ledge and my back was uncomfortable the entire time. The food was OK but it's not my favorite, for me it was quite bland tasting and way overpriced for what it is. I had the ribeye split (grilled and broth pot) and it was $50+. It took forever for my veggies to soften and get grill marks, my friends were done with their food (they only got the broth) by the time my veggies were cooked properly but by then I had to pack my food to go since we were scheduled for another activity.

Best meat in town! This place is a gem with amazing food. Its totally underrated for their quality of food

first time trying halves! i've been meaning to ever since a friend told me about this place! upon ordering, the waiter was extremely friendly and when we got our food, he demonstrated to us how to cook the grilled meat in the best way! the wagyu was AMAZING as was the beef tongue--we were so lucky to have caught the mother's day special (40 to 25 for the wagyu, ?? to 10 for the beef tongue)! we mixed up the meat in our orders so that we could try the shabu and grill versions of the pork butabara and the angus beef! other meats we got to try was the grilled beef toro and the grilled short rib! all the meat was delicious, but i have to say my favorites were definitely the add ons. would come again, definitely. read more

It was our first time here and we had a good experience. Service was excellent and food came out quickly. We ordered one grill and one hot pot, and we prefer the grill at the end. We felt the cut of meat for the grill tasted better and was much more tender. Will be back to try other dishes soon. read more

Had to check this place out because of all the hype. I have to say, it's another great example of differentiating from competition by being creative with food or how the same food is served (5 stars for creativity). The problem is also typical - you pay a premium for mediocre food (3 stars for food). I recommend going once for the fun experience it offers. But if you are a true foodie and just want great food at a great price, this would not be the place I recommend. read more

My family and I ate at Halves Boiling Pot for the first time, it was not a great experience. The service was poor, the staff was not attentive by any means they almost looked bothered when we would ask for a refill on water, or another bowl of rice (which by the way you get charged for each bowl of rice). The food was okay, but the service just made it not as enjoyable. Long story short I wouldn't visit it this restaurant with high expectations. We will not be returning again. read more

Love the concept!! Apparently I'm not the only one because I went on a Sunday and it was very busy! The food is amazing, doing the half Shabu half grill is a must do! This place is so good! We drove 1.5 hours away to celebrate my grandma's birthday here and it was such a great choice! Everyone got to pick either half shabu and half grill or a full shabu/ full grill. The concept is great and I would make the drive again to eat here. The cuts of meat are great, the portions are just the right size, and their spicy tonkatsu broth is delicious! Everyone left here satisfied and with a full stomach. So yum! Can't wait to come back again and try some of their other cuts of meat! read more

Second time here and halves and it didn't disappoint. We ordered the seafood combo, 3 beef combo, and nakaochi karubi. The seafood one had lots of variety, the 3 beef combo had short ribs, beef tongue, and beef angus, all of which were high quality meats. Last but not least is the nakaochi karubi was my absolute favorite it was juicy and a had a good amount of meat. Excellent service and would be back read more

10/10! Their service is always great. The place is small and very busy, but you will always get your food quickly and the severs will have a great attitude. I had the pleasure to be helped by JK and Mauricio. Those two guys were the only two servers working during lunch time and they both did an amazing job. FYI -- no photos because we were busy with a cranky toddler. First, the service was genuinely great. The sweetest lady helped us with the menu and served our food, and we really appreciated her kindness. We were also given complimentary edamame, which was thoughtful, although it was bland, dry, and cold -- almost like it had been sitting in the fridge for a while. Since it was complimentary, we didn't think too much of it. For the mains, we ordered the beef teriyaki and chicken teriyaki bento specials. Unfortunately, both proteins were sliced extremely thin. The chicken especially had a jerky-like texture, and both the chicken and beef lacked flavor. After reading other reviews, they had similar experience. The teriyaki sauce itself was also pretty bland. The tempura was okay, but the tempura dipping sauce tasted watered down and lacked the usual savory depth you'd expect. The one standout was the roll topped with salmon and avocado with spicy tuna inside. It was presented beautifully and tasted fresh and well-balanced. Based on this, I honestly think rolls are what they do best. I really hope they improve the preparation and seasoning of the chicken and beef because it was a major turnoff -- and this is coming from someone who eats pretty much everything. It's hard to justify paying around $22 for a bento when the main protein feels flavorless and insubstantial. With so many good Japanese resto in Lake Forest, I would skip this until the proteins are fixed.

The bamboo shoots dish came with a plethora of vegetables and was mildly to moderately spicy in a good way. My favorites were definitely the beef satay which was cool to perfection and the pad Thai - very well done - and I've been eating at different Thai places since I was a teenager! The noodles were on point with the texture, the flavor was saturated throughout every bite, so yummy! I did not try the pad see ew but it looked really good. Love the quantity given and the high quality of the food. Our meals fed three very hungry JV soccer players and four famished parents. Our waitress/server was very attentive, friendly, and smiling with a welcoming air that made us feel like we were eating at her home. Loved it and we are definitely returning! Thanks Thai Garden!

This place used to be my favorite restaurant until recently. I stopped to try to buy a piece of wagyu to bring home to cook for my uncle that was in hospice care. I explained the situation to the manager and she replied, "no, we do not do takeout orders." I explained this is not a take-out order. I am simply looking for a raw steak I can cook. I also offered a $100 tip just to make it happen. I explained I am only looking for one raw steak to cook at home because eating wagyu was on his bucket list. She again replied, "No!" One of the waiters that was listening in on the conversation tried to convince her and let her know that I had been a customer for a long time and she still would not do it. I have been full-time caretaking for my uncle and have had limited time to find Wagyu. I ended up just going to Kai wagyu in Costa Mesa (45 min drive) so my uncle could mark this off his bucket list. Kai Wagyu helped me out with several A5 Ribeyes (over $400 total). My uncle died a week later and it was a real bummer to have this lady with no compassion not simply sell me a steak which is difficult to find locally. I will probably still end up going back to this restaurant but since they do not like tips or money, I will not leave them a tip. I also recommend anybody going to not tip because they clearly don't want money! read more

Great concept for putting grilling and hot pot in one serving. I felt like having Japanese style hot pot one day and did some research, halves had great review so I decided to give it a try with my friend. Very clean set up, great layout, the bar with liquor and TV set, great atmosphere. We arrived in a weekday afternoon, not so busy, waiter came immediately, extremely knowledgable, very patient, explain all my questions for ordering. I decided on the seafood combo with lobster tail in it. The order came very quickly, very big portion, great representation. Waiter suggested we grill the seafood and hot pot the meat due to freshness reason. Great idea, the soup was great after putting the soups and veggie along with the meat. Super tasty! Seafood is very fresh, they gave you their special butter for grilling, smell very good when grilling. My friend order some extra beef, it was pretty soft, we were stuffed when we are done. We were left very full and super satisfied, at the beginning, I had some doubt about eating this way, but afterwards, feeling like you have so much varieties. Price is not cheap, but very fair for what you get. Highly recommended, will go back again for sure. read more

The best of both worlds truly! If you're ever indecisive on whether you want hot pot or kbbq look no further!! There is also the option to just do the hot pot or the grill if you only wanted to one and not both. The service was great and the quality of the meats were nice. However, where they don't do so well for me is in their broth. I was able to try the miso, spicy tonkotsu, and Chinese spicy broths because that's what everyone else in my grouped ordered. The broths were honestly average, the flavors in all of them were nothing to be impressed about which was disappointing. Additionally, the spicy tonkotsu was barely spicy (and I'm not the type to like things overly spicy) the Chinese spicy was just a little more spicy but it just had a subtle kick to it, nothing too crazy I asked for more chilli oil to add but it didn't help much. Definitely recommend trying it, because the experience of doing both hotpot and kbbq is so fun, but I'm not sure if I would crave/come again. Also might be difficult for party's of 6 or greater. Very unsure how they would seat a table of 5 with their layout read more

Delicious concept for those people like me who are always on the fence about "grilled food" or "shabu shabu." This place has both and definitely has the flavor to back up either decision you make. I ordered the half-half setting with the spicy chinese soup as my broth base. I ordered the standard beef plate and it came with a pretty decent size of vegetables. I wish there were more vegetables, but the vegetables platter also came with soba noodles and shiritaki noodles (really translucent and thin). Really great soup broth, but I could have gone a touch more spicy. The grill was hot and service was fast. Would come back again, but not frequently as it is on the pricier side. Overall, a nice meal to splurge a little, especially if you can't make up your mind with food choices! read more

However, upon arriving at 8:21 PM, I was informed that last call was at 8:20 PM, a detail not mentioned online. The lack of transparency about the early last call led to a wasted 20-minute drive and gas. It would be helpful if such crucial information was available online. The food is so amazing and the half grill half hot pot is a brilliant idea. The sauces are delicious while not being overly sweet. The meats are all excellent cuts. There isn't much of a difference between the mid range meats IMO so snag the cheaper ones to save some $$. The only reason it's not a 5 star review is because they are often packed and understaffed so it may take a while to get a table depending on when you visit. read more

Came during their first day of opening and they are giving away 20% off which is super nice. Their price is reasonable for the meat quality they give you, I tried their 1855 angus cut beef and it was pretty good, my friend tried their half pot with prime short rib grill and she really enjoyed it. Although this place is kind of out of the way but it is definitely worth making the trip to come try this place out. read more

During COVID they've done really well and although I can tell they're a bit understaffed (obviously because of COVID) our service was so great!
